So many good memories.
My grandmother bought this book for me when I was six years old, and I spent countless hours laughing at the poetry and looking at the illustrations. A wonderful book, definitely; very humorous, a great gift for any child. :) I cannot pick my favorite poem from this book, they are all so hilarious; the time spent reading these stories with my mother, grandparents, or friends when I was a child, is priceless.

Another blast from the past for me...
I absolutely adore these drawings and poems - I have been reading and giggling and remembering my own childhood when I giggled and laughed at them... My kids both laughed and laughed when I read them to them - and my 18 year old daughter had to show them all to her friends. This is a just an adorable book and well worth the money for the kid at heart or by age!

NOT JUST FOR KIDS!
If you want to be transported to a magical place for an hour or so, buy this book!I saw it and bought it just in case I ever have a granddaughter.I wasn't expecting it to be a hit with the adult women I know.But after feeling like I'd been transported back to being a little girl and swept into Fairyland (and I didn't believe in fairies!), I passed it around to my friends.It was just about impossible to get the book back!Everybody asked if they could share it with just one or two more friends.And this is before the book was ever shared with a child!Eventually I ordered 6 more copies from Amazon.The book is so creative and beautifully done.Just thinking about it continues to give me pleasure.

By far, the worst in the series.
This installment is easily the weakest in the series. The writing is all over the place, and there is no central plot to drive the story. That being said, the book is still good. I've just come to expect more from this series.

It was great!
Harry Potter and The Order of the Pheonex was one of the best books i have ever read even though I am a huge Harry Potter fan. The book starts out by describing how the muggle prime minister and the minister of magic have to be connected. Harry is at home in the next chapter and Dumbledore comes to see him at the Durlseys and tells Harry how they would be having lessons the whole year, teaching Harry more about Voldemort's past and Harry learning how to kill Voldemort. The rest of the book plays up on the adventure that Dumbledore and Harry take together trying to kill part of Voldemorts soul, a Horcrux. When Harry and Dumbledore come home Dumbledore learns of how Draco Malfoy has been following Voldemort all year and Snape is also on the dark lord's side, seeing how he kills Dumbledore.

I loved this book because it kept you guessing and it was exciting.It was even better than all the others in my opinion.Harry was furious because he coudn't find out what Lord Voldemort was doing.This book is about stopping Voldemort and his horrible plans.The head of the ministry of magic has hired Professor Umbridge as the new defense against the Dark Arts teacher and the High Inquisitor of the school.Harry tries to help out other people by teaching defensive spells.I definitely recommend this book to people of all ages! ... it grew on me
When we first bought this book for my then two-year old daughter, I could barely get through it the first time.I didn't much like it.That's probably because I was so busy trying to say the words it, I couldn't pay attention to what was actually happening.Since then, the book has grown on me, and my now three-year old daughter loves it, as well.After reading the book aloud a gazillion times, I can now say it almost without getting my tongue twisted, and my favorite part is the ending, where Knox finally gets his "revenge" for what Fox has put him through.

Although this book was around when many of today's parents wereyoungsters, it has remained a steadfast must-have in every toddler's library. For starters, it's a great vocabulary guide that names the many things that go (and some that haven't a prayer of going, but are great fun to imagine anyway). It's also teeming with detail-rich scenes and characters on every page, teaching children the rewards of looking long and closely (such as finding the hidden "Goldbug" in each spread). Along the way it entertains with the silly and slapstick--everything from toothpaste and toothbrush cars to six fire department vehicles that show up to extinguish a ladybug-size fire in a miniature pink convertible. What's most amazing about this book, however, is its longevity. When you purchase it for your fledgling talker, you should consider it an investment. Even 11-, 12-, and 13-year-olds are known to pore over the book nostalgically, cooing at Lowly Worm and eagerly tracking Officer Flossie's book-long chase after that irresponsible, speedster driver in a cowboy hat. A Scarry Classic
I first read this book to my daughter 22 years ago. It was her favorite, and alas it wore out. Searching to find Goldbug on each and every page was the most fun, and the verse was very entertaining as we did so. It helped teach her words, spelling and all about the different ways to get from here to there. I just reordered a copy to surprise her for Christmas, as she prepares to start her own family. I highly recommend this book by one of the most beloved children's authors.

