5-0 out of 5 stars it sounds like this
Here's the thing about Sarah Dessen. She lets us in.Into these lives of characters who share their pain with us so intensely it's like you already know them. And you want to help them finally be the people they want to be, even if they don't know it yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is amazing.
I really loved this book as I do her others as well including: The Truth About Forever, This Lullaby, Dreamland, Someone Like You, and That Summer. She is a truly amazing writer that indulges so deeply into the subconscience of the main character and shows you the journey that they have to go through to grow, learn, develope, and share. Each book always reminds me something in my own life and is therefore easy to relate to.Her books are not only for young adults but for adults especially women who have children or don't because anyone can relate to these stories of growing up.She is a truly inspirational writer and this was a great book.I couldn't put it down and read it in 4 and a half hours. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars KIds love it
I bought this on a whim because my children love dinosaurs right now (just like all kids I guess). It's become a bedtime favorite of theirs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Dinosaur Lovers.
My son loves these books. He laughs and giggles the whole way through. The fact that she puts all the names of the dinosaurs hidden in the pictures for the parents to see is great. It gives me an answer for the inevitable "what kind is that one, mom?"
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I was worried these board books wouldn't be as good as the large hard cover Dinosaur books, but they are just as charming. The illustrations are great. They are about half as long though. My 3 1/2 yr old loves all the Yolen dinosaur books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ...a spooktacular tale featuring some tricks, and quite a few treats...
It's a known fact that whenever there's trouble, the six Herdman kids are behind it. Lose a pair of pants? It's the Herdmans. Find your window broken? The Herdmans are behind it. Find yourself painted green? Blame the Herdmans. It never gets old. Or, at least it never got old before. But this year is different. This year, as everyone is preparing for Halloween, and loading up on candy, the Mayor does something drastic to protect the town from the Herdmans...he cancels Halloween. Sure, without Halloween, the Herdmans are sure to keep their distance from everyone, and cease from stealing the candy that every child has collected. But without the Herman's to contend with, it would also mean that candy is banned for the season. And Halloween just isn't Halloween with a heaping bag full of goodies that will rot your teeth and make you sick. Now, Halloween has turned into a horrible, boring event that will take place at school, with a bunch of parents dressed up as witches and ghouls, ghosts and monsters. Instead of candy, there'll be donuts. Instead of trick-or-treating, there'll be supervised bobbing for apples. This is sure to be the worst Halloween ever, Herdmans or not. But when the lights go off, suddenly everything changes, and everyone begins to wonder whether the Herdmans have what it takes to pull off a spooktacular Halloween that will leave the town cheering.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ghosts and Goblins Delight
While the Herdmans wrecked lots of the town, they manage to disguise themselves to make the most boring school Halloween party the BEST Halloween party when they give all the children a room full of candy.Funny and surprising this book was a ton of fun for a Saturday read.Makes me want to read other stories about the Herdmans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Each character brings a delectable entree to the table that you can't help but gobble up with a silver spoon
When Jenny Humphrey arrived at Waverly Academy, the Waverly Owls had one thing on their minds, discussing the new girl and her voluptuous body. Jenny, on the other hand, had something quite different on her mind, creating a reputation for herself entirely different from the one she had earned back in Manhattan. Here in Upstate New York, the petite sophomore has managed to catch the eye of three of the hottest guys on campus, kissed two of them - quite passionately, I might add - and had the privilege of making one of them her boyfriend: the artistic, adorable, oft-times brooding, Easy Walsh. The Kentucky-native is just the type of guy Jenny has always wanted, and Easy can't keep his eyes off her. Too bad his eyes should have been on someone else - namely, his girlfriend, the waif-like, shopaholic Callie Vernon. Soon the ultra-powerful Tinsley Carmichael was informing Callie that their sweet-faced, city girl new roommate was nothing more than a manipulative tramp who was using Callie to get to Easy; even though Tinsley was guilty of something much worse: stealing the scrumptious Mr. Dalton out of Brett Messerschmidt's perky clutches just to spite her. Now war has been declared. Callie and Tinsley against Brett and Jenny. But when the two groups are split up against enemy lines - Callie and Jenny in Dumbbarton 303, and Brett and Tinsley living just downstairs - conflicts will seemingly come to a head. For suddenly, everything is about to change. Tinsley's dirty laundry is about to be aired for the world to know. And when Easy comes searching for Jenny, and stumbles upon Callie, some scandalous activity will occur that will leave someone in tears. With the entire Waverly student body waiting in the wings for something juicy to happen, everyone knows something will - it's just a matter of which girl will come out on top and claim the title of IT.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Completes
When I first reviewed The Giver years ago, I loved it.Until I got to the end.It felt woefully incomplete. It wasn't simply that the reader was required to imagine possibilities. It felt like the author hadn't finished showing us her theme. Now she has with this sequel, and I only wish I could go back to increase the stars on The Giver, for the sequel has pulled up that book as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gathering Blue
Kira is a child that is left with no family. Her mother now gone and taken to the field, with nowhere to live and no one to take care of her. Many people wouldn't mind if Kira and her twisted leg were left in the field to die. People thought that she was no good and couldn't do anything for the community. One of the women of the community had taken her land and made it into a place for their small children. These same women didn't agree that Kira should stay; she had gone to the Council of Guardians with the situation.

