5-0 out of 5 stars Riveting Story of Diversity
This is a companion book to the documentary about the Paper Clip project started at Whitwell Middle School outside of Chattanooga, Tennessee, in the late 1990s.What began as a class to teach diversity to a mostly white southern group of schoolchildren evolved into a project of collecting 6 million paper clips (the clips are historically tied to the Holocaust) to represent the Jews who perished during that dark period. This book is a wonderful story that shows what can be accomplished when children are determined and how a relatively small idea can grow into something significant that can affect millions of people. This one is highly recommended for children of all ages.

I happened upon a review and ordered the book. When it arrived, I read it with a lump in my throat and my eyes tearing up.My 72 year old mother and I were driving to another town when I started telling her about it.I couldn't get that damn lump out of my throat and pretty soon my voice started quivering and I started crying. She just reached over and held my hand as I got my composure back.I was done, though, I told her she had to read it.She did. Afterward, she took it to one of her clubs and shared it.It's just a 10 minute read, but it sure provides plenty of emotion. I am so glad I happened upon it. A glorious story. Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars The power of a symbol.
Those of us who are horrified by the murderous actions of the Nazis during the Holocaust pray that such a terrible event will never happen again. It is heartening to know that there are a number of middle school children in Whitwell, Tennessee who did their share to raise the consciousness of people from all over the world.Whitwell, a small town of white Anglo-Saxon Protestants with a population of only 1,600, is now internationally famous for its "Paper Clip Project."

5-0 out of 5 stars READ THIS
This book proves that M.T. Anderson is one of the most brilliant writers of our time, hands down. Read this book and know it; read this book and pass it on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't miss it
Read this book and give it to everyone you know or love, whether 15 or 55. It's a stunning, extraordinary look at our own history through the eyes (usually) of Octavian Nothing, an African child slave who is, in this first of two books, the subject of experiments by a group of Boston rationalist philosophers. The purpose of the experiments? For the "philosophers" to learn whether Africans have the same capacity to learn as white children do. Because the Revolutionary War is about to break out, the characters' lives change in unpredictable ways.Every single page of this book, which is told in highly-readable and startlingly rich eighteenth-century language, is filled with brilliance and pain, and there are few characters in contemporary fiction that Icare about as much as I care about Octavian. You will, too. Furthermore, there are parallels, resonances, echoes, and consequences for all of us today---your brain will be unusually active as you read, and you won't be able to put the book down or stop thinking about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A War Story Chills You to the Bone
Fallen Angels, by Walter Dean Myers, is a deep, exhilarating war story about Richard Perry, a young recruit along with his fellow soldiers as they endure the horrors of war in Vietnam. I recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of war stories. This book is action packed, has a colorful cast of characters, and displays the horrors of war vividly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fallen Angels
The book Fallen Angles by Walter Dean Myers is a great book. Walter Dean Myers is one of my favorite authors. I have never been disapointed by any of his books. This one was about a young man drafted into the army. He was sent to active duty in Vietnam. It was all an errorthathe ended up in active duty he had a bad knee. The story brought you with the main character Richie Perry to the Vietnam war. Walter Dean Myers had you understand the fears and the feelings of the men in Perrys group. You met his new friends, sargents, and nurses. The book makes you feel like you areright there with them. You don't want to put the book down you were given more information about the Vietnam war. Its not as much the detail of the location and what was happening but more about the thoughts of the troops. You got the view from the people that were actually there in the trenches. They where trying to survive. There where men dying, they were friends there where feeling of loosing your friend to the war. Every one wanted to get out alive and well and start a new life. I recomend this book to anyone who likes war stories. This book will not only give you the war story, but the view from those who served. Not just the facts but the feelings.

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!
My kids love this book.Only drawback is the lack of pronunciation guide, it's been a while for me...Maybe it's in the teacher's guide, which I don't have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Middle school Latin
I am developing a 5th and 6th grade Latin program at my middle school, and I have been delighted with the Minimus books. The kids really seem to like them, and I appreciate the bright colors and easy to follow story line.I am supplementing with more of a traditional paradigm approach to learning the grammar, but the books provide a great launching point for discussion and reading that is much more fun than just sitting around memorizing verb endings. Some of the material is very British, so I have to explain some of the references to my kids, but other than that it is a wonderful curriculum.

