5-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the MOST informative book I've ever read
I just finished this book, and it has really put the fast food empire in perspective for me. I never knew what actually goes on behind the counter, or how many chemicals can be in a strawberry milkshake. I would reccomend this book for everyone. One bad thing about it, though, is that some parts tend to get a bit boring. But most of the book is very informative and interesting. Overall, this book was definatley worth my money.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best diet book I have ever read
if you ever eat fast food after reading this book, you obviously didnt read it. it covers how the fast food industry has changed america for the worst. how they manipulate kids into eating fast food. the conditions of the animals that are raised to be eaten. the diet of the animals. what goes on in the slaughter houses. how they have made the farmers go out of business. how the restarunts are run. fast food in schools and much more.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Fast-Food Nation" for a Younger Audience
Eric Schlosser wrote his groundbreaking piece of investigative nonfiction called "Fast Food Nation," and in 2006 he returns with "Chew On This." Both books are very similar, but "Chew On This" is for a younger audience. I think, with the importance of solving the problem Schlosser writes about, we need two books about the similar subject, so people of all ages can understand its meaning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Rhythm Nice Change
My one year old grandson enjoys the pictures in this book and the rhythm of the words. It is nice for me to have a book to read to him that isn't about warm fuzzy animals.

5-0 out of 5 stars SushiLoving Toddler!
My daughter received this book and 2 others (Yum Yum Dim Sum, and Hola Jalapeno) as a gift when she was born. In the last 3 years we have grabbed these books over and over again at bedtime, to go out for dinner, overnight trips... all the time! She recognizes the pieces of sushi she just had for dinner and LOVES to read the book to herself (from memory... of course). The illustrations are vivid and fun to look at and the rhyming words are like lyrics to her ("Someday I'll Eat With Chopsticks, But Today Just With My Hands")! She often asked for "Miso In My Sippy Cup, Tofu In My Bowl"!
5-0 out of 5 stars really cool and with lasting power
my 2 year old son has loves this book and he's been into it since he was 6 monthes old.he now requests eating with chopsticks, even when the meal is not asian.we have the whole series and they are all great fun.it's a great way to begin to teach multi-culturalism to babies and tots. another big plus is the attention you get from the other moms when you show up with it at playgroup. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Sugar Cookies!
I have the original 1957 book which is falling apart because of use when I was a child.I recently purchased two Betty Crocker's Cookbook for Boys and Girls to give as gifts for two young women who were looking for a great sugar cookie recipe to make with their children. The one in this cookbook is the best!!In fact I used it so much growing up I gave the recipe to my grandmother who continued to bake these cookies and send them to me when I was in college. With so many complicated and fancy recipes out there today, it was great to see this book still in print.A must have for families with young children!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful cookbook with good memories!
This is the first cookbook I ever received. It was a gift from my parents when I was a child. I enjoyed making the recipes then and I still enjoy them. Imagine my delight at being able to get another copy of this great book! Among my favorite recipes: sugar cookies, oatmeal cookies, the hot fudge pudding, apple crisp, meatloaf, the pink lemonade, cheese dreams, and tuna burgers. The sugar cookie recipe is the best one I have ever found! This is a terrific gift for all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Childhood Memories
I remember using this cookbook when I was a child, and as a grownup, have wanted to find the book just for the Sugar Cookie recipe. I was delighted to see that the book had been re-issued, so I ordered it.It is just the same as the 1950's issue. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Miniature houses have an undeniable appeal, especially when they're made out of food. But the architectural achievements in this guide are so charming and sometimes so elaborate that it's hard to imagine actually eating them; they're meant to be admired, not devoured. From rustic to royal, humble to ornate, this eclectic assortment ranges from cooking-school complex to child-simple. Some were even designed by kids and could certainly be constructed by them. (Just be sure to buy extra trimmings, since the budding architects are bound to do some nibbling!)Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I'll keep it but only as a supplement to better books
This book has pictures of some really cool ideas, and pictures of some less-cool ideas. It also has several basic recipes and some general building information, but it isn't very detailed. Most frustrating are the pictures of houses that have only one or two pictures and little or no information about some of the most interesting design details!
2-0 out of 5 stars Really disappointing
If you are seeking the inside secrets to gingerbread artistry, don't expect much from this book. This book doesn't even begin to cover the many gingerbread/food techniques currently available -- and that home builders can use -- which mimic real-life or fantasy -- building structures and contents.I thought that many of the instructions shown were too simple and general -- the reader deserved to read more details, more inside information on how to work with food items to create effects -- especially since the author is a pastry chef! The book's description also promises photos of the Grove Park Inn's gingerbread competition entries. But if you expect to see the competition's top of the line entries featuring incredible details, don't. I looked forward to receiving this book.I'm sorry I bought it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaches Lifelong Health and Openmindedness about Trying New Foods
This book educates your child about the health level and quantity-intake of different foods, using the traffic light gradations of red, yellow, and green.Even today, after reading this book to my 4 1/2 old daughter since she was 2 1/2, she will pipe up and say, "Hey, this is a green light food, Mom!"We also use some of the recipes listed towards the end of the book, especially our own version of a balanced fruit smoothie.
5-0 out of 5 stars As straightforward as it says: Eat Healthy Feel Great
-Puts the revised 2005 Food Pyramid designers to shame withits straightforward, clear approach (versus the revised pyramid 'stripes' that are supposed to indicate how much of each fod group to eat but who can figure it out at a glance?)
5-0 out of 5 stars Building Good Nutritional Habits
What a wonderful resource for parents who are trying to "do the right thing" -- to teach their children healthy eating habits in the midst of a society that promotes the fast, processed, and packaged. Dr. Sears categorizes food into green light/yellow light/red light groups, and it's a concept my children (ages 2, 4) readily understand. The text is simple and clear, and the message is presented in a fun way. This book would be a big help to any parents interested in changing their families' eating habits for the better. There are parts in the book that are just for parents: they explain nutrition, as well as make suggestions on how to incorporate more "green light" foods in the family's meals. My children enjoy this book. They ask for it by name -- we've read it dozens of times. ... Read more

