it was a wonderful baby shower gift for my sister.i was remembering all the nursey rhymes I learned as a kid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent version of classic fairy tales
This book is perfect for fans of Mary Engelbreit's artwork - which I am.The fairy tales are not altered from their original wording. The book features multiple fairy tales per page.I'm so happy to have these classic fairy tales enhanced with Mary's beautiful art.

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter adores this book!
We purchased The Night Before Christmas for our 2 year-old daughter last December. She really loves the bright and beautiful illustrations and we are still reading this book almost every night, even though the Christmas season has since passed. That book was our introduction to Mary Engrelbreit. We decided recently to visit the bookstore, and ran across the Mother Goose book. As soon as we opened the book, our daughter decided right away that we should get it. So we did, and we have added this to our selection of books to read daily before bedtime.Since she can't read yet, she will ask for the verses that she wants us to read by looking at the illustrations.Needless to say, this is one of our favorite books, and we can't wait to introduce it to our younger daughter. ... Editorial Review

Seven beloved verses from Old Mother Goose are imbued with a little more"feeling" with this interactive version of the classic. Young children canstroke the white horse's silky mane in "Banbury Cross," feel the dog's smoothred satin suit in "The Cat and the Fiddle," and dig their tiny fingers into thesoft wool of the sheep in "Mary Had a Little Lamb." There's even ascratch-and-sniff spice cake in "Pat-a-Cake"! Tots will love this introductionto the nursery rhymes that will carry them through childhood and beyond.Old-fashioned, Edwardian-style illustrations will please readers of all ages, and the simple two-page-spread format, with poems on the left and pictures onthe right, is clean and attractive. The miniature board book is just the rightsize and sturdiness for small hands and new teeth. (Baby to preschool)Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic for a new generation
This is the book I remember from my childhood, sixty years ago. It was selected by my mother, a children's librarian.
1-0 out of 5 stars These are Some Messed Up Rhymes
I'm shocked to see that these books are still selling today.I had this exact book when I was little, and my mother brought the old copy to me cause she thought my daughter might like to have it.I don't think I'm going to bother giving it to her.I was frightened by this book when I was little.Mother Goose looks more like a wicked witch, stealing a baby, on the cover. There are tons of nursery rhymes, but most of them are very obscure, some only a couple lines long. And maybe I am reading too much into them, but a lot of them seem full of sexual innuendo and possible drug references. One titled "Robin and Richard" seems the most questionable, about two grown men staying in bed until 10 o'clock.I'm not prejudiced at all, but this seems like a very strange rhyme for children to be reading.Everything about this book is disturbing to me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs down
Most of the rhymes in here are so foreign to me. I never heard of most of them and don't even understand what they are about! I had a hard time keeping me interested. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This elaborate pop-up book adds a spectacular twist to Mother Goose's well-loved rhymes. Paper artist Robert Sabuda, preeminent patriarch of modern pop-up engineering, brings yet another explosion of motion and color to his latest masterpiece. Attributing animal personalities to nursery-rhyme characters, he surprises young readers time and again. In "Jack Be Nimble," for example, the fellow leaping lithely over a candlestick is none other than a grasshopper. And the Man in the Moon is seen from a startling perspective: he has decidedly alien features! Sabuda's quirky take on traditional rhymes, combined with his fantastic folding, moving, spinning paper sculptures, will have pop-up fanciers and Mother Goose devotees clamoring for more. Sturdier than most pop-ups, these three-dimensional constructions are nonetheless vulnerable to tiny grabbing hands. At his best, Sabuda creates breathtaking displays of pop-up craftsmanship, as in the "four and twenty blackbirds" bursting rowdily out of a pie, mirrored sunglasses on every one. At his worst, he creates slightly bewildering beings, such as the star-shaped Jill in "Jack and Jill" tumbling down a mysterious edifice. He may occasionally (and understandably--what a fun job!) get carried away with his engineering feats. (Ages 4 to 8) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mother Goose
This is my favorite Mother Goose collection.Wonderfully illustrated.Sylvia is a talented artist.A good choice for a first born.
3-0 out of 5 stars I don't recommend this as your first Mother Goose
No doubt about it, the illustrations are gorgeous. But while portraying all the familiar characters as animals may be a cute and creative twist, it makes it difficult to explain the rhymes to a toddler.Humpty Dumpty is shown as a duckling hatching (in various stages) from an egg.The dish that ran away with the spoon is a turtle with a plate as a shell and next to it is a crane(?) with a spoon as a beak. When I start to read "There was an old woman..." my kid says "No. Rabbit!"In fact, there are no pictures of people at all! This book is really more for those who own a traditional Mother Goose book and want a more artistic edition, or for kids who can understand that that this is a new take on the characters they are already familiar with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most beautiful edition
This is the most beautiful Mother Goose ever written.Children are mesmerized by the artistry, and even adults feel cozy and warm reading the familiar rhymes, and searching for the hidden treasures in Long's depictions.A perfect baby gift, or children's birthday present! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Richard Scarry's bright and humorous animal characters have been charming children for decades. Always inventive in the world of animal fashion, Scarry shows the cow jumping over the moon in pearls and a pink dress, and the little dog who "laughed to see such sport" sports a sailor suit. You won't hear "I can't see the pictures!" with this book; its large size makes it a good choice for group story hour. This collection of 50 Mother Goose rhymes is especially appropriate for toddlers; most of the two-page spreads contain only one illustrated rhyme. (Many children younger than three can focus better on one simple verse than on many rhymes on each page.) Read more

