Editorial Review

Poor Miss Clavel! In "an old house in Paris that was covered withvines," Miss Clavel oversees the education of 12 little girls, the littlest of whom isthe mischievous Madeline. Despite her size, she fearlessly pooh-poohs the tiger in thezoo and frightens Miss Clavel with her adventurous antics. When she awakens the entirehouse with her plaintive cries in the middle of the night, Doctor Cohn whisks theappendicitis-stricken Madeline off to the hospital where, some two hours later, sheawakens to find a scar on her stomach! The scar (not to mention the flowers, toys, andcandy given to Madeline by her father) proves quite interesting to the rest of MissClavel's charges when they make a special trip to visit her. Ludwig Bemelmans's liltingrhymes are music to children's ears, and the quirky, oddly perfect drawings of the girls in"two straight lines" lend an enticing Parisian flavor to this perennialchildren's favorite. 5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
I am not a fan of France, nor of Madeline, but this book was given as a gift and I have to say my daughter begs for it and I enjoy it more than I thought. In fact, I am even going to purchase more Madeline books. My only quibble is that the rhyming is often a bit off but to be honest, I think that makes the book more enjoyable and more reflective of the time in which it was actually written. It is a classic after all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ludwig Bemelmans introduces little Madeline to the world
I have had several occasions to read "Madeline" over the years, yet had never read anything about her.So learning that she had celebrated her 60th birthday was something of a surprise because I did not think of this first story of that irrepressible little girl as something that was first published on the eve of World War II.But the bigger surprise was learning that "Madeline" was not originally written and published in France, which I had always assumed was the case. That means all of those times I was reading this book and wondering what it would read like in the orignal French, I was completely off the mark.Live and learn.
5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone Loves Madeline
Madeline is the story of a fearless little girl lucky enough to grow up in Paris, France. She lives with 11 other girls in "an old house...covered in vines", and she has a wonderful time scaring her care-giver, Miss Clavel. In the middle of the night, Madeline is rushed out of the old house and to a hospital, frightening her housemates but she somehow manages to make them jealous of her stay there. The book is easy to follow and the pictures are clear - they're all VERY yellow, but are detailed and help tell the story. A classic everyone should read at least once.I would think anyone between kindergarten and maybe fourth grade would enjoy the story, with the two older grades able to read it themselves in addition to having it read to them. ... I have listened to this recording of The Nutcracker since I was about 4 or 5.It has lulled me to sleep, it has gotten me excited for Christmas, and has cemented my love affair with Tchaikovsky's music.Claire Bloom's wondrous and velvety voice does an interesting rendition of The Nutcracker, with some extra bits that aren't in the Ballet, but make everything moretitillating. It's set to the Main Bits of the Nutcracker Suite, and....ILOVE IT!You should love it too. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What magic lies between the covers of this book!
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading these wonderful stories again, and it was a bonus having all of Rudyard Kipling's stories together in one volume. This book has all the Mowgli stories, plus other favourites like "Riki-Tiki-Tav", "Toomai of the Elephants", and many more.Reading these again affirmed my belief of Kipling's great skill as a storyteller. These stories had appeal for me when I was younger, but they have a different appeal for me now.Kipling's descriptions and characterizations are wonderful, and they put the reader right there in the jungle with Mowgli and Bagheera, and all Mowgli's other friends. We who love to read should not forget to read these wonderful stories once in awhile.Modern short story authors still have to go some to even begin to match these classics by a great author.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wow Book
The Jungle Book is a story about a young boy whose life is paid for with a bull brought down by Bagera, a black panther.Mowgali lived his life in the pack until a tiger (Sher Khan) convinced the pack to hate Mowgali because he is a man cub and is a potential threat to them in the future. So Mowgali makes his life among men in the village and then is threatened once again by Sher Khan and after Mowali destroyed Sher Khan he took the pelt to the pack and told them off.I really liked this book but it used old English that was hard to get the hang of at first.

