4-0 out of 5 stars my name is maria isabel
The book is basicly a pretty good book.It probaly has every thing a bookshould have. But in this book Maria Isabel is new to her school and there is another Maria in the class. So her teacher has been calling her Mary.Maria Isabel doesn't aswer to the teacher because she is calling her Mary and she likes to be called Maria Isabel Salazar Lopez. And at the end there is a big surprise waiting for her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of great lessons in this book
My Name is Mara Isabel is the story of a little girl facing a difficult problem when she is forced to change schools mid-year.At her new school, her teacher decides to call her Mary because there are already two girls named Mara in the class.Mara Isabel does not want to be called Mary but she doesn't know how to tell her teacher. She consistently fails to respond when the teacher calls on her in class because she doesn't recognize Mary as her name. This leads to the teacher assuming that she does not want to participate in the school's Winter Pageant. When the teacher has the students write an essay titled, My Greatest Wish, Mara Isabel gets her chance to say how she feels.
5-0 out of 5 stars How do you solve a problem like....?
A sweet story that kids will easily identify with.I found this book very easy for a small child to understand, and I appreciated the theme that any kid can take to heart. Not fitting in and the fear of not being liked by one's superior (in this case, a teacher) is a universal theme. The fact that Maria gets saddled with an incompetent teacher from the start doesnt help matters for her anyway. As much as Id like to rail against the idea of a teacher changing her students name because, We already have two Marias in this class, I know that there is no lack of incompetent, yet well meaning, teachers in the world whod do this very thing. It isnt entirely clear in the story why it is that Maria doesnt discuss her problems with her parents or her teacher.People reading this book to children should make it clear that Maria would have dealt with a lot less misery if she had simply told someone why she felt badly. And some kids may wish for a more concrete ending than the one offered here. Why doesnt the teacher apologize to Maria? In any case, this book might fit in well with other stories of new kids in school.Even the Ramona Quimby books would pair nicely, as a very different little girl dealing with school and her teacher. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars America
Candace Fleming goes out on a limb to tell the story of Lowji a young boy who moved with his mother and father from India to a small midwestern town in the United States of America. This story is charming, light-hearted, and well written. Lowji is an endearing character that comes to understand his new home. He is challenged by cultural misunderstandings and learning the funny expressions that English speakers of the United States often take for granted. In a very innocent way Lowji makes the adjustments to life in the USA. He makes new friends and settles into a new home. The acculturation experience is one that many new Americans may endure. Fleming handles the situation with clever conscience without vilifying either Lowji's family or the townspeople. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Chinese Jackie Robinson?
I loved this book. As a teacher, there is nothing better than a multicultural children's chapter book, with American history and a plethora of vicarious experiences. This is a great book to teach children about immigration and traditional Chinese customs. It wasn't until college that I learned some of these customs and it was also then that I learned that all I had to do was read Lord's book and I would've had the knowledge that it took me 20 years to get. The young girl in the story, Shirley, takes children through a whirlwind of adventures and experiences that children can relate to and learn from. This is a great multi-cultural book to add to your collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm 8 and loved this book
It was definitely a book to read over a period of time (say one chapter per night). It was very well written and I loved the chants!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent children's story!
I read this one when I was ten, and recently bought a copy for my three daughters to enjoy. I read this one at least 7 or 8 times myself.... Lord creates a wonderful character in Shirley who has to adapt to a whole new culture on her way to becoming an American. I recommend this one for all kids, not just those interested in sports.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Teens!!
I thought this book was one of the best books I've ever read. It was very realistic and it's something people want to read about. It had a very nice plot line and was a book some people could relate to! I would recommend this book to all my friends. I loved the way this book was written, it was so creative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
The first one was awesome and so was the second one! It was a page turner, I read it in a few hours and was in awe about how well the story went from one situation to the other. Another great read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
I read TTYL and absolutly loved it! Then I saw this one come out and had to have it! If anyone is border line to buy it, do it! It's just as good as the first book with just as many adventures.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Story with a Gentle Strength
I finished this novel last night and was entranced by the author's ability to put me right there along with Sadie and her family.Throughout my reading, I constantly thought of the stories my own mother told me of growing up in a large family during the Great Depression in Texas.Children worked alongside parents in cotton fields, mending clothing, and at shrimp canneries.I am anxious to see how receptive my 7th graders are to the story. As a teacher, I always look for books that can flow into studies in other classrooms.I believe The Truth About Sparrows is perfect for that purpose in blending language arts with social studies, and, in particular, Texas History which is taught at the seventh grade level.I've also recommended it to my 24 year old daughter for the connection to her grandmother, my mom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Richie's Picks: THE TRUTH ABOUT SPARROWS
"I pushed myself up and startled a sparrow. It flew down the road and took up a new roost near a large cardboard box nestled in the cedars. Something stirred, and it flew again. I looked closer and recognized the man Mama had fed last night asleep inside the box. He shifted and pulled his knees up closer to his chest.
5-0 out of 5 stars A touching and satisfying story, even for adult readers
From the opening pages of this book, twelve-year-old Sadie draws us into the world of a family fighting to survive during the Depression. When Sadie's father decides to move the family from Missouri to Texas to find work, Sadie is angry over leaving her home and best friend behind. She's determined to find a way back to her home, and promises her best friend that she won't forget her or make anyone else her best friend. Life on the road is challenging for Sadie's family. Her father's physical disabilities are woven seamlessly and compassionately into the story. We learn much about Sadie by seeing her brothers, sisters, parents, and strangers they meet on the road through her eyes.Sadie is a likeable character and her ambivalent feelings of love and resentment toward her family draw the reader into her world. Sadie takes steps toward independence by finding work in the local shrimp cannery and showing an interest in a lonely man, but her life takes many surprising turns and she is forced to change and grow as she deals with new friends and tests of her loyalties, poverty, a hurricane, and the unexpected arrival of a new baby.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wonder what ever happened to. . .
Alexander? He'd be quite middle-aged by now, perhaps with children of his own.
5-0 out of 5 stars Alexander loves Alexander
Okay, I'll admit it. It's cool to see the look on Alex's face when he gets books that have his name in them. And this was definitely a winner. We'd checked out 'the horrible, terrible, no-good, very bad day', so I knew he'd like this one. Of course when we read it together he reads what Alexander says. It's pretty cool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Who hasn't had a "terrible, horrible no good very bad day"
I grew up just loving Alexander in Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day.My mother read it to us a children (ok, so now you know I'm not too old!) and I was just thrilled to see such a good copy of not only it but the other Alexander stories as well. The library binding is very nice and this book will definitely be a keepsake for my children someday. If you like to have books to pass on, this one's for you! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Depressing story for a child
I bought about 50 children's books online recently and 'What You Know First' is by far my least favorite. The story is depressing and the black and white pictures are dreary. I usually love all children's books, so I would not give a book 1 star unless I absolutely felt it was necessary. I would not purchase this book again.

