5-0 out of 5 stars Everything has worked as written
My DH is using this and other books for a science and gadget class with 10 K-2 kids.He likes this book as the experiments are easy and fast paced enough to keep the kids' attention, a real issue with this bunch.
4-0 out of 5 stars A lot of parent/kid fun
I have bought many of these kinds of books for my now 5.5 year old. Each book is different, some with more stuff that is age appropriate than others, but I've ALWAYS manage to find at least a few things in these books to have an hour of fun father/daughter time. This book is no exception. The simple experiments on color, gravity and energy are quite simple, enjoyable to do, and my daughter did learn a thing or two.The old she gets, the more I'll be we will draw from this well written book.
5-0 out of 5 stars I like it!!!!
I disagree with Dixie who had written the previous review! The bookwas not written for 3 year olds! A good parent reviews the info and suggested age levels in the review section before buying. We have been very happy with these books. After buying one other, we bought this one and love it just as much. These experiments are simple to read and study. But the teach important science concepts so I am as happy as a mom can be...but again...I read the age level before buying the book! Someday I hope to make a list of recommended books...this will be one! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised
I picked up this book as a quick, teen-chick lit read. I wasn't expecting much. I was surprised at the message the book givesm as well as the range of topics covered by the book. Aside from the obvious "obesity" topic, and the related topics of both eating disorders and fad dieting, it also discusses date rape, dating, parent-child communication, death, peer pressure, friendships, and an impressive portrayal of the teenage psyche.

5-0 out of 5 stars funny and real
Virginia Shreves feels like she comes from the perfect family, with one blemish-- her.Her father is a top executive whose favorite hobby is ogling stick-thin women, her mother is a successful psychologist and a diet and exercise fanatic, and her two older siblings are blond, wafer-thin, and all-around perfect.Virginia, on the other hand, shops in plus sizes, consumes junk food daily, and adheres to the "Fat Girl Code of Conduct."As if all this isn't bad enough, her best friend just moved to Walla Walla (the complete opposite side of the country!), and she's afraid of her new "friend" Froggy Welsh the Fourth (his real name) will look up her shirt and never come back. Then an unexpected phone call changes everything, and Virginia's family no longer seems quite so perfect. This book will hit home for anyone who has ever felt self-conscious or has had to re-evaluate the choices they were making.

A favorite of the high school girls I read with, this book is not quite as funny as the title suggests. Yes, Mackler is hilarious, but she manages to touch a lot of major teen issues, from date rape to eating disorders. I do not come across as many reluctant girl readers, but when I do I always pull out a copy of this book. Not appropriate for younger kids, though. 5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing's Fair in Fifth Grade
Nothing's Fair in Fifth Grade is a great book. It's probably one of my favorite books I've read. It's about a girl who's overweight named Elsie Edwards. She is a new student in Ms. Hanson's fifth grade class. Elsie is on a really strict diet and can only eat what her mom puts in her lunch box. It's not much what is in her lunchbox, so she gets really hungry. She decides to steal the other sudents' money to buy candy. Everyone now knows her as the fat thief. But later a girl Jenifer finds out that things are not fair for Elsie either. Her mom is planning on sending her to boarding school. Jenifer starts to feel sorry for her, so she tries to help her. Later, everyone wants to help Elsie. At the end Elsie starts losing weight. I really loved this book. It has some kind of flow that makes you keep reading. I recommend it to people who like books about friendship.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lessons on how to cope with 5th grade
Nothing's Fair in Fifth Grade is a good read for ages 8-12. The book brings you into the story by having this extremely fat girl, who can't see her shoes, come into Mrs. Hanson's class. This fat girl named Elsie has other problems too, such as having a mother who hates her and classmates who tease her. But Elsie has two great things about her that help her: being great at math and being a good teacher. When Elsie helps the girls that tease her with their math, they begin to like her, and we learn not to judge people by how they look and that if you work hard at something it will pay off. If you are in the higher range of the ages it is a light read that could be done during a weekend. I thought the author, Barthe DeClement got the book moving well in the beginning but then she rushed through it very fast. Overall it I enjoyed it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wish they hadn't changed the book cover
This is one of my childhood books that I read again and again whenever I am in the mood to reminisce. I regret to see though, that they have changed the cover. For those of you who read this book over 15 years ago for the first time, you know what I'm talking about. The old cover gave you an excellent depiction of how obese Elsie really was, and therefore made everything, from her stealing money to the other students hating her more believable. ... Read more

