Editorial Review

"Did you ever fly a kite in bed? Did you ever walk with ten cats on your head?" Such are the profound, philosophical queries posed in this well-loved classic by Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel. While many rhymes in this couplet collection resemble sphinx-worthy riddles, Seuss's intention is clear: teach children to read in a way that is both entertaining and educational. It matters little that each wonderful vignette has nothing to do with the one that follows. (We move seamlessly from a one-humped Wump and Mister Gump to yellow pets called the Zeds with one hair upon their heads.) Children today will be as entranced by these ridiculous rhymes as they have been since the book's original publication in 1960--so amused and enchanted, in fact, they may not even notice they are learning to read! 4-0 out of 5 stars A review of the Vinyl Bath Book edition only!
Since my 7-month-old still thinks books are for putting in your mouth, I've been buying him bath books. I bought this one sight unseen from Amazon, and as much as I love the classic "One Fish, Two Fish," I was a little disappointed. First, the book is small, even for a bath book (about 4x6 inches -- the "8.3 x 4.8" dimensions in the Amazon description are just plain WRONG). Second, the book was shorter than I expected. It consists only of the first 8 pages of the original "One Fish." Of course, the baby doesn't know how abridged the book is, so he enjoys it. And the colors are bright, the printing is sharp, and the overall package is high-quality and holds up to lots of handling. But there's not much there to read to him.

A Critical Essay about Peter and the Starcatchers .
5-0 out of 5 stars Peter has a devil of a time . . .
Ever wished the cocky look was washed off Peter's face just once, even though you like him and you'd never want the cockiness completely gone? I always felt that way just a smidge while reading the original Peter Pan and found the first book in this series relieved that itch just a bit. It was like Peter Pan, only more humananized and real. And FUNNY!

Ahem. Has anyone noticed that one of the one-star reviews for this book burns Lemony Snicket and William Shakespeare at the same time? If I was you, L.S., be honored! "Oh, gee, you're categorizing me in the same place as one of the most revered and adored authors of all time?!! I think I'll take that as a compliment!" This book is the second best in the series so far, after The Slippery Slope.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Wait For Two More Years!!!
The books are amazing.J.K. Rowling managed to create a magical world that is both appealing to children and adults. The books follow the heroic life of young Harry Potter from age 11.As Harry gets older, the books mature with him. While the first book is very colorful and innocent, books five and six are much darker and emotional, of which love becomes a major theme in the series.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good value
Our family hadn't yet read all the books, and we were looking for a set. This is a good value. However, with book 7 coming out soon, we are regretting not waiting to get the inevitable 7-book set.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Value
I'm not going to address the quality of the Harry Potter series. After all, if you weren't interested in the plots and storylines, you wouldn't be considering this item. What I will address is the fact that this collection is, hands down, the best value on the first six books of the series you will find, period! (Price at time of writing was $100) I'm a member of several book associations, and even they cannot match it. The books themselves are hardback, with excellent quality paper and high production value. The jackets all show the colorful illustrations of Mary Grandpré, and have raised lettering. The bindings themselves are library quality, and durable, with metallic lettering on the spine. It was a must have for my hardback Fantasy library and collection and, though most of my books for it have been obtained via a SFBC membership, Amazon definitely provided the best value on this one! ... In the style of their 2004 publication, "The DC Comics Encyclopedia," Dorling Kindersley have released "The Marvel Encyclopedia," a guide to the characters of the Marvel Comics universe. DK are no strangers to Marvel's universe, having frequently released "Ultimate Guide" books covering the histories of Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Hulk, the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and next year, Ghost Rider. But how does this tome, touted as "the definitive guide," stack up?

3-0 out of 5 stars whathappenedtomaps?
This American History book is a very good, but not excellentcoverage of the History of the United States. The book istypical entry level college material. Historical information is either very interesting with good detail to boring and vague.Photographs, portraits, paintings, charts, and illustrations are abundant and beautiful helping to keep interest level moving. However, the book rapidly sheds its allure and interest. That is because it fails to deliver on providing enough, interesting and neccessary political and war detail maps associated with important major historical events.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Book of All Time
Wow. Where do I begin?
5-0 out of 5 stars A rich, complex and vastly entertaining read
My college-age cousin told me about this book back in the summer as I was visting during vacation. I had a few books in my car (and some I told her about), but she insisted: this was an extraordinary read. That I simply had to put everything else aside and read it.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE BOOK THIEF
Liesel Meminger, a German girl in the 1940's, survives the vicissitudes of war through two forces: the power of love and the power of words. At her younger brother's funeral, she steals The Gravedigger's Handbook as a remembrance of him. Her foster father quells her nightmares by teaching her to read, and she soon discovers that books soothe the soul. When her family hides a Jew in their basement, the young man writes to survive, often aiming his words directly at Leisel.Ultimately, it is the strength of her relationships and the reading and writing they inspire that save her life, spiritually and literally.