5-0 out of 5 stars I haven't forgotten what I knew first
For any of you who have left home..what you knew first..this book will deeply touch you.As I read this in the bookstore, tears came to my eyes. It's a story of a little girl who struggles to understand why she and her family must leave the only place they know.Though change has its sadness, this book shows the sweetness of memories you take with you forever. This is a good book for a child going through such a change or for an adult who still recalls all those familiar things of home.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet, beautiful story of a child facing change
I love this book for the way the illustrations and story compliment each other so well. The story narrated by a small child facing the prospect of moving to a new home is achingly beautiful. You can feel the child's painand anxiety about moving to a new place and being afraid of forgetting theold place and the memories therein. The child tells about all the thingsshe will miss and then devises a plan to stay and not go with her familyand baby brother. It is a story for anyone who has ever had to face apainful change in his or her life.I could read it again and again. ... This is a very entertaining book and I recommend it to everyone. The author uses a fictional family on a fictional farm to weave a story that has a solid plot and believable characters. Her purpose is to make history come alive and be interesting.4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, yet to easy to solve the riddles
I liked this book but the riddles in it seemed to easy to solve to me yet I would still probably recomened it to others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful series of books, however...
I was recently reminded of the Betsy-Tacy books I loved so much when I was a young girl. You can not imagine my horror at seeing the current editions' illustrations of the girls, though.Part of the original books' charm was the simple illustrations.Whoever decided to change them should be ashamed.Ashamed and fired.Seriously.
5-0 out of 5 stars Charming!
What a delightful book! I cannot believe I missed these books as a child; I picked them up to read with my daughters on a friend's recommendation, and they are a treasure. They remind me of so many other classic children's books -- Lois Lenski, Carolyn Haywood, Beverly Cleary, Eleanor Estes. Not only are the stories sweet and captivating, they take me back to a place where life was so much simpler. It's a return to innocence, and I loved the journey. I would highly recommend these books for little girls; they'll make new friends that they'll cherish for a lifetime.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Book's Review
Betsy-Tacy is an amazing book. The series is just unbelievable. I checked it out from the library and I just loved them. I have read the series once and I am working on the second time. I rate this book 5 stars because it is so wonderful. As you read through these pages, you will be learning about friendship and bravery. Betsy and Tacy have adventures of a lifetime in this book and all of the others. My mom always cries when she sees the person who donated this series to the library because I love them so much. If you read this book and love it, please read the series. It will be books that you will never forget as long as you live. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Hidden Treasure
My seven-year-old daughter and I read together almost every night. In the past two years, no book (besides the Old Testament) has been her selection more than When the Whippoorwill Calls. The Blue Ridge family it depictsfinds out the federal government is buying up their mountain to make wayfor the Blue Ridge Parkway. In the process, the seven-year-old protagonistlearns a lesson of hope from the example of her father, who struggles with, but in the end adapts to, their move to the flatlands. The beauty of thestory, though, is in its language.Like the mountain people she writesabout, Ms. Ransom has a gift for expressing complicated sentiment in simpleand concrete ways. After a number of readings, it dawned on me that I wasreading good poetry.I should mention that the lllustrations are lovelyand the layout of the pages is attractive and interesting. ... This is a very cute story and I look forward to reading it to my daughter.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Kids Adore Ella!
I have a five and a seven year old and they love everything ELLA. The best part is, so do I. This story, as well as ELLA TAKES THE CAKE is a gem. The message really resonates with both my children and me...I get teary at the end. So many children's books are just silly or entertaining. This one is both but also very literary. I love the allusion to the golden rule and the lesson about staying true to yourself. The illustrations are gorgeous, too! I highly reccommend this book.

