5-0 out of 5 stars A young lad on a fearless journey in search of his mother
Maurice Sendak's "Mommy?" is an interesting pop-up book which deals with a young lad dressed in blue and red attire who encounters some strange creatures in search of his mother. Among the creatures that this lad encounters as he enters a haunted house, we have a wolf-man, a Frankenstein's monster, a Bride of Frankenstein, a mummy, and a goblin. Each of these individuals are addressed the following question, "Mommy?" Some of the monsters try to scare and impale the lad, but not only is the lad not scared, he pulls some rather amusing jokes, mostly consisting of the disfiguring of their protective coverings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
I've been a Sendak junkie since I was a kid. His books have always been among my vary favorites, and I'm happy to say they're among my kids' favorites as well. I also love pop-ups, so I was really escited to learn about this book. And I must say, my expectations have been surpassed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!Amazingly intricate Pop-up Book.
My kids and I love pop-up books, and I love paper engineering and building castles and palaces out of paper. When I read this book, I was amazed at how intricate the pop-ups were.Whereas most pop-up books may have 5 or so different pieces of paper on each page, this book has what looks to be 3 to 5 times that number of different small pieces of paper that all interconnect and make an amazing picture.I can't believe they were able to produce this book for the retail price!Surely it can't be by machine?Anyways, your kids will love it, although younger ones will need help closing the pages so that the pieces don't get mangled.I might buy 2 - one for the kids to read and probably destroy, and 1 for my collection.Highly recommended if you love pop-up books! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite book to read to my kids
It's fun to read! Great graphics, easy flow, great funny story! It's our alltime favorite. We read it all year round too. Some books they want me to read to them are not much fun for me to read even though they love it, but this one I can't resist! I would recommend it again and again, and will never get rid of this book - even when my kids are grown.

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Halloween Treat!
I have a 3 year old who is just a nut about Halloween and pumpkins. This book is just the perfect story for him and he loves it year round...so far. It's the story of a witch who grows an absolutely huge pumpkin. But the Pumpkin is so big that she cannot get it off the vine and moved. She enlists the aid of similar denizens of the night including a ghost, vampire, mummy, and a bat but none of them can get the Pumpkin moved...until they figure out it takes teamwork and cooperation to get the job done.A truly hilarious story that teachs kids about cooperation. The book is spooky, but never scary. The illustrations are colorful and bold and attractive to especially younger kids.Erica Silverman has made a delightful book that is simply too good to be read only at Halloween time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just a seasonal read
I don't know how we got this book, but what a treasure. My daughter loves the rythym and build of this book. The characters build upon each others' attempt to pluck a witch's pumpkin from her vine. It features the witch, a vampire, a mummy and a bat. They are all non-threatening as the goal is to make and eat a pumkin pie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I read this book to my daughter and son and they loved it.It is my daughter's favorite book. This author is very created in taking you into a different world.Very science fiction.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic that transcends time
This was one of my favorite books when I was growing up. Now that I am a mother, I am thrilled to be able to share this very same story with my own daughter and watch her eyes light up with excitement every time we read it together. My daughter absolutely loves all the colorful, interesting illustrations throughout the book that accompany the equally colorful story. The little imp Max appeals to her "devilish" side, and she laughs with glee as max dons his wolf suit and chases after the dog or as he swings from the vines and marches under the moonlight with the "wild things". This is a book that she really enjoys taking an active part in. How cute it is when she pretends to be one of the wild things...roaring her own little roar and showing her "terrible claws" right along with the story. It is such a wonderful message, too. Max takes an imaginary trip to "Where the Wild Things Are" after being sent to bed without his supper, but even though he becomes King of All Wild Things, he learns that there's nothing more comforting in life than being where he is loved no matter what. And when he "returns" to his room and finds his supper waiting for him, he knows he is truly loved. Such a beautiful story related in a way that both children and adults can relate to.

5-0 out of 5 stars All-time favorite
If my family were to be stranded on a desert island with only 1 picture book, I'd choose this one. It was my favorite when I was a kid, and is now my daughters' favorites. Why? Well, the illustrations, to begin with. Wonderfully detailed and funny, my kids spend several minutes looking over each. My favorite part is the sequence of Max's room turning into a forest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Monsterrific!
I simply MUST put in a plug for this fabulous book! As a mom and an illustrator, I was drawn to the amazing art, and I thought perhaps the kids would like it, too. Oh, MAN! It delivered on all points: Amazing art, perfect rhyme (SO hard to find rhyme that really works in a book; it's spot on), and YES- the kids love it and keep going back to read it over and over. I think they do view it as a bit of a fun challenge- there are lots of details and subtleties in the art and text. And I did have to sing "The Girl from Ipanema" to them, because they've never heard it. Overall-YES! Make more books like this, Adam Rex!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's pronounced Fraaank-unt-steen
Okay. So here was my dilemma. I was supposed to review a children's book of poetry and I had several choices in front of me. I could review the inner city take on "Casey At the Bat". I could do the meaningful one about a Caribbean country. I could do the one about various epitaphs to people of different professions (I am not making this up). Or I could do the goofy monster one. And the ball fell in the goofy monster's court by a loooong shot. You hold "Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich" in your hands, and you may not be sure whether or not to trust it. Should I give this to a child? Will they actually enjoy it? Then you read the tiny byline under the title. "And other stories you're sure to like, because they're all about monsters, and some of them are also about food. You like food, don't you? Well, all right then". Any picture book of poetry that says, "Well, all right then", on its cover has won my irony-laden little heart. It's just a nice plus that the poems inside just happen to be funny, beautifully illustrated, and interesting in all sorts of different ways. 5-0 out of 5 stars YOU MUST OWN THIS BOOK

