A suprising twist!
When the reader starts Chapter 1, they think this is going to be another, long, dull pirate ship with lame "adventures." (Trust me, that is what I thought)
Absolutely Delightful!!
I first heard about this book when my son was in 3rd grade back in 1994 and the teacher was reading it aloud to the class. I then, this year (2006) remembered it and took it out of the library. I was mesmerized by the story (even as an adult) because I am a sailor! I could just imagine Charlotte donning her sailor's garb and climbing the rigging!I love how she started out prim and proper, then she became Captain of the ship! I too am a Captain, and this story (although fiction) is a great role model for young girls today. I especially loved the ending where she leaves her stuffy life behind, arrives at the dock and the boat "sails with the morning tide". I imagined the boat pulling out of port at first light and watching the sun rise over the horizon.The writing is so vivid, and the story is so alive, that I could almost smell the salt air!I loved the book!

Great book for pirate lovers - parents of easily frightened young ones should take caution
I bought this for my 4 year old son who LOVES pirates right now after viewing the first "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie and seeing the "Tall Ships" on the Great Lakes.I was afraid he would be scared by the pirates turning into skeletons, etc. but he was not - in fact he wanted to watch it again and again.So when I saw this book I knew he'd love it, and he does.Every night before bed he takes out all the separate letters and cards, has me read them, then puts them back in their envelopes.He also has me read all the different types of ships over and over again - he can now name some ship types by memory.This book is very well laid out - even I find the information very interesting and learned things I did not know.
Fantastic Fun
My young son and I were both thrilled with this interesting book.All the extras fascinated my son as I hoped they would.

A Useful Resource and Just Plain Fun
This is an attractively put together book on the history and details of pirate life. I have been searching for a resource on the subject that presents information on pirates in such a way as to not seem tedious and boring, but instead inspiring and fun (which, as we all know--pirates are fun!). With all the interest sparked on the pillaging bands of men, and sometimes women, with recent films this volume is a must have for anyone with an interest in pirates. Of course, it would obviously appeal to children and is definitely appropriate for that tender age group, but adults can also find much to appreciate.

I like inventions a lot.
I am 7 years old.I wasn't very interested about the men in the book.But I was very interested about the inventions and the flying bicycle.And I hope 4 stars is good for me and you.

Great magic
This is the first Magic Tree House book I have experienced.I really enjoyed the book and think the author done an awesome job of incorporated history (through investions and scientific discoveries).The trips the two characters (Jack and Annie) take are not only an adventure but also educational.I would like to go back and read the books that came before.

Another great from Mary Pope Osborne!
My son loves this whole series.If you have not started your child on these for age 5 and up, do so!These are the most interesting books for young kids.And so far the series has seem to grow up with my son.This book lists the scientists such as Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell and others. These books really start a child learning about history.My son is so much into this history of these, it has led him to research on his own through other books about the historical events! We have also read the accompanying research books.The only thing I wish for now, is some children travel guides from Mrs. Osborne (it would be a great add on to the research books!). Not Under 13, But Whatever This is a great read
This book only received four stars because on its own it's not spectacular, but as an extension of the Bloody Jack series it does hold its own. This book is a good follow-up to the other Bloody Jack books.It's not the most rollicking tale of the bunch, but gives readers a more subtle adventure.Although I found the the main body of the book a tad tedious, I still enjoyed it as a whole.Jacky's colorful cahracter carries the story along when it starts to drag, as do the personalities of the other girls.One of my favorite parts of the book is when Jacky tells stories of her life on the streets in London.It gives you a better glimpse at her past and how far she has come from the little beggar of her childhood.I will warn you though, the ending is a killer cliff-hanger.

Once again, Jacky Faber kicks pirate booty...
I am a huge fan of the Jacky Faber series -- just like everyone else who has discovered these awesome books by L.A. Meyer. I've read every one of Meyer's previous books, and loved all of them. Each time, I figured there was absolutely no way he could top the previous one. And each time, I'm stunned to find that he has. 'In the Belly of the Bloodhound' is no different. Once again, Meyer has written a heck of a story that's even better than his last. Like all the others, 'In the Belly of the Bloodhound' was an incredibly fast read -- a book that I could not put down. It's entertaining and definitely won't put you to sleep like some other 'teen' books assigned in school. I have no doubt that this book is headed for a blockbuster movie, once Hollywood discovers Jacky Faber. I'm sure actresses will be lining up to play her. In the meantime, I'm hoping L.A. Meyer is back home writing his next pirate tale. Aye, Cap'n, he's good as gold.