4-0 out of 5 stars INCANTATION
The burning of Jewish books in the town square is the first portent that life for sixteen-year-old Estrella is going to change.Set in Spain during the Middle Ages, the story is about secrets and self-knowledge.Estrella's family are Conversos, who practice Judaism in secret at home and in a church where all of the congregation plus the priest are like themselves. As the persecution of Jews draws ever closer to Estrella's own family, she is told about their secret, given a ring to buy herself safe passage to Amsterdam if need be, and taught the rudiments of kabbalah by her learned grandfather. This unlikely act is undoubtedly a gesture toward the current popularity of kabbalah and it does little to mar the credibility of the plot, consisting only of a few "kabbalistic" customs like wearing a red thread and learning the names of the ten gates of Paradise.More central to the story is Estrella/Esther's development from a carefree girl to a young woman fated to pass on her family's heritage virtually alone. As in other of Hoffman's books, nature and magic are intertwined.Estrella's mother is a dyer and a healer; her grandfather is a surgeon and a scholar. The witchcraft of which they are accused is practical magic, the kind that works not through the supernatural but through knowledge heightened by insight.Throughout the book, Estrella's mother teaches her about the natural world and how humans use it for good or evil. At the conclusion, after some horrific scenes of torture and burnings, she flees, having learned that "a Jew can never be attached to a place...We cannot have roots in the earth of any country, only in the garden that we carry inside us."This is a somber message for the teens of today and it is offset by other conflicts that they may find more appealing: the true nature of a false friend, and rivalry over a boy friend.Admirers of Alice Hoffman will enjoy her evocative writing style but Incantation is one of her lesser works. For teens and adults.Reviewed by Linda R. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Way to Prepare an Older Sibling!
I bought this book for a friend that's pregnant and has a little boy that will be 3 when new baby comes.I looked thru the book when I got it and loved the idea of no words. This way they can fit their wording into their lifestyle that best fits them. They can put in their own names and family names and all with this book along with gender.I love the whole book especially the end where the parents along with the bigger sibling tuck the baby into bed. Then, the parents have their night time reading with the bigger sibling who can stay up later! In my house, that is definitely how it works!!It makes my 4 year old feel big and prevents jealousy!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
And so does my two-year old son!It shows all the things that will happen with the baby and his big brother (my chosen genders). It even shows mom nursing which is a very big part of newborn life and I'm glad the author addresses it!And dad changes diapers too.I really like both of the books in this series and we got them both. They are favorites in this house!

5-0 out of 5 stars My 17 month-old loves this book, and so do I
My daughter particularly enjoys looking at books with pictures but no words right now: I tell the story and we discuss the pictures. She brings me this book and says, "Baby!"She really enjoys pointing to the baby and pointing out other objects in each picture (bunny, ball, snake doll, frog doll, bathtub, duck, etc.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Witness by Karen Hesse
The white-hooded knights of the fiery cross have been the subject of a lot of research, some focusing on the influence of religion, socialism, and Christian Socialism in the group and in government. Much of the work expresses worries of a future filled with religious persecution and totalitarianism. Those worries have relevance to the enormous size and scope of government in the USA and its growing police state.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good read
This is a really good book.As I was reading this book I felt as if I was in the Vermont town. It showed me that not everyone agreed with the ku klux klan and that they sometimes they had to had to join even though they really didn't agree.

