4-0 out of 5 stars A very short book
Due to the shortness of this book, my daughter prevailed upon me to read it more often. It's very cute though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for little ones!!!
My 8 months old son loves this book and mostly at nightime. He'd rather this one than the other ones. Everytime when I start the song, he gets fascinating. The illustrations are great and catch my son's attention .......He Loves it!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for nightime reading!
My 11 month son loves this book! I read it to him almost every day before puttign him to bed. As I read the book, we imitate the gestures from the illustrations which he loves. I am only giving 4 stars because it's a short book, however I usually read it with a few other books before bed time, to make it up. ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars review written by a 5 year-old
From one to five stars, this book is the best! I loved the adorable mice in "Whose Mouse Are You?" And I was amazed when I found out that a dog could disguise itself just by getting very dirty in "Harry the Dirty Dog." I'd love to give it thirty-zillion stars, for I'm giggling when I see Ferdinand sitting on a bumble bee!I am going to be reading lots more giant books, for this one is great!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book - so much variety and interesting stories!
My son and I love reading the 20th Century Children's Book Treasury. We have read from it every night for the last two months straight, and are still going! It is so much fun to discover new, unique stories. We would have never found many of these stories/books on our own. Some books come from different cultures. I have only heard of 6 or 7 out of 40 plus books included. With 40 plus stories, the Treasury is a great value. The Treasury has the original book's pictures too, but not as many of them.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great for travel, not for everyday reading
This is not the book to buy if you're looking to expose your children to a wide array of children's literature at its best. This is, however, an excellent book to purchase if you're going on an extended trip with a small child and won't be able to bring or acquire a big stack of books while away. Yes, the illustrations are too small. Yes, there are edits. But this book got me through three weeks abroad with two two-year-olds -- enough said. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Tales of Beatrix Potter
This was my first purchase from Amazon and I was very pleased with the professional service and the quick delivery of my order

5-0 out of 5 stars A staple for every home library
How wonderful it has been to get reintroduced to all of Potter's sweet characters. My mom had a small board book collection when I was growing up and I forgot all about these stories. There is just something so warm and relaxing about them.My four year old is loving them (they're a bit too long for my two year old's attention span and she usually wanders away after awhile). However you just can't go wrong with this book--it's a classic and definitely timeless. My only suggestion is that sometimes a "complete" edition is the cheaper route to go, but it does make for a heavy book for little ones to tote around or try to flip through. So if you are looking for something to be a more kid friendly you may want to purchase the individual stories separately.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Tales of Beatrix Potter
The book I received wasn't the same as the one pictured in the listing. It is the same text but it came in a box as opposed to having a dust cover. Other than that I am happy with my purchase. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My son's FAVORITE book!
My 2yr old son and I absolutely LOVE this book! Started reading it to him as an infant and still top choice! The copy I own must be a newer edition as my cover has apple tree and children on it but it's a MUST HAVE! As a parent, I love that it's a fun vivid book with "newer" poetry. I tend to shy away from some "classics" as they really are hard for small children to get into, not too mention have a tendency to be not so... nice. Example: old lady who lived in a shoe with all the children. That doesn't have such a nice ending if you recall. Prelutsky's book has taken over Mother Goose's spot in our library! Hard to get bored reading this to your little ones!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!
I read this book over and over to my three children when they were young. It provided hours of fun and wonderful memories.I give this book to nearly everyone who has a baby.I'm about to order another for my new grand nephew.I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars We love this book!
The rhyme of Five Little Pumpkins is SO easy to read and memorize, the board book holds up very well, and the illustrations are very endearing--the jack-o-lantern faces are expressive and the colors are beautiful. This book made my 20-month-old son a jack-o-lantern fan, and I haven't gotten tired of reading it to him yet!

5-0 out of 5 stars Halloween Board Book Not To Miss!
Dan Yaccarino captures the essence of Halloween with simple, yet expressive pictures of pumpkins, ghosts and a black cat. My one year old son Ryan loves it when i read the story of the Five Little Pumpkins. He points to all the different pumpkin faces and loves their orange glow. The book wipes clean and withstands being dragged all over the house! I am a big fan of Dan Yaccarino's work, love his cartoon Oswald, so this book is a big Halloween fun delight! ... Read more

The product information for this book says "ages 4-8."I would guess that kids that age would enjoy it, but it isdefinitely written for little kids to have read to them by parents, who will love it just as much. It's a board book, so the youngest in your family can chew on it to their heart's content. It's cute. It's funny. It contains puns adults will get without making the kids feel left out.It has a nice rhythm and rhyme. It's just generally a great deal of fun!!!! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Recommended with Caution!
My daughter was also very upset by this book when it was read to her in Kindergarten. My mother was terminally ill at the time and this book (because of its ending) was very hard for her to take. She had nightmares about "the little old lady" for months after hearing this story. While it is a good example of early literary rhythm and ryhme, there are lots of other good ones too, including take offs on this book minus the depressing ending.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent visuals!
I couldn't resist buying this book for my 1 1/2 year old son, even though I new it would be ripped to shreds in the hands of a toddler. Well, it has become shreds, but not out of destruction. He carries this book everywhere and we find him flipping th pages on his own! He LOVES it and so does my husband and I because the visuals are so colorful and stimulating. You can see through the woman's stomach, you can see all of the animals, you can sing the book. It is definitely a family favorite! I'm buying a second copy to save for his elementary years.

