Not for kids
I first read HCA when I was about 8 and I remember being baffled at their deviation from the standard "fairy tale" formula. They stayed withme however.

Childhood Storytime Staple
I had a version of this book when I was a kid and was super excited to be able to share these tales with my own children.There aren't a lot of illustrations for the kids to look at, which I love because it forces my kids to use their imaginations.So this is a book that is best for before bed time reading and is sure to inspire wonderful Dreams!There are very few short stories in this collection.Most of them are very long and the kids will go to sleep before you reach the end.But if you're familiar with the enchanting tale weaving of Andersen, you know as a parent, you will want to finish the stories to satisfy your own curiosities.A must have for any household with Kids.Pages are thin and if you cry on any page is goes through multiple stories...but that definitely adds character to our book!Enjoy! ... a bit disappointed
I have loved everything I have read by Atwater-Rhodes in the past, which is just about everything she has ever written.Unfortunately, I found this book a bit wanting.She did have a great twist on the story, and I am not talking about the romance part, that was pretty obvious.More along the line of the magic.What didn't do it for me was the herione.I found her lacking.She just didn't seem worthy of all that worship, friendship, and love she received from every living soul she encounter.Atwater-Rhodes gave no reason for this blind faith in this character.Just what made her so special?

I have read all of Amelia's books - Snakecharm, then Hawksong being my favorites. Falcondance dissapointed me only because I got one little taste of the characters I was REALLY interested in - Sive, Salem, and especially Oliza - before I was whisked off to Ahnmik with Nicias, whose character I found less interesting than the others.

Crispin: The Cross of Lead
I read this book first in sixth grade, and now I read it again and I loved it more now than I did then. Crispin goes from being a thirteen year old boy growing up in historical England with no name, to being Crispin who can play the recorder, knows who he is, and has made a friend. This was great, and I got many good quotes from it. It has a lesson to be learned, and it is exciting and smart. Love it.

I can see why this book won the Newbery
Crispin: The Cross of Lead is a historical novel set in 1377, during a time of great crisis in England. At the start of the story, the hero doesn't even know his own name. He's been raised in isolation in a small village, and has only ever heard himself referred to as "Asta's son". Even among the villagers, Asta's son has been isolated, never treated like one who belonged there. His own mother often seems to resent him. He thinks of himself as being "nothing".

No nuances, everything is over the top.
This book can't find it's niche. Even though it is commonly classified as a "teen" bood, the language in the book is as bad as "Scarface" or "Pulp Fiction", with the "f-bomb" being as common an expression for these teens as "awesome" was for teens in the 80's or "cool" in the 70's. This could be excused if the characters were interesting, but the characters on sit-coms are more interesting than the supporting characters. The supporting characters throughout the entire book are wooden props for the author to make social commentary, and after a while it feels like one is being beat over the head by it.
After reading "Feed" I feel full.
Titus lives in a future time when a technology called "the feed" attaches right into your brain and gives him the ability to send email, chat, watch TV, order merchandise, and listen to the radio all at once.Everyone gets "the feed" installed when they're babies, and it helps them to know what's cool and where to shop for their favorite things.

Jolly Postman Book
This was my favorite childhood book! It was just as fun reading it now as it was then, and I don't even have kids! Every child should have this book.

A Classical Treasure

A lovely book on counting and factorials
This picture book is easy to read, and presents two math concepts:the first is counting to ten.The second is factorials:If there are three kingdoms in two countries on one island, then how many kingdoms are there altogether?
Terrific Teaching Tool
I read this book to a first grader and a fifth grader. The first grader immediately observed that with the turn of each page, there was one more picture, i.e., mountains, kingdoms and villages, etc., ending up with 10 jars. The next concept of factorials was not as obvious, but he was curious about the multiplying dots. To the fifth grader, the concept of factorials was much more apparent and he found the pattern easily. This book helps with multiplying skills as well as the mathematical concept of factorials. Wonderful book!Just needs MORE content!
This book was a gift for my 4 year old. It seems to be a re-written edition which is fine, as it is easier to understand than other versions we have. The illustrations are wonderful and my daughter loves them. However I was a bit disappointed that they could not fill this book with more fables. It seems like sort of a thin book for the price, and some of the most popular fables were omitted from this version.Just an FYI, since Amazon seems to be mixing reviews on here among various versions of books... this review is for ISBN# 0-7624-0413-2. I bought this and other books based on reviews that were not relevent to the particular version of the book I purchased.
a great book, but not for my classroom
While I appreciate this book for its beautiful, large illustrations, I wish I had browsed the table of contents before purchasing it. I had intended to use this book with my first grade class because we are studying Aesop's Fables. However, since two of the fables in this book contain the word "ass," this book is not appropriate for my classroom. I have no problem using it with my own children, however, so I'm not sorry that I bought it!

