5-0 out of 5 stars Rikki-Tikki-Tavi
This is the story of the great war that Rikki-tikki-tavi fought single-handed, through the bath-rooms of the big bungalow in Segowlee cantonment...
5-0 out of 5 stars A young reader's must have
I loved this story as a child, and recently bought this for my daughter. It's been tough getting her to sleep since we began reading this together.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rikki the valiant the true, tikki with eyeballs of flame
As a child, I grew up with Kipling stories. My mother would read me "Just So Stories" and selections from the surprisingly long and complex, "Jungle Book" when I was just a wee lass. And had this lush and lovely version of "Rikki-tikki-tavi" been available to me when I was a kid, I've little doubt that I'd have devoured it just as readily as I did tales like, "How the Elephant Got His Trunk".Though I missed out on "Rikki-tikki-tavi" the written tale, I did take great pleasure in the 1975 Chuck Jones animated (with voices by Orson Wells and June Foray) faithful film of the same story. For those of you eager to instill in your children a sharp jolt of Kipling to the veins, I suggest you start them out on "Rikki", both the film and this lovely picture book, then move on slowly to "Just So Stories" and finally, "The Jungle Book" (but not THAT film). Then, years later, when you're trying to get them to read "Stalkey and Company", you'll have already hooked 'em young.

Editorial Review

"In a dark, dark wood there is a dark, dark house..." So begins this tongue-in-cheek rodent tale of intrigue. Four brave and curious mice follow the trail of a big, scary beast, down the dark red stair, into the dark blue cellar, inside the dark green bottle in the dark purple cupboard. Young readers will squeal in delighted fright when the yellow-eyed monster ("A BEAST!") flies out and across the cellar, up the stairs, out of the house, and into the night. The perpetually rhyming, color-obsessed mice follow in hot pursuit. But is the beast really as horrible as it seems?Read more

This book is creepy throughout, yet is cute. The mice-like animals are spooked, but the resolution is fun.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hog Zeep... Beasty Story is fantastic
We purchased the Beasty Story before we had children. Now that we have children we love it even more! I love the flow of the story and the illustrations as well.My 2.5 year old understands the surprise humor and laughs hardy each time we read this book. It's different than some of Bill Martin, Jr's other work, but is wonderful.Don't miss this!

5-0 out of 5 stars My two year old MUST end her evening with this book!
I am at Amazon to buy this book as we have run into our renewal limit at the Library. The rhyming cadence of this story is reminiscent of other Martin titles, and it makes the reading enjoyable for us as parents as well!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Illustrations kept it going
A legend about a boy who falls out of his family wagon as they are crossing the country. He is forced to raise himself in the wide open west and learn how to protect his life.4-0 out of 5 stars Bland, but the Pictures are Grand
This mild, but event-filled re-telling of the Pecos Bill story lacks the incorrigible air of tongue-in-cheek humour and bold-faced lies of the typical tall tale. However, and especially if your young`uns never heard a tall tale, the wonderful illustrations will partially make up for this. When we started to read this book,we thought those sweet-faced, round-eyed, snub-nosed cowboys looked a little familiar:this guy is the same feller who illustrated HOW MUCH IS A MILLION? which we like alot.My boys love the snake lasso, and we return many times to the fantastic "critter" that Bill wrassles into submission. But breaking-in "Widder-maker" is an let-down after that adventure, I am afraid.I recommend Adrien Stoutenburg`s AMERICAN TALL TALES for older children (9-12yrs) which has few illustrations but whose style is far better suited to the dramatic and poetic nature of the tall tale genre. My seven-year old loves to hear me read those aloud. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Mouse Called Wolf
I thought this book was a funny story. It was funny because a mouse learns to sing and the mouse is friends with a human. I thought the story waas interesting at times because when a human sees a mouse they scream but not Mrs. Honeybee she is nice to the mouse and gives them chocolate. I think you will enjoy this book because it was very interesting. I really enjoyed this book so you should to.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Mouse Called Wolf
I thought this book was a good book because there is always going on. Like when Wolf was singing. I also thought some of the parts were funny. I thought it was funny becausethe only way Mrs.Honeybee could get Wolf to sing was if she gave him a piece of chocolate, and who would have thought, a singing mouse. This book is also weird because that there is a singing mouse and that is funny and very very wierd. It is als weird that Mrs. Honeybee wants to spend all of her extra time with Wolf and Mary (Wolfs mother).