    Editorial Review

Seven beloved verses from Old Mother Goose are imbued with a little more"feeling" with this interactive version of the classic. Young children canstroke the white horse's silky mane in "Banbury Cross," feel the dog's smoothred satin suit in "The Cat and the Fiddle," and dig their tiny fingers into thesoft wool of the sheep in "Mary Had a Little Lamb." There's even ascratch-and-sniff spice cake in "Pat-a-Cake"! Tots will love this introductionto the nursery rhymes that will carry them through childhood and beyond.Old-fashioned, Edwardian-style illustrations will please readers of all ages, and the simple two-page-spread format, with poems on the left and pictures onthe right, is clean and attractive. The miniature board book is just the rightsize and sturdiness for small hands and new teeth. (Baby to preschool)Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic for a new generation
This is the book I remember from my childhood, sixty years ago. It was selected by my mother, a children's librarian.
1-0 out of 5 stars These are Some Messed Up Rhymes
I'm shocked to see that these books are still selling today.I had this exact book when I was little, and my mother brought the old copy to me cause she thought my daughter might like to have it.I don't think I'm going to bother giving it to her.I was frightened by this book when I was little.Mother Goose looks more like a wicked witch, stealing a baby, on the cover. There are tons of nursery rhymes, but most of them are very obscure, some only a couple lines long. And maybe I am reading too much into them, but a lot of them seem full of sexual innuendo and possible drug references. One titled "Robin and Richard" seems the most questionable, about two grown men staying in bed until 10 o'clock.I'm not prejudiced at all, but this seems like a very strange rhyme for children to be reading.Everything about this book is disturbing to me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs down
Most of the rhymes in here are so foreign to me. I never heard of most of them and don't even understand what they are about! I had a hard time keeping me interested. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter adores this book!
We purchased The Night Before Christmas for our 2 year-old daughter last December. She really loves the bright and beautiful illustrations and we are still reading this book almost every night, even though the Christmas season has since passed. That book was our introduction to Mary Engrelbreit. We decided recently to visit the bookstore, and ran across the Mother Goose book. As soon as we opened the book, our daughter decided right away that we should get it. So we did, and we have added this to our selection of books to read daily before bedtime.Since she can't read yet, she will ask for the verses that she wants us to read by looking at the illustrations.Needless to say, this is one of our favorite books, and we can't wait to introduce it to our younger daughter. ... This isn't just a written survey of key poems: over ninety poems are also presented on a cd of 52 performances by the poets and close friends, pairing written word with an imaginative spoken survey. Poems covered include Casey at the Bat, Robert Frost's Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, and more: narrators range from Carl Sandburg and James Berry to J.R.R. Tolkien. An exceptional presentation results.

What a deep, deep woman this Maya Angelou is. At least this book ADMITS it's for little kids, unlike a lot of her other work.

5-0 out of 5 stars an art book for parents and children
This book is vibrant in both sight and sound.Basquiat's images fly off the page as do Angelou's words.Despite the brevity of the poetry, it is not a quick read.Time is spent looking at and discussing the artwork, and how it and the poetry interrelate with life.A 1st grader's art appreciation course in practice.Excellent for the living room coffee table.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nourish your child's intellect... cautiously
As an adult and a student, I was truly enchanted by this unique concatenation of Maya Angelou's spirited, optimistic poetry and Jean-Michel Basquiat's bold, explosive paintings."Life" is less a story than an affirmation - the child narrator (whose gender is left to the imagination) lists a dozen or so items that could be causes for concern in young child's mind, but then conquers these fears with "They don't frighten me at all."Equally impressive are the brief, but detailed biographical sketches of both artists that closes the book.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my daughter's favorites
Our 1 year old loves this book, and I love it because of all the loving detail.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not a very exciting book
This book does not follow the traditional "Wheels on the Bus" song. The illustrations are nice and colorful, but the structure of the board book (holes placed for the wheels, windows, etc) are bland and do nothing to promote learning or the concepts portrayed. I do not recommend this book for an interactive reader.