3-0 out of 5 stars The story continues...
The 'Subtle Knife' is the second book in Pullman's His Dark MAterial trilogy. The story of Lyra continues in the book, picking up where 'The Golden Compass' leaves off. To begin, this book would be hard to follow if the reader has not read the preceding volume. There are characters and story lines in 'The Subtle Knife' that began in 'The Golden Compass'. I believe this book would be a bit confusing and the reader would not enjoy it as much without the preceding book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Lyra, new adventures, another mission and more friends...
"The subtle knife" is the second book in Phillip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" triology. The first book in the series is "The golden compass". If you haven't read it, don't continue reading this review because it has some spoilers. In case you have read "The golden compass", and are understandably eager to know how the story continues, I will give you some hints.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Sequel
Few sequels live up to the predecessor, but THE SUBTLE KNIFE does exactly that. In this volume, Pullman dives deeper into the themes, settings and characters presented in THE GOLDEN COMPASS. As in the first installment, the setting is well realized and the emotions are deftly rendered. As inall of Pullman's works, the characters are vibrant and engaging, and will leave an inprint on readers memories. I can only hope the third book will be as good as the first two.

Editorial Review

Miyax, like many adolescents, is torn. But unlike most, her choices may determine whether she lives or dies. At 13, an orphan, and unhappily married, Miyax runs away from her husband's parents' home, hoping to reach San Francisco and her pen pal. But she becomes lost in the vast Alaskan tundra, with no food, no shelter, and no idea which is the way to safety. Now, more than ever, she must look hard at who she really is. Is she Miyax, Eskimo girl of the old ways? Or is she Julie (her "gussak"-white people-name), the modernized teenager who must mock the traditional customs? And when a pack of wolves begins to accept her into their community, Miyax must learn to think like a wolf as well. If she trusts her Eskimo instincts, will she stand a chance of surviving? John Schoenherr's line drawings suggest rather than tell about the compelling experiences of a girl searching for answers in a bleak landscape that at first glance would seem to hold nothing. Fans of Jean Craighead George's stunning, Newberry Medal-winning coming-of-age story won't want to miss Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Julie of the wolves
When I read the first part of the book i thought it would just be boring. When I got to the first part of the middle I started to read it I just started to fell in love with it. By the time I was done reading it, it felt like i wanted to read it 100 more times. Some of the parts in the book were very sad like when Jello died.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
I remember reading this book in third grade and loving it, but I couldn't remember any of it, only the basic stuff. I didn't even remember the ending! Well, three years later I picked it up again, and it really "wowed" me. I could read better now then I could in third grade, and I appreciated the book more. It is one of my favorite books now. It is beautifully written and focuses on friendship and survival. This book is also very touching and also very sad. I have not yet read the sequel or the third book, but I highly reccomend Julie of the Wolves to animal lovers or people who just love a great book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Julie of the Wolves
I really enjoyed the first two parts of this book, but toward the third I did not, as it was focused on racial hatred. The first two sections were mainly about her survival in the arctic tundra, and her eventual acceptance by a wolf pack.

