5-0 out of 5 stars review written by a 5 year-old
From one to five stars, this book is the best! I loved the adorable mice in "Whose Mouse Are You?" And I was amazed when I found out that a dog could disguise itself just by getting very dirty in "Harry the Dirty Dog." I'd love to give it thirty-zillion stars, for I'm giggling when I see Ferdinand sitting on a bumble bee!I am going to be reading lots more giant books, for this one is great!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book - so much variety and interesting stories!
My son and I love reading the 20th Century Children's Book Treasury. We have read from it every night for the last two months straight, and are still going! It is so much fun to discover new, unique stories. We would have never found many of these stories/books on our own. Some books come from different cultures. I have only heard of 6 or 7 out of 40 plus books included. With 40 plus stories, the Treasury is a great value. The Treasury has the original book's pictures too, but not as many of them.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great for travel, not for everyday reading
This is not the book to buy if you're looking to expose your children to a wide array of children's literature at its best. This is, however, an excellent book to purchase if you're going on an extended trip with a small child and won't be able to bring or acquire a big stack of books while away. Yes, the illustrations are too small. Yes, there are edits. But this book got me through three weeks abroad with two two-year-olds -- enough said. ... Read more

I was impressed how easy the title was to fine and it is a very nice book to read to children

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT book
My preschool class absolutely loves this book.Whenever I read it, I read it in the voice of the little old lady. The 2nd time I read the book, my students started to say some parts of the story, like "the head when nod nod".They want me to read this book every day to them.I defnitely recommend this book to everyone.

1-0 out of 5 stars THE TITLE SAYS IT ALL, "STUPID TALES"
THERE WAS NO DOUBT I WASN'T WARNED BEFORE PURCHASING THIS, WHAT I WAS GETTING.IT'S SARCASTIC, PARTS ARE FUNNY, BUT I COULDN'T BRING MYSELF TO WASTE ANY MORE OF MY TIME BY FINISHING THE BOOK. HOWEVER, HIS BOOK ABOUT THE WOLF & 3 PIGS WAS MUCH MORE CLEVER AND ENTERTAINING.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tails
A fantastic book not only for the young, but all ages. However, if you do not have the background knowledge in the many original fairy tales, you may fail to see the humour throughout the book. I love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Stinky Cheese... funny? YES!
The story is narrated by Jack from Jack and the Beanstalk. It is separated into a few short funny stories based on well known fairy tales.Jack talks to characters in the stories as well as the reader throughout the book in a very comical way that keeps the readers involved and entertained. All of the short stories are very funny and separate from each other; however, the characters sometimes travel from one story to another as a sort of underlying plot.

4-0 out of 5 stars PERFECT FOR TELLING AROUND THE CAMPFIRE!
SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK has classic campfire stories, such as ''The Hook'', and ''Me-Tie Daughty Walker'' along with lesser known tales like ''Alligators'' and ''May I Carry Your Basket''? Some stories are funny, such as ''The Viper'' (I've come to vipe your vindows) and ''The Ghost With Bloody Fingers'' (cool it dude, get a band-aid) while others are genuinely spooky, like ''The Guests'' and ''Cold as Clay''. The book was clearly intended for reading out loud, many stories even have tips for the reader, such as when to raise and lower your voice. Stephen Gammell's pictures are mysterious and darkly beautiful. I highly recommend this book for those looking for a spooky read aloud.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty darn creepy
First of all, at 14 years old, I have never been the most courageous of all, especially when it comes to ghost stories and psychological fear, the fear that lurks in your head; I have ALWAYS possessed that peculiar human craving to be scared out of my wits by a good ghost story, but like the human I am, have more often than not chickened out before getting to the "punchline" of the tale.
5-0 out of 5 stars A LOT better than R.C. Welch's "Scary Stories For Stormy Nights"!
A LOT better than R.C. Welch's "Scary Stories For Stormy Nights"! Unlike that book, these stories are original (and not sad).

