Inkspell.....
This book was on my bookshelf in a less than a week after I read Inkheart.I really enjoyed it and could not put it down. Cornelia Funke used very good detail and surprised me very much as well.I never would have suspected some of the things that happened but I must admit that I expected some things that did not happen.I cannot say that one book was better than the other but I can say that it is a must read for all ages!

Not just for kids
Cornelia Funke follows up her fantastic adventure, Inkheart, with a more in depth and more mature sequel.Younger kids can still appreciate the excitement and the magic, but a young adult or even adult reader can find enjoyment between the pages.The character development delves even deeper in this book.Inkheart explored what would happen if you could make your favorite characters real.Inkspell asks: What do you do after ten years away?Can you ever go back to an old life? And finally: can you choose who you love?
What I think about Inkspell
I like Inkspell and Inkheart very much and I am hoping for the next book. My dad and I are thinking that it will probably start out with the word Ink (although he has not read it yet).

A Garden of Love
Seedfolks is a 69 page book, an easy read. Seedfolks is a book that shows that all different races, religions, cultures, and ages can come together to make something nice and beautiful and have meaning. They took a dump-like place and made it into something beautiful.
A Book for Building Community
This small book (69 pages) contains thirteen vignettes, each written from the point of view of a different person. Although the people begin as strangers from various ethnic backgrounds, they become acquainted as each cultivates a part of a vacant lot. As the lot becomes a place of beauty, individual lives are transformed as well -- and a community is created.
Good reading for children
This is a good book for children who does not understand the meaning of working together. friendship
This is one of my favorite children's books. It reminds me that friendship is something to value and savor for every moment, and is not something to take for granted. Just as Corduroy was doing everything in his power to find his lost butten so he would be wanted, the little girl was saving her money to have companionship from Corduroy.

A must have for storytime before bed
We started reading this book to my daughter at about 6-8 months old. She's now 2 and STILL loves the book. It's one of her favorites.

We love this book.
We love this book. My 20 month old daughter and I. We read it every night. It is the last book we read before nursing. It has nice ryhmes and the illustrations are beautiful too. Much nicer than any of the other going to sleep books. I highly recommend this book for small children to add to your nighttime ritual.

Absolutely wonderful.
Like Harry Potter, there is a reason this series draws fans from all ages, all over the world. And like Harry Potter, it's being turned into a movie.
Better Than Expected
I thought this book was way better than most of the reviews portrayed it.I really enjoyed the concept of this book.It was definitely new and exciting.I'm not going to write a plot summary.Amazon and some of the reviewers do a way better job than I could.I didn't think it started out boring at all.It did get a little bogged down in the middle.I think it may have been from where this book was translated.I found it easy to get involved with the characters.I would really recommend this to young adults and adults who love fantasy.

UNSPEAKABLE GOOD!
My daughter is 5 and we've just finished reading this book together.I love this book on so many levels that I have trouble putting words down.Funke (or Funke's translator, not sure which) delivers a page-turning, compelling story about adventure, friendship, loyalty and doing the right thing.She does all of this amid perfect sentence structure, flawless grammar, strong character development, larger than life imagery and unparalleled story telling.I have not a single complaint about this book other than it's not long enough!Oh how we both long for more!I read this book to my daughter for an hour each night at bedtime (remember, she's only 5) and usually an hour each day.There were many wonderful opportunities for discussion about lessons in the book and new vocabulary for my daughter.There are no truly "bad guys" in this book (aside from Nettlebrand whose life is borrowed anyway) and those who made some poor decisions are given opportunities to redeem themselves in the end.The characters are so strong and lovable!I can't say enough about this book.I do hope someone will take on the task of putting it to the big screen.It will be a veritable feast for the eyes.

Best Book Ever!!!!!
Wow!! This is the best book I've ever read. Sorrel, "Mr. Grumpy", is hilarious !Ben is a decent character.Firedrake is a good character and sleepy head.Twigleg is a great character.He's best when he tricks his first master.Nettlebrand the crazy, demanding, dumb, gold "dragon" is a weird enemy.He hunts dragons for no reason at all.I hope you like this as I do, but if you don't .... oh well oh well.Plus lots of Accelerated Reader Points at school!!!Aced it!

captivating!
This book is a wonderful read. I couldn't put it down till I finished it, and I literally locked myself in my bedroom with my misic blaring so that nobody could interrupt me. The Constitution
The book Shh!We're Writing y the Constitution by Jean Fritz.They all had to meet and they all showed up at different times.Benjamen Franklin was carried by some prisoners.This is a good book and you will learn alot from it.Theme is a good story element for this story because you learn alot about life. If you like books about the constitution than you will like this book.

The point of Jean Fritz's "Shh! We're Writing the Constitution" is that contrary to popular opinion, America had to be dragged kicking and screaming into becoming a new nation. While it is true that Americans were happy to be independent of Great Britain, the colonies that were now states had become used to being sovereign and many of them wanted to keep it that way. Illustrated by Tomie de Paola,, this engaging juvenile history tells how fifty-five delegates gathered in Philadelphia in the summer of 1787 to attempt to draw up a plan for the future of the United States. The result was the writing of the Constitution, despite the fact that initially no one agreed to either what should be in it or even if a constitution should be drawn up in the first place.

