Editorial Review

Who can resist the allure of the hidden wilderness water hole? Certainlynot one rhino. Not two tigers. Nor three toucans. Pretty soon the delicious poolis drawing moose, catfish, pandas, tortoises... and more than 100 other crittersfrom Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and beyond. But is it our imaginationor is that rhino-sized water hole dwindling to a mere shadow of its former self,a puddle not fit for eight ladybugs, let alone 10 kangaroos? As the seasonschange across the world, and the animals get thirstier, the water supplydiminishes. Eventually, even the flowery-shirted frog that has stoicallylingered through the drought packs his suitcase and takes off. The only hope nowis a drop of rain on the parched earth...

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifilly Illustrated Children's Counting Book
I just added this to our collection of Graeme Base Books. We now have three.Anamalia helps teach the ABC's in a fun way -- The Water Hole teaches counting -- and The Eleventh Hour is a thinking book (try to solve the mystery!)All of his books are wonderfully illustrated. All of them have an underlying puzzle/theme to keep the children's interest. My 3 1/2 year old grandson is crazy about the Water Hole.Actually, all three of them are on the top of his list.He can look at the pages for a long time. That is something amazing since he is hyperactive and sitting doesn't happen for long. He's learning and can find many different things on each page.Since my children were young, these books have been cherished.

5-0 out of 5 stars FABULOUS!!
MY SON LOVES THIS BOOK. HE RECEIVED IT AS A GIFT WHEN HE WAS AN INFANT.NOW HE'S THREE YEARS OLD WE READ IT TOGETHER AND LOVE TO PICK OUT ALL THE OTHER ANIMALS HIDING IN THE PICTURES.IT'S ONE OF OUR FAVORITES.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Counting Book With a Big Difference
This beautiful counting book is wonderfully illustrated and ingeniously thought out. The book works on many different levels (hidden animals, a range of themes) and has provided hours of fun and discussion for our two year old. ... Read more

Each animal arriving from the zoo as a possible pet fails to suit its prospective owner, until just the right one is found. Movable flaps reveal the contents of each package.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful book
My 17 month old loves this book. There is something for him to open on each page and he has learned all the sounds of the animals. This book was recently listed in Parent's magazine as "Our Favorite Baby Books of All Time"and I can see why.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son LOVES this book!!
I have to rate this a 5.I ordered the dog, birds, and the cats.My son was infatuated by them since he was 3 months old.He especially loves the dog one. He's 11 mo. now and if he's fussing or crying, all i have to say is:This is a Dog... and he just starts smiling, laughing and gives me his full attention to finish the story.I just love the look on his face when i start reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great bedtime book-would make a great gift
This book has a wonderful meter for reading aloud as a bedtime book and I would recommend it highly for anyone looking for a bedtime book for a young child. The story is very calming and poetic, not a rhyming sing-song book but a wonderfully comforting weaving of words and illustration to help soothe little minds about the night noises they might hear. You do not have to live in the country to appreciate the descriptions of "the groans and squeaks that houses make" Enjoyable from the city to the fields and everywhere in between.
5-0 out of 5 stars the poetry of night time
An awesome, quiet book. Rylant appreciates the simple beauty of night time sounds, from a creaking house getting comfortable for rest to an old pig rolling over in the straw to a sleeping dog's chain clinking. All quiet sounds that deserve observation. What initially caught my eye was the reference to a screen door closing in the night and the wonder of who might be up that late--I have often thought about things like that and I appreciated someone else's observation of the same thing. And what sold me on the book is when my four-year-old, after several months of none-interest in the book suddenly asked if I would read this book so he could wonder too about the person whose screen door closed in the night--obviously, Rylant's poetry in her prose is endearing and indelible. Szilagyi's artwork is appropriate to the text, neither overwhelming or boring. She has a nice, sublte touch that complement's the poetry of the book. Highly recommended

4-0 out of 5 stars From One Who Knows
I bought this title for Grandma to read to her Grandkids and decided to keep it for our home. This is an excellent portrait of what life really is like in the country:the blackness, the soft sounds, the swooping owl.A great find for parents to read to kids to follow up on a visit to a relative in the country. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Inside the Titanic: A Giant Cut-away Book
My 8 year old grandson is a Titanic nut. He has taken every Titanic related book out of the school library. When I gave him this book he was like estatic, "This is the best book ever Grandmom!" We are now making a Titanic model from a huge piece of styrofoam using this book as reference. The book is easy enough for him to understand (especially the cut aways) but has enough info to keep an adult interested.

