4-0 out of 5 stars Its and Bits of Small Steps
Small Steps is a book about a boy named Thedore(Armpit) who tries to turn his life around. While doing so, his friend X-Ray gets him into this scheme to sell tickets to the biggest popstar sensation, Kaira DeLeon. Miraculously, through his disabled nieghbor he develops a relationship with Kaira.
4-0 out of 5 stars An Awsome book
The book small steps is Awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have all ready recomended it to my whole class. I think this book was very adventueres but still could have happend. Pleeeeeeease make a sequel to this book

3-0 out of 5 stars A Little Boring
Small Steps is too predictable in the first half. You can tell what is going to happen with X-ray and Armpit trying to sell the scalped tickets but it takes too long to get there. The second half is where it gets exciting and unpredictable. In the first half you see the puzzle pieces before they're in, in the second half puzzle pieces come flying in from all different directions. Will X-ray and Armpit sell the scalped tickets? Is Armpit in love with Tatiana, a girl at school, or the famous singer Kaira DeLeon? I think it has too much bad language and in a competition Holes would win 24-7. Others may disagree but this is what I think. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Way to Help Children Grow Up Realizing Their Greatness
I recently purchased Wayne Dyer's "Whole Kit & Kaboddle" from my local public television station - a set that included several great books, CD's & a DVD - all around the subject of inspiration.Included in this set was Mr. Dyer's latest children's book, "Incredible You!".

It is people like Murdoch that we need to keep away from our children, not Dr. Dyer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for toddlers
My 20 month toddler LOVES this book. We bought it because he had bitten a couple of times. He wants to read it almost every night and since we introduced the book, he has stopped biting. I like it that he enjoys the book so much and asks to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for Toddlers
My two little grandchildren love this book. Both were "biters" until I got this book for them and started reading it to them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ouch! Biting hurts!
My (nearly) 3 year old daughter and I love this book. In our family, it's important to us to show how our actions affect other people. It's important to us not to retaliate in kind when someone hurts us. I really like how "Teeth Are Not For Biting" shows that even though we may feel rotten, there are other things to do instead - Things that don't hurt ourselves or others. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My kids love this book
I have a 3 year old and 5 year old who love the books of Mo Willems. Recently the 5 year old took this book to school as his 'show and tell' in order to read it to his class. It was a huge success! We started our Mo Willems collection with 'Don't let the Pidgeon drive the Bus', we've added 'the Pidgeon finds a Hotdog' and 'Don't let the Pidgeon stay up late' and just recently added this book and 'the pidgeon has feeling too'. I love these books because my kids love them and that encourages them to keep reading! Well done Mo Willems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
Our first Mo Willems book was Knuffle Bunny and we were hooked. We've sinced bought 4 more of his books including The Pigeon Loves Things That Go! They're all great. Our kids love them and for kids books they're pretty darn amusing for adults too. Good stuff!

