Editorial Review

Do you know how the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River were first formed? How about the Great Plains and the Grand Canyon? Some people think these wonders were established by the forces of nature, but those folks clearly haven't heard of Paul Bunyan, the "strongest, smartest, and tallest hero of the tallest of American tall tales." Paul and his pal, Babe the Blue Ox, were responsible for creating all these geographic features as they worked their way west with their unusual lumber crew. Paul's adventures begin when he is just a baby (who can lift a cow over his head) and continue as he grows into the biggest lumberjack in the world. All the basic stories about Paul Bunyan are here in this rollicking tale, as well as a few inventive incidents added by author and illustrator Steven Kellogg. Saccharine cotton candy.About the only "real" thing left from the folk tales is Babe being found during a blue snow and staying blue. My grandkids' great great grandparents came from a logging past.Am I going to use this book to introduce them to heir own history?Absolutely not.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Pictures for a Great Story!
Paul Bunyan is a great book to entertain anyone. You'll love it! When I first read it I didnt want it to finish it. Can you believe it?!Paul Bunyan is the greatest character ever! Paul Bunyan gets raced in the Wild West fighting through anything that gets in his way.So watch out and dont run into him because he'll knock you off your feet!

Yes, the artwork is clever and cute. But, this book, while it has some good information, is also laced with very negative statements that can frighten a child. It is meant to be humerous - but it is very negative. You judge: here are examples:

5-0 out of 5 stars There's A Great New Spa With 1 Problem...
There's a new spa in town, and Nancy's father, Carson Drew, got Nancy, Bess, and George V.I.P. passes! There's trouble on the home front, however, and the spa is sabatoged. Nancy is on the case! There's another problem, though, and that's that George has been acting pretty strange lately...
5-0 out of 5 stars The secret of the spa is a really HOT book
This book was published in March of 2005, so it is reallly recent. In it, there is a new spa opening in river heights, and the owner is Nnacy's father's client.Mr. Drew got free all day V.I.P passes to the grand-opening, and Nancy and Bess can't wait to go, although George is really reluctant. When they get there, though, there's a mystery: someone's trying to sabotage the spa. But, who?Nancy wants to find out, and like usual, NOTHING'S going to stop her.The sabotages include heat turned way up in the sauna room, meat in the all vegetarian menu, and cockroaches in the mud bath.I bought this book as soon as it came out, and I don't regret spending the money.I give this book 5 stars. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!
This is a truly great book.I noticed there are a couple of people who panned it, saying it was bad. I was surprised at this at first, since they are so very wrong about it.But then I reminded myself how many brother-and-sister couples are getting married and having all kinds of "nature's mistakes" type offspring, many of whom find their way out from the group home to write reviews on Amazon. But for anyone who isn't profoundly retarded, this is a cute, cute book!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is to share.
this is a wonderful, sweet, introspective book with precious, timeless illustrations.I plan on giving it as a gift to friends' children in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Read-Aloud
The Baby Beebee Bird is one of my very favorite books to read aloud to young children. The characters are varied and the baby beebee bird itself has a nice little compulsive personality. The book gives an example of problem solving and, best of all, lends itself to many open-ended questions and what if scenarios for use in the home or in a classroom situation. Most importantly, children love the book, and such love for one book can lead to love of books in general. As a teacher of young children, I believe fostering that love for books is essential to raising a life-long learner. Your children will love this book - have no doubt.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hearing Bee- Bee's in my Sleep
My five year old son checked this book out of our local library and it became addictive. After three more check-outs and hearing Bee- bees every where I took my two children I decided to purchase this book. It is a classic my children absolutely are addicted to. My husband and I now take turns with the animal sounds and really ham up the animals. The illustrations are good and my children love the expressions on the faces. With two boys this book is well loved because of it's loudness, sillyness, and the giggles it produces when the animals fall over with exhaustion.

