Editorial Review

"Monster" is what the prosecutor called 16-year-old Steve Harmon for his supposed role in the fatal shooting of a convenience-store owner. But was Steve really the lookout who gave the "all clear" to the murderer, or was he just in the wrong place at the wrong time? In this innovative novel by Walter Dean Myers, the reader becomes both juror and witness during the trial of Steve's life. To calm his nerves as he sits in the courtroom, aspiring filmmaker Steve chronicles the proceedings in movie script format.Interspersed throughout his screenplay are journal writings that provide insight into Steve's life before the murder and his feelings about being held in prison during the trial. "They take away your shoelaces and your belt so you can't kill yourself no matter how bad it is. I guess making you live is part of the punishment."Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Monster is scary, not in a great way
I found that the story was too fast paced for something as dramatic as a 16 year old boy on trial for murder. The settings changed too quickly at the beginning, and I found the plot kind of confusing. The plot though, was believable and realistic, and there was very little profanity, if any.The language was not coated with heavy accents, the closest it got was gangsta talk. The point of view was from Steve Harmon, and there was a fair share of the plot jumping around. The characters were very real, and you could really picture it in your mind.Sadly, I could not say this for much of this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Is He Truly A Monster?
I'm not going to say much about the text in the book except that it was well written and well thought out. The format of the book was nicely put, because it is easy to read when the words aren't crammed together on a small page, and I liked how it was written in a script format.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazon book review by Karen
Monster by Walter Dean Myers was an excellent book. This book was about Steve Harmon. He was accused of being part of a robbery during which Mr. Nesbit was murdered. The book really puts the reader inside Steve's mind and emotions; the reader really hopes that Steve gets off trial and is let go without any charges.

the book was interesting, adventurious, educational and it has helped me with my writing.I also thought it was a bit humorous and exciting. I think its good book for high school students to learn to write analize stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Elements of Literature highly rated by English teachers
This is the premier textbook for English classes today. It is an excellent selection of plays, short stories and non-fiction. I have seen a copy of most literature textbooks on the market today, and this is the best. The selections are great, and they are tied to basic literary concepts which all students need to know. The questions and assignment suggestions are creative and encourage critical thinking. As an English teacher, I rate it an A+. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective and Relaxing
The belly breathing, affirmations, relaxation get my kids calm! The four stories are just the right length to keep their attention and get them to do actual stressmanagement techniques. The author never tells the children what to do or that they are being taught. The kids just follow the stories and characters along and learn to manage their own anxiety with actual techniques.
1-0 out of 5 stars SAVE YOUR MONEY
I purchased this cd for my four year old a few months ago and disliked it enough to bother to write my first review of anything i've ever ordered through the internet."Bedtime stories" is a misnomer. There is no story content. After the first few lines read by the narrator, I found that her unnaturally slow, moronic verse didn't have a relaxing or somnulent effect but did, ironically, irritate me.I sat quietly listenting to the cd until my daughter asked me to turn it off-- only a few minutes into the cd.I skipped through the cd to see if it got better-- it did not. I suppose the point is to bore the child to sleep, but neither I nor my daughter could bear to listen to the "stories."This was the first item that I've ever puchased on-line for which i felt truly RIPPED-OFF.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK PROVES LEARNING NEED NOT BE PAINFUL
This is truely a funny book. It, as the title states, a diary of a spider, a young spider. It reveal the world as might be seen through the eyes of a spider. Not only it is actually funny, it is just chucked full of very interesting facts about spiders.A child learns a lot about these little critters that are all around us and learns while enjoying a good read and some very nice art work. This books is also a fun one to read with your child.Unlike so many children's books, this one is fun for the adult too.I like the way the author has given our hero spider a rather quirky outlook on life. There are many lesson to learn from reading this book, all interesting, all of the important.I cannot recommend this one highly enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Incredible
I was in awe when my son received the Dinosaur book for Christmas from his Grandfather. I saw this book in a Parents magazine and had to get it based on the fact that the Dino one was incredible. My 3 year old loves it! It's not a book to let him play with unless you want it destroyed. Instead, this book allows us to make some quality time for each other when we sit down and look through it. It's very informational, and as he grows older I'm sure he'll read it, but at this point the pop-ups are worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars My son loves the book
This is a very interesting book.My 5-year old has really enjoyed the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece of Pop-up books.
A Great Book to Read With the Kid on your lap. Probably best for kids in the couple or three grades. Best for kids on your lap because pop-up books are rather fragile. Grabbing the nose of the shark and using it as a handle to lug the book around is likely to lose the nose to your shark.