2-0 out of 5 stars boring

4-0 out of 5 stars the carnivorus carnival
"Rraww," growled the prowling lions in this book, The Carnivorous Carnival. When this book begins, Violet, Sunny and Klaus are trapped in Count Olaf's car trunk as they go to Madam Lulu's carnival. At the carnival, it is weird. The Baudelaires worked at the House of Freaks, where people make fun of them. Also there were deadly lions there too, which ate people, a dangerous roller coaster, andMadam Lulu's strange crystal ball. Eventually Count Olaf decide to put the House of Freaks in the lion's den.The other freaks must fight the Baudelaires. None of the freaks falls into the lion's den.The Baudelaires barely escape, but with Count Olaf. I'd recommend this book because it is suspenseful, humorous and has interesting characters.
5-0 out of 5 stars freaks and fear and the breaking of formula
Here is the ninth volume in Lemony Snicket's bestselling children's collection A Series of Unfortunate Events. The Baudelaire orphans had hidden in the trunk of Count Olaf's car at the end of The Hostile Hospital to escape from a fire that Olaf and his "associates" had set. With The Carnivorous Carnival They arrive at the Caligari Carnival out in the middle of the hinterlands and are able to get out of the trunk before Count Olaf discovers them. Klaus, Violet, and Sunny disguise themselves as Carnival Freaks so that they can stay at the Carnival and have the opportunity to discover some facts about the possibility of one of their parents still living and the rest of the "Snicket File". Klaus and Violet are disguised as a Two-Headed Freak Beverly / Eliot, Sunny is Chabo the Wolf Baby. They join with other freaks, like Kevin the Ambidextrous Man, Colette the Contortionist, and Hugo the Hunchback.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Snicket's Best
In the ninth installment of the Series of Unfortunate Events, The Carnivorous Carnival, Mr. Snicket leaves behind the basic kids get a new guardian, Count Olaf tries to get them once again outline of the first eight books. This is the first book in the series where the Baudelaires are guardianless. Instead, they find themselves stuck in a sinister plot involving Count Olaf and his troupe, an enigmatic fortune teller, and one damn creepy carnival. This book is quite well-written, and Tim Curry perfectly depicts the sinister quality on the book-on-tape version.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sharp Looking Book
My daughter has loved Thomas since she was about a year old (she's 3 now) and this was a great present because A) She LOVES anything Thomas, B) She wants to read this book all the time and C) It seems to have sparked a love for books.
5-0 out of 5 stars great Thomas collection
My son is a large Thomas fan. he first knew Thomas just from the trains, then he saw the show. Since he loves to read I wanted to combine 2 of his favorite things. This book did just that. It's a nice hardcover edition with enough Thomas stories to keep anyone entertained for a long time. There are nice pictures and an attached bookmark for him to keep track of his place. Highly recommend

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Pleasant Surprise
My adorable 2-1/2 year old grandson just loves Thomas The Train. However, his Nana (me) doesn't have a clue.So not to be ignorant, I ordered this book and was thrilled to see the wonderful illustrations as well as finding it to be a "story collection" about all the different trains. My grandson actually named all the different trains (how he does this I do not know), and I could verify that he was correct by reading the stories. The book is kept at Nana's house and Braden looks forward to reading it every time he comes for a visit. I don't think anyone would be disappointed in this book.It would make a wonderful gift! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Aaaaaawww!
I got this book when I was 6 and I still like it! It is the touching story of little Lilly, who loves her teacher but hates him when he takes away her purple plastic purse and sunglasses. It is sooo cute and very fun to read. It is very true-to-life, unlike those other stupid books that think they're tapping into the minds of children. I highly recommend this book. I even have a kid-sized purple plastic purse and a Lilly stuffed animal! This is such a cute book. 5 stars and perfect for any age!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Kevin Henkes hit
We read two books to our daughter every night. With that in mind, we pay careful attention to the books we buy to read her. I love all of Kevin Henkes' books. They are both visually delightful and entertaining for both my daughter and I. He manages to be intelligent without being corny, and as I am reading I honestly feel like her vocabulary is being broadened. He never "dumbs down" his book with easy wording. I am also an English teacher and appreciate all aspects of his work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous--another great Kevin Henkes book
I just started student teaching this semester and this was the first book I read to my third grade class. Some read it already, but were still very excited to hear it again and again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good early-reader history book!
I browsed and browsed before finding a book I felt was proper to read to my two young children about Thanksgiving;this one was it.3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but whitewashes history a bit.
This is a good, easy-to-read description of the Pilgrim's journey to America, their hard winter, and the first "Thanksgiving" celebration. However, I think it whitewashes history a little too much. It virtually ignores the tension that existed between the Pilgrims and Indians. There needs to be a happy median struck between telling the truly wonderful aspects of that first Thanksgiving -- how the two peoples were able to come together, if only for a short time, to share the celebration -- while acknowledging there were difficulties in the relationship between Pilgrims amd Indians. This isn't being "politically correct" -- it's just acknowledging the truth to our children that relationships between those two groups of peoples were not usually easy. Life is complex, even for young children -- they will understand and appreciate being told the full story.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good addition to your child's historical library
This history of the Pilgrims is very complete, given the reading level of the book.It is written for second to third grade students. The story covers the reasons for leaving England, the journey across the Atlantic, the first horrible winter, the meeting of Samoset and Squanto, the help given by the Indians and the Harvest Feast itself. The artwork is nicely done and adds to the content. Second grade students may find new vocabulary and challenging words to read, while third grade students should find the reading easy.A good asset for the teaching of American history to early elementary students. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The first is still the best!
Don't let the name fool you, this is not a farm animal book in any aspect. This is a legend, really! I first read this book in middle school, while all the other kids were reading Goosebump-like books I was delving into this funny, bold and often sad treasure.
5-0 out of 5 stars a story well put
the pigman... paul zindel, in all his books, most especially this one, gives us a charming, more sophisticated depiction of teenage life. he doesnt categorize his characters, good, bad, spoiled, ugly, beautiful. john isnt just "the rebel teen", every one of his actions, and the the things his characters says, are justified, and if not justified, explained. meaning, theres a story behind each character, so that then you know " well thats why they did what they did". or, "thats definately something she'd say". john and lorraine think, and have consciences. and romance is lightly laid over them. all in all... its awesome.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Pigman by zach
This books title is The Pigman by Paul Zindel. In the beginning Lorraine and John, two high school students, tell about themselves and the people around them. They also tell about the things they like to do such as make prank phone calls and hang around the cemetery with friends and drink. This book is about how the Pigman makes them realize that people they like will not always be around. In one part they are looking around the Pigman's house and they find the Pigman's wife's funeral bill.

