    Editorial Review

Officer Buckle is a roly-poly bloke, dedicated to teaching schoolchildren important safety tips, such as never put anything in your ear and never stand on a swivel chair. The problem is, Officer Buckle's school assemblies are dull, dull, dull, and the children of Napville just sleep, sleep, sleep. That is, until Gloria the police dog is invited along! Stealthily pantomiming each safety tip behind Officer Buckle's back, Gloria wins the children's hearts. Meanwhile Officer Buckle assumes the cheers and laughter are all for him. As the master comedian Jerry Lewis once explained, every slapstick artist needs a straight man! Children will be highly entertained by the laugh-out-loud, adorable illustrations in this 1996 Caldecott Medal winner, while learning the value of teamwork and a pawful of nifty safety tips. 5-0 out of 5 stars Officer buckle & gloria (Caldecott Medal Book)
This is an excellent book for k-2 classes. Our school has joined our Police Department in (adopt a police dog). This means that we help raise money for the police department to help provide care and the tools that our police dog might need. This book helped our students understand the relationship between the policeman and his dog. The children understood that policeman are there to help us in many ways and giving safety tips is one of the ways they can help us.I like the fact that this book is also mentioned in The Mailbox magazine and you can go on-line to the Mailbox site and get worksheets for the students to do in relation to the story. It is worth buying.
5-0 out of 5 stars Always Entertaining
We've had this book a few years now, and my son, now 6, never tires of it. It's one of his favorites, and I really like it too. As other reviewers have mentioned, the pictures are great, and there's so much detail in them that they're fun to look at again and again.

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!!!!!
This books deals great with strangers. It also shows not to judge a person by the outside. The only thing it needs is to tell kids what to do if a stranger does capture them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for!
I think this was the perfect book to teach my son about strangers.I tried to introduce the idea to him myself, but I couldn't explain what a stranger was without scaring him.He already likes the Berenstein Bears so this put a tough subject on his level and did a great job explaining the differences in strangers.I would recommend this book to everyone with a young child and I will be purchasing more copies for my nephews as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
I claim 16 years experience with pre-schoolers and choosing books by the 1000s for them annually. This one is also well-endorsed by 911 dispatchers: my husband actually showed it around many 911 dispatch sites where he installs/repairs the systems. They think it's great! We found this fabulous book for a 2 year old "grand-friend" who loves it and learned her address before age 3 using it.Read the other reviews covering content/presentation: I agree, but I just wanted to add reactions of professionals as added endorsements.I'll be getting this title for all our grandkids in future!

5-0 out of 5 stars Knowledge is Power.... better to have your child prepaired!
I think this is a fanastic book! This board book has a telephone keypad to help your child practice how to dial 911 and what to do. If the number dialed is done so inccorrectly it gives you a sound to let you know you dialed it wrong, but when dialed correctly you hear a man's voice say " 911, then a bell, then the sound of a firetruck and then the man again saying good job. This book walks your child through each step making sure the child knows to say their name and home address.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Learning Book for Preschoolers
I purchased this book to start to teach my 3 year old about calling 9-1-1.The phone actually works. When you dial 911 correctly, it sounds the alarm and says good job.If you dial incorrectly, it makes a beeping noise. The book does not detail the emergencies, but teaches the basics of giving your name and some circumstances of why you may have to call 911.My daughter likes playing with the phone and practicing dialing 911.Hopefully, she will never have to use it but it is good to be prepared. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Smart not scared
This book is great for normalizing personal safety. It works personal safety in with the usual "hold hands when crossing the street" type messages. The thing I love most about this book is that it addresses intuition the one thing that can really help keep kids safe.It DOESN'T promote the message that only strangers hurt you which is of vital importance.Kids learn best by repitition and this book lets you repeat information using colorful well done illustrations (notice the man bothering the little girl does not 'look' scary). It's a terrific tool and I highly recommend it as a way to introduce personal safety to young children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for young children - a must have!