A fabulous, multi-dimensional book!
Tough Boris a story about a pirate...but the pictures tell a much different story than the words convey.In the end, it seems Boris isn't all that tough after all. I think it's a fabulous book that can really stimulate a child's powers of observation and ability to communicate what they see. It also illustrates different emotions, shows children that things aren't always what they first seem to be, and that people have many different facets and layers to who they are. It shows that we should take the time to look deeper into a person's heart before coming to a conclusion about them.A great social "study"! I use it in my preschool classroom.

Wonderful Book!
My three year old, who loves pirates, adores this book. The text is very simple, and poignant. The pictures allow the reader to create his or her own story about a stolen violin. The predictability of the text ("He was tough! All pirates are tough. He was massive! All pirates are massive . . . ") makes it fun for the child to follow along, and introduces some vocabulary as well. A great book.

So you think you're a tough guy huh?!
This is a wonderful story about a pirate who's rough and tough on the outside, but has a soft side too.Death is treated matter-of-factly with no philosophical overtones (you fill in the blanks when they ask, "why did the parrot die", or "what happened when the parrot died?") and children identify with Boris about their self-concepts and reactions to conflict and fears in their life. In the end, Boris teaches children that it's okay to be a nice guy and still be tough, and that it's okay to be sad and cry sometimes.I recommend this book to children over the age of 4 (mainly because of the slightly scary pirate scenes involving angry faces, swords and scuffling-nothing gorry)- all the way through adulthood!

The offbeat style of this wonderful story--and of Julie Vivas'sperfectly matched illustrations--couldn't be summed up better than by the oddness of the first sentence: "There was once a small boy called Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge and what's more he wasn't very old either." Wilfrid lives next to a retirement home, filled with folks like "Mrs. Jordan who played the organ" and "Mr. Hosking who told him scary stories."But his favorite old person is 96-year-old Miss Nancy. Everyone says Miss Nancy has lost her memory, and despite the fact that Wilfrid doesn't even know what a memory is, by accident he helps her find it. Try to remember the kind of September...

Bull Run
Bull Run- the first major battle of the Civil War. This book by Paul Fleischman describes that battle in the perspective of sixteen people. These people are very different from each other, all the way from northerners to southerners, from slaves to military leaders. Each point of view brings out a different purpose for the war, and gives a new meaning to controversy. All the people in the book are related to each other so much, but are very deeply divided. This book does describe the battle and events leading to the Battle of Bull Run, but has very little flow. It is not a very good book, and is not recommended as a source of reference.
Characters come alive!
Paul Fleischman has a unique way of intertwining characters and their perspectives of the Civil War.Great for classrooms and building presentations.This is a great way to teach summarizing by reading all of the vignettes for one character and summarizing their involvement with Bull Run.
Mondo monologues sans monotony
You can accuse Paul Fleischman of a lot of things.Laziness is not one of them.When I told the kids in the bookclub I run that we were going to be reading something called "Bull Run" by a Mr. Paul Fleischman, they were quick to inform me that they were already familiar with him."He's the guy who wrote, 'Joyful Noise'!", cried one delightedly.I agreed that this was indeed his best-known work but that, "Bull Run" was probably going to prove to be a little different from a poetry book of insect noises.This turned out to be a particularly foresighted statement when some concerned parents informed me that they were not comfortable with the violence of this book and would rather that their children not read it.I was caught a little unawares.I shouldn't have been.If you are one of those concerned parents, allow me to tell you that yes, there is violence in "Bull Run".Heck, you're not going to have a whole book about a single exceedingly bloody battle without some blood actually making it into the text.However, the battle violence is brief and the story a compelling one.If you've a kid just hankering for the glories of combat, this should snap them out of THAT little fantasy right quick.

Reading Magic
This is one of the best books I have read. It not only provides a useful guide of how to practice reading aloud to children it shatters many old ideas about teaching children to read. As a senior teacher at my school I will certainly recommend this for every teacher on staff, both young and old.

Helpful information for parents willing to develop their childen readership
In general the book provides some simple tips of how to help your children to learn reading by having fun and develop a taste for reading. It worked for me, and I would recommend it for parents that are eager to provide their children with a push for developing this important skill.

Brilliant Book by a Beloved Children's Author
As a Speech Language Pathologist and Children's Literacy Coach I can attest to the fact that reading to children is a critical element in literacy acquisition. Children must learn the flow of language and the variance and flexibility of words in order to appreciate literature and write well. Reading to children of ALL ages ( yes even middle and high school!) is critical for the development of advanced reading, writing and listening skills. What can be better than creativity and imagination being fostered during a warm, entertaining storytelling session.....with the stories coming from brilliant authors ( like Mem Fox)? I recommend this book to all my parents, my fellow teachers and to my friends. It makes a great book for new parents. I Teach My Creative Writing Students with this Book
I was introduced to Ralph Fletcher's A Writer's Notebook this during the Coastal Area Writing Project, Coastal Carolina University, Janet Files. This "project" is an intensive, 4 week writing "submersion" for teachers.We learn how to teach our students how to write. Really write.Not how to write an essay for test, but to write descriptively and passionately.