Editorial Review

An affectionate, sometimes bashful pig named Wilbur befriends a spider named Charlotte, who lives in the rafters above his pen. A prancing, playful bloke, Wilbur is devastated when he learns of the destiny that befalls all those of porcine persuasion. Determined to save her friend, Charlotte spins a web that reads "Some Pig," convincing the farmer and surrounding community that Wilbur is no ordinary animal and should be saved. In this story of friendship, hardship, and the passing on into time, E.B. White reminds us to open our eyes to the wonder and miracle often found in the simplest of things. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine work of literature that can stand alongside any in English
I just reread it recently as an adult. I had this boxed set of three hardcover E.B. White books when I was a kid - Charlotte's Web, The Trumpet of the Swan (which I remember as my favorite of the three, though I hardly remember it today), and Stuart Little.
5-0 out of 5 stars Charlotte's Web
I've purchased this book for my daughter who is almost 9 years old, I end up reading it before her. This book is great for growing up kids; how wonderful and variable it is to have a friend he/she can depend on and be with to share fun, sad and so so stories to one another.
4-0 out of 5 stars A classic, and for a good reason
This book, though it may seem to be just a cute story about a pig, is actually quite sad.The first time I read this book I was in first grade and I liked it, but it was only when I just recently read it again that I realized how good it really is. This book, through its simple plot, reminded me a lot about how selfless some people are and also about growing up.No wonder it's a classic; even though it's written for little kids, it can remind a lot of people about their own lives and bring back a lot of fond memories. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to chapter books for pre-k age
We actually picked up a four of the Magic Tree House books to give chapter books a try with our 4 year old. He absolutely is enthralled with these. We have already returned to the book store twice for a total of 8 more and I'm sure we will be going back for more.
4-0 out of 5 stars Son received as a b-day present
When he got the first boxed set for his birthday, he wasn't too enthused by it. Up to that point, him reading on his own was like trying to pull teeth. So I bribed him by saying for every book he read, I would give him a dollar.
5-0 out of 5 stars Magic Tree House (Volumes 1-4)
This was a gift for my granddaughter. My daughter writes: "Suspenseful . . . interesting.Erin can't wait for each chapter. With other books she falls asleep while I read;with these books she asks me to stop so she doesn't miss anything. We are reading no. 5 'Night of the Ninjas' and recently saw a samari suit in the museum (where Andy Warhol is showing) and there are Samari in this book.As a parent I wish there was a little more history in each book, but I think they are age appropriate."

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS JUST A WONDERFUL BOOK
and it leaves you feeling so darned good after you read it.The main characters, Owen, a baby hippo, and Mzee, a 130 year old Aldabra tortoise, form a remarkably close bond which continues to this day (and can be followed in their caretaker's diary on the website of Laforge Ecosystems, that lost nearly 250 employees in the December 16, 2004 tsunami, and which contributed to Owen's washing up on a coral reef in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Malindi, Kenya).

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read for Christians
I've been a Christian for years and have always felt that something was "missing" from the American church.Rob Bell's insights have helped my faith feel more real than ever before. This is much better than the religion I've been sold my whole life.I enjoyed the fact that I didn't necessarily agree with everything in the book and that was okay - I was challenged to think some things through.Read this book.Let me say it one more time: read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Base for Jumping Off Into "Real" Christian Faith
Before reviewing the content, I think it is important to note that the covers of the paperback copies I've seen of this all seem to scratch easily. So if you care about the aesthetics of the book, pay the few extra dollars and get the hardback. That being said, here it is:
2-0 out of 5 stars Hard to know what to make of it
American pastor Rob Bell is a leader in the Emerging Church movement, and this book seeks to apply the principles of postmodernism to the contemporary church. The result is a mixed bag. Much of the book is simply a call to love Jesus more, to rediscover the wonder and mystery of the faith. As such, it is just another book on Christian living, and cannot really be faulted. But it is the over-reliance on the postmodernist framework that is cause for concern.

