Not Age Appropriate
I bought this book for my four-year old.The age recommendation is four to eight.The text is entirely too graphic and detailed for children of this age.Parts of the book read like KISS lyrics or soft-porn.While this book is factually accurate and contains anatomically correct pictures, it is NOT age-appropriate.

This was how I learned "the facts of life" :)
I remember thinking this was a great book when I was a little kid. I agree with the reviewer who said that it's most appropriate for small children; I was probably 5 or 6 when my mom gave it to me. I remember it being very cute, and not the least bit distasteful. Half of my family works as delivery room nurses, so I was asking lots of questions early on! I know folks whose parents were so embarrassed about giving "the talk" that they learned everything from kids on the school bus, etc. This book is a great way of presenting information in a way young children can understand, without having to lie to them or change the subject.

Pictures are a little much...
Other than the picture of mommy and daddy in the bath tub together, I think this is a pretty good book.It puts this part of life in todler terms.If you are easily offended by graphics, don't buy this book. ... Read more

Fabulous introduction to "Birds and Bees"
I purchased this book after sitting cross-legged on the floor at a major bookstore with a whole slew of books on the subject.I picked this one for a number of reasons including the fact that it discusses different types of families -- this was a huge issue to me because my daughter was adopted as an "older child".
A Book with an AGENDA
Well, it is an okay book, if you tear out pages 31 & 32 (which explain and illustrate homosexual relationships). These two pages are completely inappropriate and unnecessary. Also, be forewarned that on page 42, the writer states that abortion is just a "medical way to end a pregnancy".She makes it sound like a safe, natural and healthy alternative to family planning. It is so obvious that the writer is pushing her liberal "agenda" on our innocent children.What a shame. If you do not share her personal views, stay away from this book.

Oh My Gosh.I LOVE THIS BOOK.MY SON.........LOVES THIS BOOK.I thought it would be a good ice breaker to open communication about sex. Although I have started talking to him about sex, it was still an uncomfortable topic for the both of us.Trying to master the clinical side of things as well as the human /real side of things.Not giving too much at a time but trying to make sure he gets what he needs.It is a stressful balance.

It's Perfectly Normal
Well what *IS* normal anyway?If normal to you is giving your child a book with lots of comic style nudity, directions for masterbating, exactly HOW to have sex (etc.) then you might want to grab this and run!If your child is average to above average intellectually he or she will have a full understanding of how to pleasure him or herself and how to perform the deed by the time they are finished.Of course there are warnings of pregancy, sickness (STD'S), and death (AIDS) if they are to do this while unprotected, so no worries there.You'd have to see the book to believe it.I was shocked when I started looking through it, and was doubling over with laughter that I had actually considered giving this to my 10 year old son.Actually, I did hand it to him in the car before I actually looked at it and he was shocked by the second page, gave it back and said "I think this is WAY too old for me Mama", and it turned out he was right!I'll never hand him something like that again without looking first.

Not age appropriate.Shocking.
I purchased this for my 11 year old son.I am so thankful that I read this book before giving it to him or going straight to discussing it.The pictures are hand drawn but graphic.Far too much detail for the target audience. Kids need to know about sexuality but they don't need to know EVERYTHING before they are even teen-agers.I would be upset to find this in a school library.This book definitely needs to be used with supervision. I returned this book as I believe its content is inappropriate for the cover advertised age of 10 years old.

One of the Best Books on the Subject
This is one of the best books on the subject of sexuality for children. Presented in plain talk with nicely drawn illustrations, it's neither too graphic nor too cartoonish for the 10-12 year old set. It covers a lot of topics they need/want to know about, and it's handled very tactfully.

Great Book
My son is actually reading and enjoying the book. As a teenager he has many questions but he is hesitant to ask. This book came handy it covers wide range of subjects and answers questions in a direct way.

