5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this book. I bought it several years ago for my nephew who was starting kindergarten and he found it interesting and reassuring to know that grown-ups get nervous, too, and that his teacher was probably as nervous about meeting him as he was about meeting her. Now that my own daughter is starting kindergarten, I got the book for her. She loves the illustrations and was surprised and delighted at the end of the story to find out that the teacher was nervous about going to school. I am working on my master's degree in teaching and when I get my own classroom, I intend to read this to my students on the first day. It is a delightful book! I'm surprised by the reviewer who was actually returning the book. I can't imagine how she could possibly be disappointed in it. Yes, it does use the word 'hate' but just in the way an average child might use the word. How many of us have heard our young children say "I hate peas?" - I know I have. This is a great book. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
Funny, cute book with a little twist at the end. Great for going back to school!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Teachers
This book is heartwarming and funny. The kids love it. It's about a teacher who is nervous about the first day of school. I used it to talk about how everyone is nervous the first day, even myself. It can even be revisited when you have a new student. The students love reading it and the other books by this author about the same teacher. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The first day of third grade puts Judy Moody in a mad-face mood. She just knows everyone will come back from summer vacation with word T-shirts, like "Disney World" or "Jamestown: Home of Pocahontas." All Judy has is a plain old no-words T-shirt. She'll have to go to a new classroom, with a new desk, and she won't have an armadillo sticker with her name on it like she did last year. And knowing her luck, she'll end up sitting next to Frank, the boy who eats paste. For breakfast her dad makes eggs with the yellow middle broken, and her younger "bother," Stink, thinks he knows everything now that he's starting second grade. But bad moods never last long with the irrepressible Judy Moody, and before long, her day--and year--look brighter. Mr. Todd assigns the class a "Me" collage, which sets Judy on a lively and hilarious self-exploration over the next few action-packed weeks.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars JUDY MOODY by "ANGLE"
Judy Moody by Mcdonald Megar is a good book! It is about judy moods sometimes they are good and sometimes they are bad. she has iots of adventures. read this book if you like to be amused.

1-0 out of 5 stars This Book is AWFUL, Shallow, DULL!!
I read this book with my daughter after seeing its wonderful reviews. I cannot for the life of me figure out how on god's earth this writing was actually PUBLISHED. Judy Moody (meaning Ms. McDonald) makes Junie B. Jones (Barbara Park)look like Shakespeare! WHo does this author KNOW to have been published by Scholastic? I am flabbergasted at the miserable, monotonous, boring, lifeless characters, plot and developement.I've read HUNDREDS of children's books and I am just puzzeled as to how an editor can let this lady get away with this lifeless and choppy writing chapter after chapter.
4-0 out of 5 stars Rarified
After your young child has devoured his or her fill of "Junie B. Jones" books and has gobbled up the entire "Amber Brown" series without so much as breathing, it can be hard to know where to go next. The answer is a series that I like to consider child-driven.You'll never hear adult praising the magnificence of "Judy Moody" books.Parents don't think to recommend her and educators have entirely missed out on her appearance in their students' hands.Kids, however, request her by name. They ask frantically where the "Judy Moody" books can be found and heaven help you if you're a children's librarian caught not knowing who she is.I, for the longest time, sort of lumped her together with the "Molly Moon" books (which I had also not read).A quick perusal of both was enough to cure me of THAT little quirk. Now when a kid asks me for "Judy Moody" stories, I know they're just looking for books about an average little girl who has some normal adventures and some extraordinary spunk.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book to Own
I accidentally picked this book out for my son (I liked the picture on the front). My son is almost one but my husband and I have read this book to him numerous times. He really enjoys the story and he smiles when he sees Little Owen.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet and Relatable
This book was a great medium to reinforce the message to our son that we love him and are "with him" while he is at school. We also ordered Buddy Bear, My First Day at Preschool (DVD) and Blue Goes to School (book). Each were great! Good luck. The best advice we got was 1) make sure your kid knows you think his school is a great and that you want him to be there and 2) try dropping off and setting short goals: I will come back for snack (30 minutes) then leave again and come back for Yard...etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Cute Little Story
This is my 3 year old sons' favorite book.We have read it so many times that he can recite some of the text with me.This book is a naptime/bedtime tradition in our house. It really engages my son and it calms him right down and gets him ready for sleep.A great buy for any toddler! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I love this book and my kids do too
I received this book as a gift for my children who are in the primary grades. The story resonated with me because I remember tutoring little migrant boys like this when I was in high school, boys who are smart but have trouble in school because of constant moves. My children enjoy this story because they can empathize with his troubles and how he is ultimaately able to outsmart the bullies without using his fists. They enjoy seeing his victory at the end. I like the fact that it builds compassion in them for children who face adversity every day. I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creative Courage - A Great Read
I loved this book.It is a tribute to the human spirit.Children really understand the underlying theme.Beatifully written.