Simply outstanding
I grew up with Richard Scarry books, including the now out-of-print "Busy Busy World."For some reason I had forgotten what a gem this is.Any child will delight in it, and for parents it is so nice to have a book that can be different every time you read it, as most of our books are read over, and over, and over.

Dr. Seuss is great...
The other review complaining about how it is shortened is just silly. Yes, the original is longer and my toddler finds it more entertaining- but when we first got this board book, ds wanted to read it several times a day. He still likes it read to him. It is perfect to start babies off on Dr. Seuss.

Yes, this is an abridged version. But it's not mutilated. The abridgement was done very sensitively, and if you didn't know better, you'd think it was just as Dr Seuss wrote it. It really captures his joyful "voice" and his distinctive lilting rhymes.

My [...] could not put it down!
Both "The Sea of Monsters" as well as the first book in the series, "The Lightning Thief" were fantastic books that my eleven-year old son could not put down.He tends to be very critical about books but this series is a new favorite.He is recommending these books to friends and is looking forward to Riordan's next edition. "The Sea of Monsters" has also peaked his interest in mythology. I recommend you try this series if you want to inspire your child's interest in reading.

What an understatement!!!I started to read this book and couldn't put it down.It left me wanting more and voila... To say that this particular apple tree is a "giving tree" is an understatement. In Shel Silverstein's popular tale of few words and simple line drawings, a tree starts out as a leafy playground, shade provider, and apple bearer for a rambunctious little boy. Making the boy happy makes the tree happy, but with time it becomes more challenging for the generous tree to meet his needs. When he asks for money, she suggests that he sell her apples. When he asks for a house, she offers her branches for lumber. When the boy is old, too old and sad to play in the tree, he asks the tree for a boat. She suggests that he cut her down to a stump so he can craft a boat out of her trunk. He unthinkingly does it. At this point in the story, the double-page spread shows a pathetic solitary stump, poignantly cut down to the heart the boy once carved into the tree as a child that said "M.E. + T." "And then the tree was happy... but not really." When there's nothing left of her, the boy returns again as an old man, needing a quiet place to sit and rest. The stump offers up her services, and he sits on it. "And the tree was happy." While the message of this book is unclear (Take and take and take?Give and give and give? Complete self-sacrifice is good? Complete self-sacrifice is infinitely sad?), Silverstein has perhaps deliberately left the book open to interpretation. (All ages) Read more

The Real World!
I have loved this book since I was a child and now as I am getting older and my friends and family are having children, I give this book as a present to the new generation being born.Although, for some reason there are reviews that think this book is "horrifying", I think it is a wonderful story about the reality of the world.Sometimes in life you have to give something of yourself even though you know it won't be appreciated.If the only reason why you give is for people to be thankful this would be a very sad world and for some reason my generation is raising children that aren't held accountable and over protected from the reality of the world.Thus, leaving them unprepared to survive in life.This book made an impact on me as a child and I hope it makes an impact on many others in the future.

Love this book since i was a kid
This book for some reason draws real emotion from the reader.Almost like the song Cat's in the Cradle by Harry Chapin.It's about a boy and a tree, and the unconditional love that the tree has for the boy (like parents have for their kids).

All the Harry Potter books are magical, and these just complete the enchantment. They are a must have for any fan of the Harry Potter series. Young or old, anyone will enjoy them.

Great Fun
Enjoyable quick reads that supplement Harry Potter's world and give a nice fix while waiting for the next novel to come out. The proceeds from the sale of these books also goes to charity. I've always wanted to know more about the history, geography and culture of the magical, non-muggle world than the Harry Potter novels tell us and books like these fill us in very nicely!

I enjoyed reading these 2 little books! They were very interesting! In 'Quiditch Through the Ages' it had a wonderful history of the magical sport! It made you feel like it had really happened, and that's what great books are supposed to do! The 'Magical Beasts and Where to Find Them' was inspiring, it put your imagination to work!