Like a textbook
My 12 year old son keeps this book in a stack by his bed, but finds it too clinical--like a textbook.He likes "What's Going on On There" better because it's has a more humorous approach.As time goes on, however, he may appreciate the deeper lever of detail and information provided here.

A helpful resource
While no book on this subject is going to cover everything exactly the way you might prefer, this book does a very good job of covering a variety of topics related to sexual development.The material is presented in an easy-to-read, factual manner.After reviewing the book myself, I gave it to my 12 year old son, who looked at me as if to say "I know this stuff already".Yet the next day, he thanked me for giving him the book and said it had cleared up some misunderstandings he had.We were then able to talk about some of his questions and impressions from the book. ... The Alternative Route to Men's Souls
Although the objective of reaching through to men's souls without the deception of artificial courtship to produce mere sexual access is admirable, there is a danger that women will be led to imagine that sexual independence of women may be acceptable to men.
Excellent Resource
Twenty-two year old recent college graduate Amber Madison has penned a non-fiction book about sex & sexuality that puts it on the line for young girls (and their parents). Nothing is off limits in Hooking Up-A Girls All-Out Guide to Sex and Sexuality (Prometheus Books). Amber starts with the basics (like describing the various sexual organs), and gets down to the details that some people may be apprehensive to ask about in conversation. From vaginal discharges, yeast infections, sexually transmitted diseases to pregnancy it's all here.
Great resource for teens -- and their parents!

A good primer for younger teenagers.
This is a primer for younger teenagers. It is well written, although it needs to be updated in 2006. It is a textbook more than a think piece. It is a good starter book for parents and younger teenagers.

Changing Bodies out of date
I was very disapointed with the book. Expanded third edition was deceiving because I thought it was new - my oversight.The book is out of date - I oversee a Center that teaches sex education and this was not helpful.

Good book for 4 year olds
My daughter has been asking more and more questions about the differences between boys and girls and about how babies grow (due in part to the number of family members who are currently pregnant). We answer her very frankly, and she seems satisfied with our responses; however, we thought it might be a good idea to read her a book that could perhaps show her some illustrations and present some information we might not have addressed fully, to clarify a little more.
Great introductory book for 4-9 year olds
I read this book to each of my 3 kids when they were about 5 years old.All of them had lots of questions and the book was written just at their level; not too much information but enough so that they understood.I think it's a great book to start with!

Great!
This is a wonderfully illustrated, easy to understand, easy to read, unintimidating book. It's intended audience is Pre-School thru Grade 3 which I feel is critical information for anyone looking into buying this book. It is a wonderful book for those parents who want their children to learn at an early age the correct names of body parts and the basics of where babies come from. This book has been on my children's (ages 4-9) book shelf since the oldest one was two years old! It sits on the shelf right along-side all the other 100's of bedtime books. They go back to it time and time again either to read to themselves or to be read to. From the start they learned the accurate words for body parts, understand the basics, and take in more and more information/digest the information as they grow older. As the oldest (9) has questions she openly asks them. I either go over it again from the book or we talk openly. Parents who wait to discuss the topics until age 9 will find this book to be an untimidating first book -- very good. Great Book, But First ....
At last someone wrote a how-to guide for parents on this subject. This is the one to use. But before you do, make sure you have a handle on your own values. You'll probably have to answer questions like, "WHY is something right or wrong, good or evil, moral or immoral?" "Because" isn't too good an answer. For that part of it, the best book for boneing up on character, morals, and ethics before you present yourself as expert to your kids is a book on just that subject titled "WEST POINT", by Norman Thomas Remick. Then use this excellent book, "TEN TALKS ..." to do your thing.

I found this book in the store after a friend recommended it to me. Hard to talk about subject
I thought this book was great - it was really colorful. The overall feel reminded me of the book "Now I Know the Ten Commandments". I recommend it to anyone.