These recipes are playful designs and they are artistic.Thay aren't corny or gimmicky. This book teaches us all just how creative and therapeutic baking can be.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book for gift (and self)!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun cupcakes for kids!
Super-Duper Cupcakes is a fun, easy to navigate book for both kids and parents to enjoy together. For my daughter's 6th birthday, we invited a group of her friends to come over and make cupcakes using this book.I decided on the "Bangs and Braids" recipe because it's so personal, and they had a total blast making cupcakes decorated to look like themselves!I highly recommend this book for holiday and birthday parties, or just a rainy day. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Who says this book is for little kids?
We found this book at the library and it quickly became a family favorite. Key word here is family. My 13 year old son heard me reading it to his 3 year old sister and 6 year old brother. My 13 year old thought is was great. In fact, he loved it so much that when his 15 year old sister came home from volleyball practice, he read it OUT LOUD to her! Basically, my older kids love reading this book to the younger ones. The book is funny and clever and appeals to "kids" of all ages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clever book with a great twist on eating.
Cute little story about a pea who has to suffer through the same dinner every night, candy, to finally get his well deserved dessert-yummy spinach!Happy colorful illlustrations expressing the many emotions of the little pea and his family.Great twist about eating your veggies. This story concludes with, "And they lived hap-pea-ly ever after."

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST BOOK EVER!
This is the best book ever written for kids! My four year old son received this book as a gift and has been attached to it ever since. We read this book every single night, without fail, and it is even the perfect length before bed when he is tired. He is now able to recite the entire book throughout the day. This book as encouraged my son to have a love of books and reading. A must have! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful for a ten year old!
I didn't find this book helpful, and here's why:My 10 year old daughter tends to over eat and crave unhealthy foods, so I'm working on educating her on nutrition and keeping her active.I thought this book looked like a good resources, but the problem is that it looks like a young child's book, even though it contains good information in the second half, appropriate to an older child. So, my 10 year old took one look at it, declared it a 'baby's book' (because the cover and art and first pages look like it's designed for a very young child), and I couldn't get her further in it, because she prides herself on now being able to read 'big kid' (chapter type) books. The packaging/art approach just don't match the level of the content!