5-0 out of 5 stars Latin for fun
This is a very sound method to teach Latin to the younger crowd.Would be perfect for homeschooling families! The story, based on archaelogical digs in Vindolanda, near Hadrian's wall in Britain, is entertaining and very engaging, and the skills build up painlessly.Highly recommended!I use it with 5th graders, who are known to read stories ahead of the class! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Amusing catapults, interesting history, but no metric units
This book contains easy-to-follow instructions on how to build different catapults. Unfortunately there is no data regarding approx. distance and height for the suggested projectiles, why you must try for yourself. All units are english/american, which means you must translate this to metric units if you are more used to that.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good reference for siege weapon builders
This is a juvenile title that is well illustrated with step by step directions for building several working models of weapons (from a simple sling to a trebuchet). It even gives directions for making rope. In addition to showing how to make siege engines, it covers their history, the reasons they were developed, how they were used and what caused a decline in their popularity. I can see a student using this book to make a model for a history class, or an SCA group adapting the information for a full-sized weapon.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent story book and manual.
This book is divided as chapters that begin with a narration of a battle or siege, and then and then presents the instructions on how to build several catapults. I learned my archetype of a catapult is an onagre, and that is one of the oldest kind, so I am severely obsolete. The instructions on how to build the models are very clear and easy to follow. The book is appropriate for young audiences, yet entertaining for adults too.

3-0 out of 5 stars Esperanza Rising
Esperanza Rising was a pretty good book. This book was basically about a Mexican girl who use to be rich but became poor. They lived on a huge ranch and owned a grape orchard. Sadly the night before her birthday Esperanza's father dies. After her father dies, her evil uncle takes over the ranch, and her and her mother become servants. The only way they could still live in their house was if her mother was to marry her brother inlaw. Esperanza's mother new that if she married him they wouldn't live a very good life. So now that they became servants they had to sneak from the ranch . They get in the back of a wagon and begin their journey to their new home. When they get there they go to their very small cabin. Esperanza and her mother had to work very hard and momma gets sick. Well I think that I am going to stop there so that I wont give any thing away. I do recommend this book though, you will enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars It made me cry!
It was such a great book!I could read it over again and again!I can't even imagine someone ever saying that they hated this book.I couldn't stop reading when I started the book.Sometimes I even read it when my Mom was talking to me.This book is very sad and exciting. It made it worth spending most of my time reading it!I would tell every one of my friends about this book and how I think they sould read it.If I was stranded on a deserted island and i could bring any two books in the whole world.I would choose Espeanza Rising and A Judy Blume book!If you like sad, exciting, and beautifuly written books, then this is the one for you!

4-0 out of 5 stars Lyddie- a review by Kelsey
Lyddie is a very poor farm girl who has a crazed mother who believes everything to be a bad sign. Her and her brother Charlie are very close and will do anything for each other. When a bear intrudes on the family Lyddie's mother takes it as a bad sign. She takes her youngest children to her sisters house and leaves Charlie and lyddie to take care of the farm. They end up surviving the winter only to find out their mother has found separate jobs for them. The children reluctantly leave each other as they set out for their jobs. Lyddie is to work in a inn where she gets payed about fifty cents a week. While working at the inn Lyddie gets her chance to change her life. Lyddie goes to work at a factory. Lyddie is known as "close to her money and her friendships" but you will never learn of someone who works harder.
5-0 out of 5 stars baandersonbookworm
For students in the middle grades or higher, Lyddie is a great read. It is a valuable resource for a social studies unit on slavery, the industrial revolution, the labor movement, yellow fever, or child labor. Lyddie is a symbol of strength, determination, and freedom. Paterson has created a strong central character and even though so much history is going on around her, it is on Lyddie that we continually focus our attention. I highly recommend book; very inspiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars "we can still hop."
Paterson doesn't miss with this great historical fiction about a young girl's struggles. This is a great girl adventure book about dashing hopes and the strength and will to endure at all costs. The portrait of Vermont farm life and Lowell Mill girls and workers rights during the 1800s is dead on. This is great read and a great teaching tool. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome read
I am reading this with my 7 yr old and 4 yr old and we love the stories. It is warm fuzzy reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Did I Wait So Long?
I'd watched the television series over the years and thought I'd like to read the books, although I was kind of embarassed to tell anyone because they were considered to be written for children or adolescents.
5-0 out of 5 stars an avid re-reader of the series
I've read these books since I was a little girl up to the present (46 y/o), and continue to do so.They are my very favorite books, I just ordered another set having read them so much over the years that my second set finally started falling apart.Anytime I get depressed with the world around me, with the behavior of people, (no one seems to have manners anymore, the willingness to work hard for and take care of their families, etc.), I read these books.I also learned a lot about pioneering days, how people cooked, built houses, made clothes, cleaned, washed, etc, etc, etc.Children who were able to go to school ( and some who couldn't) were expected to learn and in most cases did, and from the results of a sample questionaire that was on the internet some time ago knew a lot more than the average kid today.I can't begin to explain the benefits of reading these books to anyone no matter what age.I adore Laura, and plan to hopefully go the the Laura Ingalls Wilder house and museum in Mansfield, Mo. soon, as well as DeSmet, SD.I want to see the things she always talked of, such as Pa's fiddle. These books should be required reading in schools.I never much liked the series on TV however, they made up a lot of situations that were not believeable, and in general just didn't follow the books much.On the other hand, I'm glad someone did decide to do the series, it keeps Laura and her family alive in a lot of people's minds that haven't read the books. But, I can't say it enough, the books are much much better, READ THEM!!!!!!!!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Form Over Content
A fellow teacher is doing a unit on African-American lit and the Civil Rights Movement as a lead-in to Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird"."A Wreath for Emmett Till" was one of the books she shared with the class.I have perused it myself, still unsure whether I should actually purchase it or not.Two things other reviewers have mentioned that I too find appealing about the book are:1)The sheer complexity of constructing a heroic crown of sonnets and 2)the historical backdrop of the events described.Unfortunately, these aspects have very little to do with the content of the poems themselves. Most of the information about Till is contained in the preface and afterword, not in the poems themselves.Likewise, others reviewers, like I, praise Nelson for giving a tour-de-force in making a heroic crown of sonnets (and her commentaries about the sonnets were enlightening), but to be honest, the poems themselves were not particularly outstanding.I would buy the book more as an example of the structure and form of poetry rather than as an example of good poetry (If that makes sense).

