5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just Pharaohs--but all of Egypt!
This book is another Landmark Books success!
5-0 out of 5 stars Pharaohs!
The mythology of Egypt can be fun, but the history is what really draws your attention. A clear part of Egyptian history is her pharaohs, and this book follows the line of ancient pharaohs with adequately-sized sections for each.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Effective Introduction to Ancient Egypt for Children
Written for children who are independent readers, Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt was, nevertheless, a fascinating introduction to Ancient Egypt for all my children. My younger daughter was in first grade at the time and needed some help with the reading, but the stories themselves were of great interest to her. It was fun for me to see all three of them learn about the Rosetta Stone and other archaeological discoveries, most of which I hadn't learned about until I was well past childhood. It's amazing what the children will find interesting when it comes wrapped in a story. Although some may regard the story-telling as somewhat fanciful (obviously we don't really know what most of these people really thought or felt), the author has succeeded in her quest to bring the attention of the reader into the context of the history she describes.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Obbsessed and Loving It!
First off, I love ancient Egypt! It's my life! I want to be an Egyptologist when I grow up!! I love it, love it, love it! I admit, I have never gottne this product, but from the reviews I've read, it sounds GREAT!!! I want myself, but being a kid, I'm broke....... But, you should deffitnitly get this if you love egypt! Even if you don't, it's a great way to start to love egypt! I love it and I don't even have it!! It sounds like so much fun! So go ahead, if you have money go out there and get it!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for all ages
I bought this treasure chest as a "treat" (for my daughter or myself, I am still not sure) to finish off our study of ancient Egypt. We couldn't wait, so we opened it right away and were thrilled.I expected most of the activities to be too hard for my 6yo, but she has enjoyed them thoroughly. The lock can be a bit hard for small fingers to open, but the key is easy to work and that can be fun enough in itself. There are 2 board games, both of which she could play. One is very, very simple (think Chutes and Ladders) while the other requires more strategy.Depending on your child's interests/abilities in games you might find that you only play one of the two, but we have been happy playing both. The playing pieces are made rather flimsy light cardboard, but they are functional enough if your child is careful. The stamping set is about average, and suffers from all the little problems child's stamping kits are heir to, but overall produces legible hieroglyphs. You'll need an extra pair of hands or weights to hold the papyrus unrolled, but it looks great when you're finished. The hieroglyph "decoder" wheel has been great fun for my daughter who thinks codes are exciting. The necklace was a little disappointing, only because the string provided came apart when I tried to disentangle it.We replaced it with our own string/wire and made our lovely necklace just fine. The beads had holes large enough for my child to thread them herself, although a needle proved helpful. The posters (one of deities reverses to one of regents and another one with a map) are attractive and informative without being overwhelming and my daughter enjoyed placing the approppriate stickers on the spaces provided on the map.The only piece of this chest w ehave not used yet is the grid for reproducing an egyptian picture, but I'm sure many other children are more artistically inclined than mine and will find it fun.Overall, my daughter and I have enjoyed this kit immensely and highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great History tool
This is justthe sort of thing I would have loved when I was a kid. I'm an adult and I love it anyway. This is a great way to spark a child's interest in history. For someone who already loves studying ancient Egypt it will provide hours of fun. The package is beautiful and makes a wonderful gift. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amistad, a huge historic event
Amistad shows what happended in the 1800's based on slavery with Africans who were kidnaped by white people who did not spoke thier language, how the fed them almost like dogs, how the crew treated the African women, how they decided who died and who lived and the people who died throw them of the boat, it was awful, how people bought slaves under the table around the world.5-0 out of 5 stars Thje Book is Better Than the Movie
This book was turned into a movie, but like most books, it's better than the movie. It's hard to imagine that such things happened, but they really did. I'd liek to learn more about the people on the ship and thier lives once they got home and to freedom

This is a very thorough, entertaining, and informative treatment of the subject of mummies.Illustrations in the book were inspired by ancient Egyptian art. This is a great book to supplement any elemenatary study of Egypt.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
What a great book! The author gives really interesting information regarding mummies and how they're made. The illustrations are good too.I liked that the whole book was illustrated without real pictures of mummies as it creeps out my daughter!A great overview of the process the Egyptian priests used to mummify a person.

