A beautifully produced book, spectacular illustrations, a heartwarming story. Especially perfect for a read aloud with 3rd and 4th graders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rabbit Run
This beautiful book, both in design and form, is an example of simplicity at it's best. A doll rabbit known as Edward Tulane to his owner (a small girl named Abilene) lives a life of privilege, he has the finest clothes, he has the love of a child, and he has a beautiful gold pocket watch of his very own. There is one problem however, though Edward knows love, for Abilene does love him so, he doesn't understand love. And because he doesn't understand love, he can not love nor can he know what it means to be loved. 5-0 out of 5 stars Truley and purley amazing
This book is not only pages with letters typed on them but a true masterpiece. As I read it I cried, jumped for joy and felt that Kate Dicammilo was an amazing person. Her books (Because of Win-Dixie, The Tale of Desperaux and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane) all have won well deserved awards and loved by all who read that feel the story as if were true and truly heartwarming. I've read the story countless times and each time I feel that the world is a wondrous place. Even though Edward is a china rabbit who lives, I didn't feel that it was cartoony and amusing. I felt that it was a true story and not a book that makes you laugh at how cartony it is. You MUST read this book if you are not just a kid who thinks a book is only pages and print. Becasue it's not. I have proof; The Miraculous Story of Edward Tulane. Thanks for reading.

Sent in 1910 to live with distant relatives who own a rubber plantationalong the Amazon River, English orphan Maia is excited. She believes she is infor brightly colored macaws, enormous butterflies, and "curtains of sweetlyscented orchids trailing from the trees." Her British classmates warn her ofman-eating alligators and wild, murderous Indians. Unfortunately, no onecautions Maia about her nasty, xenophobic cousins, who douse the house in bugspray and forbid her from venturing beyond their coiffed compound. Maia, however, is resourceful enough to find herself smack in the middle of moreexcitement than she ever imagined, from a mysterious "Indian" with aninheritance, to an itinerant actor dreading his impending adolescence, to aremarkable journey down the Amazon in search of the legendary giant sloth.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great book!
LOoking for an adventerous but challenging book?Eva Ibbotsons book Journey to the River Sea is and exciting story about a young girl named Maia who is sent to live in the Amamzon because of all of her money as well as because her parents passed away. She is nervous about her journey when she finds out how different her governess or nanny/teacher is far from her daydreams of a pleasent and exciting mentor. But, she soon learns to love her governess, Miss Minton or "MInty."With many exciting journeys and daydreams that really do come true, like traveling down the Amamzon river and many other exciting journeys, this book is one that you'll never want to set down- and I really mean it!I was thrilled to find a book that had so many different ways of keeping your attention, from one chapter to the next. With happy, sad, and thrilling parts, this book is a great chioce for skilled and active readers.Enjoy this exciting journey to the Amazon!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Journey to the River Sea
A well written story about a young orphaned girl's journey from Britain to Brazil where she begins a new life with very distant relatives who are only interested in the money they receive for keeping her.
4-0 out of 5 stars Journey to the River Sea
This book, Journey to the River Sea was a very good read. I liked this book especially because I have never been to the Amazon and I thought this was a very descriptive book on the subject. I have read many of Eva Ibbotson's works and this book is one of her greatest. But I do not recommended her latest books because they have started to suck. My favorite part of this book was when Clovis wants to keep living in west wood because he doesn't want to kill Sir Aubrey and also to save Finns life. I think if you are about 2-102 you should read this. I give this book about 4 stars out of 5 So all in all I thought Journey to the river sea was totally awesome! So you better read it.... OR ELSE!!! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Kipper and his little friend Arnold are on an alphabet search. It allstarts when the young pig Arnold finds an ant. "Aa is for ant. And Arnold."Well, to be perfectly honest, it starts a little earlier, before the book evenofficially begins, when Kipper the pudgy brown dog tells a zebra, "We won't needyou till much, much later." Throughout, as Kipper and Arnold find (and sometimeslose) a buzzing bumblebee, a caterpillar (actually, the caterpillar finds them),a duck, and a menagerie of other alphabetized critters, the earnestly eagerzebra appears, ever hopeful that his day in the sun has arrived. "Nn is for No,not now!" Kipper tells him. After "Juice...And a bit of jam, too," "Splish!Splosh! Splash! And six squishy slugs," and V, which is "very, very hard" (whenthey can't find a volcano, they make a picture of one instead), the zebra asksone last time. "Is it my turn? Is it? Is it?" Kipper is happy to report, "Yy isfor Yes!" The zebra stands proudly in the middle of the page, and everyone says,"Zz is for Zebra!"Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but...
A really nice book that covers each letter of the alphabet. It has easy-to-read large print and clean, tidy drawings of some of the familiar Kipper characters (mainly Kipper and Arnold).
5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet introduction to the alphabet for your toddler
I loved the Kipper A to Z Alphabet Adventure for my toddler. The Kipper illustrations are some of my favorites; they are sweet and gentle. This book is positioned more as a first alphabet book for toddlers. There are only one or two concepts with each letter. However, this is a book with paper pages as opposed to a toddler's board book.