Well Done
I got this for my very curious 6.5yo and I agree it is very well done and very tasteful. I do think you will have to be dealing with a mature child if they are 5 & 6 and reading this book. I agree with the others, that this is geared more towards 7 and up. No matter the age, I think it is best that my children learn about sex early and what is about from me. She has already asked a ton of questions and I am glad she trusts me enough to ask.

Informative
This book, in the "God's Design for Sex" series is a good book to read with your child. The only complaint I have with the series is that I think the information given is too explicit for the ages recommended.I would wait until my child is at least 8 to read this book with him.The same with the others in the series, I will be waiting until the last age recommended (or beyond).The series did do a good job showing Sex and our bodies as God designed them to be - important to teach, especially if they will be having "sex/puberty education" from the public school system. ... Please read this book!!
This book was such an amazing inspiration to me.I am married to a youth pastor so working with teenage girls is a way of life for me. I read this book in preparation for a "Pure Freedom" retreat in which I will be a mentor.After reading the book, all I can say is I can't wait to see God in action in those girls lives through this book!!What a down to earth, fun, and MAJORLY effective way Dannah has of ministering the truth about sex and purity to a generation of young women being constantly lied to about their value and sexuality.If you are a parent of pre or teenage daughters I would highly recommend that you read this book for yourself and then read it with your daughter because it is and awesome opportunity for you to come along side of her and help her grow into the woman of God she should be.I plan on using this book as a ten week bible study with the girls in my youth group and I can't wait!!

Inspiring
I am so thankful that I found this book during one ofmy perusals of the Christian section of the bookstore.Gresh has written a wonderful book that is highly inspiring and encouraging to those who want to bring purity into their marriage.Not only does she write in a way that makes one proud to have remained a virgin, but she also ensures that those who may have already taken that step don't feel condemned or left out.There is no judgmental attitude whatsoever. There is no effort to make sex seem like it is only for procreation and that if people are religious they are not to enjoy sex. Each chapter delves into how purity is obtained and maintained and the importance of bringing such purity to the marital bed.Instead of writing a book that tries to drum into you that you should remain a virgin because otherwise you will go to hell, Gresh spells out clearly how wonderful the intimacy is when shared for the first time with your new spouse and how this intimacy is directly related to God's love for us.I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to wait until they are married for having sex the first time, or who has had sex, butnow wants to stop andabstain until marriage.It will encourage you and even make you excited about that special gift that God has given to us. ... Necessary Book for Toddlers
Many people think that this book, and the topic of sex and sexuality, should be avoided until the child asks about it.They hope such questions will arise around puberty.YOU SHOULD TEACH YOUR KIDS ABOUT SEX AND THEIR BODIES WHEN THEY'RE OLD ENOUGH TO WALK AND INTERACT WITH OTHER HUMANS.Why?Because if you wait until puberty to talk about "parts" and "making love", kissing, etc., you're leaving thirteen years during which your child can and --10%+ for young boys and 20%+ for young girls--will get sexually abused by somebody who takes advantage of the fact that they don't know any better.
Appropriate
I first heard about this book on the news. I think it is an appropriate "tool" in aiding your children "over time". At different ages it will be extremely useful, we do not plan to go over the whole book at one time with our daughter, but at the different ages she advances to. I think its great to use correct names for body parts, we should not be ashamed to do so. And its great to understand how the body works. I was never taught about ovaries and thought I was dieing when I had my first period. No one ever taught me about sex which is why I had sex at 16, people who teach their children in advance and at appropriate ages will instill in them important knowledge and give this the upper hand vrs. other children who's parents aren't telling them anything! ... Way too much information for a young girl
I bought this book with the intention of giving it to a girl who just turned 12. Both her mother and I agreed it was way to much information and the illustrations were too graphic for a 12 year-old. The intent of the book is commendable but some parents may take issue with the author's opinions on the subjects covered. It might be better for an older girl but parents/relatives should read the book carefully before handing it over to even a young teenager.

this book I really don't know what to say
I'm not finished but i'm already enjoying the book,i'm reading about "All About Having Periods" it's telling me everything about why i'm having headaches. Best Book for Us!
I've looked at a lot of books and this one is great,!Unlike other books, it does not mention anything about boys, yet.I feel like for a young girl, "Let's learn about your body first"boys later.Also unlike other books, it doesn't go overboard with talking about a first trip to the gynecologist or anything explicit about sex. Lovely and Fruitful!
This was a wonderful. The bit about the horses running in the field of corn was my favourite! Sammy the Lamb was my best character. I hated snoopy the snoop, though.