FIRST, THIS DOES NOT PORTRAY THESE REAL DISEASES.THE INTENISITY IS FAR FROM WHAT YOU READ IN THE BOOK.YOU HAVE NO TIME FOR BOYS,FUN,FAMILY,ETC. ANYWAYS,AT THAT LEVEL OF GYMNASTICS,KIM WOULD NOT HAVE TIME FOR ANYOTHER THINGS BESIDES GYMNASTICS. SHE WOULD BE IN THE GYM FOR APPROXIMATELY 6 HOURS, 6 DAYS A WEEK. 1-0 out of 5 stars preachy and whiny
While this book brought up some very good issues about how terrible overweight people are treated, I found it preachy and many times got irritated with Lara's whining.
2-0 out of 5 stars an okay book
This book wasn't entirely all bad and the premise is an interesting idea, a story about a girl who was popular but gains weight. Some of the things I didn't like about the book was how she had a made up disease. I guess apparently the author thinks that unless you have a disease that you can stop fat from happening that is super easy to control. That is not true at all. Weight can be a real struggle even without a disease to make things worse. The made up disease also gave the main character, Lara an excuse to feel superior to the other fat people in the book which was lead to some very nasty thoughts from her about them. It would have been much better if Lara had been 118 pounds, then her family began to go through the chaos described in the book and then all the new pain in her life lead her to overeat even though she was still trying to work out and trying to cut calories but she was failing with controlling her weight because she couldn't stop secretly eating when she was alone and sad. Or maybe if she was 118 pounds, thought that she should go on a diet and then started to try to cut her calories too far and then ended up overeating and unwittingly putting herself in a battle of the diet and scarf down food cycle, wrecking her metabolism. That angle of it would have made her more relateable also. Who can relate to someone who has a made up disease? I suppose maybe you could if you ignore how she got fat and if you had a weight problem but then her comments of being superior to people who gained weights for other reasons besides her made up disease really kill the possible of that either. Another problem I had with the book was by the end of the last chapter, Lara seemed to have believed that she had went through a transformation and was a better person. I didn't really see that at all. Her boyfriend, Jett in the book comes to more relizations than Lara herself. By the end of the book, Lara is proud of herself for being more accepting of fat women and people who she sees as geeks but she was not mean to them in the first place. She only thought nasty things about them and even in the end of the book, when she was terribly overweight, she couldn't grasp the concept of dating a fat boy or seeing past his appearence even though he was really nice to her. I also didn't like how that this book couldn't make being fat positive at all. All the characters that were fat openly hated their bodies and were insecure. There was not one fat person who seemed okay with themselves. Even the obese teacher who became Lara's friend confesses that her handsome boyfriend hates her body and will probably leave her. I was hoping that when I read the part about the teacher having a typical attractive boyfriend that Lara would see that the boyfriend loved the teacher and didn't care if she was short or skinny or fat or tall or blonde haired or burnette, white or black. That message is totally spoiled by the teacher saying her boyfriend hates her appearence which was really sad. I guess the author didn't think that a attractive person could fall in love with a fat person. Yet another problem in the book was how Lara's life looked so perfect (even to Lara) in the beginning and then radically changed, not just appearence but her entire family. I could understand it if her life looked perfect to others on the outside but even Lara believed. So, the entire time she was thin, she was able to block out her family problems? That doesn't make sense. I would still recomend reading this if you are curious to know how it feels and how people treat you diffrently if you gain weight but you may find Lara's attuide off putting and mean.