If you grew up with Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight's Eloise books, someof her eccentricity probably rubbed off on you whether you realize it or not.Frankly, it's difficult to remain unaffected by a 6-year-old girl who lives inNew York City's Plaza Hotel, braids her turtle's ears, talks to Mars through apaper cup, and pours water down the mail chute. 5-0 out of 5 stars Every child should grow up with Eloise!
Eloise rocked my world when I was little... now I'm 18 and bringing her books to college! She's an inspiration to six-year olds and adults alike. This book is just another great glimpse into the world of Eloise. I consider it a lesson on how to stay young through use of the imagination. It isn't as great as the original Eloise, but it's still wonderful! I read it to children I babysit for (who love her) and I plan on reading it to children of my own someday! ... Read more

This story is a cute variation of The Gingerbread Man with a Spanish twist. My students enjoy reading the story and comparing it to The Gingerbread Man.My only problem with this book is the use of the traditional name for a donkey. It makes it hard to share with children because they don't understand that that word has another meaning.I wish the author had just used "donkey".Cute illustrations too! ... My children so loved the Rikki Tikki Tavi video--based on a Kipling video--that I wanted to find other Kipling stories on tape (besides the Jungle Book). I wasn't successful, but I found many different editions of Just So Stories. It was hard to choose!
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
It's a nice budget edition of the famous book with sophisticated authors' illustrations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Delightfully funny
Kipling did an excellent job in compliling and communicating these stories.I thoroughly enjoyed each story, with the exception of the one about how writing was invented, which seemed a bit boring to me.

1-0 out of 5 stars what the?????????????????????
I thought this book was confusing. I had to read the book twice to understand it. I would not recommend this book to some one that wants adventure on the first page. This book takes time to get to the adventure. I dislike how the author did not put a lot description of the setting and the characters. I didn't get a good visual of the characters. This book is in a sear. The second book gets a little of the adventure. You have to read the sears to get every little clue. In the back of the book you see six kids. From the description of the book you do not know who's who. This book is for patient people that can wait for the adventure. If I was a teacher and I was grading this paper I would give this paper a C. and even mybe a D- i hated it i would not recomened this book to any one. i hope you will read the ad relizeTHAT THIS BOOK WAS REALLY REALLY BAD.

Editorial Review

Babe is a sensitive soul, deeply loyal to those who are kind to him. So when he is taken in by Farmer Hogget's sheepdog, Fly, it's only natural that he would want to follow in his foster mum's paw-steps. Even with Babe's considerable handicaps as a sheepdog--namely, that he's a pig--he manages to overcome all with his earnestly polite and soft-spoken ways, proving once again that might doesn't always make right. After saving the sheep from rustlers and wild dogs, Babe convinces Hogget that his idea of becoming a sheep-pig "b'aint so stupid" as it might look. But neither Hogget nor Babe, nor anyone else, could have predicted what follows.Read more

In this book, a pig was a prize to be won at a fair in sheep country.Mr. Hogget played the game for the pig. Mr. Hogget told his wife that he played the game for the pig.Mrs. Hogget said I'd like a pig. We can feed him scraps and eat him for Christmas dinner.Fly was training her four puppies when she saw the pig that Mr. Hogget won named Babe.Babe was adopted by Fly and soon learned to herd ducks, chickens, and other farm animals. He really wanted to meet the flock of sheep so he could be like Fly.Will he ever become a useful farm animal instead of a Christmas dinner?Babe saved the flock and convinced them that they would never eat him.Hogget was training Babe for the Grand Challenge Sheep Dog Trials.Mr.Hogget said to his wife see the telly and took off with Babe and Fly..... I reckoned this book for all ages, because it is a cute little book.