Very contempory with updated word list and the extra photos, diagrams, etc. etc. etc. make this a fine choice for kids of all ages from 2 to 92.I am especially happy they included the 'hoopoe' in the bird category. We have many here in Thailand where I live.

5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful
My daughters are in the third grade and, we have found this dictionary to be very helpful. It is bright and colorful but, it contains quite a bit of information as well. It helps them not only when they are writing something (to look up the spelling of a word) but also to understand the meaning of words. It gives parts of speech, different tenses, and pronunciation of the word as well. I highly recommend it for anyone looking to buy a dictionary for children. I had bought the Scholastic First Dictionary also but, honestly, we did not use that one much at all. The Children's Dictionary is my pick, for sure.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a Good buy
It is a nice audio book.It does have it's flaws though.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, and well worth the money!
I am not a "Total Ringophile", like some out there, but I have read the books three times and loved them. I lashed out and purchased this 46 CD set as I spend a lot of time on the commute to work. It is brilliant! Each CD has approx 15 "tracks" on it so that if you miss a bit as your mind wanders (as it does in the car..) you can just bounce back one track and hear that bit again, no problems. Rob Inglis does a great job, no question. It has added a new dimension to my experince of Tolkien's masterpiece, and I highly recommend it to all. BRILLIANT !

5-0 out of 5 stars Ingles does a fantastic job
I did not realize what a wonderful job that Ingles had done in this reading until I began listening to other audio books. Ingles manages to give each character a distinct voice and as you proceed, you recognize immediately who it is that is speaking.

Editorial Review

Everyone in town thinks Meg Murry is volatile and dull-witted, and that her younger brother, Charles Wallace, is dumb. People are also saying that their physicist father has run off and left their brilliant scientist mother.Spurred on by these rumors and an unearthly stranger, the tesseract-touting Mrs Whatsit, Meg and Charles Wallace and their new friend Calvin O'Keefe embark on a perilous quest through space to find their father. In doing so, they must travel behind the shadow of an evil power that is darkening the cosmos, one planet at a time. This is no superhero tale, nor is it science fiction, although it shares elements of both. The travelers must rely on their individual and collective strengths, delving deep within themselves to find answers.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable by young and old alike!
The earth is surrounded by a sinister presence - a dark, foul fog that is the tool of an ultimate evil - whose ambition is to enslave the planet with the complete removal of free will. Three magical beings, Mrs Whatsit, Mrs Who and Mrs Which - witches, angels, demigods perhaps - appear to Margaret and Charles Wallace Murry and their friend, Calvin O'Keefe, to persuade them that it is their destiny to battle this evil on its own turf and to rescue Margaret and Charles Wallace's father. Dr Murry has been missing for some months and the kids learn that he has been captured by the evil while he was "tessering", traveling time and space in the course of his scientific research.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book!
I have been reading books since I was 2 years old and this is one of the best books i have read. It dosn't matter who the auther is or how old he is it just matters if you like the book. I'm 12 now and like I said this book is really, really good. The authur did A good job and that is why it is a new york times best seller!
5-0 out of 5 stars Eragon the best
Eragon is one of the best fantasy books I've ever read so far.It has all of the qualities of a fantasy book I look for.Compared to Harry Potter it has a great story line with a quick learning character. It has battles, magic, dragons, and monstrous creatures.Christopher Paolini is one of the best authors I've heard of, because he uses great imagery, awesome descriptions, and he keeps you intrigued through the whole book.I recommend this book to any fantasy lover adult, teen, or child.I do understand that this is one of the best accomplishments among someone of young age. So if you love fantasy or you just want a classic in motion take up Eragon.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worthy of the hype!
I purchased and read this book just after it first came out to rave reviews and a New York Times Bestseller ranking.I was extremely dissappointed. There is a reason that there are not many well renowned 18 year old authors out there. The writing is poor at best - definitely the work of someone who is just learning the art.The story is entertaining at times, but as many other reviewers have mentioned, it is entirely unoriginal. This book is fine for the younger child but is not in the class of Paul Park's Princess of Roumania, The Golden Compass trilogy or Harry Potter as books that transcend the line between children's and adult literature.I did not read the second book and have no intention of doing so. ... Editorial Review

The 26 characters in this rhythmic, rhyming baby book are a lowercase alphabet with attitude. "A told b, and b told c, 'I'll meet you at the top of the coconut tree'"--which probably seemed like a good idea until the other 23 members of the gang decided to follow suit. Lois Ehlert's chunky block illustrations show the luxuriant green palm standing straight and tall on the first page, but it begins to groan and bend under its alphabetical burden. First the coconuts fall off, then ("Chicka chicka...BOOM! BOOM!") all the letters also end up in a big heap underneath. A very simple board-book version stops there, but this original text goes on to introduce the helping hands of the 26 uppercase "mamas and papas and uncles and aunts." (Baby to preschool) Read more

I read this to my preschoolers almost everyday. They call it the Coconut Book. They're learning the alphabet, identifying letters, andbuilding their vocabulary.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book
I first read this to my son when he was one and a half months old.He smiled and (almost) laughed, he liked it so much.Amazing that a book can do that to a child at that age.He still loves it, and you'll be amazed how quickly you learn to recite it by memory. It comes in handy all the time -- waiting in the doctor's office, riding in the car, anytime he starts to fuss. And it doesn't matter if I don't even have the book around -- I just say it and the words capture his attention.Excellent.