I love Eva Ibbotson whatever she is writing and this has to be my favorite of all her books.Annika is a charming heroine and all the characters in the books are well developed including the minor ones. The descriptions of Vienna are lovely and made me want to travel there.Just a very enjoyable read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Old-Fashioned Story, with Something for Everyone
The Star of Kazan by Eva Ibbotson is a wonderful old-fashioned story. The cover of the edition that I read includes a NY Time blurb "with echoes of Frances Hodgson Burnett." Perhaps it was the power of suggestion, but I could really see these echoes myself (particularly of "The Secret Garden").
5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely
This book seems kind-of long when you first look at it but it needsto be long to fill in all of the detail. I loved all of the twists that I never would have thought of happening. The end is very surprising, but very good. Eva Ibbotson did a wonderful job writing

5-0 out of 5 stars If you haven't met Flossie, you should.
Little Red Riding Hood is essentially a British folk tale.Flossie is a quintessentially American product. She's smart as a whip, cute as a button, and clever without being obnoxiously sassy or brash. She minds her manners while protecting her basket of eggs. She lives in the rural south of sometime past.Big Mama sends her to take some eggs to a neighbor because a fox has taken all the neighor's eggs.Big Mama warns Flossie to watch out for the fox because they surely do love eggs, and off Flossie goes in her pigtails and pinafore. She does meet up with the fox, and she cleverly outsmarts him, but you aren't sure she's going to do it until the last page, when she reveals what she's known all along.Patricia McKissack says this is one of the storiestold her as a child.I can't find the source, but I read something else this gifted author wrote once about this 'black Little Red Riding' story. As best I recall, what she said is that this isn't a 'black Little Red Riding Hood story," it's a Flossie and the Fox story, and there's no need to have 'African American' substitutes for the traditional tales which we all should know, because we all should know them. She didn't write this story as a substitute- it's just another really good, ripping yarn that we *also* all should know.I hope I'm not misrepresenting what she said, but that's how I remember it.At any rate, I agree that this is a really good story for all children and their parents, and it stands boldly on its own merits, and Flossie is a little girl I'd be proud to know.
5-0 out of 5 stars Meet the smartest and bravest little girl in children's lit.
Flossie Finley, the smart and feisty heroine of this book is one of my favorite characters in all of childrens literature. The story is an African American variation on Little Red Riding Hood, but Flossie is no wide-eyed innocent who has to be saved in the end by the big, brave woodcutter. She can save herself, thank you very much. The way she tricks the fox who wants to devour her basket of eggs is delightful. Every little girl (and probably every boy as well) ought to be introduced to this brave and resourceful child.5-0 out of 5 stars Flossie and THe Fox, a winner with the children
Flossie And The Fox is a story that is absolutly loved by my children, one you will be asked to read again and agian. When flosie is asked to run anerrand for her grandmother, the curios girl runs into a fox on her way, yetnot the typical fox. In order to keep her eggs from being eaten she mustkeep the fox's mind of those eggs.Through her journey in the woods she isable to use her qaint childlike cleverness to entertain the foxes ego. Great story! Brilliant plot!Should be made into a movie!Exellent antibias story as well, flossie speaks as a young african american girl wouldgrowing up in the country in Tennese, The fox uses proper Engish, and thenarrator uses the language of the day.Highly recomended! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this book.
I know that for those who have read this book have found it be disturbing for little children. Honestly, I don't think Hans C. Anderson would have intended this book to be just for adults. I believe he had a heart felt message for all ages. Also, the fact that it introduces real life and after life for a child is very good. Plus, it can also teach a child many other lessons. I am definitely going to read this to my kids. When I first read the little match girl I was not expecting the ending at all. So when the ending did come I cried. It affected me so much. The heart wrenching story of this little girl really hits you hard. Please read this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars "The Little Match Girl "
"The Little Match Girl" by Hans Christen Andersen was the first book I read as a child that affected me profoundly. I was able to make a personal connection to the text because I too was a young girl who was impoverished at the time. I knew what it felt like to be cold and hungry and I related immediately to the main character.
3-0 out of 5 stars May be too disturbing for some children