4-0 out of 5 stars Giant Cut-away Book
It was a very interesting book. As the title indicates, it shows numerous cut-away pictures of the inside of the Titanic. It was nice to see where dining rooms, sitting rooms, the gym, the pool, etc were in relation to each other and the cabins and state rooms of the passengers. Good book for middle school aged children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for kids
My five-year old son recently became obsessed with the Titanic, so I was very pleased to see that there are actually books written and illustrated with children in mind. However, the illustrations and the information in this book were interesting to me as well!Very well done - highly recommended for kids of all ages! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT book for early Spanish learning
Normally I would say that my daughter is a little old for this type of book. At 5 she is a bit beyond little board books without many words. But for laying a foundation for Spanish, this book is just what both she & I need. The simple sentences allow us to see what exactly each word means, as well as get an intuitive grasp on the grammer, and the pronunciation guide in the back is VERY helpfull.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Family andI?Mi Familia Y Yo
This is another book that I enjoyed by this author. My children have asked me to continue to purchase this books and they read them all the time.I see the joy and excitement on their faces as they say different words in Spanish and actually know the meaning.I feel that it is important for the and myself to learn a second language, and books like these have been able to serve as a base for my entire family. It's easy to read and grasp, and a good reference to look at when necessary.Keep up the great work Gladys and I'll keep reading your books.Learning is a continuous process and now it's become really fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great children's book
This is a book that any small child can love and the fact that it teaches as it entertains is a great tribute to the skill and the heart of the author. Sturdy construction, a size made for "little hands" and bright colors have made it a favorite of my kids. We know several Spanish-speaking families in our church--and this book will help as kids talk to kids, I think. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Halloween Pick For Young Children
This book is a great read to prepare your child for the fun and excitement of Halloween. It displays different American holidays and rates Halloween as Emily Elizabeth's and Clifford's favorites. They show Clifford in different costumes and let's your child interact by asking which would "you" suggest. My 3 years old really enjoys this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cliffords Halloween
I thought this book was so adorable how on every holiday Clifford does something special like for Christmas he dresses like Santa and gives out gifts, on Easter he plays the Easter bunny, and on Halloween he always dresses up, in the book he dressed up as many different things such as the devil, a clown, a witch, and even a ghost! Hes the most adorable dog in the world!! At Emily's party he was a ghost and everyone loved him. How can't you love Clifford? I know I love him! This book is suitable from the ages 0-6. 5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Educational for Children
A change of seasons is in the air. Fletcher the fox doesn't understand and now he's worried.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful language and art--highly, highly recommended
It's rare that a children's book comes along where both the artwork and the language reach the heights offered up by Fletcher and the Falling Leaves. The story's premise--a young fox attempts to protect his favorite tree from the encroachment of autumn, trying in vain to keep it leaved, literally to the last leaf--could have easily become overly sentimental and cloying.Instead, there is a true sense of sadness and empathy leavened by some wonderfully quirky moments all of which lead to a close that is as satisfying as it is moving. As it is, the story could certainly have stood on its own for plot alone, regardless of language or art.But the artwork is simply sensational, the impressionistic watercolors perfectly matching each page's tone and sentiment, matching the movement of time through day and night, from fall to winter, culminating in perfect pace with the plot in a final illustration of the tree that is simply beautiful. It's a good book for the story, an excellent book for the story plus the art. What makes it a great book, truly a beautiful book, is the language, which never fails to please, to startle, to jostle. The words are sharp and vivid, the rhythm carries you along, and the rhymes and slant rhymes sneak up on you in singular moments of sheer joy in language. The book is a pure clinic in children's picture books as all three elements--plot, art, and language--each alone a superior example, come together to create a whole even greater than its impressive parts.A great book, highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book, beautiful illustrations
This is a beautiful book.Fletcher is a young fox that has noticed the forest is changing as the summer comes to an end.He has a favorite tree. When he sees the way the leaves are changing he thinks that the tree is sick.He does everything he can think of to help the tree keep it's leaves.Of course in the end he can't save the leaves and he goes home very sad with the last leave that was on the tree. The next day he wakes up and goes to his tree and is mesmarized by the sight of the tree. It's beautiful it's covered in icicles and shining in the morning sunlight. He asks the tree if it is okay and the tree in a sense answers him. The wind blows and the tree shakes and the icicles tingle. To Fletcher it sounds like the tree is laughing and he takes this to mean that the tree is alright. The illustrations are wonderful and the last one of the tree with the icicles is fabulous it is done with a type of glitter.Very pretty effect.I very much recommend this book ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Words Are Weapons
This is an excellent book using age appropriate language to send out the message of just how hurtful and harmful words can be.We all know the doggerel bravado verse of sticks and stones is just a crock.I never bought it because words are infinitely more painful than any stick or stone.I think that deceptive verse should be changed to:
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful message
This book does a great job reinforcing how powerful words are.The book sends out a great message in a child centered and creative way.