I read this book and could not put it down, I really enjoyed it. I found aspects of it funny, and magical (the sea breeze).
5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoy Spending Time with Lizzie and Turner
I picked up Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy, by Gary D. Schmidt, at the airport recently, and finished it the same day. It's a quick read, but one that leaves you thinking about it afterwards. The story is based on an actual historical incident that occurred on a small island off the coast of Maine in the early 20th century, re-told from the perspective of a fictional minister's son.
4-0 out of 5 stars Lizzie Bright Review
I thought that the story was very well written. The story line, I thought was very original. Some parts through out the book seemed like a little bit of a stretch. I found that the very end was a little out there. However, just before that, was very interesting. Some of the consepts that were brought into it were very interesting. Over all I felt it was a good book and I would recomend it. ... Read more

My 8 year old daughter loved this book!!!This book addresses from a child's perspective, the emotions that occur when one's best friend is moving away.It also does a wonderful job showing how boys and girls may express their feelings differently and the value in conflict resolution.

I gave this book 5stars because I think this book is a really good book.I like the book "Amber Brownis not a crayon"because everybody makes fun of her last name because its the name of a croyon.then she dresses up as a brown crayon for halloween that is why I like this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Judith Viorst comes up with another great Alexander story
"Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" is an absolute classic of children's literature, even if I have heard Judith Viorst's story done way too often at speech tournaments. The idea of feeling so mad or sad that you want to move to Australia remains one of the great punch lines. In "Alexander's Not (Do You Hear Me? I Mean It!) Going to Move" she comes up with a story almost as good. Alexander might talk about moving to Australia, but when his mom and dad tell him that the family is moving to a new home a thousand miles away he decides that he is not going to move. He is not even going to pack.
4-0 out of 5 stars Do you hear me?
This is a continuation of the Alexander books. We should all have read about his terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day already.I also use this book in my classroom and have found that while the kids do like to hear another story about this adorable little boy, this story just doesn't click with them. The success of Alexander's other stories came from the way kids were able to relate to his situation. This book just doesn't have that.5-0 out of 5 stars Alexander is definately moving...off the charts!
Alexander, Who's Not (Do you hear me? I mean it!) Going to move by Judith Viorst is a great childrens book.It is wonderfully illustrated by Robin Preiss Glasser. The storyline is realistic and approaches a subject in a creative style. It is attractive to young readers and manages to shed light on Alexander's negative feelings towards moving. Alexander ends up happy and so will the reader. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Original, well written coming of age story
SKELLIG is highly original and beautifully written. The characters of Michael and Mina as well as their parents are well drawn and fully realized and I feel the book would appeal equally to girls and boys. The book is neither pure fantasy or realistic fiction but a unique and lyrically crafted blend.Michael's school life and Mina's home schooled life are nicely contrasted and though the book is set in England and has that definite British feel it is not confusing to the American reader. The book makes sense in the context of the fantasy character (Skellig) it creates and has a satisfying conclusion even though we never get a total understanding of who or what Skellig is though Almond gives us tantalizing hints.Too much explanation would have taken away some of the magic and grace of the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Skellig
David Almond's Skellig is one of those books that make you believe in such things as angels. I read this book about three years ago, and enjoyed it so much that I still call it one of my favourites.

"He was filthy and pale and dried out and I thought he was dead.I couldn't have been more wrong.I'd soon begin to see the truth about him, that there'd never been another creature like him in the world."

5-0 out of 5 stars My friend moved away
This is a very touching book. It shows emotions of what happens when a close friend moves away. Frankin takes it out on everybody. But in the end his father figures out that it was Otter's moving that upset Franklin. His father told him how they can still stay in contact with each other. Franklin sent Otter a puzzle that he made.
