4-0 out of 5 stars My 5 year old son loves this series of books
We have the other books written by Karma Wilson, but this one wasn't as good as her others. It still had the beautiful and fun illustrations, but the story wasn't as captivating. It's still a good book, but I recommend her other "Bear" books. My son memorized them due to the great sing song words she used to describe all the details!

3-0 out of 5 stars Bear asks who?
This 4th book in the series in pleasing and entertaining with a dash of suspense.
5-0 out of 5 stars Another Big Hit!!!
Our daughter loves this series and this new book is no exception!!! Our two year old has most of these books memorized and with the catchy lyrics and rythmes she feels like she's actually reading...which every parent hopes to accomplish!!!Every chance we get we purchase a book from this author, so dont limit yourself to just this one...all her books are catchy, fun and will leave you with smiles at bedtime!!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars very helpful for my daughter
This book was very helpful for my daughter with selective mutism. She realized for the first time that she was not the only kid with this problem. When we received it she read it every night and started to talk about how she felt.We shared this book with her teacher and her best friend, they too had no idea that this was how she felt.My daughter is 8 years old and this book was maybe a bit on the young side for her.It would be great for younger children with selective mutism and for those who need to understand how they feel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for parents, teachers and child
I have found all of Dr. Shipon-Blum's materials to be very helpful in the treatment of SM. It is hard sometimes to explain this condition to others in the family, school, etc....this book gives a basic story of a little girl with SM, how she feels, how she acts and how her parents and teachers work to help her. My SM 6-yr-old and his sisters enjoy reading this story, too, and although he does not experience all of the same symptoms, he does relate to Katie, which I think has been helpful. It is a good springboard for discussion with your child. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Shy but functioning mouse.
I was at the library with my children tonight when I saw this book on the shelf. The title intrigued me as I have a 4 year old son Charles (we call him Charlie) who can be shy from time to time.I stopped what we were doing retrieved the book, and read it to him and my 2 daughters.
1-0 out of 5 stars VERY DISAPPOINTING
I have been looking for books to help my child with SELECTIVE MUTISM begin to understand his difficulties with talking in public. We like so many of Rosemary Wells' other books, so I was excited to find this one. Luckily, I previewed it first! The pressure from Charles' parents and the ridicule and name-calling because Charles won't talk are APPALLING. How is this supposed to help a child begin to feel good about themselves?? If anything, this book seems to want to shame a shy child into talking, not build his confidence. Sure, Charles rises to the occasion and saves his babysitter. In the end, though, he realizes no breakthrough and gains nothing from his heroic act. Do not read this book to your child if you want to help him/her get over shyness!

1-0 out of 5 stars unfortunate name-calling in this book
We are tried and true Rosemary Wells fans, and are familiar with most of her books.I borrowed this one from the library, and was disappointed to find Charles' parents expressing their frustration through language like "another mother would have spanked you" for not saying thank you or goodbye (maybe Wells could have the mother model good manners rather than threatening punishment)and the father actually calling him names for not participating in football, which Dad forced on him. What a negative approach to modeling the behavior you want your child to adopt, never mind giving parents the idea that it's OK to treat a child in this manner.Needless to say, I edited it heavily when I read it, then returned it to the library post haste! Not one for my library! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not for 3 year olds
There was too much book for this topic. It looks like it would be geared to a 3 -4 yr old but there is no way it can hold their attention for the entire length of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for shy kids!
We stumbled upon this book at our local library as my then 3yr old son loves any books with dogs. We've subsequently purchased it. Turns out this book is not only a great book of 3 short stories, but it also has a great lesson too.My son is pretty shy and this book is about, what else, but a shy dog, as well as a bossy dog and some bossy cats.It explains that while the dogs are different, they both have good qualities.Buster finds his way to shine even in the shadow of "Phoebe".

5-0 out of 5 stars captivating to the last page!
I was going to write that my young daughter adores this book, but I have to admit that I love it too! She's read it cover to cover many times over, and now selects her "favorite parts" for me to read aloud at bedtime. Coville has authored a whole slew of books, but this is the one I like best, with the exception of his Shakespeare adaptations. The book is full of enjoyable characters and intriguing plot twists.
4-0 out of 5 stars Juliet Dove Queen of Love
You might think Juliet Dove Queen of Love is a lovey dovey book just for girls. It's actually a very interesting book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Total magic
Funny, magical and gripping. The full cast presentation is lively and easy to follow. I enjoy the musical sound effects and multi voiced presentation.