5-0 out of 5 stars Six star read!
How many books are there that you pick up to read after dinner and you are still reading in your room at midnight and you haven't even gotten up to go to the bathroom?Life in the Fat Lane is one of those books. It starts with a beauty pageant resume for Lara, and it ends with her almost a hundred pounds fatter. It is one of those books that make you feel all kinds of emotions. You are mad at Lara for her attitudes at the beginning, and then you kind of feel bad for her, and then you are so happy at what she has learned because you have learned it too. The book is very easy to read and doesn't have the kind of flowery stuff that you find in so many other books that might be assigned in school. It is all about Lara and all about the story. I have just started to read it again. That is how good it is! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very touching and funny book.
I have a son who is struggling with his weight. I saw this book and thought I'd give it to him to read. While flipping through the pages I got hooked and decided to read it first. I was really touched. The writing is funny and sensitive. There are no cliche answers to the lead character's problems. It's quite moving the way he learns to find his own way and refreshing to see that losing weight is not the only key to his happiness. My son is currently reading it and tells me he enjoys it too. This is a very unique book and I strongly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can relate...
Tristan reminds me of a dear friend who went through many of the same trials...I would love to read the sequel about what happens to Tristan later in life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dough Boy
If you are a teenager or were one, you'll identify with some of the dilemmas facing the Tristan character.A fragile era of everyone's life, this particular teen's predicaments are acutely narrated. Phrases such as, "My face glowed like an embarrassment thermometer," remind adults of a vulnerable time and relate to those still in the throes of growing pains.Teen insensibility and insensitivity are cleverly crafted into an entertaining story.Tristan's tale may be unique but his feelings are universal. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Disturbing attitudes about weight
I read this book as an overweight kid, and looking back, I can't believe that I thought it carried positive messages. The main character's (Ned's) family eats as much as they want, but deny their son the same food during family dinners.Ned gets sent away from his friends (apparently because he's a fat kid) to an fat camp where he learns nothing about health, and his overweight bunkmates are horrible, theiving, binging stereotypes.
4-0 out of 5 stars Jelly Belly Rocks!!!
This is a comedy book about a kid named Ned that is overweight. Being the biggest kid in the 5th grade he wants to loose weight. His parents send him to a camp to gain self confidence, make friends, and of course loose weight. Ned enjoys the camp, but how will he loose weight with his Grandma always feeding him junk food. This book is hilarious! If you want to laugh your but off and have a whole new concept for the term jelly belly, then you have to read this book. The best things about this book are all the jokes, and the sense of realism. If you love funny books, than get this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reflections from a first generation reader
I was about the same age as the fictional Ned when this book first came out in the 1980's.And, like Ned, I also battled my weight.I thoroughly enjoyed the book then, and I would highly recommend it now.Robert Kimmel Smith takes on the complex problem of weight management and presents it in a humorous and age-appropriate manner, without being preachy or simplistic.Although some readers complained that the writing style was "dated," the material is even more relevant today since the problem of childhood obesity has gotten worse, not better, over the last twenty years.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best ones in the series...cant put it down! :-*
I recommend this book (and series) to teenage girls because you can really relate to the characters. Many girls struggle with their weight, but if they read this book, they might feel better about themselves. Also, this book shows girls what is a healthy choice to lose weight, and what is an unhealthy waste of time. The four girls in this series have many everyday problems that girls, mainly in their teens can relate to... including boys, family, and school. Also, this series is great because so many surprises occur that keep the pages turning. This is a great book and a great series...so I recommend this teen read.