4-0 out of 5 stars The scary, the funny, and the just plain weird
Take some excellent, renowmed writers, have them write a collection of stories for kids, and this is what you get.An eclectic, fun, sometimes creepy mix of tales that those of all ages are likely to enjoy.
5-0 out of 5 stars sweet
The general impression is that it's a collection of stories that the authors would have like to read when they were kids. Some of them may be scary to the announced age group (4-7) but most are just sweet. For the adult many of them will remind the reader how it was to be a kid. And for the kid, this will make them feel vindicated for many injustices they suffer, like the loud mean boy that everybody likes, over-controlling parents, and having to play sports when they really don't want to.
5-0 out of 5 stars Enertaining
The collection of stories is a must read for fans of intelligent young adult stories. Even the introduction, by Lemony Snicket, poking fun of books that are more mundane (with a terrific nod to Harry Potter) is a great read. I liked Gaiman's and Hornby's stories. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Living Lessons! Student from North Bay, NY
Every Living Thing, by Cynthia Rylant, is a wonderful read for any middle school student. This book is full of many short stories, each story taught me a great deal of respect and responsibility, which added to my maturity. This book includes 12 stories. The 1st story is called "Slower Than The Rest." In this story a boy wins an award for the first time ever! The 2nd story is called "Retired." Retired is about a retired 4th grade teacher who becomes very mean and cruel and does not like kids after a couple years of retirement. Well, that is until one of her friends end up having to move to France and they can not take their dog with them, so they give the dog to the teacher and then she becomes very kind, friendly, and loving to children again. "Papa's Parrot" is the 3rd story. This story is about a father and a son who become closer than ever when papa ends up in the hospital. This event brought father and son closer together. "Boar out There" is the 4th story. This story is about a young little girl named Jenny, who gets injured badly by a wild boar. But after getting injured the boar tour his nose really bad and he is still running free today. "A Pet" is the 5th story. This story is about a little girl named Emma. One day Emma asked her mom and dad if she can have a pet but they said no. Well one day Emma came home from school and she found a surprise in her room, it was a fish. Emma was so happy she jumped for joy and was happy her parents listened to her about giving her a pet. These are just a few of the tales in this wonderful collection of short stories.Cynthia Rylant is also the author of Henry and Mudge books.Be sure to pick up any book by this fine author.

4-0 out of 5 stars Touching stories about people and animals
"Every Living Thing," by Cynthia Rylant, is a collection of 12 short stories. Although different characters appear in each tale, the collection as a whole is unified by style and by theme. Each story deals with an encounter or ongoing relationship between a human being and one or more non-human animals. Since the book is only 81 pages long, each tale is quite brief.5-0 out of 5 stars For lovers of animals and people!!`
Wonderful stories!!Life as it is!! Having read these stories aloud to adults in nursing homes on numerous occassionandfound them to satisfy our need to hear good resolves, we can all recommend this good read. "A Bad Road for Cats", one of the favorites, that hits the hardrealities of human relationships and good resolves in our dealing withothers when things aren't right.Stories of people finding there waythrough realationships with others and the place that animals play in ourlives to make bridges.Read them! You will love them if you love peopleand animals.Write more of these Cynthia! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Indigo Products a great for teaching children how to relax and feel good about themselves
I have three "spirited" children. I have almost all of the Indigo products - books and CDs. My kids listen to them every night to fall asleep. We also use the CDs in the middle of the day to refocus during our "quiet and slow" time. One of our kids loves to be read. If we are having a particularly "spirited" day we will read her an indigo book.I also use the Adult CD for myself or with my kids as a family relaxation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Relaxing!
I bought all 3 of the Indigo Dreams CDs for children/teens.I have 2 daughters who deal with anxiety. My youngest's anxiety was so severe that she ended up in ER with a panic attack, which increased her anxiety even more - it was a horrible cycle. In searching for techniques to help her, I found this CD series. It has been a godsend. She quickly downloaded both of the "non teen" CDs to her iPod, allowing her to take the relaxation "on the road" and to choose her favorites from both CDs.She's been using these for almost a month and now her bedtime is so peaceful and easy - no longer does she stew and fret and end up being awake for hours. She is always asleep within minutes. My eldest daughter likes her teen CD as well, though she declared it was "stupid" before she listened to it.Now she has it on every night. These are great great products! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Baseball in april and other stories
The book Baseball in april and other stories is a book based on different stories in it. I think that it's a fun book to read for us teens because if you find the first story boring or you not interested in the story, you can go to the next story. I think books like that have different stories that relate to each other(I guess. There were only about three (3) stories that I didnt like or it was just boring to me.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great storytelling
I discovered Gary Soto's poetry in a public library in Nebraska. Then I read his short stories, my favorite being "Baseball in April." Like his poetry, these stories are beautiful in that they reveal a child's inner thought life; they also show the challenges that teenagers go through.
4-0 out of 5 stars good
The reason that I think this book is very good is because,of various reasons. One reason i think this book is very good is cause in the book the kids sound like they are having fun and its very realistic ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "Pay itforward"
There is a movement in the land that emphasizes "random acts of kindness". Much like the proverbial pebble thrown into still water, creating a series of ripples, any thoughtful gesture can have an effect on those around us. This is exactly what happens in One Smile, as a joyful little girl smiles at a discouraged young man sitting on a park bench. Little does the child know that her beatific smile will inspire the young man to start looking for a job.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous New Children's Book
Katie is a happy young girl who is skipping through the park one morning with her Mother, when she meets up with an unhappy young man. She gives him a bright smile, and soon the young man is smiling as well. As the day goes on, the young man fixes a woman's flat tire, and she smiles, then leaves an extra big tip for the waitress at a restaurant, and she smiles, and so on and so on. Proving that ONE SMILE can go a very long way.
5-0 out of 5 stars Educator Favorite
What can one smile do? Quite a lot as we find out in this noteworthy tale. The story begins with Katie walking with her mother through the park. She thoughtfully bestows a bright smile on a forlorn, out-of-work young man sitting on a park bench. It inspires the young man to begin looking for a new job. While doing so, he sees a woman whose car has a flat tire. He changes the tire for her. She, in turn, leaves a large tip for a waitress. This continues on until, eventually, the good feelings inspired by Katie's smile comes back to her and her mother. Read more