Editorial Review

Evidently not even Roald Dahl could resist the acronym craze of the early eighties. BFG? Bellowing ferret-faced golfer? Backstabbing fairy godmother? Oh, oh ... Big Friendly Giant! This BFG doesn't seem all that F at first as he creeps down a London street, snatches little Sophie out of her bed, and bounds away with her to giant land. And he's not really all that B when compared with his evil, carnivorous brethren, who bully him for being such an oddball runt. After all, he eats only disgusting snozzcumbers, and while the other Gs are snacking on little boys and girls, he's blowing happy dreams in through their windows. What kind of way is that for a G to behave?Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING! For fans of Roald Dahl.
In England an orphan girl named Sophie couldn't sleep. At this time of night people called it the Witching Hour. They called it the Witching Hour because everyone is in a deep-deep sleep. Sophie sees a TALL DARK figure coming down the wrong side of the road. You have to READ the rest of the book.I enjoy it because its's funny and exciting.

3-0 out of 5 stars The BFG Review
The BFG is a fictional chldren's book. It was written by Roald Dahl and it was published in 1982. Roald Dahl is a great author and he has written other children's books such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Bedtime Story for Kids and Adults Alike
I remember reading this book several years ago and reading it on the bus and at school and before I went to bed. It brought me back to my childhood and the creativity and imagination I had as a child, and I'm sure several readers felt the same way. The story is fun and engaging, and so it makes a great bedtime story that you can read to yourself or to a child who still loves a good tale read out loud. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
Before I begin reviewing this book I must tell you that I am not Charles Moore but his daughter who loves the Tiffany Aching books.
5-0 out of 5 stars Discworld
I've decided he's too good and too prolific for me to write a brand new review every single time I read one of his books. Discworld currently has 34 titles and every one of them will probably knock your socks off. His mind bubbles and flashes like a boiling pot of electric eels, and I simply can't get enough of his writing.
5-0 out of 5 stars another amazing Pratchet book
This book is the sequel to another book called the Wee Free Men{ignore the bad title- it is also a great book] so you should probably read that first. But this book blows every other Pratchet book away. Besides being extremely hillarious, it is also surprisingly heart-warming, and will delight anyone who likes an exciting, well-written fantasy. You won't want to put it down till the very end. It leaves you with tingles inside. If you are looking for a good fantasy book, buy this immediately! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars YOU TURNED THE PAGE!!!
I grew up reading this classic and read it to my students when I was a teacher (they loved it!). Now as a mother, I read it to my own son who gets such a kick out of this hilarious book. Love it, love it, love it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Grover rules
I had this book when I was growing up,I bought it for my son when he was young and now I have bought another for my daughter. We all enjoy this book. Grover is the funniest Sesame Street character. In the story Grover tries to use bricks, string, ect. to keep the kids from turning pages because of the monster at the end of the book. My kids loved turning the pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rampaging Dog!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a sweet book. Especially when puppies come out of the volcano. It's pretty funny when Dogzilla eats the mice furniture and that's just the appetizer. She eats the whole store! Check out the funny ratings in the beginning of the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Funny a few times
Dogzilla has interesting illustrations and a long series of jokes, funny at different ages. My 2-year old likes most of it, except the bits with no dog in them (note that although she is dog-crazed, other books do not have to have a dog on every page; she likes good text, too). I found it funny the first few times, but it doesn't hold up to the number of readings she requires to digest a book. We tire of it and hide it before she is done with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best kids books in a long time
"Dogzilla" is hillarious to say the least. We discovered this book quite by accident while waiting for an appointment. We read this book five times before our name was called and laughed until the tears were streaming down our cheeks. I had to write down the information before leaving because we had to get our own copy. Well thanks to grandparents and amazon we've laughed our way through this book several more times. Even sent it to school with my four year old to share with his class and they laughed their way through it too. well worth the money as it will quickly become a treasured favorite for the whole family. most definitely five stars. ... Loved this book and can't wait until my toddler will learn to read and appreciate it for himself. All about being true to yourself and accepting your traits as your own.