What's Happening to my body?-It taught me alot!
I am 11 years old and I am not afraid of Puberty anymore! Now that I have read this book and completed the activities, I feel great! Wonderful, engaging introduction to puberty for girls
Although the main topic is menstruation, this book covers all of the physical changes a girl can expect as she approaches and moves through puberty.It addresses, in an interesting and calm tone, all of the questions a girl might face, from where the blood comes from, to being patient if your breast development is slower than your best friend's.It is reassuring, thorough, and my 10-year-old couldn't put it down!I found her awake way past bedtime, reading this book.She is engrossed in it, and this has led to some wonderful discussion between us, on the responsibilities of growing up, and needing to respect your own body.
Not Happy
I was extremely excited when I discovered this book.I wanted it for my ten-year-old-daughter.From reading other reviews, the book was suppose to be about girls becoming wowen (getting their periods).I was disappointed to find that the book contained too much information about sex and a picture of male genitals.I wanted my daughter to learn about her own genitals--not a male's genitals.

There is nothing underground about this book at all.
Basso's book is intended for younger teenagers, but it promotes abstinence, and is not reality based at all. As a high school teacher, he has to be conservative in this society, but today's teenagers will not accept his message, nor should they. The book is really sex-negative, and as such, it is not very relevant to today's teenagers, especially those 15-19.

Brilliant!
Michael Basso does a masterful job of taking a sensitive topic and breaking it down into laymans terms for broad understanding.He uses science, reality, ethical values, and an obvious profound knowledge of what teens are looking for, what they need, and how best to communicate these messages and lessons.
Underground Guide to Teenage Sexuality
A useful guide about contraceptives, barrier methods, waiting/abstinence, and general questions surrounding sexuality. This book presents itself from a teenage perspective and can be useful to reacing out to this demographic, especially when it comes to explaining things that parents find it difficult to talk about. ... One of our favorites
We bought this for my 3 year old son when my wife was pregnant with our second boy. He loved it and still does, even though he is now 5 and his baby brother is now two! Highly recommended.

Perfect read for a sibling
I wish I had this book when my oldest was about to become a big brother. He was 4 when his brother was born, and even though he understood everything, it would have been nice to have a book for him to read. Him being such a great reader, he would have loved it.
Best preparing for baby book for AP parent
I looked at quite a few "new baby" books before selecting this one. As another reviewer said, there are a few pages addressing the physical changes mommy will be going through during the pregnancy. I agree that these could have been minimized.

This book is a must-have for any Library shelf that serves teens.It is written in a style appealing to teens and includes short, one or two page summaries of ways to cope with the many issues teens face when questioning their sexuality.It also provides excellent, current resources for teens, from crisis lines to 'safe' (moderated) chat sites. I especially enjoyed the section dealing with 'coming out' to parents and family.It provided experiences from other teens who have (the good, the bad, and the ugly), and also possible responses parents might have when a teen tells them he/she is gay.In addition, it listed possible, respectful ways to respond to less-than-accepting parents.A fantastic compilation of stories, insights, and resources for teens.

wonderful book
i remember being a pre-teen, leafing through many books written for young women that followed an "our bodies ourselves" format. these books were ok, but never what i was really looking for. i didn't want information on how to ask boys to dance or how to apply lipstick- i wondered where the chapters entitled "when you don't feel like the rest or the girls" or "but what if i don't like boys?" were.