There should be a law that requires every child to sit on Grandpa's knee as he chants "Trot, trot, to Boston; trot, trot, to Lynn." Grownups who still giggle at the thought of Little Jack Horner pulling a plum out of his Christmas pie, or who make a wish on a star, murmuring "Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight" know the secret. They're the ones who will be handing down those same nursery rhymes to their own children, preserving an age-old tradition. But no child should be left behind.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enchants my 2-year-old every day, for 30-45 minutes
My son first latched on to this Mother Goose collection at about 21 months, and for the last 3 months, we've read the whole thing through nearly every day. He'll spend 30 or 45 mintues with me, reading the rhymes, enjoying the songs (there are several for which the tunes are fairly well known), and looking forward to the ones such as "patty cake" which have a game attached to them. While he's got a pretty decent attention span for his age, this is by far the activity he'll do for the longest time. He's starting to learn the rhymes himself now, and it's become a very participatory activity to read it with him.I'm enjoying it tremendously, with the warm and fuzzy, family-celebrating illustrations, the inclusion of many of my childhood favorites, and some old rhymes which are new to me, and very charming (Wibbleton to Wobbleton, for example, and The Big Ship Sails on the Alley, Alley Oh).I've hidden the other Mother Goose collections we were given as gifts, because I find this by far the most appealing, in its choices of rhymes and songs, the charm of its illustrations, and its uncrowded layouts which don't squeeze too much text onto the pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars non-smarmy, non-creepy illustrations
Rosemary Wells's pictures are cute without being smarmy or excessively detailed.I find I don't get sick of the illustrations the way I do with other artists' renditions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the younger ones!

3-0 out of 5 stars Illustrations are not very vivid or saturated.
This is a lovely volume at a very attractive price. However, I was disappointed that the illustrations were not as good as I remember. Perhaps in childhood I had a different edition. The colors look somewhat washed out and, while there are many rhymes, there are not many full page illustrations.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sublime and significant
This is an extremely lavishly illustrated book, with excellent typography, detailed lithograph quality period illustrations, excellent color separation, and wonderful line detail. Many pages of this book are suitable for framing.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Beautiful, Always Classic "Mother Goose"!
I recently purchased this book for my new granddaughter and myself. It is beautifully bound in royal purple cloth with gorgeous endpapers and original front page illustrations by Milo Warner. The illustrations throught the book, however, are Blanche Fisher Wright's and they are just as beautiful as the original 1916 ones.Read more

Ready or not, here she comes! That clever, mischievous, loving matriarch of the nursery knows more verses and ditties than you can shake a stick at.From the familiar "Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater" and "Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush" to the more obscure "I'm Dusty Bill from Vinegar Hill," this lovely, good-humored collection of nursery rhymes is sure to find a place on the shelf of classics. Why did she shorten a number of the poems/ditties? This reads like my radio scanning the first 10 seconds of each station. These poems were written with lots of verses, why not include them?
5-0 out of 5 stars Love it, love it, love it !!!
We bought this book for my son when he was around 15 months old. He would spend hours carrying this book from one person to the next, wanting it to be read over and over. The repetition, the rhyming, and the order of each chapter seemed to just resonate with him.He absolutely loved it and still does.He is almost five years old now and will still take it out of his collection for bedtime reading. It is a little young for his comprehension level now, but he loves to recite the rhymes and finds comfort in its familiarity.I recommend this book wholeheartedly, especially for ages one to three.