5-0 out of 5 stars My love for Steven Kellog introduced me to a great book!
I origionally bought this book thinking it was by Steven Kellog.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Once there was a mother Serafina Snow, she had 3 piglets, Percy, Pete, and Prudence. One day Serafina had a brilliant idea to start a waffle making business.Soon her piglets were enrolled at school, played basketball, and were involved in plays. When they grew up the waffle business was handed over to them. Each of them built a house; Percy built a straw house, Pete built a log cabin, and Prudence made his cottage out of bricks. One day they met a wolf named Tempesto who didnt want waffles but wanted to eat them! The wolf knocked down Percy, and Petes houses and moved on to Prudences. The three pigs bombarded him with watermelons, pumpkins, cantaloupes, grapes, and pastries. This caught Tempesto by surprise and he was knocked down. The wolf entered down the chimney but was soon turned into a waffle. In the end Percy, Pete, and Prudence married and had kids.I enjoyed this book because it gave a new idea to the story of the Three Little Pigs, it kinda jazzed it up a little and made it a little more interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully done!
I've read and reviewed most of the basic tellings of "The Three Little Pigs", as well as most of the variants. Here's my take on it.1-0 out of 5 stars No one gets killed, but still violent.
I had the impression that this was not a violent book from a rview that I read.Even though no one dies or gets eaten up, it still is a violent book.I think this book could have been better if it did not have a house crush the police officer to the ground right before he was on his way to help the pigs. And the wolf being steam-pressed in a huge hot waffle iron and then smothered in butter-- ouch!Read more

This is a mind-expanding book. It's quirky (like all of Kalman's books), beautifully illustrated (with real art), and it introduces the character Max the blue dog who stars in some of her later books. It looks like akids book, but really offers something for all who are open to it.Kidscan relate to LuLu and her brother, and adults can better relate to kidswhen they remember their own dreams and fantasies and (if they're lucky)the stories their siblings told to get them to go to sleep.A great book! ... This is an excellent chapter book for children from 8-12.It is a sequel to two previouse books (The Great Cheese Capoer and The Great Rescue Operation)however, it does not require that the other books be read first. They all can be read independent of the others. There are 14 chapters in this book. When the Macy's Santa is missing who can solve the mystery.Three brave mice, of course!Children enjoy this book very much.

2-0 out of 5 stars The final Eloise story completely misses the boat.
Americans have the mistaken belief that stories _about_ children are necessarily _for_ children. This was good for Kaye Thompson, though, because the "Eloise" books were most-often bought by adults for children.4-0 out of 5 stars Who says bawths can' be fun?
About a little girl(Eloise), who is forced into taking a bath, in order to be clean for the Grand Ball. She spends a lot of time in the bawth, pretending to be a boat racer, a skier, and a surfer. She keeps filling the water up, and ends up flooding the whole bathroom. Her room happend to be just above the Ball room.Everyone at the ball is wondering how water is getting all over the place. They all think that one of the hotel's pipes has sprung a leak. Her father, one of the people who are important at the ball, comes up to her room to get her, and realizes she was causing all the water to be in the ball room.First she is in trouble, but then her father looks at what has happend to the Ball Room.It is a pretty good story with an ironic ending.