5-0 out of 5 stars First Day in Grapes is First Rate!!!!!
The main character in this book, Chico, is Hispanic, but his story is universal and engaging. I was delighted when my third-grader, who is a reluctant reader, read this book without stopping. She loved how Chico stood up for himself and solved his problems with Math. The illustrations are wonderful and the story has a terrific moral without preaching. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Judy Moody will make your kids laugh!
My daughter is nearly ten now, and at a reading level well past these early reader chapter books, but when she heard that there were two new books in this series she hadn't read yet, she asked if we could get them. Judy Moody inspires that kind of interest, with humor both kids and adults can enjoy, and characters with whom kids can really identify. Judy is a passionate, intelligent girl who cares about the world around her, but sometimes finds herself in a bit of a mess. She loves her brother, nicknamed Stink, though they often drive each other crazy in ways that will be familiar to any family. These first three books in the series are inventive and sweet, and offer an enjoyable kids-eye view of school. It's great to have them together in an affordable collection -- I'm getting it for my 7-year-old niece. ... Read more

Wemberly the mouse worries about everything: big things, like whetherher parents might disappear in the middle of the night; little things, likewhether she'll spill grape juice on her toy rabbit, Petal; and things inbetween, like whether she might shrink in the bathtub. What she is more worriedabout than anything else, however, is her first day at the New Morning NurserySchool: "What if no one else has spots? What if no one else wears stripes? Whatif no one else brings a doll? What if the teacher is mean? What if the roomsmells bad?" Happily, Miss Peachum introduces her to a kindred spirit rightaway. Jewel doesn't have spots, but she is wearing stripes Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars IT IS DIFFICULT TO FIND ANYTHING NOT TO LIKE IN THIS WORK.
This is one of those real surprises. What seems simple at first is really rather profound. All little kids worry (as do most adults) and they worry about the strangest little things. But we have to remember that what is little to us, is rather large to a first grader. This little book is perfect to read to the young child and a perfect lead-in to a great discussion of why not to worry and to put everthing into prespective. The text is quite simple and to the point. The art work is great and goes well with the text. The book is funny and the book is true and it has a great ending that actually teaches a lesson. What more could you want?I read this one to my classes all the time and have yet to find a child who could not relate.Recommend this one highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable and Very Helpful for a worrier or not
We bought this book for our son, who had begun to worry a bit more about school, and all the what if's, etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable little worry wart
Wemberly (a little girl mouse, despite the masculine sounding name) is a worrier. My oh my how she worries. It's amazing the girl can even get out of bed in the morning, she's so wracked with worries morning, noon, and night. She doesn't take the advice of her grandmother half as much as she should. Her grandmother (a sweatshirt wearing, roller-blade enjoying, high-tops sports shoe figure) is constantly advising Wemberly that she is carrying, "Too much worry". And on top of everything Wemberly is about to go to school for the first time. Rest assured that by the end of the tale, Wemberly's worries have at last been put to rest. Read more