I thought this book was great - it was really colorful. The overall feel reminded me of the book "Now I Know the Ten Commandments". I recommend it to anyone.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Tale of Three Trees: A Traditional Folktale
I am a Catholic School teacher and have read this to my class at different times of the year.I find it a fantastic tale and the children are always amazed by the end of the story.I have purchased it for our Pastor when he was transfered to another parish and he said it brought tears to his eyes. It's a great tale of how you don't have to be embedded with jewles, pointing to the sky or a grand ship taking fanastic voyages to be a good person. God loves us just the way we are weather it be in a mink coat or rags.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome read
I am reading this with my 7 yr old and 4 yr old and we love the stories. It is warm fuzzy reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Did I Wait So Long?
I'd watched the television series over the years and thought I'd like to read the books, although I was kind of embarassed to tell anyone because they were considered to be written for children or adolescents.
5-0 out of 5 stars an avid re-reader of the series
I've read these books since I was a little girl up to the present (46 y/o), and continue to do so.They are my very favorite books, I just ordered another set having read them so much over the years that my second set finally started falling apart.Anytime I get depressed with the world around me, with the behavior of people, (no one seems to have manners anymore, the willingness to work hard for and take care of their families, etc.), I read these books.I also learned a lot about pioneering days, how people cooked, built houses, made clothes, cleaned, washed, etc, etc, etc.Children who were able to go to school ( and some who couldn't) were expected to learn and in most cases did, and from the results of a sample questionaire that was on the internet some time ago knew a lot more than the average kid today.I can't begin to explain the benefits of reading these books to anyone no matter what age.I adore Laura, and plan to hopefully go the the Laura Ingalls Wilder house and museum in Mansfield, Mo. soon, as well as DeSmet, SD.I want to see the things she always talked of, such as Pa's fiddle. These books should be required reading in schools.I never much liked the series on TV however, they made up a lot of situations that were not believeable, and in general just didn't follow the books much.On the other hand, I'm glad someone did decide to do the series, it keeps Laura and her family alive in a lot of people's minds that haven't read the books. But, I can't say it enough, the books are much much better, READ THEM!!!!!!!!! ... Read more

Editorial Review

When Christopher Robin asks Pooh what he likes doing best in the world, Pooh says, after much thought, "What I like best in the whole world is Me and Piglet going to see You, and You saying 'What about a little something?' and Me saying, 'Well, I shouldn't mind a little something, should you, Piglet,' and it being a hummy sort of day outside, and birds singing."Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Winning Book
The tales are lovable, enjoyable and moving, and perhaps the most important thing is that although written for kids, we adults can reflect on the way we live our daily lives. We live through the pages the feelings of all characters fear, amazement, joy, kindness, self-inflicted misery, competitiveness, good times, and most of all, positiveness and passion to enjoy and nature true friendship. We have these feelings and emotions as human beings. There are Rabbits, and Tiggers and Owls and Piglets all around us and we can barely seem to recognize them in our friends or the people we communicate with every day. Illustrations are gorgeous,an outstanding vision of life.