Editorial Review

Olivia, like many young pigs, experiences life very intensely. She is utterly obsessed with having her mother make her a red soccer shirt (even though the team color is green), until, of course, she discovers that her favorite toy, her very best toy, is missing, at which point she becomes utterly obsessed with finding it. She looks under the rug, the sofa, and the cat. She shouts accusingly at both her younger brother Ian and her baby brother William, who responds with an unsatisfactory "Wooshee gaga." That night (a dark and stormy one), she hears a horrible sound emanating from behind a closed door, and, in a dramatic scene illuminated by her flaming candelabra and showcased in a fold-out spread, she sees the family dog Perry chewing her favorite toy to bits. As devastating as this is to a passionate young pig, "even Olivia couldn't stay mad forever." She sews up her dismembered toy and falls asleep that very night cozied up with both it and the toy-wrecking Perry. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Olivia ...and the Missing Toy
Olivia is the kind of book that is never boring. My children ages six and two absolutely adore this book. Needles to say, that is one of those books you will always remember. We own all of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Magnificent Olivia
The Olivia series of books is simply wonderful.Olivia is a very independent, strong-willed little pig who is not afraid of anything and the result is truly entertaining and very comical. My children love this book the best because it is very well written and with just the right emphasis on certain wording when I read it, they roll on the floor giggling hysterically. My daughter walks around quoting the book out loud as she has most of the book memorized because the children have asked me to read it to them so many times.

4-0 out of 5 stars Olivia back again
In this thrid adventure we find Oliva once again exerting her individuality, demanding a new uniform color...so she can look different from the rest of the team. She then becomes further self-absorbed in a quest for her lost toy. Also in this installment we meet her father, a somewhat dotng pig, Olivia doesn't seem to mind.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good story, unattractive illustrations
I thought the story of Christmas as told by this book was simple enough for my young children to understand without diluting the meaning of the holiday or hitting us over the head with religious sentiment. However, the illustrations in the book are so unappealing that I dread it when my kids bring it to me to read to them. The characters were devoid of any personality and so very, shall we say, white bread.I give it a 5 for the telling of the story and a 1 for the illustrations, evening it out to 3 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book
I love this little book. The story is simple. The story is easy to understand. The illustrations are very good.Unlike another little Christmas book I bought for my 2-year-old, this one actually does tell the story of Christmas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, basic version of the story
I bought this for my daughter, who is 4.I think the text is a little young for her, but it's a clear, simple version of the story. The best part is that it doesn't pile on the religious interpretations. It just tells the basic facts of the story: angel appears to Mary, Mary and Joseph prepare for the baby, donkey ride to Bethlehem, no room in the inn, Jesus born in stable, wise men follow star, angel appears to shepherds, we give gifts on Christmas "to show our love and to say Happy Birthday to Baby Jesus." 5-0 out of 5 stars A Story for the Ages
My two sons absolutely loved this book. They liked the idea of going "where the wild things are" and the book inspired a lot of play in our house. The book nicely balances the child's need for imaginative thinking with a sense of limits, and the pleasures of home. The illustrations clearly make this book great, because they provide a launch pad for this imaginary place. This is one of a handful of books that will bond you with your child for the rest of your lives. Don't miss that opportunity!

5-0 out of 5 stars very sweet - beautiful pictures
This book is kind of a throwback to the old days of comfortable, friendly hospitality between friends. It is perfect for all little girls and an excellent way to introduce the finer points of hospitality back into busy lives. It is also a board book, so it is very sturdy and a nice size for little hands.By 16 month old loves it now but I'm sure she will love it even more as she gets older.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, with one caveat ...
I ordered this book as a birthday gift for my niece, who just turned 4 (and who loves to have frequent "tea parties"). I did not see the book, other than what's shown on this Amazon page, before I had it sent. After it arrived, my sister told me that it was a wonderful and adorable little book, and that my niece was delighted with it. However, there is one thing that I feel I should mention. The book details what goes on during a tea party, and on one page it says "we say a prayer of thanks to God." My sister and brother-in-law are a mixed-faith couple, and for a variety of reasons, they had decided to save issues of faith until my niece is a bit older. Regarding this book, my sister said that, after she reads it to my niece, "I'll probably need to explain God and praying." She didn't make it out to be a big deal -- and I'm sure there are many households in which four year old children have long since been introduced to praying and church. However, I felt I should mention this for those who would like to know. Personally, I rather wish the author hadn't added that part; unlike, say, a family dinner, you'd have to be pretty devout to consider saying grace a part of a preschooler's tea party. And in this day of many faiths and deity beliefs it seems a bit gratuitous and even (unintentionally) insensitive -- even if well-meaning. That's my opinion, of course, and this info is FYI. If a mention of God and prayer doesn't cause any complications, then this is a wonderful little book your little tea-party-giver will love.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun book
My 17 month old just loves this book.He loves lifting the flaps and seeing what animal appears. My only comment is I wished the flaps were made of a stronger, more durable paper.Overall a great book.It was recently listed in Parents magazine as "Our favorite baby books of all time."

