    Editorial Review

The 26 characters in this rhythmic, rhyming baby book are a lowercase alphabet with attitude. "A told b, and b told c, 'I'll meet you at the top of the coconut tree'"--which probably seemed like a good idea until the other 23 members of the gang decided to follow suit. Lois Ehlert's chunky block illustrations show the luxuriant green palm standing straight and tall on the first page, but it begins to groan and bend under its alphabetical burden. First the coconuts fall off, then ("Chicka chicka...BOOM! BOOM!") all the letters also end up in a big heap underneath. A very simple board-book version stops there, but this original text goes on to introduce the helping hands of the 26 uppercase "mamas and papas and uncles and aunts." (Baby to preschool) Read more

I read this to my preschoolers almost everyday. They call it the Coconut Book. They're learning the alphabet, identifying letters, andbuilding their vocabulary.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book
I first read this to my son when he was one and a half months old.He smiled and (almost) laughed, he liked it so much.Amazing that a book can do that to a child at that age.He still loves it, and you'll be amazed how quickly you learn to recite it by memory. It comes in handy all the time -- waiting in the doctor's office, riding in the car, anytime he starts to fuss. And it doesn't matter if I don't even have the book around -- I just say it and the words capture his attention.Excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creative look at Autumn
This is a WONDERFUL book! We read it to our class of 3-year-old preschoolers, and they were absolutely captivated. They were so quiet and engaged that they forgot to ask when we were leaving to go on our field trip.
5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK TO ACTUALLY GO OVER WITH YOUR KIDS TOGETHER
This is one of those books that is absolutely made for the parent or teacher to read with the child, talk and listen. Each photograph is an absolute work of art.Not only do you get to expose the child to some wonderful art work, but also this book is an ideal set up for a nature study. It actually gives the adult, who hopefully has done their own homework, to interact with the child and add thier (adult and child) own thoughts. The story is not much, but this is one of those works where the story, if more detailed, would just get in the way.I liked the concept of this work. This is a good one to work with the child in the fall. After reading and discussing the book, a walk in the woods, yard, park or what ever, can bring out quite a lot of insight from the child...they can relate.Recommend this one highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars An unforgettable book!
Poor little birdie came into this world and his mother was out getting him his first meal. He goes through a series of, "Are you my mother?" to planes, cows, dogs, until he almost gives up. As this book unravels, you cheer on the birdie while he goes through his wonders of who he feels a sense of belonging to. P.D.Eastman uses repitition and adds easy drawings to perfect a child's love and want to hear this book OVER AND OVER again. One of the first books I learned to read by and still own the same raggedy copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Are you my favorite book?
Our Grand daughter acts out this entire book with dramatic embellishments and subtle interpretation. It is the most interactive book a youngster from 6 months on can love and enjoy forever.

1-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book as a child...but it's really inappropriate now!
First, let me say that I learned to read from this book. When I was a kid I knew all the words and I loved it! But then again, I didn't know any better, and frankly, neither did my mom and dad. I was lucky in that the book applied to me: I looked like my mom and dad and therefore the message of the book, that your mother is the one who looks most like you, was seemingly harmless.

    Editorial Review

Wanda Petronski lives way up in shabby Boggins Heights, and she doesn't have any friends. Every day she wears a faded blue dress, which wouldn't be too much of a problem if she didn't tell her schoolmates that she had a hundred dresses at home--all silk, all colors, and velvet, too. This lie--albeit understandable in light of her dress-obsessed circle--precipitates peals of laughter from her peers, and she never hears the end of it. One day, after Wanda has been absent from school for a few days, the teacher receives a note from Wanda's father, a Polish immigrant: "Dear teacher: My Wanda will not come to your school any more. Jake also. Now we move away to big city. No more holler Polack. No more ask why funny name. Plenty of funny names in the big city. Yours truly, Jan Petronski." Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good read for any young girl
I read this when I was really young and it had a serious impact on my life and the way I treated others. This is a short book meant for kids who are under 12 years old but it's equally powerful even for adults and carries a strong message. I have met a lot of catty, shallow women and girls in my life (no names here) who should read this book. It has a very good lesson about kindness, not judging others and standing up for what is right. It's a sad story with a bittersweet ending. Though I wished the ending had more closure, the message is still strong and I would not change the story. I think kids will learn a great deal from this story, things like: Don't judge others on how they look or what they have. Be kind to people because you never know when they will be gone. Don't say anything to anyone that you may regret later. Above all, never underestemate people's talent or brains. This story is old but timeless!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE HUNDRED DRESSES: What is it about?
First off, I want to start with saying that this book is not about lying but the hazards of peer pressure and teasing. Wanda Pertoniski was different and because of this she suffered the indignities of being teased and ostracized from any real normal life. She was an easy target for the more popular and socially acceptable girls of her school. Wanda was quite and reserved, never really stood up for herself. One day she announced to all that heard that she had a hundred of the most beautiful dresses in her closet at home. The reality of it was that while she did have dresses in her closet they were not in actuality real. They were pictures that she had created. To take this as a lie is not properly correct.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book about real life
This book is a very good book that puts you inside of 11 year old Parvana's shoes. It depicts the horrors of life under the taliban rule well. While it is grusome, the auther shows the horrors without too much detail, so it is safe for younger readers, though i wound not recemend it to anyone younger than 10. You see life in this war torn land from the eyes of a girl worring about her father in jail, while forced to hide her true identity so her family can survive.

