3-0 out of 5 stars a mom in Nashville
I got this book because my 5-year old wanted to learn more about the ancyent Egypt. The images are pretty cool, but the information and contains are randomly written (maybe this is good for older kids that already know some about the ancient Egypt culture). However, you could get a better introductory book for 10 bucks more.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY INTERESTING

5-0 out of 5 stars Obbsessed and Loving It!
First off, I love ancient Egypt! It's my life! I want to be an Egyptologist when I grow up!! I love it, love it, love it! I admit, I have never gottne this product, but from the reviews I've read, it sounds GREAT!!! I want myself, but being a kid, I'm broke....... But, you should deffitnitly get this if you love egypt! Even if you don't, it's a great way to start to love egypt! I love it and I don't even have it!! It sounds like so much fun! So go ahead, if you have money go out there and get it!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for all ages
I bought this treasure chest as a "treat" (for my daughter or myself, I am still not sure) to finish off our study of ancient Egypt. We couldn't wait, so we opened it right away and were thrilled.I expected most of the activities to be too hard for my 6yo, but she has enjoyed them thoroughly. The lock can be a bit hard for small fingers to open, but the key is easy to work and that can be fun enough in itself. There are 2 board games, both of which she could play. One is very, very simple (think Chutes and Ladders) while the other requires more strategy.Depending on your child's interests/abilities in games you might find that you only play one of the two, but we have been happy playing both. The playing pieces are made rather flimsy light cardboard, but they are functional enough if your child is careful. The stamping set is about average, and suffers from all the little problems child's stamping kits are heir to, but overall produces legible hieroglyphs. You'll need an extra pair of hands or weights to hold the papyrus unrolled, but it looks great when you're finished. The hieroglyph "decoder" wheel has been great fun for my daughter who thinks codes are exciting. The necklace was a little disappointing, only because the string provided came apart when I tried to disentangle it.We replaced it with our own string/wire and made our lovely necklace just fine. The beads had holes large enough for my child to thread them herself, although a needle proved helpful. The posters (one of deities reverses to one of regents and another one with a map) are attractive and informative without being overwhelming and my daughter enjoyed placing the approppriate stickers on the spaces provided on the map.The only piece of this chest w ehave not used yet is the grid for reproducing an egyptian picture, but I'm sure many other children are more artistically inclined than mine and will find it fun.Overall, my daughter and I have enjoyed this kit immensely and highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great History tool
This is justthe sort of thing I would have loved when I was a kid. I'm an adult and I love it anyway. This is a great way to spark a child's interest in history. For someone who already loves studying ancient Egypt it will provide hours of fun. The package is beautiful and makes a wonderful gift. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for beginners.
"Hatshepsut, His Majesty, Herself" is a very good book for children or people who just want a straight forward history of the first succesful female pharoah in ancient Egypt. This was the first book I read of Hatshepsut and I enjoyed it alot. It encouraged me to begin to learn more about her. She was truly a great ruler and worth investigating further. The book consists of a basic history of Hatshepsut and her accomplishments. If you liked this book check out a longer young adult novel "His Majesty, Queen Hatshepsut" by 'Dorothy Sharp Carter'. ... This book was very helpful and a great deal of fun! Although we would have loved to have used it for a homeschoolers teaching tool, we actually used it for a birthday party. My 6yo son had an Egyptian Archealogical Dig for his birthday and we used this book to make games about the Ancient Egyptians and learn a lot more than we thought.I will purchase more in the series for our History lessons this school year-- what a great find! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Heavy but Worth it!
These DK white books are uncommonly heavy. They don't have as much detailed information as the Blue Guides or Rough Guides, but are good for brief visits or first timers.Where they excell is their outstanding illustrations and diagrams, often cutaways. The maps are good, but the labeling system makes it difficult to locate things easily.Lots of full page color photos give a preview of the trip. It's a daunting task to try to cover India in a single guide, but this book almost does it. It's well organized, color coded by region. The picture of Palitana in the Gujarat section became the foundation for that section of our 2003 trip to India [ cascoly.com/trav/india.asp ], and the diversion provided one of the highlights of the entire 6 week trip.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Union fights to control Central Tennessee in 1862
"The Struggle for Tennessee: Tupelo to Stones River" is the second of the volumes in the Time-Life Civil War series dealing with the Western Theater of the war after the Battle of Shiloh.Obviously this part of the war has never received the attention of the Eastern Theater where Lee's Army of Northern Virginia dueled the Army of the Potomac, so there is something intrinsically interesting about finding out more about what was happening out West.James Street, Jr. presents his subject as a war of maneuvers in and around Tennessee. After the capture of Corinth, Mississippi in May 1862, a portion of Major General Don Carlos Buell's Union army was dispatched towards Chattanooga, the critical railroad center that was the gateway to Georgia. However, Confederate armies under Generals Kirby Smith and Braxton Bragg moved from Eastern Tennessee into Kentucky to threatened Louisville and Cincinnati. After a drawn battle at Perryville, Kentucky on October 8, Major General William Rosencrans succeeded Buell and that December left Nashville to fight Bragg's reorganized Army of Tennessee near Murfreesboro, on the banks of Stone River. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good study designed for young students
My 8 year old son and I read through the Old Testament's historical books using this book as our guide to discussion topics. The Shearer's have presented some interesting questions and comments on the Old Testament scriptures and I found myself learning almost as much as my son did!I would recommend this book for parents with children in elementary school, or even older.