5-0 out of 5 stars Learned how to say No!
My son learned how to say no by reading this book. You are looking for Sally's puppy Spot in this book. There are flaps to open and different animals to discover behind each flap. The book takes you through different parts of the house asking "Is Spot in here".You open the flap and say "No".It's so cute!Definitely a good book for your child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Child's Favorite
My 21 month old son loves the story of the Billy Goats Gruff, at first we used to make up the story from what we remembered about it, but now with this book he can follow along and point at the troll hiding under the bridge. It gets may requests. The pictures are great and the story flows quickly enough to keep his interest.I like the ending.Snip Snap Snout, this reviews wrote out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Which 3BBG version?This one--without question, hands down
Here's the one, parents and grandparents.Stephen Carpenter's son Tad had loved this story so much that Carpenter decided to write his own version--and am I glad he did! This is one of my four-year-old's daily requests, and my 13-year-old will still scoop it up for a chuckle from time to time. What makes this particular edition so great?

5-0 out of 5 stars All primary teachers should own a copy!
I've used "Chicken Soup with Rice" to teach the months of the year to my kindergartners for the past two years, and they LOVE it.Each month, I print that month's poem on chart paper, and we listen to the Carole King recording (they clamor for the "Really Rosie" soundtrack) before looking for words we know.By the end of the year even my lowest readers are recognizing words all over the place!Lots of fond first-grade memories of my own with this book as well. Can't recommend it highly enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
Thise people who left poor feedback did not read the listing ahead of time.It states that the book is small right on the first page here on Amazon. This book is fantastic no matter what size.Kids love a book that fits in their hands nicely.Need to share it with a crowd then give them all a copy or write the months poem on a chart.Just had to speak up as this book deserves better feedback by far!

Editorial Review

Seventy-five years ago, that most beloved of "silly old bears,"Winnie-the-Pooh, came down the stairs, "bump, bump, bump," on the back of his head, behind Christopher Robin. And now, after generations of children have grown upon stories about Pooh's adventures with his forest friends, the four all-timechildren's classics from A.A. Milne and Ernest H. Shepard have been collected inone hefty, handsome volume for another multitude of generations to enjoy.Gathered together are the poems and tales that celebrate heffalumps, Eeyore'sbirthday, the unbouncing of Tigger, Disobedience, Buckingham Palace, andsneezles. The stories about Pooh getting stuck in Rabbit's doorway, Piglet doinga "Very Grand Thing," and Eeyore losing a tail (and Pooh finding one) aretimeless favorites for children--and grownups--of all ages. Four originalclassics are here, in all their glory: Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Collection of Classic Stories and Poems
Finding a "Winnie the Pooh" book is easy. It all depends what you are looking for. For the many parents and grandparents hoping to read the wonderful stories to younger people the adventures of Pooh, Christopher Robin, Tigger, Eyeore, Piglet, Kanga, Rabbit, Owl and the rest, this will be more than adequate.
5-0 out of 5 stars I am Pooh!
ever since i can remember, my nick name has always been Pooh...because supposedly i am a bear of very litle brain! plus i'm blond! The reason for the nick name was that it is my favourite book in the world, and i never tire of it! Some may think that the name is vulgar, but once you start to read it, you love it more and more. Without doubt one of the best books ever written, if not the best. If you haven't read it, i advise you do, because it is every bit as magical, as everybody thinks it is.

Editorial Review

When Christopher Robin asks Pooh what he likes doing best in the world, Pooh says, after much thought, "What I like best in the whole world is Me and Piglet going to see You, and You saying 'What about a little something?' and Me saying, 'Well, I shouldn't mind a little something, should you, Piglet,' and it being a hummy sort of day outside, and birds singing."Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Winning Book
The tales are lovable, enjoyable and moving, and perhaps the most important thing is that although written for kids, we adults can reflect on the way we live our daily lives. We live through the pages the feelings of all characters fear, amazement, joy, kindness, self-inflicted misery, competitiveness, good times, and most of all, positiveness and passion to enjoy and nature true friendship. We have these feelings and emotions as human beings. There are Rabbits, and Tiggers and Owls and Piglets all around us and we can barely seem to recognize them in our friends or the people we communicate with every day. Illustrations are gorgeous,an outstanding vision of life.

Who doesn't love Winnie The Pooh? Don't answer that. This is an excellent and charming book to use for bedtime stories for children. I grew up with it and I still love it! It endears the simplicity of life and love...and honey.