I bought this book for my 3 year old daughter and 4 year old son after I saw their older cousins all clamoring for it at a relatives house. My daughter has not shown a lot of interest in learning her letters thus far so I have been looking for something fun that would teach her without her knowing it.

Ages 1-3. This appetizing alphabet book shows fruits and vegetables so juicy and alive, you'll wish they could jump off the page and into your mouth. Even vegetable haters will find it hard to resist the vibrantly colored collage illustrations, which make each item look fascinating and appealing. Being a teacher of English, I recommend this book because it's a must-have item, one can learn better about fruit and vegetables by looking at them. It can used by students of all ages

4-0 out of 5 stars The baby loves it!
My little guy really loves this book- he can name all the fruits and vegetables, and pretends to eat them off the page! However, it does not translate into him eating the real thing. We also LOVE the lap size! So many board books are really too little for him to look while mom and dad are reading. These lap-sized editions are wonderful for solving that problem!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to nutrition
I have a picky eater so I bought this book hoping to create an interest in new and healthy foods. It has done that and much more. With all of the characters out there it is refreshing to reinforce alphabet lessons with non-animated items that appear in real life. Plus, it is hysterical to hear a toddler repeat words like "radiccio." This is a great book and a superb idea. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Witty, Wonderful and Sooooo Good!
My daycare kids love this book. There is a scream of glee when they see it. It's a fun read. This book has a great rhythm to it. The kids sign a long when I sing Mr. Bird's song. " I love my house. I love my nest. In the all the world this nest is best." MUST HAVE BOOK! I loved this book as a child. My daughter loved and now my daycare kids love it.
4-0 out of 5 stars engaging story but bad stereotypes
My daughter enjoys this book, but the gender stereotypes make me cringe. In this book, Mrs. Bird complains and bosses her good-natured husband around so we have the typical nag and hen-pecked husband. For some reason, gender stereotypes sometimes both me more when they are in animal books than when actual people are depicted.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A great read-aloud book!
This is an excellent book for reading aloud, especially to a group of toddlers! It's light and easy to hold. The text is large and clear. There is a nice rhythm to the simple and concise sentences. The colorful collage illustrations are almost all double-page vertical, easy to see from a distance, and consist of objects children will be anxious to point out and identify. At the end of this simple story about building a snowman there is a section that pictures and identifies the items used in the collages: buttons, fabrics, fruits, buttons, etc. It's perfect for a game of: "where can you find this [bell] in the story?" "How many of these [seeds] can you find?", and perfect as a springboard for a snowman craft using items from your own sack of 'good stuff'.There is also an explanation of snow with photographs of real snowmen, and directions for making popcorn balls. This book is fun to read and look at, well worth reading over and over.