Is Froggy nervous about the first day of school? Well, just a little.First he has a terrible nightmare, dreaming that he almost misses the bus and shows up at school in his underwear. Then when he does wake up, he drops the milk just as he's about to pour some on his bowl of flies! Finally Froggy makes it out the door, leapfrogging the whole way, eager for all the challenges that await him in this comical, brightly illustrated tale of a daunting-but-rewarding first day at school.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars May help calm school fears
Froggy has a dream about his upcoming first day at school ... and dreams he wears his pajamas to school. He then wakes up and realizes it was just a dream. This is very similar to any of us who have had anxiety about something and dreamed about showing up in our bedclothes. He ends up having a great day at school and comes home a happy camper.
5-0 out of 5 stars Froggy Goes to School
Froggy goes to School is about a young frog who goes to school for the first time. This book taught little kids not to be afraid to go to school and that school can be fun. The reading level is about 1st grade but is a good story to read to kids for a story time or bedtime. The book was funny and it was a joy to read and I hope every one has the chance to read this book in the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars Froggy Goes to School
Froggy is a young frog that is exited to do anything. I think Froggy goes to School is a great story for little kids in their toddler years (mostly for ages 3-7). This story is about a young frog and his first day of school. Froggy wakes up one morning and finds that he was running late for the bus and he don't want to miss his first day so he runs out the door and then when he gets on the bus his friends start to laugh at him because... Froggy forgot to get dressed he was on the bus in his boxers and then when he got to school his teacher called his name and only it was not his teacher it was his father calling him to get dressed school was starting soon. It was all a dream "bubble bubble, Toot toot, Chicken, Airplane, Soldier." To find out what this has to do with Froggy's first day of school read this story it's a Darn Tooting good one. And remember read 20 minutes a day. Thank you for reading this review. Have a good day. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Preschool prep
"Don't Go!", written and illustrated by Jane Breskin Zalben, is a charming picture book for younger readers. It tells the story of Daniel, a little boy who is experiencing his first day at preschool. Daniel and his family are all elephant-headed humanoids; the other kids in his class include a hippo, a pig, a cat, etc. This device is nicely used and gives the largely realistic book an appealing touch of fantasy.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, Fun and exciting
I'm six and I enjoyed this book. This book was very funny in different types of ways. It was about 3 children who go through adventures in a school for young dragon slayers. It reminds me of how it feels to be a new student. My favorite character is Angus who is always hungry and only hates eel but thats what they are served usually. I also like the pig that speaks pig latin! This is the first in a series. I have read 10 of them and plan to read them all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny, thrilling, well-written, and full of colorful characters
I enjoy reading the volumes in this series almost as much as my 5-year-old son enjoys hearing them read.Kate McMullan is a talented writer who displays wonderful wit and skill but also a great deal of heart. The Dragon Slayers' Academy books are a mixture of Harry Potter, Roald Dahl, and even (dare I say it?) the old Harvard Lampoon parody, "Bored of the Rings".

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Addition the School Library
This book is a great ice breaker for those first few days of school. The story is well written, and beautifully illustrated.
5-0 out of 5 stars What's in a name?Letters, I s'pose.
In 2001 a book came out entitled, "The Name Jar" about a girl from Korea who had moved to America and wanted an Americanized name. Then, in 2003, "My Name Is Yoon" came out with practically the same plot.Normally, I have little sympathy for children's books that mimic their predecessors. In this case, however, there can be little doubt as to which book is the better of the two."My Name Is Yoon", is a complex tale of imagination, flights of fancy, and gradual acceptance.By contrast, "The Name Jar" was simply okay. You can find ho-hum picture books lining the shelves of most libraries and bookstores around the globe. It is far rarer to find books quite as remarkable as the stunning, "Yoon".
5-0 out of 5 stars Great illiustrations, great message
This is a wonderful story about a young Korean girl who has moved to America with her family. At school when she write her name Yoon in English for the first time, she decides that she likes her Korean characters more than the English version because, "My name looks happy in Korean. The symbols dance together."