4-0 out of 5 stars Old Testament The Painless Way!
As we have used this guide through the past year I would say that it is fairly simple & straight forward in style. It uses a question format that's easy to use. Read a few passages of bible text & pose the questions from the guide. Even our 4 & 6 year olds like to give a tryat answering the questions though it is geared to older children!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to help teach children ancient history.
The Greenleaf Guide is an excellent resource to help you teach your children ancient history and Old Testament history. For each lesson, you read a chapter or so of the Old Testament. The guide then gives youquestions to discuss, explanations of the historical setting, as well assuggestions for how to handle "complicated" readings from theBible. The guide is helpful even if you want to read it to study OldTestament history yourself. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Who said History had to be Boring?
This book is a hoot. I read a review not long ago by a reader who bought it thinking it was a history text. What it's really meant to do is help you organize your children's study of Egypt utilizing other resources. And this it does very effectively.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide.. I highly recomend
I love the approch of this book. My daughter is 10 and we have enjoyed learning about the ancient egypt history. There are lots of activies suggested in the book that truly make the history come alive and sink in.. I would recomend this book very highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to study Egypt!
As a history teacher and homeschooling mom, I always look for ideas togive my students to enhance thier study of the era or place. This is awonderful supplement to any study of Egypt for all students. The Christianemphasis provides an added dimension and allows the students to incorporatethe study of the Biblical accounts of Egypt into the study. This is highlyrecommended for a well-rounded approach. The guide also includes wonderfulsupplemental readings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy reading but informative
English is not my primary language but this book was easy enough to finish in two days. I did not know much about Israel-Palestina conflict and was looking for a good book with basic information. This book taught me how the three religions-- Judaism, Muslim and Chiristianity-- are related, and why different peoples see the Holy Land as their homes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally!
After reading this book, I feel that I finally have better understanding of what's going on -- and more importantly, why --in the Holy Land area.
5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding the Holy Land
This book should be read by anyone of any age who really wants to understand the full story of the conflict in the Middle East. Mr. Frank offers an empathic and stunninly clear explanation of the cultural and political background and beliefs of all parties to the conflict. He includes a tremendous amount of information, making this complicated subject accessible and shedding light on a situation most Americans know little about. I highly recommend this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Crusade which Preceded the 'War on Terror'
Many people have seen the excellent PBS documentary, "Holy Warriors", about Saladin and Richard the Lionheart in the Third Crusade. For me it opened up a whole new field of inquiry, for although I am myself an historian, my field is not the Middle Ages. I sought out and read many books on Saladin, and found him a fascinating and admirable character, and an excellent antidote to the hatred of Islam which is presently being fomented by our government. It seemed to me that it was important to get the word out-- especially to the next generation-- about this Muslim whose character was so contrary to prevalent stereotypes.Diane Stanley's book fulfills this need.It presents the true history of Saladin and the Third Crusade in a manner which is readily understandable to children and accompanied by beautiful illustrations. It seems unlikely that any child who has read this book will grow up feeling the hatred that our government wants us to feel for all Muslims, and in that lies its greatest virtue.

2-0 out of 5 stars beautiful book, but anti-Christian
This book caught my eye at the library because it has beautiful illustrations, and the title obviously gives away its very positive view of Saladin and the Muslim faith.Given the publication date, it is not surprising that the book presents Muslims and their faith in a positive light; however, the book goes to the extreme in presenting Muslims as good and Christians as evil.Children in this age group are likely to be confused by this portrayal of their faith if they are Christians, while those of a Muslim background could very well see the current atrocities committed by Islamic jihadists as justified. Moreover, children at this age don't have the analytical skills to realize that there is more to the history of the Crusades than is presented here.In my opinion, this book may well be an excellent biography of Saladin, but given the age of the intended audience, the slant of the book gives an inappropriate message.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Kids
It's a great book, pretty good for kids. The book did overlook the fact that Saladin was also a physician and chemist (or alchemist as they used to be called back then).

4-0 out of 5 stars Unique for the age group
This book is marked for 4- to 8-year-olds.Considering the amount of non-age-appropriate content (from deviant sexual behavior to simply stunning amounts of violence) as well as the sheer density of the text, I would change that to the 10-16 age group.Younger children would be unlikely to understand the narrative, anyway, and if they did, they might get nightmares from it, despite the fact that Connolly doesn't wallow in gory details!
5-0 out of 5 stars Throw away textbook versions...
How I wish this book or ones like it were available to me as a textbook when I was in school. It certainly kept my interest piqued and explained it simply to the average reader not only through the verbage but with helpful informative illustrations.4-0 out of 5 stars A helpful synthesis of big picture and the details
A valuable reference tool for Sunday School teachers or any student of the intertwined political and religious events in first century Palestine. The book spans the period beginning with Herod the Great and ending with the destruction of the Jewish nation by the Romans. It is facinating to see how Herod changes loyalties among wives, benefactors, and potential succesors as often as he changes sandals. Connolly also gives us much detail about the rulers who followed Herod. This book is written from a secular perspective, but students of the Bible will gain insights into the political events surrounding the lives of Jesus and his followers. One can find heavenly humor in the irony that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, within sight of of a mountaintop fortress Herod built only a few miles to the South. Those interested in the history, geography, andtopography of this period will not be disappointed.I purchased my first copy in Jerusalem to help me locate ancient places within the modern setting. Connolly's descriptions of seiges at Jerusalem and Masada give a clear picture of weapons and tactics of a Roman army. The illustrations are very detailed and a few are a bit gory. The vocabulary, complexity of sentences and assumed level of knowledge make this book more suited to adult readers. I've given several to fellow teachers.A 9 - 12 year-old might enjoy the pictures, but very few will comprehend all the nuances. ... Read more