Editorial Review

When class bully Irwin taunts Violet about her fat knees (they're not) ordeadly sewer gas smell (she doesn't), all she wants to do is shrink away. Thethought of being in the class play about the solar system makes her itch andscratch and twirl her hair. But when she's alone or with her best friend, Opal,Violet is a master performer, mimicking her classmates and retaliating againstIrwin with razor-sharp wit. Her chance for real-life revenge comes at lastduring the play, when she plays the offstage role of Lady Space. On openingnight, when Irwin, a.k.a. Mars, starts to spin out of control and forgets hislines, Violet saves the day (but not without a little of her savage humor).Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WHOCANFORGET"MyVery ExcellentMotherJ-S-U-N-P" ?!
School plays! There is always someone who has the shudders while others flutter in the limelight. Violet, that shyest of all 4th graders, is chosen to be "Lady Space" - - narrator for a production about the planets & other heavenly bodies. Violet's body is given to blushing deeply and shrinking under school desks. Cari Best's clever story will encourage many children with/or/without dramatic tendencies to brave the elements and shine forth.
5-0 out of 5 stars Shrinking Violet - More than just a wonderful story
A rare and delightful book about social anxiety disorder in childhood.Best aptly describes Violet's symptoms in an accurate and endearing way and communicates a basic truth of dealing with social anxiety - it gets better when you do the things you are afraid of.Beautifully illustrated and writen in an endearing style, children love the book and learn as they are giggling. As a psychologist, I've used this book in therapy with several children. It is a wonderful vehicle for helping them to understand and overcome their social and performance anxieties.

5-0 out of 5 stars Caring
This is a touching book about caring. It recognizes the nature of shy children without treating this nature as some kind of disability. I think it is OK not to be pushy and aggressive. Sometimes shy children are an asset. They often are smart and sensitive to the needs of others. We need more sensitive people and more books like this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable!
I have a shy little guy.An adorable story!!!!I thought it might be a little long for a 3 year old, but he sat through it and enjoyed it.Still, probably the right length for children ages 5 and up.

5-0 out of 5 stars A bright and hopeful book.
Young Sebastian is so shy that he barely speaks aloud, even though he has a lot to say. When he finds a pair of roller skates on a park bench, he practices with them for days. As his skating slowly improves, he also finds confidence to share his knowledge and feelings. The illustrations capture Sebastian's joy as his face and world brighten. Part of the book's charm is that change doesn't come immediately for Sebastian. He builds on small successes, and can hardly believe the wonderful changes in himself.

5-0 out of 5 stars An entertaining story about growth and self-discovery through applying oneself to a new talent
Sebastian's Roller Skates is an award-winning picturebook by Joan de Deu Prats about a very shy young boy who has a lot to say but can't bring himself to talk much. One day he finds a pair of old roller skates in the park - and as he tries them on and practices, he learns not only how to skate, but also much more! The whimsical color illustrations by Francese Rovira are the perfect complement to the entertaining story about growth and self-discovery through applying oneself to a new talent. Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars A helpful model for shy kids?
This book tells the story of Sammy, a shy little boy whose dog runs away. To find Sparky, Sammy asks a number of grownups (people he would ordinarily be too shy to talk to) if they have seen his dog. This pays off, and Sammy finds his pet. The experience of approaching people and asking for help ismeant to provide a successful model: The child hearing or reading the storyis supposed to learn that talking to people doesn't have terribleconsequences. The story and illustrations are appealing, and may be helpfulto some shy children. There is also a brief essay to provide adults withinformation about shyness in children; it includes exercises parents canuse. There is, however, one problem with the book: The fact is that talkingto grownups DOES sometimes have terrible consequences for children. Kidswho are trusting and approach adults are at increased risk of becomingvictims of child molesters. (In fact, one tactic molesters use to lurechildren away is to ask them for help in finding a lost pet-- a situationvery close to the one in the story.) There are, in other words, goodreasons for children to be wary of adults. Parents will have to askthemselves whether their child's shyness is so severe that they need tointervene, or whether to be glad that the child is behaving in a way thatmay make him safer in a dangerous world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lasting classic
It was a serendipitous moment when I discovered Orlando's Little-While Friends sitting on the bookshelf at my sister's place. I assumed it had been thrown out or given away along with all the other cherished objects of our childhoods. I was yet more surprised to discover the book was still in print. It was over twenty years ago in Canada, as a boy of four or five, that I first read this beautiful story, and its appeal remains strong even today.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious Read
Comedy Girl by Ellen Schnieber is a hilarious realistic fiction and I reccommend it to all. It was an extremely good book about following your dreams, not matter what others think or say.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious New Teen Fiction
Seventeen-year-old Trixie Shapiro is shy, and awkward, but she's also funny. Really funny. Which is why her best friend since Freshman year at Mason High, known as Jazzy, or "Shrimp," just knew that she had to sign Trixie up to do a stand-up comedy act at Senior Talent Night. When Trixie finds out what Jazzy has done, she's absolutely horrified. She can't possibly get up in front of the entire student body and perform. She's guaranteed to choke. But that's not the worst of it, Trixie is quickly encouraged to perform at the local comedy club, and to her surprise, people actually like her. In fact, Trixie is so funny, that she creates a sure-fire comedy act that has put her on the fast-track to fame. It all seems like such a dream, especially the part where she falls head-over-heels in love with her long-time crush. Then the fun part wears off. Suddenly Trixie realizes that it's time to make a decision between being a normal teenager, or a big time comedic celebrity.