4-0 out of 5 stars Son of the Mob
The start of the book was an adventure already. It began like any good story should, with a bang as my seventh and eigth grade language arts teacher would say. The book begins describing for the first two or three chapters about the life of a young man that lives in New York. His father is a Mobster that he is always argueing with and getting in fights about his fathers job of killing people and taking their money. So during the entire book Vince (the main character) and his dad Anthony Luca are getting in fights because Vince doesn't agree and he promises never to have anything to do with the mob. Vince can't do anything about it because all the clothes he has ever excepted form his father and mother were from stolen money. Vince isn't the most popular kid at highschool and he doesn't have a girlfreind until he meets the girl of his dreams named Kendra. So they date for a while and when the time comes that she wants to come over to his house he has to say no because his father and Uncles of the mob are always "working" in the house, but he never tells her the real reason of why she can't come over and get to know his family because he always makes wierd excuses. But when he goes to see her family he learns something knew, her father works for the FBI and his main objective is to try to put Vince's dad in jail. So when the time comes that he accually tells her who his dad and how he really knew her dad she was supprised but still wanted to continue their relationship, and they agreed to never go to eachother's houses. When the time comes to be voted for Prom King and Queen there are a bunch of posters that say to vote for Kendra and Vince. He thinks it's her and she thinks it's him, and neither of them want to get voted for because it is a big thing in their part of the town, so if they do get voter they could possible be found out by each other's parents. So the whole thing almost makes them brake up, and they do for a short time. During this time Vince has been trying to help these two men that need help to pay his father $600. While he promised Kendra that he would stay out of his father's business he gets involved and her father being an FBI agent sees this and takes pictures as evidence and Kendra sees the pictures. So after Vince broke his promise she gets really agrivated and that is the reason they break up for some time. The only reason that they don't break up forever, is because Kendra does some research of her own and he is innocent and they get back together. Inconclusion Vince has a hard time dealing with his father's business getting the way with everything, and messing with his life.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book
Jake, Reinvented is "the best" book because of the characters. If there was no characters the book would not have a point. The whole book is based on the characters. Now I will tell you about the book itself. The book is about a boy who moved to a different school. The boy becomes popular in his new school instead of the geek he used to be in his old school. He throws partys every friday night to become even more popular.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Adaptation of "The Great Gatsby"
This book is a wonderful adaptation of "The Great Gatsby", taking place in a high school setting rather than the 1920s.Although Gatsby is an American classic, people often miss the subtle social commentary and seem to not truly understand the significance of all that happens."Jake, Reinvented" on the other hand is extremely readable, and the ramifications of characters' actions are immediately understood and it leaves you truly wanting to know what happens next. This is a good book for all ages, but particularly young adults- the only reason that I can't give it 5 stars is that is not on par with its inspiration.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, easy read, but some gaps in logic
From the first page, Korman sucked me into his novel.Mimicing "The Great Gatsby" in a much more simplistic style, "Jake, Reinvented" follows high school students who attend parties every Friday night at Jake's house. He's the new, mysterious kid in school who instantly wins over the "in" crowd by joining the football team and throwing parties where the beer flows, the pizza is free, and the beautiful people go to mingle.Jake, of course, has reinvented himself to win over the beautiful, self-absorbed, and unavailable Didi.He does win her affection -- somewhat -- but it's not enough for him, and soon his obsession has dire consequences.

Along with hersix dogs, six cats, and miscellaneous goats, donkeys, and chickens, Miss Sladehas lived in Blackberry Bottom for as long as anyone can remember. Parentsforbid their children to go there--"Because she's a witch, that's why"--and thefarmyard stench is enough to keep even the boldest at bay. But when a new familymoves into the cottage up the hill, they soon discover what no one elsehas ever taken the time to see--that Maggie Slade is an intelligent, kind, perfectly sane, wildly wealthy woman, who simply chooses to live her life justas she pleases, with no electricity, plumbing, or any other modernamenities--like banks or bathtubs. 5-0 out of 5 stars A lovely, gently humorous story
Patsy, 8, and Jim, 6, befriend Miss Slade, a neighbor woman who lives in squalor with her six dogs, six cats, donkey, goats and chickens. This is a lovely, gently humorous story with delightful characters, both human and animal. Readers will rejoice when Miss Slade, helped by the kindness of the children and their parents, decides to "turn over a new leaf" on her 70th birthday. The book is generously and charmingly illustrated, too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hard to Put Down
This was a great book, and I couldn't put it down.It is a quick read, if you love mysteries.I was throughly in to it, and I really enjoyed it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Quirky Miss Slade
Miss Slade has lived in Blackberry Bottom for as long as anyone can remember...but who is she really?Everyone believes she's a witch, or at least someone who's "a bit touched in the head" and steers clearof her. With a pirate patch on one eye, Maggie lives in a shabby caravanwith no electricity or plumbing along with her six dogs, six cats, andother miscellaneous critters, it's no wonder she scares people off -- thatis, until a new family moves into town....Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great timeless series
My seven year old daughter just loves these books. She is not only reading more, she is ENJOYING reading more. These stories have been updated in places to make them more relevant to the 21st century, but the great stories remain the same. My only complaint is that there is no "box-Set" available to make buying them much easier. ... Read more