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Poem
This book is in the form of a Heroic Sonnet is a brilliantly written book. It is about giving a wreath to Emmett Till, a young child who was lynched after whistling at a white woman. Till, who normally lived in Chicago, was spending the time at his uncle for the summer. After whistling at a white woman, Briant, Milan and a third person kidnapped Emmett Till. Soon after the kidapping, they lynched him. Later in the Trial, Briant and Milan were found not guilty, though later, it was proven they were guilty. This book was brilliantly written into a heroic sonnet, each of the first lines stating: R.I.P. EMMETT L. TILL. It got me emotionally connected, displeased by the racism people had back then (i.e. allowing Briant and Millan the right to be not guilty just because Till was Black). This book was brilliantly written through the use of similies. It allowed you to invision the racism back then. The only comment I have against it is the World Trade Center reference, mentioning 9/11 hadn't happened yet. Other than that, A Wreath for Emmet Till by Marilyn Nelsen was an excellent work of poetry.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ambitious but highly disapointing
This ambitious poetry book is based on a little known poetic style known as a crown of sonnets, used historically to honor great kings. In this unique book, author Marilyn Nelson tries to apply it to an ordinary kid named Emmett Till whose name became household when he was brutally lynched, and outrage over his murder fueled the early flames of the black civil rights movement.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Constitution
The book Shh!We're Writing y the Constitution by Jean Fritz. They all had to meet and they all showed up at different times.Benjamen Franklin was carried by some prisoners. This is a good book and you will learn alot from it.Theme is a good story element for this story because you learn alot about life. If you like books about the constitution than you will like this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The story of the Constitution Convention for young readers
The point of Jean Fritz's "Shh! We're Writing the Constitution" is that contrary to popular opinion, America had to be dragged kicking and screaming into becoming a new nation. While it is true that Americans were happy to be independent of Great Britain, the colonies that were now states had become used to being sovereign and many of them wanted to keep it that way. Illustrated by Tomie de Paola,, this engaging juvenile history tells how fifty-five delegates gathered in Philadelphia in the summer of 1787 to attempt to draw up a plan for the future of the United States. The result was the writing of the Constitution, despite the fact that initially no one agreed to either what should be in it or even if a constitution should be drawn up in the first place.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inside the Titanic: A Giant Cut-away Book
My 8 year old grandson is a Titanic nut. He has taken every Titanic related book out of the school library. When I gave him this book he was like estatic, "This is the best book ever Grandmom!" We are now making a Titanic model from a huge piece of styrofoam using this book as reference. The book is easy enough for him to understand (especially the cut aways) but has enough info to keep an adult interested.

4-0 out of 5 stars Giant Cut-away Book
It was a very interesting book. As the title indicates, it shows numerous cut-away pictures of the inside of the Titanic. It was nice to see where dining rooms, sitting rooms, the gym, the pool, etc were in relation to each other and the cabins and state rooms of the passengers. Good book for middle school aged children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for kids
My five-year old son recently became obsessed with the Titanic, so I was very pleased to see that there are actually books written and illustrated with children in mind. However, the illustrations and the information in this book were interesting to me as well!Very well done - highly recommended for kids of all ages! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Tongue-in-Cheek Classic
Somehow Lawson takes a figure who is already rather easy to relate to in Franklin and makes him all that much more approachable through the absurd suggestion that a little mouse had as much to do with the great man as anyone. It's pretty easy to imagine how some of these things might just have happened the way Amos describes them and to imagine that fur hat everywhere in Philadelphia and Paris.Of course, the existence of real Parisian medals depicting Franklin in said hat helps....