5-0 out of 5 stars This was my favorite book as a child.
I must have checked it out a hundred times as a child when I was in elementary school. It is written in a beautiful and colourful comic book form. Yet is also very informitive and filled with interesting information. It gave me a fascination for mummies and ancient cultures that has lasted my whole life. Even the sensitive details are presented in a clinical, illuminating light. I would recommend this to some one of any age who has an interest in or mummies ancient egypt in general. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for beginners.
"Hatshepsut, His Majesty, Herself" is a very good book for children or people who just want a straight forward history of the first succesful female pharoah in ancient Egypt. This was the first book I read of Hatshepsut and I enjoyed it alot. It encouraged me to begin to learn more about her. She was truly a great ruler and worth investigating further. The book consists of a basic history of Hatshepsut and her accomplishments. If you liked this book check out a longer young adult novel "His Majesty, Queen Hatshepsut" by 'Dorothy Sharp Carter'. ... Editorial Review

Once there was a little girl--an orphaned African princess--who narrowly escaped death by human sacrifice in a West African village in 1850. A British sea captain named Frederick E. Forbes saved her life by talking King Gezo of Dahomey into giving the girl to Queen Victoria of England as a gift: "She would be a present from the King of the blacks to the Queen of the Whites." As impossible as this tale sounds, it is a true one. Award-winning author Walter Dean Myers--piecing together her story from letters he found in a rare book and ephemera shop in London--paints a hauntingly detached portrait of the small African princess whom the heroic captain named Sarah Forbes Bonetta. 5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and easy to read.
My son had to pick two books off of a large list to read over the summer for school. After reading the other reviews of this book, we picked it.It was a wonderful choice. The book was very interesting, fast paced, well written and easy to read.I read it in 3 hours, and my son was able to read in in a few nights without any complaints of boredom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Isn't Hollywood Calling???
If any literary giant needs to have his work adapted to film, it is Myers. As one of the premier writers of fiction for juveniles, the author has added another significant piece to his long line of classics. This one tells the story of a little-known African princess who comes under the wing of England's legendary Queen Victoria. 3-0 out of 5 stars Good book!
I think this is a very well written book. I think that Walter Dean Myers is an amazing writer and that it is great he found this fantastic girl that many have never heard of. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well done
It's sort of sad that a book like this is even necessary, but I have seen teachers make assignments such as, "Everyone will do a report on how people live in different places. We need reports on Japan, Mexico, Germany, China, and Africa."5-0 out of 5 stars children today need this book
Having visited many classes of young children, I have seen the ignorance that children today have about the African continent and the vast cultures that inhabit the mysterious land.Knight's writing is academic, but not too technical, and playful but honest as she presents a look at the daily lives of children from all over the continent. The book is complete with a listing of all the African countries and important facts about them making it handy in the classroom and wonderful detailed stories about specifically chosen countries making it useful for home story telling.Children need this book and the bst part is that they will love it too.

4-0 out of 5 stars eye opening
Beginning in 2001 I worked with two refugee families from Liberia.I wish I had read this book first, because it would have helped me to understand better the sorts of things these families might have experienced before they arrived in our country. While experiences of war, persecution and homelessness vary among people arriving in the USA, the feeling of confusion (even when you speak English, like 'my' families did) and dependence mixed with utter relief of finally getting here seem to be common among all. "My" families knew basic things, but our housing, food and school systems were totally overwhelming even for these educated people. And the police, which we're taught to depend upon, strike fear into every refugee I've ever met. Most of them have had bad experiences with police.