I plan on purchasing this book some day. I think it will be a fun book for my daughter(s) to read when they're a little older (my oldest girl is three). The book is fun, easy to read and very enjoyable. This book contains everything, action, innocent teenage romance, drama and intrigue.

Editorial Review

"Softly he brushed my cheek, then held my face between his marble hands. 'Be very still,' he whispered, as if I wasn't already frozen. Slowly, never moving his eyes from mine, he leaned toward me. Then abruptly, but very gently, he rested his cold cheek against the hollow at the base of my throat." Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I have ever read!!!
You have found the love of your life. The catch? He's a vampire, thirsting for your blood. When Bella moves from sunny Phoenix to dreary forks, her mood is anything but happy. Then she meets Edward Cullen. He's not one of those coffin-sleeping, afraid of onions, sucking you dry type of vampire. He and his family are more civilized, preying on wild animals. Their family is different, having abilities such as reading people's minds (Edward's ability) and seeing the future (Alice's ability). They fall in love. Everything is wonderful until they invite Bella to play baseball, vampire-style. A nomad band of vampires hears them and wants to join. Once they realize that Bella is human, they want her blood. While Edward, his brother Emmett and his sister Rosalie, along with his mother Esme and his father Carlisle try to hunt the band of vampires, Alice, Edward's sister, and Jasper, Edward's brother, take Bella to Phoenix to get the band off her scent. While in Phoenix, Edward calls them to tell them that the band was lost, but Bella already knows that, the leader called her and told her that he had her mother and was going to kill her if she did not come. She runs away, and meets him at her mom's house. He tells her that he tricked her and that he did not have her mom. He starts to kill her, and he knocks her out in the process. She wakes up in Edward's arms, bleeding all over the place. He, the leader, broke her leg, smashed open her skull, and bit her. Edward has to suck out the poison, and saves her life. When she wakes up, she is in the hospital, with a very well thought out story about her injuries, with her mother by her side. When she recovers, Edward's family and Bella go home, just in time for the prom. Edward takes Bella, against her will, and Bella asks Edward why didn't he just let the poison take place, then they could be together forever. Edward pushes that thought out of her mind and together they dance, with that thought that they can really never be together. This book is so good; I recommend it to every one. This is my new favorite book, it is that good.
5-0 out of 5 stars Move over Heathcliff and Cathy-Bella and Edward are here to stay
Meyer was not joking when she said she loved Edward Cullen, the main character of her debut novel, "Twilight" at the National Book Fest. Not joking, because every word she's written about him has single-handedly gone to create the perfect angst-ridden, marble shrouded vampire teen; that at 17 was "turned" on his deathbed during the Spanish influenza pandemic.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and Wonderful... A Delight to Read
Even though this book has a simple plot, and repeats the themes of many, many other works, it somehow hits an important romantic chord. I was thrilled to read a book where Vampires have dignity and a conscience (expecially after reading one of Laurell K. Hamilton's sordid novels) and even though, as a young adult novel, it was sweet and innocent it was still beautiful. Definately worth the time, and I would love to see more books from this author - maybe even venturing into the adult section at some point. ... Read more

Editorial Review

"One night, after thinking it over for some time, Harold decided to go for a walk in the moonlight." So begins this gentle story that shows just how far your imagination can take you.Armed only with an oversized purple crayon, young Harold draws himself a landscape full of beauty and excitement. But this is no hare-brained, impulsive flight of fantasy. Cherubic, round-headed Harold conducts his adventure with the utmost prudence, letting his imagination run free, but keeping his wits about him all the while. He takes the necessary purple-crayon precautions: drawing landmarks to ensure he won't get lost; sketching a boat when he finds himself in deep water; and creating a purple pie picnic when he feels the first pangs of hunger.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars bring your imagination
If you have a small child who is not crazy about books, try this one.I have yet to read it to a kindergarten class who was not enthralled with it. Harold is a delight for young and old.He is lovable and at the same time all-powerful, wielding his purple crayon as he chooses. This is a classic no family should be without.

5-0 out of 5 stars "And the moon went with him."
This is a book of such simplicity, both in its words and its illustrations, that one may dismiss it at first glance. Don't! Harold and the Purple Crayon is a magical book. Its popularity may have waned since its original publication over 50 years ago, but it has such enduring charm. Harold has such a wonderful imagination, and in his hands the purple crayon does incredible things. If you've never read this book, please join Harold on his journey. I can't imagine you'll be disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Harold - fifty years on!
I bought this fiftieth edition for my daughter because it was one of her favourite books when she was young. She is twenty-five now and the old book is falling to pieces and still has her added drawings in it. She was very happy with the new shiny copy, even though the original was smaller in size. ...