4-0 out of 5 stars A lyrical book with much depth = this one!
While the Ku-Klux-Klan swarmed around the small town in Vermont in 1924, Leonora Sutter and Esther Hirsh and their families were focusing on staying alive. Witness is a book that puts the lives of these two girls as well as the nine other characters in the book into perspective. Leonora Sutter and her family are African Americans and Esther and her father are Jewish. These two characters have the greatest impact on the perspective of those against the Klan at that time. The book puts across a point of view from the different characters that you wouldn't usually think of. It is a very well written book and has many memorable characteristics to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for kids!
This is a fabulous book on autism acceptance. This is great for teachers or parents that want their kids to better understand someone that is "different" than the others. It is well written and really presents a creative way of introducing Autism and other spectrum disorders to kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have.
I purchased this book after reading the reviews. Our seven year old son is on the Autism Spectrum and his daycare friends had lots of questions about his behaviors and his limited language skills.I brought this book in for the teacher to read. The comment from the teacher was "They got it."

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best book for Kids to Understand
I bought this book for my sons K-1 class. The book explains what autism is on a level for young children to understand and the kids loved the coloring aspect of it. His teacher loved the adult explainations of each page. My 8 year old borrowed the book to read to his 2nd grade class so that they could understand his brother! I read this book to my Introdution to Early Childhood class and my teacher agreed, this book should be purchased. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone whose child is going into a different learning environment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A story that appeals to both genders
My daughter had to read Bud, Not Buddy for school and dismissed it as a "boy book."This one, however, she liked, even with a male protagonist.I understand another reader's concern that it started out slowly.Asian culture is one of subtlety, and the gentle beginning was a necessary set-up for the various relationships that develop.Much of these relationships are layers of things left unsaid, such as the daily filling of the food bowl and the fishing for flounder.Tree Ear's humility and discipline were admirable (I had to remind myself he was only 12).My daughter (grade 5) liked his bravery and determination.Every story he hears, every dream he has, every snippet of conversation is relevant to the story. It's a tight package of wonderful writing.Linguistically, it stands above much of the other children's literature that I've been reading over the years. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite book!!!!
Rumble fish tells the tale of Rusty-james, a 14 year old tough kid who enjoys keeping up his bad rep and wants more than anything in the world to be like his brother, The Mortercycle Boy. The Motercycle Boy is the coolest guy in town, the leader of the gangs, and a mystery to all. Smart, eye catching, and tough; the Motercyle Boy is everything Rusty-James has ever dreamt of being. The only problem is, Rusty-james isn't quite as bright as his brother. He is more bronze than brains and rather reckless. Also he is incapable of understanding The Motercycle Boy and u can't help wondering... is being The Motercycle Boy really as great as Rusty-James thinks it is?

And certainly--from that adult perspective--there's something off-putting about the illustrations of David, with his potato head, feral eyes, and a maniacal grin that exposes ferociously pointed teeth. But 3- and 4-year-olds see things differently, and will find his relentless badness both funny and liberating."No, David," wails the off-stage mother, as David reaches for the cookie jar. "No! No! No!" as he makes a swamp out of the bathroom. "Come back here, David!" as he runs naked down the street. Each vivid double-page illustration is devoted to a different youthful indiscretion and a different vain parental plea. Readers will be amused to know that the protagonist's name is no accident: award-winning writer-illustrator David Shannon wrote the book after discovering a similar effort that he had made, again with himself at the center of each drawing, at the age of 5. 5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, David, I love you
I don't know why my sixteen-month old daugter loves this book.Perhaps it's the repetition, or illustrations, or the emphasis with which the phrases are read.I DO know that she now has an insatiable interest in books, uses the word 'no' appropriately, and anticipates the resolution at the end of this and "David Gets in Trouble."
5-0 out of 5 stars It makes my kids laugh with delight, that makes it a five for me
Some reviewers take this stuff way too seriously! The book is hilarious, my kids giggle everytime they read it.And, my three year old can read it, which makes her feel great.David isn't evil, I don't see him portrayed as evil, and if he is, my kids are evil also because lord knows they have done almost everything in there themselves, the lesson is that we love and adore our kids even if they are misbehaving!