4-0 out of 5 stars Learn food in color
Very easy to read. Lot of color. Food pyramid is out of date but the book is still very well done for kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Vegetarian Book Ever!!!
I LOVE this book! Being the only vegetarian in my family (and also being a 'kid')makes it really hard to find things to eat that are healthy that I still like. The Teen's Vegetarian Cookbook is the best cookbook I've ever used. The format is fantastic, the instructions are really simple to follow, the recipes don't usually include strange things or anything that no one would actually eat. If you're vegan, there are lots of really good recipes that don't contain any animal products at all. This book isn't just for vegetarians, though! I got my whole family eating some of it. They added meat to theirs, but they still love the pizza dough. I even make the Chocolate Coma Pie for a party and everyone ate it and enjoyed it. Whether you're a teen, a parent, someone hoping to eat more healthy but still delicious food, or you were just dared to be vegetarian for a week, this book is the ULTIMATE!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for tweens as well!
I got this book for my eleven year old daughter.Ever since we have been enjoying great meals, such as Thai Coconut Curry, on Sunday nights when it's her turn to cook. The recipes are easy enough for her to follow without much help, yet hard enough for a challange. She is sure to grow up to be a great cook and not someone who is afraid of any recipe with more than five ingrediants.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Veggie Cookbook for All Ages
I received this book when I first became a vegetarian as a young teenager. I loved it then for its easy to make recipes and easy to find ingredients. I love it now because the recipes actually taste better than my fancy veggie cookbooks. I recommend this book for vegetarians (and non-vegetarians!) of all ages. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Do restaurant menus featuring full-color food photos kick your salivary glands into high gear? Angela Wilkes's inviting, heavily illustrated cookbook offers the same satisfaction of seeing exactly what you're going to get--along with the ensuing hunger pangs. Children can follow each recipe step by step, with photographs that show what you're supposed to do, how to do it, and when. Thankfully, the 60 recipes are appealing dishes the whole family will want to eat, from Salade Nicoise and Filled Crepes to the more basic Tacos and Guacamole and Spicy Chicken Burgers. The chapters include: "Before You Start," "Kitchen Rules," "Super-Fast Snacks" (Cheater's Pizzas, Crunchy Crostini, Fruit Smoothies), "Speedy Meals" (Classic Omelettes, Vegetable Soups, Chicken Curry and Rice); "Delightful Desserts" (Lemon Cheesecake, Fruit Crumble, Tiramisu), "Treats and Sweets" (Oat Bars, Chocolate Dips, Macaroons), "Picture Glossary" (Grilling, Stir-Frying, Marinating), and a helpful index. The book provides quantities of ingredients in both imperial and metric measurements and clearly organizes the ingredients lists. The overall effect is dazzling--youngsters will find themselves right at home in the kitchen, whipping up simple or elaborate dishes with confidence and glee. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Reason Why I Cook Today
I am an 18 year old girl who first got this book about 10 years ago. I recently bought it again because my parents gave it away without telling me. The recipes in this book are so fun and innovative that they made me find my love for cooking at such a young age. Now I cook dinner every night. Parents: if you want your kids to get involved in cooking actual meals, buy them this book! You won't regret it! And to those who say that the recipes are too complex for kids, they aren't giving their children enough credit. Your kids are probably smarter than you. So get this book and open your children's eyes to the wonderful world of cooking.

4-0 out of 5 stars My 3 yr old son loves this book!
My 3 yr old son carries this book around the house and has me read it while he looks at the pictures. He is now begining to "read" it all by himself. We have not actually made any of the food yet, but when we do, I know he will be more likely to try the various food. Funny side note... one of the recipes call for you to prick something with a fork, and my son is always asking me to spell things. We were in line at the store when he asked loudly, "Mommy, how do spell prick". Needless to say, I wish the author would have used the word poke instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Child-Directed Cooking
From age 4 to age 7, my daughter has greatly enjoyed cooking from this book.Unlike when we cook together from other cookbooks or recipes, when we cook from this book, she can really take the lead, and I am her assistant. At age 7, she is able to make some of the items entirely on her own.Using this book has encouraged her to take an active role in preparing foods for our family and dinner guests. She takes pleasure and pride in her creations, because she worked hard and they taste good!Because of the thoughtful design of the book, the child doesn't have to be able to read to figure out what to do, with a little parental help. The recipes included are healthful and tasty. The drawings and layout are appealing to children and adults.I highly recommend this book to families with children from preschool through at least second grade to get your children into the fun of cooking.Enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good idea, but format could be improved
My kids and I tried this cookbook from the library. While we really enjoyed making a few of the recipes out of this book (esp. the popovers) I have to agree with another reviewer that the format makes it someone difficult to use-esp. on the spur of the moment. The adult really needs to have time to have thoroughly read the recipe and gathered all the ingredients before the kids join you in the kitchen. Then you can flip to the illustrated instructions for the kids. This is a good idea but not always practical. It would of been nice to have the two meshed so that the kids could "read" the illustrations, while you read the directions.I also found the recipes limited in scope and difficulty, but it is great for cooking with preschool age children. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars At Last, Thank You Mr. Publisher
This book has been unavailable for many years. The copies that people had (I wasn't lucky enough to have one of my own and had to Xerox pages here and there from friends that did.) they held on to very tightly. Now it's available again, (Thank you Andrews McMeel Publishing) and we can all have our very own copies.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must disagree with jerry i h , Aug 2004
I must disagree with the review posted by jerry i.h.in Aug 2004. All of the sins of omission that he mentions are covered in great detail in the ingredients chapter. For example, there is one page on sifting and measuring flour, a paragraph on egg size as it applies to the way Heatter writes recipes, and a page on beating egg whites. Ms Heatter is known as one of the "Three Fussbudgets" at my house (Rose Levy Berenbaum & Lynn Rosetto Kasper being the other two) because her instructions are sometimes detailed to the point of being fussy. Her directions yield beautiful results however, and provide techniques that can be used in other recipes to good effect. (Her pan-lining trick for bar cookies comes to mind.) The Palm Beach Brownies have become the only brownie I bake now as they are so wonderful. Her detailed instructions yield a reliably, decadently fudgy brownie, with a marvelous espresso kick. I would buy this book if only for this recipe. (Incidentally, versions of this recipe are available on the internet, but they modify the ingredients and skip significant portions of the instructions such that I cannot believe a comparable brownie would result.)

