3-0 out of 5 stars whathappenedtomaps?
This American History book is a very good, but not excellentcoverage of the History of the United States. The book istypical entry level college material. Historical information is either very interesting with good detail to boring and vague.Photographs, portraits, paintings, charts, and illustrations are abundant and beautiful helping to keep interest level moving. However, the book rapidly sheds its allure and interest. That is because it fails to deliver on providing enough, interesting and neccessary political and war detail maps associated with important major historical events.

My 12 year old son loves listening to the CD.He doesn't even consider it school work and I would guess that he is learning a whole lot more than he would from a text book.It is a wonderful overview of history.

5-0 out of 5 stars informative ingenuity
a beaufully crafted book. the art of pop-ups still has a magical effect that brings out the child in all of us. the content is informative, and the illustrations are wonderfull. if that isn't enough, the pop ups take it over the top. trully magnificent.

4-0 out of 5 stars pop ups to consolidate history learning
This book is like others in its genre, surprising and effective in how the mechanics work.Suitable for children or adults with some interest/knowledge about the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely captivating and brilliant!
When I first heard about the book, it was because a friend recomended it. She said it was one of the best books she ever read, and after reading it myself I completely agree. It is about a girl growing up in the Chinese Cultural Revolution and facing the challenge of growing up in a family with a bad reputation according to the government. I liked this book because it really made me think about how kids are living. Also, because I like books about people with a realistic life, not a fairytale. I would reccomend it to any of my friends!

1-0 out of 5 stars Stinks
Don't like it at all. Don't even waste your time reading it. i was forced to read it!!! Two thumbs DOWN :-(!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Depth of Mankind...
This is not the first and probably not the last 'Cultural Revolution Memoir' that I have read.I must admit feeling a bit numb to the stories and account of this tragic point in Chinese history. It has been over a year since that last 'memoir' that I have read, and a friend passed the book on for me to check out.It was time to be reminded of the pain that so many around me have faced in their lives. What is remarkable about Ji Li Jiang's story is not the uniqueness, but rather the commonness of her experience among millions of others. This in no way should negate her or others struggles, yet rather serve to deepen compassion for the many who have experienced destruction at the hands fellow humans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great summer Read.
one thing i remeber about summer reading lists for school, was that they tried to pick the most boring, shoot yourself in the foot, educational reads they could find. almost as if to make people(kids) hate reading? I mean how many kinds will voluntarily sit down and read a book any way? Dosen't it make more sense to make everyone read 1 book that they like, instead of several ones that they can't stand?
5-0 out of 5 stars Sign Of The Beaver
The book is amazing! It is about a boy named Matt who is left alone in the woods to guard the familys caben while his dad goes to bring the rest of the family to the caben. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Modern Classic
Ernst Gombrich was an amazing man.His excellent book "The Story of Art" is recognized as the standard work in Art History, and he made many other contributions to the field as well as to society in general. His "A Little History of the World" was his first book, the only one he wrote in German, written just as he was finishing his studies at the University of Vienna in 1936.He wrote the book very quickly and it was a success until the Nazi's banned it for being too pacifistic.By that time Gombrich was already living in England, where he remained for the rest of his life until he passed away in 2001.
5-0 out of 5 stars Raves from History Teacher and Bibliophile
I actually bought the audio version and listened to it on a two-day drive.I was riveted to my book. The miles just slipped past me as the beautiful simplicity of Gombrich's writing took me on a glorious tour of our world. For the first time in my life, World History was One Story, not a series of many stories.
4-0 out of 5 stars Historical Primer
'A Little History of the World' is exactly what the title indicates. Gombrich takes the reader from the dawn of time to the mid-twentieth century. Gombrich covers cave men, great religious leaders, philosophers, and events over an incredible timeline.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh, Yikes! Oh, Yes!!!!!
This is a book kids have been waiting for. As a school librarian, I can testify that copies of Oh, Yuck! are never on the shelf. Now there is a waiting list for Oh, Yikes! as well. Masoff writes in the most entertaining manner. She fully understands the mind of a child. Kids are so wildly amused by the subjects and the illustrations that they don't notice she's managed to include more facts than most text books. This is a wonderful book!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inside the Titanic: A Giant Cut-away Book
My 8 year old grandson is a Titanic nut. He has taken every Titanic related book out of the school library. When I gave him this book he was like estatic, "This is the best book ever Grandmom!" We are now making a Titanic model from a huge piece of styrofoam using this book as reference. The book is easy enough for him to understand (especially the cut aways) but has enough info to keep an adult interested.

4-0 out of 5 stars Giant Cut-away Book
It was a very interesting book. As the title indicates, it shows numerous cut-away pictures of the inside of the Titanic. It was nice to see where dining rooms, sitting rooms, the gym, the pool, etc were in relation to each other and the cabins and state rooms of the passengers. Good book for middle school aged children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for kids
My five-year old son recently became obsessed with the Titanic, so I was very pleased to see that there are actually books written and illustrated with children in mind. However, the illustrations and the information in this book were interesting to me as well!Very well done - highly recommended for kids of all ages! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Resource; A Great Story
I am a teacher who was looking for a book for my students to use when we study Thanksgiving.Without a doubt, this story is one of the best that we use.It is a great introduction to reading non-fiction, and it provides a wealth of information for students, parents, and teachers.5-0 out of 5 stars This book is hard to put down!
I got "If You Sailed on the Mayflower in 1620" for our Thanksgiving unit based on several glowing recommendations. I was not disappointed. Both my 5 yo and I had a hard stopping once we got started. I learned things about the Pilgrims I'd never known. And, the content is fascinating for children. It covered such curious topics as Did they bathe on the Mayflower?, What did they eat?, How were people who broke the law punished?, What did children do?It was written to entertain anyone over the age of 4. It's a question/answer book and exceptionally well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I purchased this book for my Grandchildren but this is not only a great book for 4-8 year olds but for anyone over 4. You might learn some things you didn't know. By the way, if you ever go to Plymouth you can go on the Mayflower II, and be sure to visit Plimoth Plantation (it's like going back in time to 1630). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Life in colonial New England from the perspective of a child
Life in New England in colonial times was hard, a good growing year and people could eat well, a bad growing year and there was hunger. Harvest was an especially busy time, as everyone had to work all hours to get all of the food stored away.
4-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books growing up!
I ordered this to reminisce. I remember vividly the pages and drawings that I loved in this book!! Drawings are very precious and expressive. The text of this original 1960s version is a bit dated (mentions Indians as a threat to the lives of settlers - true but not really PC to say it). There is an updated version of the book, which I haven't read. Love this one!

3-0 out of 5 stars GOOD WITH OTHER MATERIALS
I was forwarded this book by my AP teacher. I thought that along with the class, the book helped. I would use this along with your class textbook and class notes. But if you are taking this without a class, I would not recomend it. I would definately use an actual text book, such as the AP version of World Civilizations: the global experience. the book is written by someone who writes the AP exam, and it very good. The book is definately worth the money. I would also use the college board's AP website for the requirements and make sure that you can answer those comparisons. I made charts that had those comparisons. But I would only use this book along with your class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Depends on what you prefer...
I took the AP World History exam in 2004.This book was my primary source of information, since my teacher was absolutely useless. We were given "study outlines" that were never gone over, and the material was very rarely taught.I didn't really begin studying for the AP exam until March/April.I started to read this book, and found it to be very helpful. When I took the test, I got a 5.