This story has made me a fan of David Kirk's work. The story is wonderful and teaches children a valuable lesson in self respect and being different, while showing that everyone is talented at something. You must never give up trying to find what your special talents are. Lil Miss Spider is excited about her first day of school, but when she arrives finds that there are many things that the other bugs can do, that she can't do well at all. At the end of the day she realizes how special she is when she courageously comes to the aid of another bug in trouble. She makes a gallant rescue and finally earns her gold star. "Our gifts, they are many: We hop, fly and crawl. But kindness," he (the principal) said, "Is the finest of all!" A perfect end to a brilliant children's story with unbelievably beautiful, bold illustrations. Your children won't be able to help themselves fall for the rhyming text as the story is brought to life with the pictures. This is a book that I delight in reading over and over again. One warning: The pages are gorgeous , but made on a thick, glossy paper. My daughter, who loves to put EVERYTHING in her mouth, got the nastiest paper cut on her lip. So now when I read it to her I give her a soft toy to keep her hands full. Ive purchased the board books as well, and those I put into heavy rotation. This is still my favorite, but will be better for her when she's a bit older.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun for kids--and has a valuable lesson as well
The best word I can think of to describe David Kirk's illustrations is sunshiny. There is a buoyant, inherently happy quality to his work that goes so well with his simple Miss Spider series. Here, Miss Spider is excited to begin her first day at school, but gets more and more disappointed as the day goes on to discover that she isn't good at anything!5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must-have for every child!
I received this book as a gift for my 4 month old daughter-we love it! The simple rhymes are easy to read and the bright, vivid pictures hold even the youngest child's interest. Little Miss Spider is a character any child can grow up with! I also love the fact that the book is practically indestructible-the pages don't tear or warp. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars BEST FOR THOSE APPREHENSIVE ABOUT SCHOOL
OUR PRE-SCHOOLER IS SO OUTGOING, THIS BOOK DIDN'T STRIKE A CHORD W/ HER & SHE NEVER WANTED IT READ A 2ND TIME.SHE DID LOVE THE COOKIE PAGE THOUGH.LAUREN CHILD IS VERY FUNNY, BUT OUR FAVORITE IS 'I AM NOT SLEEPY...'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing but love for Charlie and Lola!
My kids both love Charlie and Lola!I have only recently discovered them, but found this book just before my daughter started kindergarten. This book looks at some of the things that kids will worry about when they start school (especially for the first time, but also as it turns out for starting a new grade!) and helps ease many of those worries in a way that is gentle and humorous.I love how gentle and easy-going Charlie is with his little sister, and how refreshing it is to see a sister and brother pair who genuinely love each other and even when they're frustrated with each other, they manage to work it out.My daughter and her little brother will have richer lives for this series of books.I can't recommend them highly enough!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I absolutely LOVE Lauren Child
I have recently discovered the Charlie and Lola Lauren Child books and I (and my kids) can't get enough of them. The relationship between brother and sister is gorgeous, and the insight into a small girl's mind is spot on.The Language and phrasing is something that all kids can identify with. When I read these books all my children (12, 10, 6 and 5) stop and listen. This one is particularly entertaining as it contains Lola's imaginary friend Soren Lorenson.Amazing illustrations and wonderful story. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for the New Kindergartener, and parents!
My child's school passed this book out to our Kindergarteners before school started just to prepare them (and us) for their first day of school. This book does a wonderful job of preparing the children for school, what to expect, etc., and even talks about the jitters on that first day. But, as a parent, be VERY careful when you get towards the end because I GUARANTEE that it will make you cry! This is a great book and I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Example
I liked the book, The Gold Cadillac because it showed an example of how the colored people were seperated from the white people for no reason. For example,it tells you why the colored people couldn't drink water from the fountain that says white's only. That bothered me because they only cared about the color of their skin. That also made me feel sad about how things used to be.
4-0 out of 5 stars I Can Relate...
I liked the book because I like to imagine stuff too! Once, I imagined I was the best skateboarder. Stuart imagined he was a super hero. He imagined he could fly. He imagined lots of stuff. So, I suggest you read the book for more information.
4-0 out of 5 stars Stuart Finds Friendship
I liked Stuart's Cape because he has a big imagination. Stuart needs adventures. But, adventures are only for people who have capes, that's what he says. In this book,Stuart moves to a new place and is worried that no one will be his friend. In the end, Stuart finds many friends in his new home.

My little girl started Kindergarten this year and I bought this book to help encourage her to look past her shyness and fears of meeting new people. This book starts off with Strawberry being excited about meeting the kids in her class and also she has to decide what clothes she wants to wear. The pictures are colorful and very pretty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun book
I bought this book and two other Little Witch books to read to my daughter when she was only around the age of four. The story held her attention from front to back.Once she started to read on her own around the age of five she would ask to read the book with me.At the age of seven she still likes to read this book.Little Witch books make a nice gift also.If parents want to read books to their kids then I would have no problem giving this book to a four or five year old up to an eight year old.

5-0 out of 5 stars I remember loving this book as a child, thx for the memories
All the little witch stories are cute and funny and much fun for children.I found this book on Barnes & Noble and experienced many fond memories of past readings in my childhood!Thank you! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!!!
Children will love the silly plot and the gags in every illustration! Most of the story is told in comic-book-like form, with speech bubbles and pictures.
5-0 out of 5 stars As hip as you wanna be
There's an odd complaint that sometimes cycles through the parent circles of this great American country. If a children's picture book is filled with just too many injokes and gags for the parents to get (and not their kids) then that book is immediately given the back-handed compliment of "hip".The "Olivia" books by Ian Falconer are "hip"."Many Moons" by James Thurber is "hip".Do you see the trend? These books tend to be written or illustrated by New Yorker cartoonists/writers.So it only makes sense that such uncalled for disparaging remarks should be attached to my beloved Harry Bliss. In this delightful "Mrs. Watson Wants Your Teeth" (a delicious addition to his similar school-based story, "A Fine Fine School"), author Alison McGhee and illustrator Bliss tell a tale of realistic childhood fears and the surprising way that one little first grader overcomes them.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Adorable New Children's Book for Young Readers
Today is the first day of first grade. A day when many kids are excited. But not this little girl. This little girl is terrified of her first day of first grade, because a second grader has told her the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about her new first grade teacher, Mrs. Watson. Apparently Mrs. Watson is a three-hundred-year-old, purple-tongued alien who adores stealing the teeth of young earthling children, and making jewelry like necklaces and bracelets, and earrings for herself with them. That's why the little girl is so terrified, she has a loose tooth! Now the little girl must keep her mouth closed for the entire year of first grade, or Mrs. Watson will steal her precious baby teeth.
