2-0 out of 5 stars Not the Best in the Series
I can't say I actually cared for this story. It's a typical misunderstood, poor-pitiful me story of Rani who feels very un-fairy like since she had to cut off her wings to save Mother Dove's egg.I actually read this one after Girl, if I had read it first, I may not have let her read it.Rani feels she doesn't fit in and runs away...how typical, instead of finding a friend or elder to talk to or a new place in the fairy hierarchy, he just runs away into the night.Yes, this is the message I want my 8 year old daughter, preparing for her tween and adolescent years to read...you don't feel like anyone understand you...you don't fit in...why don't you run away then and have an adventure. You'll show them, and when you finally realize that you miss home and want to come back...of course they'll all throw a party for you because they missed you so and running away was the best thing to do at the time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional
I think this book is perfect for any age group. It can be read alone or to smaller children.Anyone with a sense of imagination and a heart will enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rani in the Mermaid Lagoon
I think this book is great! If you love fairies, THEN THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU! The other books in this series are great too. Rani has cut off her wings to save Neverland. She doesn't feel like she belongs to the fairies after she ruins a dance. So she runs away and goes live with the mermaids in the Mermaid Lagoon. But then she realizes how much she misses the Pixie Hollow and would rather face mean Vidia than the mermaaid Oola and her snobby friends (in my opinon). She also misses the feeling of the wind blowing against her hair when she's flying on the back of Brother Dove (who is her wings) instead of riding on the back of her seahorse friend. What does she chose to do, go back the Pixie Hollow or stay with the seahorse's family underwater? Find out when you read the book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless
My grandfather used to tell me the story of the little mermaid when I was a child. It was the rather unadorned version, lacking the peaches-and-cream ending concocted by well meaning Disney producers. It was the original story, Anderson's story. My grandmother bought me this book when I was 11. Santore's beautiful illustrations were true to the tale and did due justice to a childhood classic. I highly recommend this to fans of the classic story, or if you would like to experience it for the first time there is no better way. I'm now 20 and I find myself, every now and then, curling up in bed with this book and reading myself a betime story.

5-0 out of 5 stars captivating
The Little Mermaid is a timeless story to be revisited, cherished, and loved for one's entire life - beyond - for generations. In this remarkable book Charles Santore's breathtaking illustrations bring out the very essence of Hans Christian Anderson's classic fairy tale.He takes his audience directly to this imaginary kingdom where only infinitely beautiful souls exist - the Little Mermaid, whose love was too pure for this world, the prince, whose love for the Little Mermaid was just the wrong kind of love, even the sea-witch, who gives the Little Mermaid the only opportunity to find her prince.Santore has you fall in love with all of Anderson's characters, breaking your heart ever so delightfully.

5-0 out of 5 stars An enchanted classical "pictorial" novel.
I read the story when I was 9, it was for school and I hated it.I always thought it is a girly book. Now I read it again with the fantastic illustration of Charles Santore, I know why Disney adopt it into a movie.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An fun-filled story, excellent for young girls
We first met 12-year-old Emily in THE TAIL OF EMILY WINDSNAP and learned her secret: she's half-mermaid, half-human. Emily, however, never knew this secret herself until she took swimming lessons. Not only does she discover her fishy genes, she also learns that her father, a merman, didn't abandon her as a baby after all. Instead, he was imprisoned by the angry ruler of the oceans, Neptune, who found out about the illegal love affair between her human mother and merman father. At the end of the book, the family is reunited and sent to live in a secret place where humans and merfolk can live together in harmony.

you will like this book Deep trouble because it begins like this a boy is looking for a griant sting ray and he gosto the middled and gets suck underwater then he went back to surface and gasp for air then he races he sister he took a short cut he stops he had steped on fire coral it burned his foot and he found a mermaid they count it the mermaid i can't tell you the ending....

5-0 out of 5 stars All About A Good Book
This is all about the book Deep Trouble. It is about these peoplethinking that they caught a mermaid and then these zoopeople came and said that they would give the other people one million dollars, but the oter people did not give them the mermaid, and thats how the book went, this was one of the best books I have ever read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Misleading, but Good
I'm a very tuff critic, and as much as I like R.L. Stine, this isn't his best. The story, in my opinion, is misleading. It's supposed to be the "Don't Go In The Water" scenario, but it's mainly about mermaids, something that isn't very scary. Early in the book is the best scene. A hammerhead circles the main character. If only the whole book would have dealt on this topic. But, I do believe that it is worth buying and reading. Hope you enjoy! ... Read more