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good But Not Great Chocolate Book
This book has a legendary reputation. It was one of the earliest (1978) bestselling cookbooks about just chocolate. Most cookbook authors and culinary professionals either have it or know about it. I find this chocolate book rather over-rated, but it is nevertheless a good resource for chocolate recipes to have on your bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for young chefs!
This is the perfect book for older vegetarian kids who want to try their hand in the kitchen. And its forward by dietitian and author Suzanne Havala is a simple, reassuring guide, especially for non-vegetarian parents who have concerns about their independently vegetarian children or teens. For more than ten years, the author of Kids Can Cook Vegetarian Recipes,Dorothy R. 4-0 out of 5 stars Breaking bread together.
I disagree with the reviewer here who complained about this book not showing cultural unity. How much more unified can you get than a boy sharing meals at his friends houses? If we want to promote understanding others cultures, you could hardly start at a better place than breaking bread together. Food is one of the ways we show love to our families and others. My children and I thought the book was great, and will be exploring other, similar titles.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice attempt to address multiracial issues to youth, but...
...the book fails to address our multicultural society as a whole contingent. The story follows a young white girl while she explores the diversity of her society, but does not work towards unifying the groups she meets together.
5-0 out of 5 stars Its True!
This book shows children that we may all be from different cultures, but in the simplest ways we are very much the same.It is a good first day of school book, or good multicultural education book! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I thought it would be more of an autobiography or memoir, but it was divided into short chapters that would discuss some feature of her struggle with her eating disorder, and then connect them to a bible verse and discuss her relationship with God. If you're looking for a spiritual memoir, then go for this book. Otherwise, don't go near it. It's choppy and in my opinion, not well written.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I have read Christie's previous book and thought it was excellent.Along comes a second book and it is written at a more teen oriented audience which I believe is a crucial component in looking at the beginnings of eating disorder.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource Tool
We have been using this book with Sonlight Curriculum this year.My children range in age from 6 to 12 years old.The book at times is too difficult for the 6 year old and too easy for the 12 year old, but in general it has been very useful. The chapters are short and difficult concepts are clearly explained. My children are alwys excited to get to the activity section of each chapter, but are disappointed about half the time. The 'activities' usually always work, but they are not always very fun or interesting. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter has loved this book from the beginning
Hola Jalepeno is just plain fun! This is one of the first books that we bought for our daughter and one that she has shown interest in from the start.I think it is the fun rhyming cadence of the book that she likes. She would listen when she was 2 month old and still likes to listen at 13 months. It's nice and short so it fits well with a little one's attention span.Reading this book can be a lot of fun!

4-0 out of 5 stars Yummy Yummy for my Tummy...
Another cute addition to Amy Wilson Sanger's series of book and cute as can be. Although I like this one, it's not my favorite. A few of the words are a little much for a childrens book, actually I'm stumbling saying them as this is a rhyming book and with a toddler they can't wait to get to the next page. Very cute but could have been just a drop better.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR WANA-BE CHEF TEENS! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
My daughter checked out this book from our puplic library, she was sooooo excited when she was able to cook the things in the book without much help from me.When she would finish,it would be GREAT!!!!! I will defiantly be purchasing this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars TAKE THE NIGHT OFF! LET YOUR TEEN COOK DINNER:)
My 12 year old pre-teenage son (who is already pretty handy in the kitchen) found this at our local library and has been going on and on and on about all the neat recipes and how easy they were for him to understand. He asked if he could start cooking some dinners for our family (using these recipes). I was like, "Uuuggh...Okay, I'll let you. If you promise to clean up." (You can never look anxious to a teen - or it ruins their fun. But inside I was doing a cart wheel - I do not enjoy cooking.) I looked through the book myself. The recipes look yummy and simple and there are all kinds of tips along the way. I like the recipes because all of the ingredients appear to be things that I can pick up at our local market. I'm buying my own copy and will buy more as gifts for teens.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners or know-it-alls!
Great book for teens who don't know how to make anything and love to eat or teens who think they know how to make it all. The books s just as it's sub-title, "how to cook what you want to eat." It has great recipe alternatives to eating in instead of dining out--and learning something new while you're at it!