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic teen read
I never knew that this book was by a ghostwriter.I loved it even though it was alittle crazy with the whole blair and nate and I wanna be bonnie and clyde thing.
2-0 out of 5 stars Desperate, sucky, bad plot, and desperate is the recipie for the worst Gossip Girl book.
I was VERY dissapointed in this Gossip Girl book. It made me mad when I read the previous reveiws on the last book, saying that she had a ghost writer. Why I was mad, I have no idea. But, while first reading this book I was looking for hints that Cicly did not write this.
3-0 out of 5 stars Here's the Wierd Thing
I've been reading the GG series since book 3 came out, and well, I hate all the characters, and their choices, but can't seem to stay away. It's just because the books are exceptionally well written for what is basically trash fiction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Little Bible
I love this Bible - it is great for children. It reminds me of the book "Now I Know the Ten Commandments". I recommend it to anyone.
5-0 out of 5 stars the Bible I grew up with
This is the Bible both my sister and I owned into our teen years.A great way to introduce your children to studying the bible on their own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adventure Bible, Revised, NIV
As Christian Ed Coordinator at our church, I have purchased these Bibles for our students going into 3rd grade for the past 8 years. They are kid friendly, and have wonderful little sidebar items that are helpful to both the students and the teachers in the elementary Sunday School classes.Amazon's price, even with shipping, beat my local suppliers hands down. Thanks, Amazon, for helping out.I'll definitely be a repeat customer when I have to order more Bibles!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
My son just finished the Kindergarten program which we broke into approximately 15 lessons (each lesson ranging from 30 - 60 minutes) over a couple of months (it can certainly be accomplished quicker). The CD leads you through the workbook and provides all of the phonetics to assist you and your child. The lessons in the beginning took longer than the book describes but once my son got the hang of it the lessons went quicker. The flash cards with helper words are a fun game to interact with your child. The short stories and books were enjoyable for my son and helped him feel a sense of accomplishment when he earned a sticker on the progress chart. My son used the computer game on his own and it reinforced the concepts we worked on together during the lessons. This program helped introduce him to reading, sounds, comprehending the story, and he was more confident when reading and when sight words were introduced in his Kindergarten class. We both are looking forward to the 1st grade level product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent program and a great value
We got this program after trying Teach Your Child To Read in 100 EZ Lessons and found that Hooked on Phonics Kindergarten was a much better program for our daughter.Hooked on Phonics K comes with a workbook, several audio CD's, MANY easy reader books, flashcards, and a computer CD.It also comes with a sticker chart where the child can track each new book that they read.

Editorial Review

We hold this truth to be self-evident: farting makes kids laugh. Walter,an apologetic-looking dog adopted from the pound, passes gas morning, noon, and night, no matter what he eats, whether it's a 25-pound bag oflow-fart dog biscuits, cat food, or fried chicken. On the bright side,"If Uncle Irv let one slip, he just went and stood near Walter." WhenFather reaches the limit of his patience with Walter's flatulence, hedecides the pooch is once again pound-bound, despite Betty and Billy'spleading. Poor Walter knows his days are numbered and "He resolved tohold in his farts forever." That very night, two burglars break intoWalter's family's house, and (you can see where this is going) Waltergasses the burglars with a "hideous cloud" that forces them to droptheir loot and run into the clutches of the police officers, "chokingand gasping for air." The next morning Father and Mother discoverWalter has saved the day--or at least their silverware andVCR. "And so the family learned to live with Walter, the hero dog. Andthat is the end of our tail." (Or is it? Fans will be pleased todiscover the next book Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars ripping off Dav Pilkey
This book was terrible, because it is a rip-off of "Dog Breath:The Horrible Tale of Hally Tosis" by Dav Pikley, which came out in 1994!The only difference is that Walter farts while Hally has bad breath. In both stories, the terrible smell prompts families to give the dogs away, and nothing they try gets rid of the terrible odors. In both books, the burgulars break in to the family homes, and are deterred by the animals' bad smell, and the dog saves the day.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hysterically pleasing.
I bought this book to read to my family over holiday break and sat down with little kids, friends, grandparents and parents present. Not only did I have trouble reading it without snorting but my grandmother almost peed her pants laughing so hard. Acceptance is the only lesson you will get out of this book. This book was written for humor only. If you've ever owned a dog, you know most of this book is exaggeratingly true. Great for all ages. Strange, yet intriguing illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars FUNNY
As an adult with a dog with a similar problem, I loved this book.I laughed from the first page to the last.Everyone with a sense of humor will love this book.Kids will get a big kick out of it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Distinguished Mystery Book(siobhan fitzgerald, age 11)
Flush is a mystery book that I would highly recomend for younge readers. Dusty Muleman, is the criminal who is supposidley dumping sewage into the many waters of Thunder Beach to save money. This book also includes fantastic thrills to were Abbey and Noah Underwood come into close incounters of being caught while full filling thier full proof plan. They also have a couple of former crew members to help them capture the crook and save the beach for both wildlife, and themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hiaasen is fun and fast!
Flush takes place in Florida. Noah Underwood, the main character, is trying to catch Dusty in the act of dumping his casino boat's waste in the water. HIs father knows that Dusty is doing this, so he sunk the boat. Pane Underwood (Noah's father) goes to jail for sinking the boat. This book is hysterical, a must-read, can't-put-down!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