Who doesn't love Winnie The Pooh? Don't answer that. This is an excellent and charming book to use for bedtime stories for children. I grew up with it and I still love it! It endears the simplicity of life and love...and honey.

5-0 out of 5 stars If your child loves trains, they'll love this.
My son's a big fan of the Thomas the Tank Engine shows/books.When he saw this story in a compilation of classic childrens liturature I was reading to him he wanted me to read it to him over and over.I bought this book because it also has the spanish words in the book so he can also read the words in spanish. The art-work is bold and eye catching.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Sons' Favorite Book
My one year olds love this book more than any other right now. The illustrations are very bright and colorful, and the book is fun to read aloud, especially if you add some of your own freight train sounds!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great stories, poor drawings
This book seems to be aimed at younger readings; at least, I think this due to the childish nature of the artwork. It is the kind of drawing often cluttering up bad books for kids. That's too bad, as it may give readers the idea that these stories are juvenile when they are not.I would note, too, that the artist seems not to have read the stories very well, as characters often look far too young or too old.
5-0 out of 5 stars What a great read!
This is a great book for someone who has read the original series and wants some extra background... I've also used it to get friends interested in the original series.Check it out!

3-0 out of 5 stars First Meeting of Jane
For me, the only truly memorable story from the entire collection is the last one where Ender meets Jane, the AI introduced in Speaker for the Dead.(And I know Jane is more than just an AI but it's too hard to explain unless you've read the books.)

4-0 out of 5 stars It's so rare to find something new in the world of children's books, but this book is a bit different.
This book has a great gimmick. It's a book designed to be ready by two people, complete with a chorus to be read by all.The layout, text for one reader to one side, text for the other reader to the other side, and font color act as natural prompts for each reader to read his part. It's a good alternative for the child who doesn't like sappy poetry, since it will still develop his ear to the beauty of verse. My seven year old loved it for one read, and then said I could return it to the library, but I was very happy to have it.It helped broaden his horizones and get him used to some different rhyming words and ways of phrasing.Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars You Read to meI'll Read to You
My husband and I have read this to our grandchildren and read together. The kids thought it was great to see us reading together!Great book for fluency in the classroom also.

4-0 out of 5 stars great format for reading together
This book was great for interactions with reading between two people. One of the stories with mice, dogs and cats was not a good example of how to resolve conflict - threat was countered with threat - but the format for reading together and the rhyming were excellent and the rest of the stories modeled good values."I hate my hat" is my son's favorite. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Super Cute!!
David goes to school was such a great book. Not much text but the pictures are wonderful. I bought this book last night for my almost 4 year old who just started preschool. I wanted him to understand that raising your hand to speak and keeping you hands to yourself is very important. On the way to school this morning he mentioned he would NOT be acting like David!! We Highly recommend this book!
5-0 out of 5 stars David Goes to School
I bought this book for my four year old grandson who will start preschool this year. It's a wonderful book for introducing our toddlers to school.Ben loves this whole series and all of David's antics. Each book in the series is teaching a lesson to our young ones.Your child/grandchild will enjoy it as much as my Ben.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Awful peice of trash
If there was a rating of O I would have chosen that. This book is just plain awful. Anyone putting this in the hands of a child will certainly have no right to complain when thier kid starts acting like this creepy David. If you laugh at this book, and think what this brat is doing is cute, then you can expect your child to start exhibiting the behavior also, and won't he be suprised when you reprimand him for behaving just like this kid, but when reading it you laughed and thought it was oh so cute. Confusing for your kid dont you think?

Editorial Review

Incredible encounters seem to be the norm at this school, and the unbelievable experiences all seem to prove a point. Whether it's the hirsute beasty that moves into the desk of the messy girl or a genie from the chalkboard that grants a wish to the class know-it-all, the creatures of Douglas Evans's amusing stories all communicate subtle lessons to kids. Humorous stories of familiar students and unbelievable classroom inhabitants make this book an attractive alternative to stories of the supernatural that entertain without any substance. Read more

Douglas Evans should write more books for children. The Classroom at the End of the Hall is a page-turner.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Classroom at the End of the Hall
The author of this book is Douglas Evans and he makes you feel as if you were in the book. He makes sound effects and thoughts. Evans builds suspense by making you want to read further and further. Once you start reading a chapter you wouldn't want to stop until the next chapter starts.
