5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for new arrivals
I purchased this book for a new Mexican friend, who recently moved to the U.S. for two years and speaks practically no English, while I know a smattering of Spanish. We've found it to be invaluable in helping us communicate. When it's obvious that she isn't understanding me, I can turn to the appropriate page--the kitchen, for example--and point to the picture, and she can do the same. Then we work on her pronunciation of the English word. I will probably purchase another one for myself to help me strengthen my Spanish skills. I would also consider the other language titles to correspond with those my sons are studying in school. The format is user-friendly, the color illustrations are happy, and the categories of words are vast and extremely practical--especially helpful to someone struggling to get by in a new country. My friend showed the book to her ESL teacher and was very proud when the instructor recommended the book to the rest of the class!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great picture dictionary
What makes this dictionary so great is that it is not in alphabetical order and it is based on themes. For example, there is a classroom theme on a page and all of the words that have to do with what is in a classroom. Also, I like the fact that their are numbers next to the object and then all of the words in Spanish and English are at the bottom half of the page. This allows you to cover up all of the words and quiz yourself.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best ever...you can find it here!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book with a Great Price that Will Teach You Spanish
I started learning Spanish eight months ago without any previous experience learning the language. I just used 3 tools that got 4 or 5 stars reviews at a popular learning Spanish product review site. This book is one of the tools. The other was the Learning Spanish Like Crazy self-study course. And the third was a reference book for verb conjugation (501 Spanish Verbs).

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing edition
One has to wonder if the other reviewers either didn't actually use this book or if they work for Barron's because this book is a very sloppy effort and should be an embarrassment to Barron's, especially the chief editor, Nathan Quinones. To begin with, anyone using previous editions of this book will notice that almost all of the errors remain in the book. Misspelling, misplaced accents, they're all still exactly where they were in previous editions of this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars great format -- tons of typos
I have been using this book and find the format helpful. However, I have come across numerous errors/typos, which can be confusing for a beginning language student.Additionally, the CDs included with the book do not match the lessons. It is almost as if the CDs were made for an earlier edition and never updated.

5-0 out of 5 stars We love this book!
My daughter is only 20 months old now, but we began reading this book to her at about 14 months. She has learned the names of fruits in spanish and how to count to 5 within a couple of weeks of beginning to read it.It is one of her favorite books along with "Oso pardo, Oso pardo...".This is one of the required books for a spanish class that she will be beginning when she turns 2.As a spanish speaker it is a really easy book for me to read with fun pictures that my daughter enjoys. Even now she loves to put her fingers in the holes to count the fruit. For parents/caregivers who are not quite as experienced in reading spanish, it may be a little difficult to pronounce some of the words, but with some help you should be able to read the words effortlessly after a few times. My parents and in-laws don't speak much english and they love reading these spanish books to their granddaughter. It's a great way for them to bond.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spanish version of a classic!
This Spanish version of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" is just as cute as the English version.Children will love the pages of varying sizes with holes where the caterpillar has eaten up the food.

In case you aren't familiar with this book, it is about a caterpillar who eats and eats and eats. The board book version has holes in the pages so the reader can see what he has eaten. It is so cute! The illustrations are adorable and the kids love it!We are a bilingual family so my boys have the Spansih version. It's super and very durable! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great learning Tool
As a Spanish 2 and 3 teacher I highly reccomend this book. I use it as a reference myself because it has great explanations and the order of the grammar structures is useful. I would reccomend getting an answer key along with the book. This is a great book to refresh your memory on grammatical structures.
5-0 out of 5 stars Un Repaso Perfecto
Repaso was used as my school textbook for higher level Spanish courses in high school.Everything is great about it.The instructions are in English which makes it even more compatable. The book is able to review old concepts, but has enough to teach the little proper things about Spanish. It is a great purchase for any student that is just learning Spanish or has been taking it for many years and needs a reference.

