The Search is Over for a Mother Goose collection for Toddlers
I struggled with nursery rhymes with my toddler.They LOVE rhyming at that age, yet the book of my youth (you know, the checkerboard covered version) was inappropriate.My child would choose a rhyme by the picture, and often I couldn't honor his selection.The problem with classic Mother Goose is that about a third of them are violent or somehow inappropriate, and another third are sold Olde Englishe as to be incomprehensible to a 3-year old American.
This book was a great help for me...
You have to understand that these nursery rhymesare not common in Europe and with my children going to an American school coming home with homework like "learn Humpty Dumpty by Wednesday" I was totally helpless telling my kids that mom doesn't know any of the rhymes which can be really embarassing.

In the long and varied history of Ms. Mother Goose, so many collections and books of nursery rhymes have been made that it's a wonder anyone keeps track anymore. Certainly I was a child when this particular treasury originally came out and until my current grown state I'd never even heard of it. Illustrated by Arnold Lobel (the nice man who introduced the world to "Frog and Toad") this book is nothing if not extensive. It runs the gamut of rhymes, from classics like "Three Blind Mice" to limericks to tongue-twisters. It is a breathtaking achievement.Read more

Delightful book for children and parents alike!
My children (ages 1 and 4) simply adore this book. With its vintage illustrations and linen-like cover it is as beautiful as nursery decor as it is fun to read. I am so disappointed to see that it is out of print! I have given it as a gift at several baby showers, and it always receives such rave reviews. Scour your local bookstores for copies before it's too late! Every family with children should own this wonderful collection.

Childhood Memories
Since I grew up in a large household, my mother and father had to find ways to keep 6 curious and inquisitive children busy.To this day, I still remember spending hours reading books such as Currier and Ives, Mother Goose and other coffee-table books that were always lying around in our house.MA MA Goose is a book that would have received a lot of attention in my house.The wonderful illustrations, large print - easy to follow by young and old - and the impressive number of rhymes makes it a book that will be remembered by a new generation of readers.The red ribbon place keeper is a nice touch!Especially when children are dying to hear the story from the night before.

Special Childhood Book

Great toy for toddlers and older kids too!
When my son opened this toy at his first birthday party my eight year old son flipped out!I couldn't believe how excited he was (how "cool" he thought the blocks were).My toddler of course loved them too and still plays with them now that he's two.Since the older brothers thought it was a great toy, they enjoyed stacking them and knocking them down with their little brother.Even I don't mind stacking and nesting the blocks with my son...over and over and over. I plan on giving this as a baby gift or as a first birthday gift to friends and family in the future!

We give this now for all our baby gifts.It's great developmentally for such a wide range of ages -- babies can put one box inside another, toddlers can begin stacking them, older kids can put the alphabet or numbers in order.And unlike the wooden stacking blocks, it doesn't hurt when they fall down!

An off beat book for off beat children and those who love them
This is a great book. It's a nice mix of the ones we remember as children and a few more we wouldn't readily remember.
A Childhood Favorite Brought Back From the Dead!
In 1973 I was in second grade, and this was my favorite book to check out of the library.The only problem was, it was also a lot of other kids favorite too!I was always on the waiting list for it!!!The illustrations have been in my mind for over 30 years, and several years ago I tried to purchase it, only to find it out of print.I was so excited to find it recently rereleased.I now have my own copy, and am as fascinated by it today, as I was in second grade.The pictures are awesome, and show the true stories at the dark heart of nursery rhymes!!!It's a creepy little safe scare for adults and children alike.A really great book!

Delightfully twisted mother goose

Beautiful illustrations!!
The illustrations in this book are gorgeous! It is so difficult to find children's books with really beautiful pictures, but this is one of the loveliest I have seen. The colorful pictures to the classic Mother Goose rhymes captivate my one year old daughter.The pictures are so colorful and detailed that there is quite a bit for a child to look at.Cute little bunnies, squirrels, cats and other wildlife bring the old rhymes to life. Wonderful Illustration's!
My two year old has loved this board book since she got it!We read it 10 times every day.It is especially cute with the clasp and handle which, by the way, I was worried those would break and fall off from too much abuse. Best Nursery Rhyme Book I've Found
I agree that if you're not going to do the classic nursery rhymes, then skip this one as well.But if you are going to do classic nursery rhymes, this one is it.It's got fewer selections than the classic Mother Goose, but they are well chosen.The colorful and lively illustrations bring the nursery rhymes to life.

Wonderful collections of nursery rhymes
We bought this book when my daughter was 2 months old.She is now almost 2 and has enjoyed this book since we bought it.The bright colors in the illustrations are perfect for infants, toddlers, and children - very eye catching.When reading these to my daughter I do sometimes alter the wording so they aren't as harsh, but I would do that with any collection of nursery rhymes.This nursery rhyme book has all the classic nursery rhymes (Jack and Jill, Humpty Dumpty) but also includes many wonderful additional rhymes that I had never heard. If you have a problem with the material discussed in nursery rhymes, don't get this or any other nursery rhyme book. But, if your children enjoy rhyming verses and colorful illustrations this is a wonderful book.

Gross!
Perhaps many decades ago these horrible and dark nursery rhymes were somehow considered "good".I found this book to be dark, and completely unsuitable for the small innocent minds of children.I will never introduce this book to my child.It talks of death, starvation, abandonment and gruesome acts on animals.Read more

silly silliness
I'm not sure the original had as many verses as this- but the number makes for a good bout of goofiness and lots of fun illustrations.
A neater version of the classic poem
This is one interesting version of the classic poem, "Old Mother Hubbard." One interesting detail for the verse, "But when she came back the poor dog was dead" is that the picture shows that the dog wrote a note saying he couldn't live without a bone. An interesting comment on the picture for the undertaker verse is that the coffin is shown wrapped up like a present. In fact, it looks to me like a gift box of chocolates. James Marshall has extended the classic poem to include his own verses(well, it is an easy poem for which to make up your own verses).