What a great addition to our bookshelf! My 3 year old daughter loves the Little Mermaid video, but I try to limit her viewing time. This book is a top choice to fill in on those days we skip the videos.5-0 out of 5 stars true under the sea story
My kids love this story and so do I.It tells every important detail in a short description. Each page has beautiful pictures with only a few paragraphs so the kids get to turn the pages often. The language comes straight from the movie so that the story teller can use the character voices. This will become a favorite with your family too. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter's favorite series
My 6 (almost 7) year old adores the Fairy Realm books. And I have to say, after having waded through some pretty awful, perfunctorily churned out "series books" with her in the past, I've been pleasantly surprised by the quality of these books. Compared with so much of what's out there, Emily Rodda's writing is a cut above. The stories in this series are gentle and familiar fantasy material -- but it's engagingly told, and suspenseful without being *too* scary for younger readers.
3-0 out of 5 stars Like syrup on a Twinkie
OK, I'm a guy with 3 young daughters and so, but for Potter, story time is it's own kind of hell.Too sweet, too predictable. This makes Disney world look like Mordor. Give the character attention deficit and a queen who gives long boring lectures filled nevertheless with lifesaving facts, missed.Oh well, beats the heck out of Pony Pals at least - I was going nuts: "pony pony pony pony ...".
5-0 out of 5 stars The Enchantment Continues . . .
With every story Jessie adds to her charm bracelet a special gift from those whom she helps in the Fairy Realm and my five year old daughter and I can hardly wait to read what happens next! Emily Rodda's series of Fairy Realm books are a perfect gift to share. From the first book you become hooked on the charming characters from Granny Jessica the true Queen of the Failry Realm to the mischeivous elf Gif and Maybelle the talking miniature horse. What a delight of adventure as each tale unravels and Jessie finds that she is stronger than she thinks and so very much like Granny whom she loves and admires.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding quality with beautiful illustrations
I have a few touchy feely books for my 10 month old, and this is one of the best. It's made of really thick cardboard pages and is almost indestructible. The illustrations are wonderfully colorful and interesting. Each page has multiple touch and feel spots, though some of the textures are similar (how many different types of scales can you find for mermaid tails) but they are all different colors and my son still enjoys touching them. The story is a little more involved than most touch and feel books, so I think he will enjoy this book for a long time. This is really a beautiful book and worth the cost.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even Mermaids Die of a Broken Heart
This is the true story of The Little Mermaid. Unlike the Disney version where she gets the prince, the mermaid dies of a broken heart when the Prince whose life she saved marries another. The tragedy of the ending is what made the original version so touching. A beautiful mermaid gives up her voice, her family, her life in the sea in order to be with the one she loves. The promise is the love and the soul of sacrifice. It was a love dependant on another, being the Prince, and the risks she took were considerable. When the Prince falls for the woman he thought rescued him at sea it is the end of the Little Mermaid's quest for eternity. But since she doesn't kill him and his new bride she gets what she wanted all along ... a soul ... and no longer needs the Prince to live as a spiritual being in eternity. Not only is the little mermaid free from the curse of the Sea Witch but she earns her soul on her own volition. The Prince was merely a conduit to her wish. It is more poignant this way since the little mermaid no longer needs to earn love from anyone except herself.
5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful story and loved the artwork
Growing up, Disney's version of this story was probably my favorite movie.Id really never known that there was a book until I came across it in the library(which is silly, because this is something of a classic.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Alice Hoffman's Aquamarine, a Review from Victoria
Anyone can read this book!!! I think it is a great book about 2 girls who are about to be separated, a mermaid in love and a big storm. It was one of the best stories I have read and I would rate it 6 stars if I could!!!!!!!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Aquamarine--by Sophie K
I think I would have liked this book better if I hadn't seen the movie first. I felt Ms. Hoffman spent so much time describing the little details of everything, that she never really got around to telling the story. The movie had a whole lot more to it. I can tell that Alice Hoffman is a very good writer, and I am sure some of her adult books are better. I read this book in two days--I wish it was longer. Sorry Ms. Hoffman, Aquamarine didn't make it on to my high score list this time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Aquamarine
I liked the book Aquamarine. I couldn't put it down once I started. Claire and Hailey are about to spend the last summer at the Capri Beach together. Hailey, who's drawn to water, finds a mermaid, Aquamarine, at the bottom of the Capri pool. In exchange for a night with Raymond, the snack-shop owner that Aquamarine is in love with, Aquamarine is suppose to go back to the ocean. She agrees. What happens? I'll let you find out! My daugher is [...] and we came upon this book at a yard sale. She read it right away- we couldn't tear her away from it. This is definately the best book about a mermaid for her age group (8-10?). (She is a pretty good reader, so some people may want to wait a bit since it is recommended for 9 year olds).

5-0 out of 5 stars A lovely and poignant story about choices
The sea calls to Sapphy, a call that seems to say that the sea is in her blood and the sea is where she belongs. It calls to her brother Conor, too, and it may have called her father. Is that why her father disappeared a year ago? Sapphy has lived near the sea all her life, but when she meets one of the Mer, a boy named Faro, her life is changed. She begins to understand the voice of the sea, and the pull is so strong that she finds it difficult to resist. It pulls her away from her home and family. But when the sea and the earth come into conflict, Sapphy and Conor must make a choice about where they belong and where their loyalties lie.
4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story cut short by an abrupt end.
Too often I am forced to justify to others why I am prone to snooping around the kids section of bookstores. Simply put, I believe that the kids section is where the best stories are at. Too often adults under-estimate the intelligence of children and few believe that kids books can be far more imaginative and involving than 'grown-up' books.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ingo will pull you into its depths
A wonderful book.