3-0 out of 5 stars No Answers Given Here
Although I agree that this book is certainly a bargain when compared to the standard textbook options that often cost 3-4 times as much, I was disappointed to find that no solutions to the exercises are provided. One must purchase ANOTHER book before the exercises in this book can really be said to be useful. I am a firm believer in immediate correction when it comes to language review and acquisition--spending time on exercises without knowing which you did wrong will only reinforce what are your misunderstandings of grammar. However, if you are willing (and able) to buy the solutions manual along with this book, then it will make a good review--though it won't be the bargain that it at first appeared. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book! It's amazing!
I love this book. I have read this book in three different languages (german, english and french). It's a completley heartwarming story and not only for kids! This book has a lot of great quotes like:
5-0 out of 5 stars Innocent and true- he came from a star
_This is the sort of tale that a person writes when he steps back and takes an objective look at civilization. This was the point of view of the author, stranded as he was in the Sahara with a broken aeroplane and on the edge of life and death. It was there and then that he met the only person in his life that he was ever really able to talk to- the apparition of the Little Prince.

1-0 out of 5 stars Spanish Text Book
The odering process was easy and came in a timely fashion.I am very satisfied

1-0 out of 5 stars Choose another Spanish book, if you can.
As a Spanish teacher and native speaker I wouldn't recommend this book to my worst student. I had the "pleasure" to teach this book for 3 years (formerly named "Bienvenidos", "A bordo" and "Buen Viaje")and I didn't like it the least. The publishers came up with a new format this year but although it looks more attractive you can still find many of the SAME old activities and many of the old pictures. The vocabulary section at the end of each chapter don't have the English translation what makes it quite difficult for the student when reviewing vocabulary. They have improved the culture sections, though; but still it is not good enough. If you learn Spanish using this book, please THANK your teacher, he/she has a lot of work to do when using this book. Buena suerte!

4-0 out of 5 stars Two Teachers
This book has good info. Not only Spanish words, but a LOT of cultural history, maps, photos, etc. They have really good, clear, explanations. I used this book for my Spanish class. But, the book alone won't get you to speak fluent Spanish. Of course, my teacher played a HUGE role in teaching me, but theis book is great. Who knows, maybe if we finished the whole book, I'd be fluent, but it IS worth it. Trust me. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book for starting your kids on Spanish
The best way to teach your children Spanish is to speak it to them. And if you don't speak Spanish? Most Spanish books for kids teach individual words, which doesn't get you very far.I have yet to find a book or cd for preschool/elementary children that teaches anything beyond animals, numbers, greetings, colors, days of the week...Adult programs are similarly useless when teaching children. How often do you ask your child, "The plane to Puerto Vallarta leaves at 3pm".
5-0 out of 5 stars Play and Learn is the single best resource I have purchased
This book and CD has changed the way I think about teaching the Spanish language at home. The language presentation allows you to enter the child's world in the Spanish language in a simple yet meaningful way. By using a natural context within themes that are important and real to the child, the language comes alive. This is not the traditional drill or list method of teaching (which I have found does not work with young children), but rather a way to allow children to acquire the language in a natural way.
4-0 out of 5 stars A gentle introduction
As a non-Spanish speaker (French is my second language), I was looking for a gentle way to introduce Spanish to my 6yo daughter. In many ways, Play and Learn Spanish works for this.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Book Ever
I am a French teacher and I can say that this is the worst book ever designed for learning French. After the first four chapters, all that students still really know how to say is "j'aime" and "je n'aime pas". It tries to be communicative and teach students catch-phrases so that they can speak in detail, but the problem is that all they know how to say are those phrases. They don't understand how the language works. The grammar explanations in this book are laughable. It doesn't provide nearly enough practice. Plus, it introduces things in the exercises that they've never ever had before! Why throw 'le futur proche' into a grammar exercise when the student has never been exposed to it and can not guess the meaning from context because it is simply a grammar exercise? I just don't understand this book!

I first used this book when I started taking French 1 in Middle School. It is a great book!It takes every aspect of learning French, peice by piece. There are 12 chapters, each wich zeros in on one topic. They have things such as Comment dit-on... 2-0 out of 5 stars Too easy
This past school year I took Spanish I with this textbook.I was never so unchallenged and unmotivated in my life.I gave this book 2 stars for vocabulary building, but don't count on it for anything else.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible. Just horrible.
I have no clue why my high school depends so much on these books. I show these textbooks to my family members (who happen to be from Costa Rica, Venezuela, and Spain) and we all just laughed at the sheer lunacy of these textbooks. We'd learn more Spanish in "America: The Book" than from the Holt books. The translations, dialogue, reviews, and examples were all trivial and laughably disorganized. How do they expect students to learn Spanish when 60% of the text is in English? There are much more efficient and easier ways to learn Spanish, the easiest language on Earth, than from an arbitrary slop of Holt publishing. I recommend Rosetta Stone, instead.