Editorial Review

No education is complete without a large slice of Greek mythology. And there's no better way of meeting that literary quota than with the D'Aulaires' book. All the great gods and goddesses of ancient Greece are depicted in this big, beautiful classic, lovingly illustrated and skillfully told. Young readers will be dazzled by mighty Zeus, lord of the universe; stirred by elegant Athena, goddess of wisdom; intimidated by powerful Hera, queen of Olympus; and chilled by moody Poseidon, ruler of the sea. These often impetuous immortals flounce and frolic, get indiscreet, and get even. From petty squabbles to heroic deeds, their actions cover the range of godly--and mortal--personalities.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars the carnivorus carnival
"Rraww," growled the prowling lions in this book, The Carnivorous Carnival. When this book begins, Violet, Sunny and Klaus are trapped in Count Olaf's car trunk as they go to Madam Lulu's carnival. At the carnival, it is weird. The Baudelaires worked at the House of Freaks, where people make fun of them. Also there were deadly lions there too, which ate people, a dangerous roller coaster, andMadam Lulu's strange crystal ball. Eventually Count Olaf decide to put the House of Freaks in the lion's den.The other freaks must fight the Baudelaires. None of the freaks falls into the lion's den.The Baudelaires barely escape, but with Count Olaf. I'd recommend this book because it is suspenseful, humorous and has interesting characters.
5-0 out of 5 stars freaks and fear and the breaking of formula
Here is the ninth volume in Lemony Snicket's bestselling children's collection A Series of Unfortunate Events. The Baudelaire orphans had hidden in the trunk of Count Olaf's car at the end of The Hostile Hospital to escape from a fire that Olaf and his "associates" had set. With The Carnivorous Carnival They arrive at the Caligari Carnival out in the middle of the hinterlands and are able to get out of the trunk before Count Olaf discovers them. Klaus, Violet, and Sunny disguise themselves as Carnival Freaks so that they can stay at the Carnival and have the opportunity to discover some facts about the possibility of one of their parents still living and the rest of the "Snicket File". Klaus and Violet are disguised as a Two-Headed Freak Beverly / Eliot, Sunny is Chabo the Wolf Baby. They join with other freaks, like Kevin the Ambidextrous Man, Colette the Contortionist, and Hugo the Hunchback.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Snicket's Best
In the ninth installment of the Series of Unfortunate Events, The Carnivorous Carnival, Mr. Snicket leaves behind the basic kids get a new guardian, Count Olaf tries to get them once again outline of the first eight books. This is the first book in the series where the Baudelaires are guardianless. Instead, they find themselves stuck in a sinister plot involving Count Olaf and his troupe, an enigmatic fortune teller, and one damn creepy carnival. This book is quite well-written, and Tim Curry perfectly depicts the sinister quality on the book-on-tape version.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is book five in the wonderful Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. The book witnesses the return of Lucy and Edmond, a few of the ancient kings and queens of Narnia, along with a surprise new character! Editorial Review

Leon Zeisel is in big trouble. He is perpetually exhausted due to anoveractive icemaker in the hotel where he lives, he discovers in hismother's desk a confidential envelope from his school announcing that hedisplays "a troubling lack of fine motor skills," and worst of all, hebegins fourth grade under the tyrannical tutelage of Miss Hagmeyer, ablack-cloaked, black-wigged, mushroom-eared woman who is obsessed withsewing, a fine motor skill if there ever was one. Insisting that allinstruction should stem from the Middle Ages and "The Heavenly Stitchesof Virtue," the Hag forces her students to sew an "animile" per month,a stuffed animal of sorts that is not to exceed four s.p.i. (stitchesper inch) in the inseam. What happens when Leon decides to sew hisend-of-year "Master Piece," the "spitting image" of Miss Hagmeyer, anexact miniature replica down to her liver-colored panty hose? AllenKurzweil creates a magical, eccentric world where, as in many of themost satisfying children's books, adults are benevolent but flawed--andkids are in delicious control of them. 5-0 out of 5 stars exellent
If you like mysteries, spookiness, and maybe even sewing. I recomend this book, because it is funny and full of adventure.Allen Kurzwell put a lot of detail into this book,I didn't dislike anything in this great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Deliciously Quirky Book for Kids!
Fourth grader Leon lives with his mother in their eccentric apartment house in New York City. Leon is nervous about going into the fourth grade, and is horrified to find out his teacher is the dreaded Mrs.Hagmire. She is well known for her obsession with sewing which is especially bad for Leon because of his poor fine motor skills. She forces her students to create "animles" (in other words models of animals) sewn from her old panty hose.A bizarre accident involving a jar of spit gives Leon's animle strange powers. This is a fast paced funny book that will appeal to those who enjoy humorous fantasy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excitement, magic, and mystery
I think that Leon and the Spitting Image is a great book that a lot of readers would love to read. It's about Leon Ziezel and his two friends, Lilly-Matise and P.W., and how they try to survive fourth grade and avoid being caught by Miss Hagmeyer (or "The Hag") their teacher who is obsessed with sewing and medieval things, and Henry Lumkin (or "Hank the Tank") the school bully. But with a little bit of spit, everything could change.I recommend this book for anyone who likes excitement, magic, and mystery kind of things.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inkspell.....
This book was on my bookshelf in a less than a week after I read Inkheart.I really enjoyed it and could not put it down. Cornelia Funke used very good detail and surprised me very much as well.I never would have suspected some of the things that happened but I must admit that I expected some things that did not happen.I cannot say that one book was better than the other but I can say that it is a must read for all ages!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for kids
Cornelia Funke follows up her fantastic adventure, Inkheart, with a more in depth and more mature sequel.Younger kids can still appreciate the excitement and the magic, but a young adult or even adult reader can find enjoyment between the pages. The character development delves even deeper in this book.Inkheart explored what would happen if you could make your favorite characters real.Inkspell asks: What do you do after ten years away? Can you ever go back to an old life? And finally: can you choose who you love?
5-0 out of 5 stars What I think about Inkspell
I like Inkspell and Inkheart very much and I am hoping for the next book. My dad and I are thinking that it will probably start out with the word Ink (although he has not read it yet).