3-0 out of 5 stars Fairly good book
This book was pretty good but its not an attention grabber. I had to read this for a school assignment and it wasn't a book that I would normally read. It was boring but educational.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why isn't the movie version available?
It's easy to love sweet little Amos, the Mouse in Colonial American who befriended Ben Franklin and through him delivered the world its greatest inventions, including electricity.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love the Samantha books!!!!!
I have all the books I'v read all of them three times.Samantha is so nice to ALL her friends.I really like "Happy Birthday Samantha!"It's sooooooo funny!

4-0 out of 5 stars HAPPY ENDING FOR ALL!
The most charming book so far in the American Girls series. Samantha's life in turn-of-the-last-century New York presents in my view the series' most well-rounded picture into society at that time, with its incorporation of orphans and the working class in among its economically-privileged main characters. The writing here was the best of any American Girl novel and the dialogue seemed knitted to its era and not anachronistically modernized in the slightest. Yes, I know the improbable ending is the fabric of fairy tales but it still makes for a happy conclusion to a nice visit back a hundred years ago in time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Samantha Captures Victorian America
One of my favorite American Girls books, Samantha captures the story of victorian america.Although I missed the tv making of the book, I find the Samantha book a near classic for Christmas. The victorian times is among one of my favorites so this series by the American Girls became my favorite. This series is very innocent and sweet about the daily life of a normal victorian girl, but it touches on the authenticity of the victorian era just as the Emily Cobbs series in the Gifted Girls books, but without the mystery and adventure.Samantha is a little young for my 13 year old sister because of its simplicity in story, but alright for younger readers up to 10. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars encounter
this book is about when christopher colmbus came to america and first met the natives. It shows that they white explorers wernt really that great, and were not kind to the natives. I think that this book is ok, beacuse it shows the cruelty of the englsih exploers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not for childern.
This book was very descriptive. It had a theme, and stuck to it. It is historicallycorrect, but I don't think it's appropriate for younger kids. This book talks about dieases, and losing one's home and family. It's good for those kids in Kindergarden, but even then, that's pushing it. Overall, it's an okay book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The True Meaning behind Encounter
The book, Encounter, was so astonishing because of it's vivid descriptions. Not only did it express the arrival of Christopher Columbus through another's eyes, but it was through a child that the story was told. No one believed him because he was so young and they believed that the dream that had been sent to him was just a nightmare. He could tell that they were evil and greedy ever since they set foot in his home. The new arrivers had treated his people like indians, believing that their gifts were to great for such lowly people. Their clothes were so colorful compared to the clothes that wore. After being accepted in a new territory they compensated by having people taken away from them to become slaves. But still no one listened to such a small boy. He escaped and that's how he was able to tell his tale to others, but it was too late. All the people he had once knew were taken away from him forever. I really liked this book because it was in the point of view from someone so young and innocent. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!!
I am a Kindergarten teacher and this is a great book to read to them.It has excellent pictures. The words can be difficult for Kindergarteners to understand, however, with a little preparation, they will grasp the concept of the book. This book shows the daily lives of a Pilgrim girl.Samuel Eaton's Day compliments this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I share it with every teacher
We originally bought this book at Plimoth Village. My children love it. Having photos of people in actual period dress makes it so much easier to understand that they were real people and they lived differently from us. I share our copy of the book with my children's teachers every fall and they all love it and beg for our copy. Tonight, I'm buying them their own!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sarah Morton's Day Beautiful Photos
Live photos. Great story. The notes in the back on history of the Plimoth Plantation and who Sarah Norton really are cool. Sarah Morton was really a girl who lived in a house with dirt floor in 1627. There's even a glossary in the back. ... Read more

This book was recommended to me by a friend as a must read. After buying the book from Amazon, I couldn't put it down. The stories of the men who were left at sea and the struggle by the young man so many years later to restore the honor of the caption falsely accused is well written in this short book and should be on everyone's must read list. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Um, WOW!
an awesome book that shares my thoughts about most things. you'll love birdy's bitter sarcasm, her intellegence, and her independance. May she rock the thirteenth century! this book is so fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for anyone.
This book was required reading for my up and coming 6th grader. She hates to read, but this book has been a riot. She is not into Barbie, pink or much girly stuff.Fortunately, neither is Catherine. She and my daughter have a lot in common.I would highly recommend this book for all girls. If the boys can get past the sprinkling of puberty stuff they will like her antics too.
4-0 out of 5 stars Catherine Called BirdyBy: Ashley
When I first started off reading Catherine Called Birdy it wasn't very interesting, but after I read a little more it all made sense and turned out to be a funny and excellent book. It gives a lot of details and makes the story really come alive.