I would recommend this book to every parent with a young child. It covers lots of different kinds of safety, including that no one should touch you where your bathing suit covers. And stranger danger. There's nothing too scary for a small child, unlike some other "lesson" books I've bought, like a lesson book I bought on anger by Adolph Moser which said some people get so mad they kill.I didn't have to edit out anything in this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Important fire safety for small children
This book provides important fire safety messages in a way that is not frightening to small chidren. And the storybook format makes it more likely that the messages will be reinforced by the parent or family member reading to their child.Several important fire safety rules are included; don't hide in the burning building, get low and crawl to safety, get out of a burning building quickly, meet at the agreed-upon meeting place, call 911, don't go back into the burning building, etc.A delightful and important book for young children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good learning tool for tough subject
This book is a great way to start teaching your kids about appropriate and inappropriate touching. This is a tough subject, and I didn't want to scare my little ones about this, and this book does a great job of showing children how to be assertive and say "NO" when someone wants to touch the child or wants the child to touch them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Teach Your Children
This is a book with a message that cannot be stressed enough. One major message that cannot be overemphasized is that abusers are NOT always strangers.Very young children are provided with tools of empowerment in this book and I like the direct way this serious topic of improper touching is addressed. While the illustrations are somewhat bland and lacking in color, that still does not detract from the book's main message.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very needed...
There are many plusses to this book. That it was even written and is available is a HUGE plus.It is a message that children need to hear...over and over and over...That it is their body. That they have the right to feel *good* or *not good* about what someone is doing to it...and that they can say that, LOUDLY.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Fire Safety Story
When I picked this book up from the library, I was worried that it might just be a book version of episode from the episode "D.W. All Fired Up" on the "Arthur" television series. Fortunately, it isn't. It's a unique and beautifully illustrated story about fire safety that teaches children what they need to know and also manages to entertain in the process. D.W. fans will love seeing D.W. in her firefighter's hat as the "fire boss" as well as when she was just a little baby. The story is generally kept pleasant throughout, without arguing between Arthur and D.W. It also has a surprising and satisfying ending.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great fire safety tips for preschoolers!
This book teaches a lot of important saftey steps in the event of a fire.My preschool child really enjoys the book and had fun placing the stickers on the appropriate spots. 5-0 out of 5 stars Safety with a touch of humor
This "safety guide" is a perfect all around book for parents to read and review with children. The text is simple and covers 1-2 page reviews of common places and events that require safe practice. Topics include home, yard, meals, fire, animals, on wheels, playground, camping, car, beach, trips, first aid, cold weather and night safe practices. The illustrations are humorous and make some of the potentially scary ideas not so scary, yet the book still has a serious tone. The pictures clearly illustrate (and parents can certainly discuss them) what the text is saying for both younger nonreaders and the older elementary age readers. And the dinosaur topic is sure to appeal to a broad range of ages. I have purchased or checked out from the library several specific topic safety books (strangers, fire) but this one is a great addition because it includes many subjects not necessarily worthy of an individual book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone Should Read This Book
My son brought this book home from school and asked me to read it. He told me his teacher had read it to his class and it was important to him. So a few days later I took some time to read it ,partly because I knew he would keep asking until I did. I was instantly drawn into the story and finished it quickly. This book both tells a story and gets its message across so well . This book made me laugh and cry and put alot of thought into my own family and what is important. Every parent and child should read this book, and talk about it. And EVERYONE should wear a helmet when they ride a bike. Though that is not the only lesson to take from this story it is unmistakeable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Alphabet Book
This is a really nice book to learn about firefighters. The pictures are bright. The fire is really vivid and a couple of the pages might scare really young children. It would be a good tool for teacher's to use during Fire Prevention Week.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ABCs and Firefighters to Boot, Great!