2-0 out of 5 stars A decent Spanish textbook for average-slow paced learners.
In my school they used this book for Spanish I.I found that although it was adequate, it went at a pretty slow pace.Throughout the entire book, as far as verbs go, it only teaches the present active verb conjugations, the simple concept of being going to do something, and at the very end, the present progressive, which translates to I am running (etc.).

5-0 out of 5 stars The ABSOLUTE best book for beginners
As a college student majoring in Japanese Language and Literature and going to continue on to a master's degree, I have come across many books claiming to teach a person the Japanese language. This book series, however, does the best to provide grammatical explanation and basic grammar. If you are trying to learn Japanese on your own, I would recommend this book to start with. Not only will it be useful in terms of making your way through Japan, but it is interesting and does more than teach the language. It also provides culture notes which are important since language is more than grammatical structure and words, its context.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners in Japanese!
This is an excellent textbook for those beginning to learn Japanese.Everything is very clear and easy to understand. This volume teaches you both Hiragana and Katakana as well as a few basic Kanji.I recommend this textbook to anyone interested in learning Japanese.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference!
As a new Japanese student, I found this book to be extremely helpful.Notonly are the hiragana and katakana alphabets included and explained, butthere is also a lot of cultural information that I found very interesting. This book is very easy to understand and is even good for some basicteach-yourself Japanese, which is what I'm doing. In the first half of thebook, all the words are spelled out in Romanji, so it makes it so mucheasier for beginners to learn how to read and pronounce Japanese words. You will not be dissapointed! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!
My kids love this book.Only drawback is the lack of pronunciation guide, it's been a while for me...Maybe it's in the teacher's guide, which I don't have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Middle school Latin
I am developing a 5th and 6th grade Latin program at my middle school, and I have been delighted with the Minimus books. The kids really seem to like them, and I appreciate the bright colors and easy to follow story line.I am supplementing with more of a traditional paradigm approach to learning the grammar, but the books provide a great launching point for discussion and reading that is much more fun than just sitting around memorizing verb endings. Some of the material is very British, so I have to explain some of the references to my kids, but other than that it is a wonderful curriculum.

5-0 out of 5 stars Latin for fun
This is a very sound method to teach Latin to the younger crowd.Would be perfect for homeschooling families! The story, based on archaelogical digs in Vindolanda, near Hadrian's wall in Britain, is entertaining and very engaging, and the skills build up painlessly.Highly recommended!I use it with 5th graders, who are known to read stories ahead of the class! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Close Your Eyes And Think Of England
May I say this book holds a special place in my heart as it was the text of the absolute last math class I ever had to take in my life? Even if it was just a cop-out repeat of the easy algebra I had in 6th grade, it was still math and therefore the stuff of sterile numbers, my oldest foe in the scholastic world. Anyway, though, this isn't bad as far as algebra books go. Explains things well and keeps its Satanically evil subject mostly down to levels anybody suffering through the required college math credits can deal with. Could have been worse.

    3-0 out of 5 stars Mike's review
I read this book and it really explains all that math geek content well but it is a littlt crowded with exersizes and it stops a little short of being advanced. It'll get you into geometry and trig. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Same Book Used by our School District
This is the same book used by our public school district. We are in one of the leading districts in the nation. The only negative I have is the price.I found it new at Walmart>Books>Textbooks for a lower price.Even they are higher than the publisher's price.Buy it here if you have confidence in your seller.I won't!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast and easy, a great way to learn!
En Espanol is a great way to learn spanish. Its chapters are set up in an easy, logical order. There are lots of review exercises and the set-up is appealing. Not only do you learn basic vocab, there are sections on cultureand history. The pages are bright and are geared toward middle/high schoolaged kids. At the end of every chapter there is a vocab list compiling allthe new words from the chapter. It also contains a Spanish/English,English/Spanish dictionary in the back for easy reference.En Espanolmakes learning spanish fun and easy. ...