Giving geeks a good name.
Encyclopedia Brown was my childhood hero. I liked him so much I named my cat Sally Kimball. Not one to stand out in a crowd, Cyc (on the covers of the old scholastic paperbooks) looked like a carbon copy of my 2nd grade self. Of course, I was sitting inside reading about his adventures during recess, not solving crimes, with wits perhaps not quite so sharp. And my suburb did not have quite as many opportunities for me to distinguish myself with crime-solving ability. Still, Cyc taught me lessons that I saw myself one day applying, once I escaped Red China.
Are You a good detective?
This story is about a boy who starts a detective business and his name is Leroy Brown, but all his friends call him Encyclopedia.His father is the cheif of police and no one in the city of Idaville(where he lives)had gotten away with any crime in over one year!Whenever his father gets a hard case, he tells it to Leroy and it's solved very fast, but it's their little secret.The answers to all the cases are in the back of the book, but sometimes it's fun to solve them yourself.Some cases are easier than others and some are harder than others but they all make this a good book!

Still a favorite after 20 years...
I read all the books I could find in this series as a young girl.To this day, I still remember some of the answers and clues (a door swings out towards its hinges).I am so glad to have found these books and hope to share them with my son and nephews when the time is right.I'll probably read them all over again...that is how much I enjoyed them growing up.

Shan has done it again!
I love this series to death!I was super excited when the last book finally came out.I read it in less than a day.I couldn't put it down.I was shocked at the end.I was literally almost in tears.I'm sad Mr. Crepsley wasn't in the last three books.He was my favorite character and I'd love this book even more if he was in it!I have to say, I'm sad that it's over.I've read this series at least three times.I love vampire books, and this series was by far the best.It gets boring with your typical "blood-sucking, night walkers" vampire stories, but Darren Shan put a total twist on it and that made it new and refreshing.That's what I loved most.And the fact that he uses his own name saying it really happened makes it a little better.Overall, it was an excellent book!!!

You MUST read this book!!!
I love this book! I just finished it today and I started it 3 days ago. Usually I can read these books in less than a day but with school and everything its hard to squeeze an entire book in one day. I agree with everyone the ending is a little corny. But without a doubt I would tell anyone to read this book. Although it looks like a book that guys would like, I am a girl and fell in love with these books I have the entire series and I am starting to read Darren Shan's new series; The Demonata. I am waiting for the 3rd book to come out and it feels like it is taking forever! But anyway, this book has many surprises and unexpected events. I don't want to blow the big question who is the Lord of Shadows? Darren or Steve? But I will say that Vancha apparently did not die because over the 2 years after the Lord is revealed Evanna get pregnant with Vancha and his brother. I must say this book will keep you wanting more! I actually cried when I finished the book because I loved the whole series and for it to end they way it did makes me dissappointed. But I have been on Darren's site and he said after the 10 book series of The Demonata (which I must say is a great series for anyone who loved Cirque Du Freak)he MIGHT write a 2nd season to the Cirque Du Freak books but nothing is a deffinate. All I can really say is READ THIS BOOK!!! you will love it!

i agree good book sad ending
this is a very good book.but the ending was sad. I was expecting more of an after shock like ??? um i forgot who said that.well this is awsome and very sad I mean im a boy and i got sad.and your right i cant believe its over, it stinks. I mean it was a crudy ending and he is cheating the veiwers. And the worse part of all darren never got to say bye to Vancha daries or especialy Annie. Also what ever happend to Vancha after Gannen stabbed him. The real Darren if you read this please tell me.Now dont get me wrong its by the far best series ive ever read and i own the whole series. Just it leaves the veiwers a gap in the story.I think there should be 1 more book. I cant stand it, the books is like my bible well not really but there so good its really hard to believe that its all over,all the waiting you ,we had to do to get the series it just is not that fair and im pretty shure people agree with me. One of the best pieces in children's lit.
The four Darling children are taken to the fantastical world Never Land by the mischievious Peter Pan,who first appeared in their window a short time before. PETER PAN is considered by many a fairy tale, and as in all the finest fairy tales,there is an underlying darkness left out of the Disney versions. There is also a bittersweet depth beneath the whimsy of the story,which Disney seems to have forgotten to add. If you have exposed a child to the cheesy Disney musical,show them the real magic of the story by reading them the book. Trust me. You won't regret it. This a book the whole family can enjoy. yes, I used the word haunting to describe this book, thats because, well, it is. The book has many metaphores for death, youth, and evil. Death is metaphored in many places, such as Mrs. Darlings fear for her children, and also in the crocodile, with his ticking down until the day we all die.