Loving this series.....
I wasn't going to get this title for my nine year old.I thought she was too young.But she REALLY wanted it, telling me, "Mom, I've had tons of crushes already!"I bought it and read it first.While I still think she's a little young for some of the information (especially the "going together" section toward the end), a lot of it was very age appropriate.Rather than just give it to her, we are reading it together.(Thankfully I have a very open and trusting daughter who doesn't get embarrassed by "growing up" issues.)I explained to her that reading about these things does not give her permission to do them.

Ummm to the lady who said not to buy this I have a question for you; why do u care how its worded? This is a book for girls to be comfortable with, not something from a psychology book! consider that! and your knitpicking! U must have no life to complain about wording. Anyway the book is awesome! It helped my daughter become comfortable enough to talk to me about her crushes! She is totally ready!~

Don't Give This to Your Kids
This is a poorly worded and confusing book. This is a good way to get them to be shallow, dumb them down, get them into hellish relationships, and send them running to therapists who themselves need therapy. Giving this to them as a gift is also a good way to insult their intelligence.

A Modern Classic
Ernst Gombrich was an amazing man.His excellent book "The Story of Art" is recognized as the standard work in Art History, and he made many other contributions to the field as well as to society in general.His "A Little History of the World" was his first book, the only one he wrote in German, written just as he was finishing his studies at the University of Vienna in 1936.He wrote the book very quickly and it was a success until the Nazi's banned it for being too pacifistic.By that time Gombrich was already living in England, where he remained for the rest of his life until he passed away in 2001.
Raves from History Teacher and Bibliophile
I actually bought the audio version and listened to it on a two-day drive.I was riveted to my book.The miles just slipped past me as the beautiful simplicity of Gombrich's writing took me on a glorious tour of our world.For the first time in my life, World History was One Story, not a series of many stories.

'A Little History of the World' is exactly what the title indicates. Gombrich takes the reader from the dawn of time to the mid-twentieth century. Gombrich covers cave men, great religious leaders, philosophers, and events over an incredible timeline.

boring, plotles, dull
I, Like many other unfortunate youth, had to read this book for school and do journal responses for each chapter. I did the assingnment with little difficulty without finishing the book. It was that predictable! I only read the first two chapters before I could do the responses with little trouble.
My brother sam is dead
Over the summer I read My brother sa is dead by James luneden Collier and Christopher Coliier. As one of my favorite books, there was many things i liked about I found interesting. When reading this book, you forget about reality and you start to feel as if you were in the story yourself.
Great Book to Spark an Early Interest in History
James Lincoln and Christopher Collier's story "my brother Sam is dead" begins at the dawn of the Revolution, a time when Loyalists felt much the same as Mr. Beach's remark to Sam in Chapter 1: "I think men of common sense will prevail. Nobody wants a rebellion except fools and hotheads." Doubtful or unaware of just how focused and set on independence from the Crown of England the Rebel militia actually were, the loyalists or tories of Colonial America were caught off guard when they realized "Live Free or Die" was more than a motto is was a commitment.

A Must Read for American History!
I can't wait to see the movie. Somebody gave me this book as a gift. I read it with curiousity but I was not excited about it so much because it didn't interest me at first but once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. The author is the son of the one of the flag raisers at Iwo Jima. He was on today's Imus radio show talking about how many rejections that this book received before it got published. No interest in World War II, I doubt it. It became a best seller because it's one of the most fascinating books out there on our shelves. I gave my copy to my school for it's library. Now that it is being made into a movie by American icon Clint Eastwood, I think we can say that those publishers didn't know what they were doing in the first place when they rejected Bradley's heartbreaking and beautifully written book about his father's experience. He doesn't forget the many others who were involved in the flag-raising. He writes about each of them as if he was their son too.

All Time Favorite
The Secret Garden, along with A Little Princess, also by Frances Hodgson Burnett, is one of my favorite books from childhood. I still enjoy reading this book as an adult and reliving the fairy tale of two young children who "bloom" and grow, along with the garden. The metaphor is simple, but the charm and beauty of this tale make it a classic. I can't wait until my two daughters are old enough to enjoy it. Highly recommended.

The Secret Garden
When the little, frail, ugly looking girl from India came to the manor she looked so sad.I watched her at first from a distance, as she was so cold to everyone she came into contact with.I heard one of the gardeners say that her parents had died and she now had to live here, in the Misselthwaite Manor.The Manor has miles of nothing but moor.I think it is heaven with nothing but open land to fly through.It is beautiful, but not all see it like this, especially little miss Mary.

Silly book great for kids.

A fun book
I am a mother of two boys ages 3 and 4. We like this book. It has cute pictures and the rhyming is fun. It is a book full of questions and then answers the questions in ryhme. Silly and fun.