a toddler favorite.sing/modify the "classic" song with the words from this book and you have a sure fire hit.My toddler takes it on car trips (everyone in the car has to sing!) Its fun to read it together and point out the next items that are appearing in the "holes" ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not your Typical Children's Book.....
Such images and stories would, nowadays, NEVER be allowed in children's books...My mother (who was born in Germany) bought this when my brother and I were toddlers, that copy has been lost, but the stories and pictures are STILL with me!This is definitely from an earlier time "spare the rod spoil the child" "children should be seen and not heard" etc.A spoiled VERY finicky child refuses to eat...he gets thinner..and thinner...and finally DIES!!Two boys make fun of a black man, so St. Nick (yes, the same) dips them in a giant INK VAT!A child refuses to stop sucking his thumb...until a man chases him with giant shears and CUTS OFF THE BOYS' THUMBS, showing BLOOD dripping!A boy plays with matches and finally IMMOLATES HIMSELF!DO NOT BUY THIS FOR YOUR YOUNG CHILD (NIGHTMARES GALORE), buy it for YOURSELF ONLY!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious book
It wouldn't be so funny if it wasn't written for children.A must see.

5-0 out of 5 stars They don't make 'em like this anymore!
"Struwwelpeter" was written in 1845 by a German doctor who found contemporary childrens' books to be patronizing and insipid (it is indeed a mercy that he did not live to see "Barney").The book consists of 11 brief stories, written in verse, with accompanying illustrations. And brother, they are anything but patronizing and insipid!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated
Eloise Wilkin has been a favorite since I was a child, we treasured our Little Golden Books and passed some down to our own children, my daughters especially loved the illustrations of the little children . Now I am buying them for my grandchildren, this book is beautifully bound and includes some of her best work. Mrs. Wilkin creates a lovely, serene and happy family atmosphere that children and adults relate to and enjoy. Our grandchildren are the third generation to thrill to these books.

4-0 out of 5 stars a sweet and gentler time
I love this beautiful book filled with images from a simpler, gentler time.I remember Eloise Wilkin stories that I used to look at as a little girl, that used to be my mother's books. So this book is very nostalgic for me.I gave it a 4 since

    Editorial Review

This elaborate pop-up book adds a spectacular twist to Mother Goose's well-loved rhymes. Paper artist Robert Sabuda, preeminent patriarch of modern pop-up engineering, brings yet another explosion of motion and color to his latest masterpiece. Attributing animal personalities to nursery-rhyme characters, he surprises young readers time and again. In "Jack Be Nimble," for example, the fellow leaping lithely over a candlestick is none other than a grasshopper. And the Man in the Moon is seen from a startling perspective: he has decidedly alien features! Sabuda's quirky take on traditional rhymes, combined with his fantastic folding, moving, spinning paper sculptures, will have pop-up fanciers and Mother Goose devotees clamoring for more. Sturdier than most pop-ups, these three-dimensional constructions are nonetheless vulnerable to tiny grabbing hands. At his best, Sabuda creates breathtaking displays of pop-up craftsmanship, as in the "four and twenty blackbirds" bursting rowdily out of a pie, mirrored sunglasses on every one. At his worst, he creates slightly bewildering beings, such as the star-shaped Jill in "Jack and Jill" tumbling down a mysterious edifice. He may occasionally (and understandably--what a fun job!) get carried away with his engineering feats. (Ages 4 to 8) Read more

Each book I buy keeps getting better and better!I began collecting Robert Sabuda's Pop-Up Books with the Wizard of Oz and each year I purchase one or two as a Christmas gift to myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mother Goose
This is my favorite Mother Goose collection.Wonderfully illustrated.Sylvia is a talented artist.A good choice for a first born.
3-0 out of 5 stars I don't recommend this as your first Mother Goose
No doubt about it, the illustrations are gorgeous. But while portraying all the familiar characters as animals may be a cute and creative twist, it makes it difficult to explain the rhymes to a toddler.Humpty Dumpty is shown as a duckling hatching (in various stages) from an egg.The dish that ran away with the spoon is a turtle with a plate as a shell and next to it is a crane(?) with a spoon as a beak. When I start to read "There was an old woman..." my kid says "No. Rabbit!"In fact, there are no pictures of people at all! This book is really more for those who own a traditional Mother Goose book and want a more artistic edition, or for kids who can understand that that this is a new take on the characters they are already familiar with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most beautiful edition
This is the most beautiful Mother Goose ever written.Children are mesmerized by the artistry, and even adults feel cozy and warm reading the familiar rhymes, and searching for the hidden treasures in Long's depictions.A perfect baby gift, or children's birthday present! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Look out it's a "big book."
It doesn't say anywhere that I can see in the description that this is a big book suited for primary grade teachers yet not easy to hold baby on your lap and read.I had no idea when I put it on my wish list. What a surprise! It's a great story with illustrations that provide many teachable opportunities: number recognition, counting cause and effect, telling time, feelings, and more.