4-0 out of 5 stars my treasure
I bought this book as a child from a scholastic book order and I absolutely loved it. I got so mad at my sister when I let her borrow it and she spilled water on it. I love how all the different cultural illustrations were drawn by the same artist. I'm in college now, and it's just a fun and simple read. I don't own any other mermaid books yet but I really love this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mermaids in a different light.....
This wonderful book written by Mary Pope Osbourne puts memaids into a different light. Most of us (I think) view mermaids as fantastically beautiful kind and caring creatures. Although most of the mermaids in this book are depicted as being beautiful they can be very scarey as well.My daughter who will soon be eight described this book as, "Neat, but a little scarey."It was very interesting to read the stories from different countries. These mermaids are very different than the one portrayed in the Disney film.It is refreshing to read about mermaids in a cultural interpretation. 5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible book for all mermaid lovers
i'm 15 years old and have always loved mermaids. My favorite movie is Disney's The Little Mermaid, and i am always interested in any books i come across about them. i came across this book in 6th grade. it was my teacher's book, but i stole it for the entire year! i read it over and over again, i was mesmerized by the stories and pictures. most of the stories i havnt even heard before. i was so sad when i had to give it back, but just now, 3 years later, i found it on this website! i ordered it right away and couldn't be happier. i reccomend this book to anyone that has a facsination with mermaids. this book is truly wonderful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Really Good Book
I read this book for my summer reading program at school. The book was very well written, and funny. One of my favorite parts was when this man gives a memory wipe on Emily Windsnap's class by giving them sugar coated doughnuts. I thought this was very clever. I can't wait to read Liz Kessler's sequel, Emily Windsnap and The Monster of The Deep.

5-0 out of 5 stars i loved it!

3-0 out of 5 stars A kind of "Hotel New Hampshire" for the kiddie set.And with mermaids.
I was riding the subway this morning reading Heather Dyer's, "The Fish In Room 11".I often read children's books while riding public transportation as it usually makes for some interesting conversations.Today was no exception.I was halfway through when a European woman asked to see what I was reading.I showed her the title and the author and she exclaimed that though she had never heard of this book or knew what it was about (though she probably gathered a lot from the pen and ink illustrations that were on almost every page) she thought this book would be perfect for her dyslexic daughter. After all, the story looked interesting and the words are quite big (fontwise) and simple on the page. And that, quite frankly, sums up my opinion of this book to a tee. It's a very simple story with a very simple plot and not much in the way of surprises or, for that matter, originality.Still, this is an excellent tale for that precocious reader who feels that they are ready to handle full-blown chapter books, but can't handle stuff by Nancy Farmer, Diana Wynne Jones, or even J.K. Rowling yet.Dyer may fill a niche, but it's certainly a tiny one.
5-0 out of 5 stars A truly endearing and whimsical story
Toby has always lived at the hotel by the sea, where he's grown up as an abandoned child. His meeting with Eliza Flot and her mermaid family complicates his life, however: soon Toby finds his secret more than he can handle on his own, and changes begin. The Fish In Room 11 is a truly endearing and whimsical story of a most unusual friendship. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Nice
This book is primarily for children.I am not a child but have always been interested in mermaids.I found this book to be cute and interesting. It covers mermaids in different cultures from around the world and mermaid culture itself. There are sections on family life, children, community, language, art, fashion, holidays, and magic. There are beautiful color illustrations on every page. This is a book I know I would have loved as a child.
5-0 out of 5 stars From Mary Quattlebaum for Washington Parent
A trip to the shore calls for The Book of Mermaids. Author/illustrator Patricia Saxton draws from many cultures and her own imagination to create a fanciful picture book on merfolk arts, language and family life. These sea creatures (half fish, half human) were revered in ancient times as powerful gods and continue to surface in popular culture....Youngsters will have a great time learning about mermaids' mystical tools (pearls and blue stones), weaving their own mermaid tales and poring over Saxton's shimmering mixed-media illustrations, which further heighten the magical quality of these legendary beings.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have ...
For any girl who knows in her heart that mermaids simply and surely must exist, The Book of Mermaids is a must have. Not only does it confirm everything she always knew to be true, it gives a fantastic view, rippling with romance and realism, into the underwater world that seems only a tail-flick away. From merlore and history to details about merfamilies, merfashions and merfestivals, this book is a celebration of fantasy worthy of a reading during Jewel Time festivities. Beautiful, murky water-colored illustrations give a glimpse into a world we all wish to be real. ... Read more