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough...
I read Ibbotson's "Island of the Aunts" and loved that book, so I picked up "Platform" and eagerly read through it. I was, however, disappointed with the predictable storyline. The only saving point was that the ending didn't happen quite like I thought it would, but the prince was still the prince and everyone lived happily ever after, yadda yadda yadda. Borr-ring.

3-0 out of 5 stars a fun, quick read

3-0 out of 5 stars A charming book for children
BELLA AT MIDNIGHT by Diane Stanley is a sweet, enchanting story filled with intrigue, chivalry and magical gifts. Young Isabel lives among the peasants of a quaint medieval village not aware that she is the daughter of a knight in the king's service. Bella, as her foster family calls her, is raised as a blacksmith's daughter to be respectful, kind and industrious. Those qualities will shine through in her time of need when she finds herself in the middle of a 100-year-old war. The values instilled by her adoptive parents and the courage given to her by birth converge to help Bella save a good friend and bring a prophesy to life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Impossible things are happening every day
Hello, Diane Stanley. You're looking well today.Could it be the result of a new haircut?A new shirt?Or could it be the fact thatyou've just written a work of fiction that is getting resounding, unending, and universal applause?I think that might be the case. You look at "Bella At Midnight" and you don't exactly know what to think. It's a nice cover and all, but is it any good?Well, there's a starred review of it in Kirkus, a starred review of it in Booklist, and a starred review of it in School Library Journal. So, yes, it is indeed good.More importantly, it does something that I would have seriously doubted possible until this time.It takes that old chestnut of a Cinderella myth, pumps it full of new life and vitality, and sends it spinning off into the ether like some kind of newfangled original tale.I still had qualms with some aspects of the storytelling, but for three-dimensional characters, magnificent plotting, and a great bit of writing through and through, "Bella At Midnight" is near impossible to beat.