Beautiful, but not what I expected
It is true - the drawings in this book are beautiful.However, I was hoping that the telling of the fables would have more of the original flavor.The stories have been updated to at least the 20th century.I am sure that when Aesop told the stories, the Country Mouse and the City Mouse didn't have to dodge automobiles and miss stepping in bubblegum.It was misleading that Aesop is listed as "editor" because the stories are not as he told them.Read more

Straightforward, engaging introduction to the 5 senses
My 5 year old son absolutely adores this book.He asks me to read it repeatedly, and has fun pointing out when he's using his senses just like the (adorably illustrated) child in Aliki's book does.It's a lively, fun introduction to an important scientific concept.

Not to be confused with Aliki's "My Five Senses"
Margaret Miller's book is a simple introduction to the five senses which young children can easily understand and relate to. I use it in teaching the concept of the five sensesto my English as a Second Language kindergarten students. Miller presents each sense with the related body parts, which makes it easier for children to understand the sometimes complicated idea of what a "sense" is.For example, "With my eyes, I see..." and then she gives examples.The book is illustrated with Miller's photos of children of different ethnicities, and the items they are seeing, smelling, etc are relevant to most children's experience.My students used this book as a starting point to make their own books about the five senses.As a teacher, I recommend this book to anyone looking for a way to introduce some science content to little ones.

My Five Senses
Appealing pictures accompany a straight forward text. "Sometimes I use all my senses at once...When I laugh and play with my puppy, I use four senses. I see, hear, smell and touch...each sense is very important to me because it makes me aware.To be aware is to see all there is to see...hear all there is to hear...[etc]." It's not so good as my imagine
The words are so crowded. So I won't suggest this one.

Interesting
I love to read and have begun reading many classics.My teacher recommended "Little Women" for me to read.So, I went off and bought it at the bookstore.In this edition you read an introductin first which I thought was a bit boring and long.It tells about the back round of the author and how this book was made.This story is broken up into two parts.The story starts out with four girls- Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy.Their father is away at war.The first part of the story was too drawn out I thought.There is a description for everything.I did however enjoy reading it.The second part had a lot of action.There are weddings and births, and sadly even a death.It was more paced then the first part.I think Jo had the best character.She was so realistic.All in all, I thought this story was pretty good and I am not disappointed in it.I am very happy I read it.I know it is a classic and I do understand why.

Penguin Classics
This book was a wonderful read and highly touching. But everyone already knows that. I wanted to comment on a certain edition printed by Penguin classics. Not only does it have a beautiful cover illustration of the four sisters, it has end notes in the back for an even more clear writing. And the best part is that both parts are in the book, and it is printed exactly like its first publication. There are no altercations and no editing: the book is printed exactly as Alcott wanted it to be. I highly recommend the Penguin Classics edition. ... Read more

I did not enjoy this book because it seems like Avi doesn't put thought into what he writes.another thing is that it doesn't hav actuall chapters so its hard to keed track of where you are reading.

An Inspiring Story
Snowflake Bentley tells the delightful story of Wilson Bentley, a man who spent his entire life photographing snowflakes. He lived in Vermont his whole life, a place where snow is as common as dirt, but yet, he was still able to see its marvelous beauty. Children will love reading this book about a topic everyone finds pleasure in, plus they will be inspired by the life of Snowflake Bentley.
Bill Bentley and his somewhat odd profession
This book elegantly portrays the life of a rather eccentric man who spent his entire life studying and photographing snowflakes.The artwork is very complementary to his life's story, which is purposefully written with children in mind as the readers. There is enough information available about his life that an entire unit of study can be developed around the themes of winter and snow.Cross-curricular activities can be expanded to other content areas such as Social Studies and Science.I am a teacher and I use this book in conjunction with William Bentley's book of his actual snowflake photos entitled "Snow Crystals".The students learn a lot about snow and about the man.

What a unique and wonderful story
I love finding a children's book with a true story. Kids are bombarded with fiction and silliness all day long (which is wonderful in its own right), but it's such a treat to share a true story with children. It's OK
I bought this book based on the reviews on this website having never seen it first hand.While I think it is a cute story, my 18 month old book lover didn't take to it.It's the last of his picks during reading hour.