Another reviewer said she loved the line that Leonardo made a "very big decision."I love that line, too, as well as the entire list of reasons Sam spews regarding why he's crying. One of them is that he "slipped in the bathtub while trying to wash out the bird poo that his brother's cockatoo pooped on his head."I'd cry too!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Monsters can be Silly too!
The book is thirty pages long in dark black pages with bright happy and sad colorful faces with two holes for the eyes and the larger shape opening for the nose. In the front of the book is the diagram that explains the steps to use the flaps. A child who is not yet able to read will know how to follow these self-explanatory steps with cute pictures. First the book gets opened with the flap being lifted, read the text and try on the mask while pretending to have fun!
5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful Book!
My 2-year old just loves this book! Yes, as one reviewer mentioned, the "masks" are a bit unwieldy to manipulate, but the pictures are adorable, and the text is charming -- my Sophie tries to "read" along even though she doesn't know what the words mean, and she mimics the faces and my tone of voice. I got this book as a hand-me-down, but I would gladly pay for it (and may end up doing so, as our copy is getting demolished with wear!).

2-0 out of 5 stars Cute idea, but not practical for rambunctious toddlers
I purchased this book to talk about feelings with my almost two year old son.Unless you have a child that is VERY careful with handling books, trying to play with the fold-out masks is more frustrating than a learning tool. 5-0 out of 5 stars Crowd Pleaser
This is hands-down the absolute favorite book of the children in the "parent and me" class where I work. The children are ages birth-4, and I get the undivided attention of the 1-4-year olds (the 2-4 year olds "read along" and the 1-year olds are fascinated with the excitement shown by the 2-4 year olds) when I read this to them. They would gladly hear it everyday, and each time i read it they ask me to read it one more time.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Book - a review of "Go Away, Big Green Monster"
This is a fun book for the six and under set.[Amazon has a recommendation of 4 to 8 years of age but I would think toddlers would like it, and that the book wouldn't hold much extended interest for those over five.]
4-0 out of 5 stars It was really sharp!
While reading this book to my baby, I got a paper cut from the monster's big red mouth with sharp white teeth! Many babies and children with soft skins will read this book and they might have the same kind of experience as mine. I wish this book were made of harder paper without this kind of danger.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not your average sequel
Something strange is happening in New York City and all over the world. Garbage is piling up, dogs are running away from cats (and rats) and people are being bitten on the subway by other people. Despite all this a band is born, hoping to break into the big time before civilization breaks down and there is no one left to appreciate them.
3-0 out of 5 stars Face the Music
Vampires really do exist. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Story Where A Teen Band Takes On Vampires
Strange things are happening in New York City. Stranger than usual, that is. In fact it is down right scary in a paranormal kind of way. Black liquid spurts out of fire hydrants; rats, more numerous than ever, are roving the streets; and people suddenly go crazy, like the woman who throws all of her belongings out her sixth floor apartment window all the while screaming about who knows what. One about-to-be-discarded object catches the attention of two teen onlookers. The crazy lady waves a mid-seventies Fender Stratocaster with gold pickups and whammy bar. Pearl and Moz, strangers until this moment, work together to catch this valuable guitar before it crashes to the pavement. A quick glance above and both glimpse human figures moving swiftly towards the crazy woman's window. Neither comments aloud on this phenomenum. Instead they excitedly talk about their passion for music and the possibility of forming a band.

5-0 out of 5 stars Faeries Forever
If I could give this book 10 stars I would! Brian Frouds'"Faeries" is the most amazing book I have ever read. I found this book when I was young and fell in love with faeries instantly. The illustrations are astonishing for a lack of better word. Alan Lee and Brian Froud not only draw the most realistic and imaginitive faeries, but the stories included in the pagess really makes you believe that faeries are real. Brian Froud is the original faerie author and has influenced an whole new genre with his artwork.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fair Faeries
This was a gift for a dear friend who is quite Faery-like herself.I've given several of Mr. Froud's faery books to people, and they are inevitably very pleased.Mr. Froud is a sensitive artist and captures the "Shining Folk" or "Lords and Ladies" very impressively, almost as though he were in touch with the Elemental Kingdoms himself, consciously or unconciously. These are splendid gifts for the imaginative, whether child or adult, and I recommend them very highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A World In A Book
Faeries is the absolute greatest art book when it comes to fantasy, and that is because of the content, and the artists involved, as well as the quality in which it was printed and published in this, the 25th Anniversary Edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars An fun-filled story, excellent for young girls
We first met 12-year-old Emily in THE TAIL OF EMILY WINDSNAP and learned her secret: she's half-mermaid, half-human. Emily, however, never knew this secret herself until she took swimming lessons. Not only does she discover her fishy genes, she also learns that her father, a merman, didn't abandon her as a baby after all. Instead, he was imprisoned by the angry ruler of the oceans, Neptune, who found out about the illegal love affair between her human mother and merman father. At the end of the book, the family is reunited and sent to live in a secret place where humans and merfolk can live together in harmony.

This is my introduction for the Goosebumps book It Came From Beneath the Sink. This is a great book to me because it has good chase scenes, its funny, and it's somewhat scary. The reason its scary is because a cannibal sponge with razor sharp teeth wants to kill the main characters. It's funny because that blood thirsty sponge well, it's a sponge! The chase scenes are goo