Mr. Hogget, a sheep rancher, won a pig named Babe at the fair, very much like the one I went to in Sheridan, WY!When Babe came to the ranch, he was a very little pig, so Fly, the sheep dog, decided to mother him along with her five puppies.Babe was soon calling Fly, Mum.Babe also became friends Maaa, an old ewe who at the time needed to be taken care of separately.Maaa was always complaining on how sheepdog treated sheep.Babe asked, "Mum, will you train me to be a sheep-pig?"She said, "Yes."So, Fly started to train him how to be a sheep-pig on ducks, and soon he was fairly good. One day, when Maaa was back in the pasture with the flock and Fly and Farmer Hogget were at market, he decided to go meet the flock. It was chaos! There were sheep rustlers there!Babe ceased them from stealing all the sheep. From then, on Farmer Hogget let Babe come with him and Fly to check the sheep. The first time he came with them Farmer Hogget tried to get him to work the sheep. He did it perfectly! From then on he did most of the sheep work. One day, he decided to go visit the sheep.Again it was chaos! This time it wasn't rustlers, but worriers! They had Maaa down! Before they could kill her, Babe chased them away.Maaa died soon after.Farmer Hogget was readying babe for the sheep dog trials! Will he win?I recommend Babe the Gallant Pig, because it's very outstanding, exciting, and suspenseful!

5-0 out of 5 stars the life of a frog
Frogs are fascinating creatures. It seems children especially develop a fondness for them. This is a book that teaches children everything they'd want to know about frogs, and more importantly about how frogs start off as tadpoles before turning into frogs. If you have a child and he or she likes playing with frogs, give them this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Kids' Book
This is another great STAGE 1 book in the "Let's Read & Find Out" Science Series. The STAGE 1 Series books are written for preschool and kindergarten-age kids (age 3 to 6) about basic science concepts. 5-0 out of 5 stars very good
This book is very appropriate for any young one learning about frogs. My nephew has learned alot from this book about where frogs come from. The pictures are real and not drawings which I like. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Older Readers, but Not an Ideal Alphabet Book
The format of this book is consistent for each letter of the alphabet. The letter being featured on the page is large and in color. The text length and layout is also consistent page to page. Also, the repeated structure for each letter helps the reader anticipate the same rhythm for each page.
5-0 out of 5 stars A My Name is Alice
I am a Pre-Kindergarten Readiness teacher in my school district for 5 year olds. This book was listed in my Fountas & Pinnell kindergarten phonics text to assist students in learning to read their names in print. I used this story to highlight my students names as we placed them on the word wall in my classroom. I found the text enjoyable and a great learning tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clever ABC Book
This is a great ABC book. It is different from the usual format so it really gets kid's imaginations going. As a teacher I love to have a book that expands vocabulary. This book is good as a model for a class book. I also use it as a part of a first grade maps unit. We find all of these interesting places! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute,Charming and readable
I'm in my 20's but I love children's books. This one is very touching and written from a different slant. I think parents would enjoy it too.

4-0 out of 5 stars A "children's book" that's not really for kids...
Max in India has fantastic illustration art and offbeat textwith lots of play-on-words.Most kids (especially as young as the "4-8" range)will not be able to relate to this tale of a man/dog pondering the meaning of life while expecting his first offspring. It's more like a fun gift book for adults or maybe older kids/teens with an interest in India, art or philosophy. My six-year-old liked the pictures but didn't get anything out of the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, clever "self-help" for your inner child = Max!
Max Stravinsky (poet, dreamer, dog) is back in full color in a charming romp through India's exotic locales and treasures. As he anxiously pursues the "meaning of life," Max encounters Kalman's usualeccentrically lovable characters and valid lessons. This book can be readBY youngsters or read TO them, but it is the inner child in the adult whobenefits the most. Throw away those dime-store psychological self-helptomes...and let Kalman's magic combination of drawings and deliciousvocabulary make you a Swami for life! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars They are ok...
These books are ok. Just not my preference. They just don't have the same feel as other Nancy Drew, they seem to have lowered the maturity level off Nancy and upped the mature relationship between Nancy and Ned. It's still fun to read but just not the Nancy Drew I know. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Unexamined metaphysics
My boy brought this home the school library and the title of the book intrigued me. What is it like to swim by swishing your tail, round and round, in a small little bowl; or, eating fish flakes sprinkled from above when the person decides it's time to be fed; or to live in an environment that deteriorates day after day into murkiness until you are suddenly scooped up by a net and put into an even smaller container while your bowl is being cleaned? What IS it like to be a fish? Alas, there are no answers to that question found in this book -- pity.
