5-0 out of 5 stars Great , engaging book about pioneer life!
I loved this book. I read it before I gave it to my daughter. It is a fictional family, but all the information is true to life. Interspersed with the story of the Robertsons, you can learn how to make your own cheese, dip a candle, or learn to tell the time from the sun.5-0 out of 5 stars this is a fanntastic book
The Pioneer Sampler5-0 out of 5 stars Experience pioneer life!!!
Barbara Greenwood has written a wonderful book that is as much fun for adults to read to children as it is for the children to read themselves. She doesn't just 'tell' about the Robertson's, she 'shows', drawing the reader into their lives...a pleasant place to be. I especially love Granny's story about how she came to America,on a ship, from Scotland. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The heroing tale of a young girl taking a stand
Emma Edmonds is a young girl from Canada, living in the North during the Civil War. She's always been outgoing and bold- never able to stay in one place at a time. So when she feels a calling to join the Union army, she does what any rebellious girl would do- cuts her hair, gets the uniform, and joins up. At first she's awkward and unsure- terrified that she'll be discovered. She sees the whole thing as a big adventure-that is, until an old love interest of hers is killed in the war. She decides to really take a stand and looks at the war in a whole different way. She fights with all her power-until she gets word that a Union spy was recently killed by the Confederates. She quickly lands the job of replacement. She goes across the rebel lines, a different disguise each time, and collects useful information which helped to save many battles.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Civil War Story
Behind Rebel Lines is an excellent book by Seymour Reit. It is about a girl named Emma Edmonds, who disguised herself as a man to be a Civil War spy. In a part in the book, she was in the enemy base disguised as a black slave. When she was in the base, she had found that many of the guns where fake. Finding that out saved the Union army many casualties. I will recommend this book for 4th grade and up. This book is based on a true story.
4-0 out of 5 stars Stregth and curage
I liked this book because it is about a girl named Emma Edmonds 1841- 1898 in the civil war disguised as a man. This is a story about courage, strength, and knowing what's possible. This book has no pictures, but is still great anyway. I think that the voice was very good because the author goes by her disguise. This is a great book. I hope you will read this book, and like it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Maestro Text!
Maestro covers the period of Colonialization in an inclusive manner.I feel that she did an excellent job of including multiple perspectives of all people involved in the colonization period.Native Americans and their interaction with European settlers are highlighted on most every page of the book. The colorful pictures and maps help to guide the reader to a better understanding of the period.Like the other two Maestro text it is quite comprehensive. It could easily be used to replace the traditional textbook. But I find that since it is so comprehensive, I probably wouldn't use it with the Exploration & Conquest text because of the length of each.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Series!
I came across one book by Betsy Maestro "The Discovery of the Americas" and I loved it.The text is simple and the illustrations are great. It is historically accurate as well, a must in my checklist.I didn't realize she also wrote the historical series "You Wouldn't Want to..." They are my favorite!! I recommend all of her books, especially for teachers.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An adolecent's journey
Having read in various books of the French and Indian war of Susanah Johnson's captivity and ordeal, I came across this fictionalized account set through the eyes of her sister, Miriam. Being curious, I purchased it.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Captivating story!
This Historical Fiction Novel is great!!It helped me understand more about the time era. After the first few pages, I got really into the book.It made me feel as if I really were the main character, and going through her struggles. This book expresses the characters really well, and is fun to read!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless
I read this book first time in 1962 and have re-read it many times since.I've also given copies of it to many young girls as gifts.I love this book, the adventure, the romance and the survival of spirit. It also gave me my life long hobby of spinning and weaving which I, like Susanna, find such comfort and enjoyment in.Ms Spears other books are excellent but I believe this is the best.I just wonder why it was never turned into a movie. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It made me cry!
This was a very touching book. I read it to my 6 and 5 yo and I think they liked it fine. I was in tears at the end! The girls may not understand the whole message at this age by I will save it for the years to come!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wall by; Eve Bunting
I like this book because it tells about some brave people that die in the war. A lot of people visit the wall in Washington D.C to show repsect to the people that are dead. This is why I liek this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wall
The Wall has touched my heart. I am Vietnamese so I understand what the character in the books are feeling. This book teaches good information about the Vietnam wall that was made for the people that died in the Vietnam war. I think it's sad that the boy has to look for to look through the long list of names to find his grandpa's name. It was nice to see what the boy learns from the wall and the people at the wall too. I recomomand this too most kids so that they can learn about the wall that was made to honor all the people that died in the Vietnam war. ... Read more

I read this book to our 7 year old grandson over our vacation at the beach (OBX)last summer. With Annie, our Newfoundland dog at our feet, the story came to life, for all of us. (Annie just snoozed) I thoroughly enjoyed "translating"some of the "Newfieisms" and expanding on the relationships which the author presents. If you enjoy reading to kids, I wholeheartedly recommend Ms. Hiatt's books. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Reminder of Home
This is a lovely book with lots of interesting facts about Canada.Living overseas this is my favorite book in my daughter's library. When she is older we plan to use this to teach her lots of things about Canada. This is a perfect shower gift to a Canadian mom living outside of Canada.

5-0 out of 5 stars M is for a marvellous book!
"M is for Maple: A Canadian Alphabet" is a marvellous find. Whether you are a geography buff, full of Canadian pride, or someone who just loves to look at beautiful things, this is the book for you! 5-0 out of 5 stars A fabulous "Eh? B.C." of Canada, full of nuggets of history!
Some of the letters in Ulmer and Rose's A-B-C of Canada are ones you'd expect: "T" is for Toronto, "Q" is for Quebec, and, of course, given the title, "M" is for Maple. While those few are expected, some of what Ulmer and Rose chose to exhibit for this distinctly Canadian A-B-C shows a delicate and wonderful understanding of both the child and adult audience of this book.Read more

This is about two boys named Tim and Roy living with their aunt Ravhel. All of a sudden they discover that there is a gold rush going on in the Yukon. When they got there, they had to climb and climb until they reached the golden stairs. Then they had two choices, White Pass or the Chilkoot Pass. They took the Chilkoot Pass because it was longer but it was safer. Then they reached Lake Lindeman. They had to form a group and build a boat at to get to Lake Bennett. They reached Lake Bennett in one peice then they found the town Dawson. They tried searching for gold but had no luck. They got a claim. They struck it rich, they only had enough to get home and have a little left for their aunt Rachel to see. So they went home happy and content as can be. Read this book it will take you back to the time of the gold rushes.

It only takes 30 minutes to read this charming book of 20 pictures, with text on the opposite page, but do yourself a favor and savor it longer.