Perfect for any age
My daughter is just 2 years old and she's been making me read it to her for about 6 months now. Obviously it'll help her read in the future, but I want her to have fun with books. And this is the perfect book to start off with, even if she can't read yet.

I worked with a little girl (ELL) who already had her basic reading skills; phonemic awarness, letter recognition and knowing what to do with words (in print).She just couldn't seem to read (even in her first language) with the level of fluency required for a student to pass from K- to First grade.This book captured her attention and we worked on the book in sections, first we read the section, then she had it as "homework".Each week when I returned to her home to work with her she would read both her "homework" and the preceeding section(s) in the book until at last she could read the entire book.This is the first hard back book, that she has ever read completely by herself so I have purchased this as a gift to her. ... Advice of sibling true - they get better and better
My little brother passed away at just 17 years old on July 25th, and I remember when I first started reading year 4, he said that each book only get's better and I have a long way to go. Yes, it took me nearly three months to read this novel, but not because I'm that slow of a reader. More likely, the story and characters were so interesting that I preferred dragging out each chapter to save myself from moving forward to year 5.
My Favorite Book- one you could read again and again
I LOVED THIS BOOK! It really IS a book you could read again and again. If I was stranded on an island for weeks and could only bring ONE book, I would DEFINETLY bring this book, without a doubt. It was thrilling, sad, funny, and beautifully written all at the same time. I admit, I cried. I did. Some people would think why cry but it was so touching, so beautiful, I loved it. It really is the BEST book I've ever read. I can't say anything bad about it.

A very short book
Due to the shortness of this book, my daughter prevailed upon me to read it more often. It's very cute though.

Great for little ones!!!
My 8 months old son loves this book and mostly at nightime. He'd rather this one than the other ones. Everytime when I start the song, he gets fascinating. The illustrations are great and catch my son's attention .......He Loves it!!!!!

Great book for nightime reading!
My 11 month son loves this book! I read it to him almost every day before puttign him to bed. As I read the book, we imitate the gestures from the illustrations which he loves. Heed the Warning!
The Lorax is another book by Seuss with a powerful message within its pages. Its message is more overt and obvious to the reader than other Seuss books. Simply stated, we must take care of the natural resources around us or they could be forever lost. The main character in the story is filled with greed at the prospect making and selling more Thneeds. He continually ignores the Lorax's warnings. For a while, he and his family are very successful and prosperous, but in time the prophetic warnings come to pass. The trees are all gone, the air is black with smog, and the water is thick with sludge. For me, the Lorax represents those in our society who put themselves on the front lines to protect our environment. Many ridicule them and call them "Tree Huggers!" But, we should think twice before we dismiss their warnings. We have already seen many of the parallels between this book and reality occur.

How much do I love this book?!

From one to five stars,this book is the best! I loved the adorable mice in "Whose Mouse Are You?" And I was amazed when I found out that a dog could disguise itself just by getting very dirty in "Harry the Dirty Dog." I'd love to give it thirty-zillion stars,for I'm giggling when I see Ferdinand sitting on a bumble bee!I am going to be reading lots more giant books, for this one is great!

Great Book - so much variety and interesting stories!
My son and I love reading the 20th Century Children's Book Treasury.We have read from it every night for the last two months straight, and are still going!It is so much fun to discover new, unique stories. We would have never found many of these stories/books on our own. Some books come from different cultures. I have only heard of 6 or 7 out of 40 plus books included.With 40 plus stories, the Treasury is a great value. The Treasury has the original book's pictures too, but not as many of them.