3-0 out of 5 stars Buy My Very First Mother Goose instead
Going strictly on my three preschoolers' (ages 5, 3, and 1)preferences, we honestly can't recommend Here Comes Mother Goose. We have spent countless hours reading/singing (and taping and repairing) Opie/Wells' first book, My Very First Mother Goose. But Here Comes M.G. just doesn't resonate with my children in the same way.If you're trying to decide between the two, we whole-heartedly recommend My Very First Mother Goose - a much-loved favorite! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Classic
This is a wonderful version of the classic story of the "Three Little Kittens".The artwork in this book is very colorful and detailed and exactly right for young children. My son (just turned 3) loves this book and must request it (we just got it) 6 times a day.The only other thing that he shows this much enthusiasm for is Thomas the Tank Engine.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very appealing and well done little book
My sons have requested this be read to them about 10 times just today! As all of Galdone's fairy tales or nursery rhymes, this is very true to the traditional telling. The special part here is the living, clever anddetailed pictures. They show such neat details as a kitchen with catnip inevery form---chopped, minced, blended, etc---in a spice cabinet! The cats'expressions are priceless---you wouldn't guess cats could be so expressive.

My 2 1/2 year old loves this book!We have taken it out of the library so many times, I have finally decided it is time to own it!I think she identifies with the sweet kittens who get into trouble but then make amendsand get to eat the pie after all. Both toddlers and preschoolers will lovethis beautifully illustrated book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great First Addition to Mother Goose
My son received this book on his first birthday and has enjoyed it so much! His favorite is "Jack be Nimble, Jack be Quick." He enjoys looking at the pictures by himself and I don't have to worry about him ripping the pages! The illustrations are adorable and they have a vintage quality to them. It is nice that other skin colors are represented as well. I'd highly recommend this version of some Mother Goose.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite book
This is such a beautiful book, it sits on MY bookshelf. I do LOVE to read this with our children, 6, 3, 1, years old. Mother Goose offers something to all age groups. All of the familiar poems and stories are here, as well as a few not-so-familiar entries. The best part of the book, however, is the illustrations. The book is exquisitely illustrated with the look of felt patchwork pictures. We all Really Do Love this Book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Seriously, the little nuts are crazy about this book.
Both my children (2 and 3), and any cousin who happens to be visiting, love this book. It's not short, and it's not small, but they're simply captivated by it. Both started getting interested in the book at about a year old, and continue to choose it from the tons of other books we have. I can't explain exactly why they love it over other Mother Goose books, though I suspect the 3-D look of a stitched picture has somthing to do with it. Everything Barefoot Books does is amazing: someday I'll own all their books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mother Goose Remembers
As both a children's librarian and a mother of three children under the age of five, I've seen LOTS of Mother Goose books. This collection is really special, partly because the sewn illustrations are wonderful. They manage somehow to be both awe-inspiring in their creativity and homey in their style. The simple outlines will appeal to younger children, while the fabric and stitching details will intrigue older children. And of course, the rhymes themselves are must-reads for all kids; here we have a combination of old favorites and less familiar ones. Even if you already have Mother Goose books like the Iona Opie/Rosemary Wells collaborations, or Lucy Cousins' versions, this one is worth buying, especially as a gift for a new parent. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great bedtime reading
This is my son's favoratie bedtime reading. It has great rhymes that he loves with VERY large pictures and VERY large print to help him get used to reading.I would recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, This is the Best Mother Goose Book I've Seen Yet!!
After looking through numerous mother goose books, I decided to go with this one because the rhymes are in large print and the illustrations are big and colorful.Old MacDonald, for example, takes up 2 very large pages. Other mother goose books usually have too much going on- too many small print rhymes and illustrations on each page. You'll probably get Old MacDonald crammed onto 1/4 of a single page, with little or no illustration. You almost need a magnifying lens to see what's going on.I know my son enjoys clear, well-illustrated books- otherwise he'll loose interest. Go to a local bookstore and compare for yourself- that's what I did. I usually never write reviews, but I felt that this book deserved a good one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mother Goose is perfected!I Spy and Gorgeous Illustrations
This version of Mother Goose is just gorgeous.Of course, you must be a fan of folk art to appreciate the illustrations, which are so colorful and lively! This book is 54 pages and includes classic nursery rhymes.Six rhymes are presented (3 per page) on a two page spread and each has a small illustration to accompany it.Then, turn the page and there is a gorgeous two page spread of a complete folk art scene that includes each of the six small illustrations from the previous set of pages. This makes for a delightful 2 in 1 purchase for you and your child, an I Spy nursery rhyme book.It is just lovely and I can't imagine anyone being disappointed in this book.I bought it as a gift for a friend and now I must buy it for my own son, despite the fact that he already has 3 nursery rhyme books! It's that lovely!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond The Fields We Know
With the releases of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1995), Rip Van Winkle (1997), Silent Night (1999), and Johnny Appleseed: The Story of a Legend (2001), folk artist Will Moses has provided abundant evidence that the golden age of children's literature is far from over.Moses' new volume, Mother Goose, a sublime blending of New England and fairy tale motifs, is his finest work since leaving Washington Irving's haunted Hudson River Valley behind. Editorial Review