Can crude Teri and sweetMikey, combined with the rejection letter, form the catalyst that will shakeKate out of her selfish tunnel vision and force her to deal with the suppressedpain of her mom's death? 3-0 out of 5 stars nicole's book!!
This book was about a girl named Kate Malone. I liked the book because it was not predictable. The book was about this girl named Teri who is like a bully, but she is only a bully because she is getting picked on by other kids. Then her house burns down by a fire, so she moves in with Kate and her family and they are planning on to rebuild and remodel their house. But one day when they are eating lunch, they let Mikey go up and play in his new house. They thought that the door to his room was locked, but it seemed that it wasn't. So when they heard a loud scream coming from Mikey's room they were all wondering what happened. When they got up there they saw little Mikey lying on the floor dead. The open outlet electrocuted him and he died. It was so sad.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars for Catalyst!
The book {Catalyst was such an awesome book. The characters: Kate, Terri, Mikey, and Mitch were my favorites especially Mikey. Towards the end of the book is the best part of the whole thing. You don't want to put it down. It reminds me of my brother's life. He is a lot like Kate in so many ways. This book is about a typical teenagers life; the pressure of school, the pressure of friends, waiting for your college acceptance letter (hopefully), and just life at home. I would highly recommend this book to anyone especially those between 12-19. This book is in my top two. It's basically about an average 18-year-old girl named Kate whose mother died and her father is the town pastor, she has a 14-year-old brother and a boyfriend named Mitch. She's waiting for her acceptance letter to MIT, the school her mother went to, and a tragedy befalls the neighbors, which leads Kate from her normal happy life to a rude awakening.

3-0 out of 5 stars Catalyst...was good but could have been better!
Kate Malone is a straight A student whose dream is to get into MIT, which so happens to be her dead mother's alum school.Kate loves chemistry, and her boyfriend has already been accepted early decision to Harvard, so she is feeling the pressure to get in!One catch: she ONLY applied to MIT because she was so confident that she and her love of chemistry would get her in. However, her perfect world unravels beginning with a fire that destroys her neighbor's house. Her neighbor happens to be Teri Litch, a bully who Kate has always hated.Because Kate's father is a caring reverend, he lets Teri and her "brother" Mikey stay at their own house.

4-0 out of 5 stars Despereaux is a fun book.
I would recommend this book, The Tale of Despereaux, by Kate DiCamillo for animal lovers and lovers of fantasy. Despereaux, a mouse, is born in the medieval times.A rat named Roscuro captures the princess and the brave mouse Despereaux goes to save her. The book is about bravery no matter how small you are.
4-0 out of 5 stars A book review of "The Tale of Despereaux" by Chris C.
The main characters in this book are a mouse named Despereaux, the Thread Master, Princess Pea, King Phillip, Miggery Sow and a rat named Roscuro. The story mainly takes place in King Phillip's castle and the dungeon. The story begins when Despereaux Tilling is born.He was born in the light. He was born with his eyes open and he had big ears. All of the mice were very suspicious of him since he was born with his eyes open.He was the smallest mouse to be seen by the other mice in all of the castle.Only his family was nice to him.