A favorite in our house!
This and "Once Upon a Potty" are my son's (age 2) favorites. It's a great potty book, and personally, I think it's a plus that it's unclear whether the child in the story is a boy or a girl - that just means either gender will easily be able to relate. As for whether it encourages toddlers to use the potty, I think it does. Whenever we read this, my son shouts "Diapers off!" and flies to the potty chair. One thing that's a real positive about this is that it's a bit long. That's been a help keeping my son sitting on the potty longer without being distracted by a toy or a noise or whatever. I'd highly recommend A Potty for Me for anyone looking to start or add to their potty training toolbox.

a great potty book!
My son (2 years) has loved this book for months.In fact, our family has memorized it now, we have read it so many times.I like how it written on a child's level and emphasized that the most important part of the whole potty learning process is that the child feel good about his/her accomplishments!

It's all in how you know your child will respond...
I have a little boy who will be 3 very soon.He is now at the stage where he tells me when to change poopy diapers, so I know that he is now entering the potty training stage.When looking for a book on encouraging the "potty" concept, I was so delighted to find a Karen Katz book.My child has two Katz books previous to this and loves the illustrations and easy language.Previous books were very instrumental in his grasp of sharing and not hitting.So it led me to purchase this book on potty training.So far, my son has LOVED the book and requests for me to read it over and over.He also is applying the concepts in the book to our visits to the big potty.

Who cares if it's silly?
My boys (7 and 5), my wife and I think this book is total gas.Plus, we do something unique when we read to our kids: We TALK about the books!"J,P,G & B" has opened up lots of great conversations about real history with our sons.They "get" that Paul Revere didn't sell underwear, but played a pivotal role in our nation's beginnings.And they understand that Ben, George, John and Tom are bona fide American VIPs. (And I'd say it's a safe bet that at least Ben knew how to laugh at himself.)Lighten up, folks -- life's too short to miss out on good, clean giggles!

A Wonderful Book
Lane Smith has done it again.In the classic form as the Happy Hockey Family and the Stinky Cheese Man, John, Paul, George & Ben is a classic Lane Smith take on some of our country's founding fathers.As always, the animations are what makes this books so special.My six year old loves reading the story and my 3 1/2 year old loves the pictures -- a wonderful book!

I bought it for my kids, but I love it as much as they do!!
I saw Lane Smith on a morning news show (CBS-I think) on the 4th of July, and he read an excerpt from this book.I immediately rushed out to buy it for my kids.My daughter, 6, liked the underwear part. My son, 9,(a "president/history nerd") liked it, but was quick to point out the "mistakes" in the book.He (as well as I) was glad to see the section in the back that "sets the record straight."I love intelligent humor, and was glad to see this book offering that, as well as being interesting to kids.In a world where some children (and some adults) have no interest in anything that isn't on TV or the internet, this book is a funny, smart, way to introduce children to the story of our country's founding fathers. ... Great Book That Little Girls Love
I have had this book for over a year and my girls just love it.We read it every single night and they have it memorized.I have never had a problem potty training and this book makes it fun.I have 5 children and each one will potty train when ready.I will continue to read this book even to the baby.

Enthusiastic about it!
This was the best book I found to help get my daughter interested in the potty. She loved the rhyming patterns, and I loved that the book showed "Hannah" making mistakes but not giving up.It was very positive and helpful in portraying a little girl wanting to get out of diapers without criticizing. I loved this book!

Very cute story
I bought the boy version of this book for my son when he was potty training.I read it so many times that I had to buy the girl version for my daughter.It's a cute story and I like the rhythm.I'm just now introducing my daughter to the idea of potty training.She's still a little young to fully understand it, but she does like reading this book.

My kid's love "Little House" books
I have 5 childern and do not get to read aloud the quanity of books I would like to, so we invest in audio.They can be enjoyed time and time again.My kids play the "Laura" books we own over and over. Great for long car trips or when layed up with illness too.

The story conitnues...
Little House On The Prairie is a longer read than Little House In The Big Woods and deals more with action and adventture.While the first book seemed to be a guide book on survival in the wild this book is more of a tale with Indians, bush fires and other dangers.Living on the prairie is not the same as living in the big woods, so we do learn some new things about prioneer life and the problems the family faced.In same ways the second book is superior to the first.

After the Civil War, the Wilder family has decided to make a big move - join the migration to the frontier, from the little cabin in the woods of Wisconsin. The main character and author, Laura, tells about the difficulties and advantages of life on the praire. Even though the journey there is difficult, and, at time, tragic, the family is able to pull through, and arive in the praire of Kansas to make their new life and create their new adventures.

An invitation to history.
Joy Hakim is a master storyteller. Her series of books are enjoyable to children and adults. Her presentation style makes history understandable, even if you never seemed to "get it" as a student. History teachers -- PLEASE TAKE A LESSON HERE!! Definitely worth the price.