4-0 out of 5 stars Of Beetles and Angels
Mawi Asgedom is a young man who went from the deserts of Sudan to a full scholarship to Harvard. Of Beetles and Angels by Mawi himself depicts the life of his childhood and the struggles he had to go through to succeed. This book tells about his young childhood in Sudan, moving to America, and then finally succeeding and graduating from Harvard. The story starts out with Mawi as a young child born in Adi Wahla, Ethiopia. He grew up in a refugee camp in Umsagata. Before his family immigrated to America he had two other brothers named Tewolde and Mawi. Tewolde and Mehret were extremely close and were best friends. Conditions in Sudan were devastating. The family was living on was UN rations and had the fear that any day that their village could be invaded, so Haileab (Mawi's father) decided that they were going to move to America. They found a sponsor to help them when they got to the States. They left Africa in 1982. They left behind a village of family and friends which was heartbreaking for Mawi and the rest of his family.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Memoir of the American Dream
Of Beetles and Angles is the remarkable non-fiction account of Mawi Asgedom's jouney as an African war refugee to America and the obstacles that he and his family had to overcome. In his own words he describes his inspiring transformation into a man with traditional values and principles mixed in with the demands of everyday life in a new society. Influenced by his older brother andfather, Mawi sets out to experience the American dream and more importantly, look upon each and every person as angels sent to test the will of our hearts. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars We are different-We are the same - a review of "A is for Africa"
As a mom of two I like to supply a variety of books for my children and I like this one as it has proven it's usefulness on a couple of levels.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Way to Learn the Alphabet!
This children's book offers an inviting glimpse into West African traditions. From "A is for Africa" to "I is for Indigo", the author Ifeoma Onyefulu uses important aspects of West African life to represent each letter of the alphabet. The book is appropriate for kids of all ages.My daughter is one year old, so I simplify the book by reading just the first sentence of each page, such as "V is for village".The text continues to describe that "V is for the village, where many people live together, sharing the same traditions and beliefs. The old people in the village teach the young ones the old customs, as they were once taught themselves."The photographs in this book are not only beautiful, but very representative of West Africa.Every child interested in Africa should have this book!I am looking forward to reading Ifeoma Onyefulu's other children's books. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Who said History had to be Boring?
This book is a hoot. I read a review not long ago by a reader who bought it thinking it was a history text. What it's really meant to do is help you organize your children's study of Egypt utilizing other resources. And this it does very effectively.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide.. I highly recomend
I love the approch of this book. My daughter is 10 and we have enjoyed learning about the ancient egypt history. There are lots of activies suggested in the book that truly make the history come alive and sink in.. I would recomend this book very highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to study Egypt!
As a history teacher and homeschooling mom, I always look for ideas togive my students to enhance thier study of the era or place. This is awonderful supplement to any study of Egypt for all students. The Christianemphasis provides an added dimension and allows the students to incorporatethe study of the Biblical accounts of Egypt into the study. This is highlyrecommended for a well-rounded approach. The guide also includes wonderfulsupplemental readings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Stephen Biesty's glorious cross-sections take us on a journey down the Nile
The premise of "Egypt: In Spectacular Cross-Section," which features the captivating artwork of Stephen Biesty, is that eleven-year-old Dedia and his father, Captain Wennufer, undertake a 39-day journey down the Nile River during the reign of the Pharaoh Ramses the Great in the year 1230 B.C.E.Officially Ramses II, he is commonly believed to be the pharaoh of the Exodus, although this is in dispute. His mummy has been unwrapped, so that we can actually see what he looks like, although he is alive and well within the confines of this volume.Dedia and his father travel down the great river, delivery cargo as they go, eventually arriving at Piramesse, the site of the magnificent royal palace of Ramses. There Nebre, Dedia's uncle, a rich and important scribe, is getting married. The downside to the journey is that Dedia's stern aunt Meritate and know-it-all daughter Ipuia are coming along on the trip.