Essential Book for Small Children (and their parents!)
Jez Alborough created a modern classic with Hug, the story of a little chimpanzee named Bobo and his quest for a hug. The book uses just three words (hug, Bobo, and Mommy), and this minimalist approach serves to highlight Alborough's rich artwork. The jungle and the animals Bobo encounters are rich and vibrant, and Bobo's facial expressions tell the story better than words ever could.
Encourages creativity/imagination
Because this is truly a picture book with very few words (hug, bobo, mommy), it encourages creativity/storytelling skills in toddlers and young children.The story progresses nicely with the little monkey encountering different mother/baby animals while looking for his own mother to hug.(This is MY interpretation!)My two-year-old daughter, on the other hand, can tell numerous stories while "reading" this book herself!I find great joy and take great pride in listening to her tell me the story of the monkey in the rainforest...or the monkey in the woods...or the monkey in the trees...whatever she decides it will be each time!I highly recommend this book if you want to encourage your child to use his/her imagination! ... Poppy by Avi

Another Adventure
This is a book about a tiny deer mouse, named Poppy, who ruins everything for her family (or at least they think so.) When her boyfriend and her go onto a great horned owl's property without permission, the owl eats her boyfriend and Poppy manages to escape. Then her family decides to move because they have grown too big, but where they would like to move is past the great horned owl's property. When the mice go to ask permission from the owl, so that they can cross his property, he denies it because Poppy and her boyfriend didn't ask permssion the night before. Is that the truth, or is he hiding something that the mice shouldn't know about, Poppy wonders. So Poppy sets out on another adventure to figure out what the owl is hiding from them, and discovers some secrets about the owl.

my review
I completely love Amelia Atwater-Rhodes writing. I can read her books over and over because I'm so drawn into the imaginative world. The contueing story of the world of shapeshifters keeps me asking for what going to happen next. In her writing we get to enter a world unlike our own but yet in some ways like it. It's hard to finish one book and have to wait for the next to find out what happens next but it's worth the wait.

Third in the Series
Falcondance is the third book in The Kiesha'ra Series. Amelia Atwater-Rhodes is the child prodigy who wrote In the Forests of the Night at the age of thirteen.
Awesome Book!
This was a very good book, too! In this book, some loose ends from the first two are tied up, and it explains quite a bit. I really enjoyed the suprise at the end. I would definately recommend this book, but with fair warning to read the first two before reading this one. ... Read more

Kids love it
Kids love books that don't always appeal to adults.This is one of those books.

redundant but fun
I like most of his books but if you have one you have them all.It is also important to follow the age guidelines on these books.Younger children don't get the "joke".

For 5 and Up
This book is hilarious! Ted Arnold is a brilliant storyteller-both with words and images. I bought this book for my 2 year old nephew and highly recommend you DON'T read it to a child that age. It freaked him out. I have, however, observed older children reading this book with pleasure. Follow the age recommendation given with the book and the reader will enjoy learning about the body and the humor shared with the protagonist.

A Fantastic Book!
My name is Lizbeth.I am a third grader in Salton City, CA.This book is about a little girl that was walking and then heard noises.She paid attention to the noises.I felt fantastic about this book.I learned that when you're walking, you can hear noises. I loved the part when the little girl splashed water.She is a great girl.I hope you buy it!

This is a great children's book of identifying sounds..
I have enjoyed reading this book to young children as they join along in reading by making the sounds of the items outside that the little girl hears when she goes on a walk with her dad and dog.The way some of thewords are printed on the pages add to the overall enjoyment of reading.

PRESCHOOLERS WILL LOVE IT!

Young readers love it
This was purchased as a gift for a young reader. It is important that a new reader develope a love for reading at a young age and what better way than to read stories developed especially for that age group.

Quite funny to very young kids
Gregory, a young goat, likes junk food - all the stuff his parents don't want him to eat.They try everything, taking him to the doctor and even letting him stuff himself with junk food and getting a belly-ache from it.How can they get Gregory to stop eating carrots and eggs and salad and start eating proper, healthy food - like shirts and shoes and tires??

Very cute book about poor Gregory who only likes healthy people foods!My daughter enjoys the story and pointing out the different items that the goats eat like TV sets and ties!

All Time Favorite
Grandparents - Here is the perfect gift - a funny beautifully illustrated book about a goat, his strange eating habits, and his worried parents. I have read this treasure over and over to my grandson, begining at age three.I laugh just thinking about Gregory the goat!I marvel at the imagination of the author who wrote it.