5-0 out of 5 stars A 5 Star plus book
We, my students and I, love this book. It is a main take-out in our school library. I teach 3rd grade and I love to introduce my students to the arts. I find that Rachel Isadora's books often deal with artistic themes and I love all of them. I especially like this book because of the illustrations and the history that she writes about. I thank you for this super addition to our collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Play On
This is a most wonderful book. I am a music teacher and just went online to order a 10 for my students. I love this book and find it very helpful when teaching about classical music, especially to young children. I hope Ms. Isadora is planning on creating more books about composers and music in general.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Pictures are the Thing!
YOUNG MOZART by Rachel Isadora is an acceptable way to introduce young children to the child prodigy Mozart. The very basic facts of his life story are outlined clearly and precisely. There are a few interesting anecdotes to liven the text: his father's nightly duets with the very young Mozart, Mozart's introduction to Marie Antoinette, his own children's pet starling, and his friends gathering around his death bed to sing the unfinished requiem. But Mozart's life seems quite conventional and tranquil, which is far from the story we know to be true. The pictures in the book, however, are charming and beautiful. It was the illustrations, in fact, that turned my own seven year old son from an audience who insisted he was not going to pay any attention if we didn't read a book about animals into a little boy who wanted to know why Mozart could write music before he could write sentences, why he had to wear a wig, and why he died when he was so young. The basic facts are there, and combined with the pictures make the book more memorable for children. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Awful in every which way.
This review is of the short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" only. This is the first story I've read by Washington Irving, and it'll most likely be my last. I grew up watching the Disney cartoon "The Legend of Sleep Hollow" from 1958, which was narrated by Bing Crosby. It was the only thing that helped me envision this story, as I found the writing very bland and needlessly wordy. It's as if the author just liked seeing his own words on paper.I found the narration to skip, rendering it muddled, and I was at a loss if it was an unseen narrator, the author himself, or whomever.I didn't get a sense of any character, and the horseman was nearly nonexistent.I can see why the 1999 movie "Sleepy Hollow" with Johnny Depp needed much revamping, as this story is very mind numbing.I do not recommend. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Comics Adaption of a Truly Wonderful Classic Short-Story!
This adaption of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" is effective on multiple levels. To begin with, it's a very good adaption, illustrated with beautifully moody painted artwook by Bo Hampton, who is sort of a nouveau legend in comics along with his brother Scott. They aren't prolific, but their works are generally amazing to look at, if not always to read.Fortunately, this time the story is great as well!

5-0 out of 5 stars I couldn't get my eyes of this book!
This book is so interesting. Great detail and a wonderful sesnse of humor. I love that this book includes magical creatures in it. Children and adults should read this book and I am telling you they will love it. Im proud to say this book will make a great book report book and a book just to enjoy. I can't wait to read Eva Ibbotson's other book The Secret of Platform 13. tHis book is fun and awesome I think any child would like to read as I did. I am in sixth grade and I know that everyone will love this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Identical to Monster Mission
Before I review the book, I wanted to comment on something. As you may have read from other reviewers, this book is identical in text/content to another book called "Monster Mission" from the same author. Please don't blame the author for this, as the problem lies with two different publishers both owning rights to print the book. (Puffin, and Macmillan) The book by one publisher has a different title and different cover art but it is the same book, word for word. This happened to another Ibbotson book "The Haunting of Hiram C. Hopgood" and "The Haunting of Granite Falls", are identical as well. To make it more confusing, I bought a book before these US releases, "The Haunting of Hiram" in Canada, and it is also the same book with yet another cover and title.
5-0 out of 5 stars Read It. You'll LOVE it.
Island of Aunts is the book that got me into Eva Ibbotson's books. It's just the kind of book I always dreamed of writing, except I always ended up making it cheesy and overly dramatic. Eva Ibbotson, however, makes her stories purely magical. If you can't decide what to give your children or some kid you know for birthday or christmas, don't hesitate to hand this book. there is only one way they could possibly be disappointed: they read it already. ... Stories Jesus Told is a fantastic book with clever and humorous illustrations. It impacted me and my children through the stories and vivid illustrations. My kids just keep asking to hear the stories over and over again. That in itself speaks volumes. The stories gave me a deeper understanding of the spiritual principles Jesus taught in the scriptures.

Great story rhythm.Pictures are charming, mixing the past with the familiar present items the children will recognize easily.Just the right mix of text and pictures.I read this to my son when he was 5 or 6 years old and when he could read, he read this by himself. Now I want to give my grandkids the chance to read and fall in love with this book, just like we did so many years ago.It is a classic!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful
I purchased several copies of this book years ago for my own children and to give as gifts. It is my godchild's favorite book to read at night. The familiar parables are given an amusing twist with illustrations which enhance the story line and strengthen the underlying lesson.I love this book for both the content and the illustrations and would love to see it reprinted. ...