5-0 out of 5 stars kids LOVE it
I didn't really get this book at first since there is little writing and just these big, somewhat scary illustrations.Just goes to show you that children's books are FOR CHILDREN, because my kids, 4 and 2, LOVE David. They scream and giggle when they see the bad things he's doing, and throughout the day they will "remind" themselves not to do something "bad like David."They can look at the illustrations and create whole stories out of one page.I think that is what the beauty of the book is truly about. As I started reading it with them, I became charmed by the crude, simple drawings, and just how expressive David is, even though he's not more than a stick figure. The first time we read it, I just read the words on each page.I had to explain one or two pictures, but they completely got the ending themselves. The very next time, I asked them what they thought was going on in each picture and they went crazy telling me all about the things David was doing, and why that's not allowed and what he should be doing instead! They truly never tire of this story, and I wouldn't have guessed that at all when I first picked this title up.Contrary to what some other reviewers said, David doesn't inspire bad behavior or copycat actions. That's the whole point of reading it with them.I don't think some of the other books in the series are as inspired as this first one, but that may just be because I was spoiled by how much we all love this one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I loved it!
I loved this book; it went in really deep and certainly described everything very well. I got addicted to it, and, though, at the very first pages it may seem boring, it kicks into high gear very quickly. Though I may not as old as the book recommendedmeto be, I understood it perfectly well. This is a definite book choice to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great book!
Wow.. I just got this book and wow it took me in like i was there i finish the book in two days i guess i have to get the next book! "Burned" can wait to read that one...

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow
I didn't quite know what to expect. I'd heard very little about it. Crank was, by far, the best book I've read in a LONG while. Sad, but very true to life. The story was so engaging that I couldn't put the book down even once...I stayed up until 2am to finish it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Go ask alice is two thumbs down the drain and into the sewer
Go ask alice is an ok book, i think this is a two star book it has good information about what doing drugs could lead upto.i still think this book has alot of fiction instead of facts just to keep the reader interested.some points of the story are major turnoffs for male reader's because it's really hard to relate to certain problems of the opposite sex.The author of the diary uses all these big words and seems articulate but then again time after time makes alot of dumb decisions.Everyone makes bad decisions, but anyone with enough sense would try to get help or change their lifestlye, also the author cleary isnt an fifteen year old girl.

2-0 out of 5 stars Its authenticity aside--does this even hold up as fiction?
Ok, first things first: I determined that this thing was a hoax when I first read it as a cynical eleven-year-old back in '86 or so: that a homeless, nearly-perpetually-high, hitchhiking-across-the-country-and-borrowing-strangers'-clothing "Alice" would be able to keep track of and catalog (remarkably lucid) journal entries written on random "scraps of bags, envelopes, etc." struck me as ridiculously implausible. Its inauthenticity (and the ethics of continuing to publish it as "nonfiction" aside), though, does this book even hold up as fiction? Just barely. I've always been a huge fan of the first-person narrative, and this book does a decent job of entertaining the reader and making her care--a bit--about the heroine (not just the heroin--heh). Also, that the real author (Beatrice Sparks) was, at least, female is a minor plus. On another note, even if the purported identity of _Go Ask Alice_'s author is fake, its groovy late '60s/early '70s cultural references are certainly the real deal, and, unlike most other YA novels' of its caliber from the same period, this thing is still in print! Educationally speaking, I can imagine holding it up side-by-side with the anti-drug public service announcements (produced by the Lockheed Corporation, etc.) of the same period in a unit on social/cultural American history. ... Bring a tissue! Ms. Chbosky permitts the reader to experience the warm and tender relationship between a young boy and his father then rips your heart out the moment the child learns his father is a slave. One can feel a change in the once beautiful bond as adoration leans toward disgust and his innocence is forever shattered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very moving!
I first experienced this book reading it aloud to my son. I had a very difficult time finishing it because I was so choked up! It was so moving with such beautiful illustrations. I was astounded when I learned that it was written and illustrated by a young girl. I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A touching story of a boy's view of his father

I never cared for that Mutts comic strip in the newspapers.Too cute and not funny.Maybe it's because I'm an adult. And maybe I have no excuse for reading the comics at all at this point.I don't know. But McDonnell's characters and light touch work well in this context, in a kid's book.
5-0 out of 5 stars *** simply enchanting ***
Recommended for anyone, any age, i.e., everyone ~~ Patrick Mc'Donnell's comic-book is a gift that I imagine anyone would want to receive. The Gift of Nothing is warm, crystal clear and gently instructive. It's a little story about giving a very big gift, of the self.