5-0 out of 5 stars something every teen girl should read
As always Cathy Hopkins wrote a wonderful addition to the Mates, Dates series. In this one, after just getting back from there tour of Italy, Izzie battles a weight problem. She goes on many fad diets and programs. I think its really important for young girls to read this because it really tells how managing weight can be hard and what are some of the wrong ways of going about loosing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This book was just as funny as the rest of the series. It was exciting, and surprising at the end.As usual, it made me laugh a lot, and it was very refreshing and unique from other book series in general.I love the was Cathy Hopkins writes about how typical teenagers grow up in England and how it's so similar and different at the same time. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
the line "Camp Calliope, a prison camp for the overweight." was really what hooked me and i bought this book. i don't know what i was expecting, maybe that scene out of the Simpsons when Bart and Lisa go to Kamp Krustyor some of those horrible camps you hear about on talkshows where the kids get overworked and tortured, but Camp Calliope was definitely not like that at all! in the book it wasn't even IMPLIED that Camp Calliope was a bad place, the counselors were super supportive, the campers were nice, the food was alright, the activities were funm so i dunno where this 'prison camp' b.s. even came from.
5-0 out of 5 stars A fine story about unwilling changes - and fun
Nutritionist Deborah Blumenthal provides a fun summer story of a super-sized girl who is sent to an unusual camp: it's a camp for the overweight, and Cam is sent there to eat controlled portions, exercise, and change. She misses food and her best friend - and with humor relates a celery-toasting campfire and smuggled forbidden foods from home. FAT CAMP is a fine story about unwilling changes - and fun.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very cool book
I really liked this. It tells the story of a girl who goes to a fat camp for the summer. By the time the summer ends, she learns a lot more than just how to cut calories. In her bunk she meets a girl who has bulimia, and somebody else who's totally thin because she lost the weight before she got there and is desperate to stay thin. I got really drawn into Cam's struggle to find out who she is, and her relationship with Jesse, a hottie guitar player at the nearby boy's camp. ... Read more

All Ellie has are massivepanic attacks about her weight. So she decides to go on a diet. But instead ofcounting calories, Ellie just tries to stop eating altogether. Soon she'sstarving, miserable, and lying all the time to her friends and family. Luckily,a frightening encounter with a real anorectic, and an encouraging dose of arthistory from a handsome new teacher ("Beauty is just fashion. 5-0 out of 5 stars great
This if a great book (especially if you are pre/teens) because it deals with things that people actually feel and it gives such a morol which is a good thing you don't mostly get in some books and it teachesbe happy with the way you are. It reminds of the movie "when best friends kill". I would recommend this book to ANYONE

4-0 out of 5 stars Semi-Good
It was a good book and I think that Ellie just gets the idea that you have to be perfect. I was once in her shoes and I experianced the same thing she did so I relate more to it. Her friends are perfect so she envys them. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars a hugely disturbing children's book
As someone who has always been overweight, naturally I bristled at Stephen Cosgrove's _Catundra_.But the book isn't just about fat; it's far more troubling than that.It imparts the message that if other people make fun of you for being different, you're the one that ought to change. That Catundra *can* change is a matter of luck; that she is badgered into it is a tragedy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Catundra: Teaches the impotance of self worth
When I was a little girl I was overweight and this was my favorite book.It doesn't teach that obesity is bad, if you think it does you didn't truly READ the book.If you want to look at it as teaching tolorance of being fat feel free. But you know as a kid I never saw that the mole was working Catundra so she'd lose weight and be liked. He was teaching her to like herself.Teaching her to realize the importance of Self-worth, the importance of liking herself regardless of what you look like.Catundra starts liking herself and realising that she is a good worth while person long before she even realizes that she lost weight, before she realizes that her physical apperance had changed. This book isn't about being Fat and the 'evils' of it it teaches about how much more important it is to LIKE yourself regardless of other people's oppinions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Catundra:A delightful book showing kids the importance....
of healthy living through food and exercise. This book teaches children that food should not be an escape from reality, it should be a fuel for our bodies and minds.I read this book as a child and I received a copy as a gift the other day.I don't think that the writer of this book meant for people to take his story as saying that fat people and animals aren't accepted, like so many of you have written.I think he wants us to all learn the importance of healthy living.Catundra is my favorite book in the world.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious Chick Lit for Teens
Potty has decided to drag dear, plus-sized, and overly-confident Angel out of school a week early, simply to drag her, Mother, and Flossie off to Scotland for their annual Easter vacation. However, what is simply worse than the dreary Scottish weather, and the men in kilts, is the fact that lovely Mercedes, one of Angel's very best friends in the entire world, is moving to Florida with her ultra-glammy parents, and she may not be coming back. If only that were the only thing Angel had to worry about, but no...there's more. Potty is now on the warpath, protesting the haggis that Harrod's sells, and now Angel's entire family has been banned from the posh store, which means no more ultra-chic undergarments, and fabbity-fab-fab groceries for the many treats Angel loves to whip up. If that weren't bad enough, Angel keeps dreaming about slimeball Sydney. BLECH!!