You walk into your first encounter with "Snowballs" with the vague sense that this is going to be yet another winter picture book containing figures made out of cut paper. And though you are well aware of Ezra Jack Keats's "The Snowy Day", you decide to give Lois Ehlert's book a go anyway. You're hoping you'll end up pleasantly surprised by what you may find. And you're in luck. You are.5-0 out of 5 stars gherring
My 4 year old son loves this book.We first learned of the book in his preschool. He came home one day and talked about this book all afternoon. The next day we checked it out at the library and liked it a lot. The book is very creative and colorful which captures a young child's attention. There are so many different items that we could identify and learn. My sonwants me to read this book many times throughout the day and frequentlyasks when it is going to snow. This is a great book by Lois Ehlert. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Myriad of illustrative techniques.Informative book about leaves.
The illustrator uses vivid photographs, paper cut images, nature colors and pressed leaves to illustrate a child's description of a seed growing to a sapling. The writing consists of nice large letters and smaller typed descriptions of 'bird treat' or 'sugar maple', 'round-pointed spade' or 'downy woodpecker'. The last four pages of the book are an indepth look at leaves, buds, roots and sap, bar, seeds, etc. Great book to read to kids in the fall days. Good to use with an exercise of asking kids to go outside and each bring in something different. As you read the book to them, they will have a tactile example to go along with the pages in the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars My Kids Love It!
This book is a must-read every autumn in our home and was purchased for us by Grandma who saw how enthusiastically one of her other grandchildren responded to it.When I surprised them with it last night at bedtime, (along with When Autumn Comes, also recommended) they hung on every word.Thisbook is both colorful and educational and has become a "classic" seasonal book for our family. My daughters (now age 9) plan to read it to their 5-6 y/o school book-buddy this year. You can't go wrong with this selection.

5-0 out of 5 stars if you're a fan of E. Nesbit books, you'll like these
    E. Nesbit was one of J.K. Rowling's favorite authors when she was growing up. We've enjoyed her books as well as the Harry Potter books and the Narnia books. Apparently Edward Eager is a fan of E. Nesbit as well -- he mentions it in Half Magic.
5-0 out of 5 stars I met these books in 1966 and they still are the best !
A very good children's librarian recommended these to me the summer that I was 9 years old - I remember being sad as I finished each one but later begging my Mom to buy me all of the books in the series so that I could enjoy them again and again. The children in the stories are witty, not easily fooled and have independent minds - so different from many other book children of the time. I think my favorite is the 7 year old spunky Martha in the first two. Of course we have all wanted to go on a Quest with knights and damsels in distress. I just introduced my husband to the series and he loved them as well - I say snap up this set as quickly as possible and enjoy the pure magic. ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars Color,color,color!
As usual, Lois Ehlert stimulates and educates the young reader about the mysteries of caterpillars to butterflies. Not only are the colors absolutely stunning, she provides factual information about different species. This book was a fabulous preparation for my classroom of small children as they watched their own caterpillars prepare for their magical transformation!

    5-0 out of 5 stars A Life's Journey
Waiting for Wings is a picture book showing the life cycle of a butterfly. The story uses tantalizing pictures and simple words to explain how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. The book takes the reader through the stages of the caterpillar's life. Once the caterpillar has become a butterfly the story changes to how a butterfly lives its life. The illustrations pull the reader into this book. The print is large and easy to read for young reader. The text also rhymes for two pages at a time. As the caterpillar grows the pages become larger, until the butterfly hatches. As the butterfly begins its flight the pages are full size. The illustrations and page sizes are wonderful for young readers. This book also contains identification pages on butterflies and the flowers they eat.

Great introduction to the ABC's, as well as a loved book for your young reader. My 5 year old loves to read the book, and my two year old loves me to read it to him.Great book for the early years.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great, but not complete
My 2 year old loves this book and we read it together in a very rythmic way - like the narrator on the "Read with Me" dvd version. But this board book has only half the story - what happened to the rest of it?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is my two-year-old's favorite book! It is very catchy and he has even begun to memorize some of it. He wants me to read it to him again and again. Sometimes he takes the book away and pretends to read it to himself. The colors are vibrant and fun, and the large alphabet illustrations catch my son's attention enough that he is beginning to recognize and name some of the letters on his own as I read the book to him. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars This Book is Overrated!
This book is more a prententious piece of art than educational material. If it weren't for the bright colors and 'easy to rip' pages my toddler wouldn't have an interest in this book. What does it teach children?Nothing at all.All the animals look the same to toddlers with nuances only an adult can distinguish. The only reason this book won an award it appeals more to adults who are bored of the common formula found in most children's books. There's a reason we keep finding the same formula in books- "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

    5-0 out of 5 stars A Delight!
My 2 year old just discovered this darling book. He enjoys running his fingers over the cut out areas and talks to the animals as they appear. We haven't had any problem with the quality of the book. The pages are nice and thick and have held up to being drag around by my little guy- And I'll admit he can be tough on books! Color zoo has become a night time favorite. This one is a keeper!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Fun, & Educational