Deceptively simple, this brightly illustrated anthology reminds us how many familiar Mother Goose rhymes offer lessons in numbers, counting, addition, and even multiplication! From "One-two-three-four-five, Once I caught a fish alive" to those pie-dwelling blackbirds, this book painlessly rehearses counting and numbers concepts. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mother Goose Math
Mother Goose Math is a collection of Mother Goose nursery rhymes that deal with simple math concepts such as counting. Some of the rhymes are familiar ones like one, two, buckle my shoe and sing a song of sixpence. There were several rhymes that I was not familiar with. The book hasbright, colorful illustrations with each rhyme that grab children'sattention. Some of the illustrations have borders around them which makethese illustrations busy. The rhymes run together page after page with noclear ending or beginning. My children who are 3 and 6 enjoyed the book. I think this book might be too young for children over 6.I wouldrecommend reading this book to children ages 2-5. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I was very disappointed in this product. The signs were difficult to understand and the pictures were not great. Also, some of these were not the most common Mother Goose poems and there were only a few anyway.

4-0 out of 5 stars Introduces some basics in a fun way.
While the nursery rhymes "signed" here may not be your most favorite from childhood, they work well for teaching a "hearing" child some basic signs in a fun way.Solomon Grundy gives the days of the week, 30 Days Has September gives the names of the months, Buckle My Shoe gives numbers up to twenty, Crooked Sixpence is fun with lots of repetition to give confidence, and Mother Goose is just for fun (and to tie in with the theme). Most hearing children learning sign language for fun would be insulted to learn the "baby" nursery rhymes, anyway, wouldn't they?

1-0 out of 5 stars Never heard of these nursery rhymes
Solomon Grundy, 30 days has September, The crooked sixpence, Old Mother goose, One two buckle my shoe--I was looking for Mary had a little lamb, etc.I returned the book.(The sign pictures are fine--I was just looking for common nursery rhymes) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wartime Protest included in Mother Goose
I too have a 50+ year old copy, tattered and coverless. It was well loved and read. In my "kiddie lit" class as an undergrad I learned something interesting about the illustrator. He was a Czechcoslavakian refugee from the terror of Nazi Germany. Look carefully at Humpty Dumpty, page 48 - look familiar? Copyright date is 1942. I love his charming, old world illustrations as well as the more original versions of the rhymes that I remember from childhood. Maybe that's because this was the first nursery rhyme book I received!

5-0 out of 5 stars Three generations have loved this book!!
How sad that the Tall Book of Mother Goose is now out of print. Our family has three copies, the first was mine, a tattered copy from about 55 years ago, the second which belonged to my 30ish daughters and the last was purchased 6 years ago for my grandaughter. Each generation has loved this book and the wonderful illustrations. As far as the binding, even the oldest copy is still intact.I firmly believe that every child should experience the wonder of Mother Goose and have yet to find a better version. If I can find out of print copies, you may be sure I will stock up for the next generations.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Tall Book of Mother Goose
I found this book to be full of endearing reminders of my early childhood.I did not find the pages hard to turn as a child, rather I completely wore the poor book out.I loved the illustrations and the many varieties ofnursery rhymes it contained, some of which I've never seen since. It wasan absolutely great childhood nursery rhyme book.I am trying to find acopy to buy now. ... My kids love this book, it is amazing. The art work is incredible, what an imagination he has.It is worth every penny. It is a book for children and adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rhymes & Reasons : An Annotated Collection of Mother Goose R
This was a very well produced book; it is a large book containing beautiful color pictures and a fold out poster. The art is based around a three-paneled painting containing 73 famous and not so famous rhymes. Theyoutright tell you 72 of them and challenge you to guess the last one (therhyme itself, a history of the rhyme, and often a highlight on where tofind the rhyme in the print). Read more