Are you comfortable with books that make you think?
When I was 9 I was finally moved up to the advanced reading group in my class. In order to catch up, I had to read Harriet the Spy in its entirety over Thanksgiving break. I was extremely dismayed, I had never even seen a book so big, much less read one! But, I devoured it in two days. I didn't live in New York and I had never kept a journal, but everything that happened in the book was completely familiar. It was, I think, the first work of literature I had ever read on my own.
The BEST book i've EVER read in my life...
Harriet the spy iis my favorite book EVER. It has been since i was 6, and i still love it. Its so hard to explain it in words..you just might have to read it yourself

beautifully written
The "Thief Lord" is a wonderful contemporary story full of loss, beauty, adventure and a little bit of magic.Cornelia Funke's book has one several literary prizes and even bumped Harry Potter off the best sellers list in Germany and Northern Europe for a time.It never talks down to kids and is engaging to adults as well.The imagery of Venice is dead-on (just like I remembered) and the characters(Prosepero, Scipio) are richly portrayed.This is a story that is light on the fantastic but heavy on imagery and imagination just like the classics!

The Great Brain
The Great Brain details the good-natured profiteering of Tom D. Fitzgerald, the middle of three brothers growing up in 1890s Utah.Tom's younger brother J.D., the reader spends the entire book gleefully at Tom's side, rooting for him, the prototypical sympathetic scoundrel, as he threads his way in and out of dozens of unlikely schemes. The Great Brain, Tom D. Fitzgerald, is a very smart, but also very greedy boy, who finds all kinds of ways to make a penny (back when a penny was worth something). The chapters mostly involve him trying to con people out of their money OR trying to make money from schemes. Yet he also uses that great brain to solve problems for others kids, such as Andy who thinks he is so plump useless without his lost leg that he tries to kill himself or the Jenson kids who got lost in the Skeleton Caves.. I recommend this book to kids who enjoy reading. Most kids will find out that they will really like this book.

Awesome Books
Wow, everyone keeps talking about how educational they were. I read them when I was a kid, and If I had known how educational they were when I was a kid, I wouldn't have devoured every single one of them with relish. I read a lot when I was a kid, and these books are the ones that stand out, above all as the best I read. Your kids will absolutely love them, and so will you. But let's keep this educational stuff a little hushed up.

Whoever you are (Reading Rainbow Book)
It is a good start on introducing children to other cultures and helping them to understand the similiararities, but it generalizes a bit..some of the people look like stereotypes

All the world's children have the same wants and needs
I am a Lutheran church librarian and I am glad I bought this very satisfactory book for our church library.Its text stresses that children are the same the world over.They have the same feelings and needs, and have the same hopes and dreams.The illustrations are a nice change from the usual.Each page is surrounded by a gold picture frame in which faux jewels are embedded.The illustrations appear to be tempera or opaque watercolor, drawn in Persian style.The colors are very saturated.The book's cover gives you an idea of what they look like.The message of this book is one of diversity--that even though children live in different parts of the world and may have different nationalities, races, ethnicities, languages or faiths, they still have the same hopes, dreams and daily needs.This is a very important message for children to hear in today's world where there is so much suspicion of those we "perceive" to be different.The more children realize that kids are the same everywhere, the more tolerant they will be.Children pick up prejudice by the time they are three years of age, say researchers, so you have to nip it in the bud very early, and this book does that in a wonderful way.

WONDERFUL Book!
This book is a big hit with my PRE-K class! I was pleasantly surprised at how responsive and attentive they were while I was reading this. They have memorized most of the book. They all loved it! Worth the wait
Picture this:Sunday morning following Halloween.The living room is littered with boxes full of costumes that need to go back into the attic.Bags of candy adorn several tables.Wrappers adorn the floor.I get up early, before the others, to try to put the Halloween genie back into his bottle.One by one, the others rise and descend the stairs.I can see each foot and then the pj'd body appear on the stairs from where I'm sitting.Piled next to me are some books that arrived from amazon.com on Friday, unnoticed due to the holiday festivities. The illustrations in this book are beautifully done and the text flows nicely but for an author and illustrator who are or were from New Hampshire and Vermont the facts are wrong for the areas seemingly depicted in the book. The illustration look like New England and moonflowers would prpbably have been killed by frost or would definitely be winding down, sea turtles nest at the furthest north in Virginia and would mostly be hatched out, and luna moths are long gone.There are lots of great things that occur around the harvest moon, these aren't some of them.Children's books should be factual even if they are fiction. ...