My almost three-year-old son Devon loves fire engines. He gets so excited whenever we're out and one goes roaring by, siren screaming. He loves books too and he already knows his ABCs, both upper and lower case and this book shares the credit with a few others and his loving and attentive parents for giving him this gift of the Alphabet as such an early age. 5-0 out of 5 stars Commonsense guide, appealing to a variety of ages
This book gives clear, concise descriptions of how a child or young adolescent might handle the unexpected--embarassing, frightening or even life threatening situations. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great choice for special education teachers and SLP's
This is a good tool for a special education teacher or Speech language pathologists' bag of tricks. It works great with small groups of students and can be adapted for classroom discussions. It is especially useful when working with children who have pragmatic difficulties.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Resource for Young Children
We went through this book by reading aloud one topic each day.I love the format : each topic presents a safety hazzard; you brainstorm with the children for responses to the danger; then, by turning the page, the appropriate responses are revealed. My young children were really encouraged when they discovered that some of their reponses were right!Note : my 7yo liked the book so much that she read it through by herself after our first reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every parent and young child should share this book.
This is a very good book to discuss many safty concerns without the lecture style that kids usually tune out.I feel much more secure about my children's safty since we went through this book togeher. One liked it so much that we went through it twice. The book is divided into seven chapters:At Home, At School and on the Way, At play, Out and About, First Aid, Just for Fun, and Pages for Parents. Each chapter has 12 to 15 sections which cover a specific issue such as "How to Dial 911".The section has one page that has an illustration and a one paragraph description of a situation.Read the paragraph and ask the child what they would do.The child then responds. This is a great way to get to know your child's maturity level, reasoning skills, and common sence. On the second page of the section there is a good discussion of the ideal response to the situation posed on the preceding page.My five year old had no trouble comprehending this and my 11 year old also seemed to be learning some things.AN IMPORTANT NOTE:My five year old didn't sleep well after we did the section titled "Prowler".She had just never thought of such a thing before and it seemed to unnerve her. Also, I liked the common sence response in the "Gun in the House" section. No hysterical political B.S., just leave the area and tell an adult. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of concrete examples
I liked the concrete examples used to illustrate the process of differentiating whether secrets should be kept. Also the theme of achieving competency in learning this skill of how to differentiate; this was supported by open ended questions that allow for interaction and a sense of achievement over correctly discriminating.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is very useful
We all have secrets, but for some kids, secrets can be confusing. This is a great book to read to or with young children, who need to understand the difference between a good secret and a toxic secret.I use it in my practice all the time, and it helps children realize they ae not alone, and that not all secrets are fun, and some even need to be shared with a trusted adult.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misses By Miles
I was disappointed in this book because it does not address many of the critical issues involving sexual abuse.I don't like the way the book leans heavily on the tired old "stranger danger" routine.Statistics have shown time and again that in the majority of cases, children know their abusers.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Every Toddler - Reinforcement of Safety Rules
This is a very basic story about a duck who isn't allowed to swim with the other ducks until he learns the rules. The main ideas of the story are repeated several times throughout the book and set to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. The song goes "Don't jump in 'til you learn to swim, cover your chest with a safe life vest.A grown up must watch you in the pool. You'll be safe if you learn these rules."
    5-0 out of 5 stars Life-saving lessons
This is a wonderful resource for parents, teachers and coaches.Stewie the Duck is one of the few books available that addresses drowning, one of the most significant injury-related risks our children face. The authors teach children critical survival skills in a loving, age-appropriate, and fun way.Children really enjoy the CD, and being able to incorporate music makes the lessons fun and effective. This adorable, intelligent book was so impressive that we utilized it in our water safety curriculum program, and have received very positive feedback about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book can save lives.
I teach many children to swim, but this book can save more lives than any swimming lesson program, because it can reach so many more children. After reading Stewie The Duck Learns To Swim, children will remind their parents about proper water safety habits! They'll say things like "Mom, I want to go swimming; will you watch me?" or "I want to go swimming, but I need to have my life vest on first."Even more exciting, children will understand how important it is to take swimming lessons, and even older kids who may be tempted to swim in unofficial swimming holes, reservoirs, etc., may very well thing twice before doing so.Read more