5-0 out of 5 stars A suprising twist!
When the reader starts Chapter 1, they think this is going to be another, long, dull pirate ship with lame "adventures." (Trust me, that is what I thought)
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Delightful!!
I first heard about this book when my son was in 3rd grade back in 1994 and the teacher was reading it aloud to the class. I then, this year (2006) remembered it and took it out of the library. I was mesmerized by the story (even as an adult) because I am a sailor! I could just imagine Charlotte donning her sailor's garb and climbing the rigging!I love how she started out prim and proper, then she became Captain of the ship! I too am a Captain, and this story (although fiction) is a great role model for young girls today. I especially loved the ending where she leaves her stuffy life behind, arrives at the dock and the boat "sails with the morning tide". I imagined the boat pulling out of port at first light and watching the sun rise over the horizon. The writing is so vivid, and the story is so alive, that I could almost smell the salt air!I loved the book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Story
I loved this book because it drew you into the 19th century lifestyle at sea.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bananas Gorilla and kids...
My copy of this book is chewed, back broken, torn, taped, worn out by the use of my own children and years of my students in my Primary classrooms. I recall reading this with my younger brother and that was just forever ago. Some books just stand the test of time and this is one of those. As a teacher I know very young children like to categorize, inspect, look for something(well what else explains I SPY books?)and ferret out details. Scarry definitely "got that". I've seen children slip inside these pages and be entertained and cataloging for really long periods of time. Not that I'm suggesting it for that reason ALONE. My daughter Sylvia was definitely one of those kinds of children and she always searched for Bananas Gorilla. I had several videos that were made of the Richard Scarry world (get them) and at a very young age-two to three- she loved those in combination with the books. My son much later was similarly enthralled and now I use this material when the Standards hockers aren't looking teaching my 1st grade with students who have ELD needs-second language development. This particular book I really like because the early years social studies curriculum is "community" based and this attends to those understandings so well. I recommend this as a teacher to families, and with parent interaction and co-exploring it's a very fun afternoon activity.

5-0 out of 5 stars worn out
I am attempting to order another copy of this wonderful book because my 40 year old son remembers my reading it to him as a little boy and he wants a copy for his two year old son!The conversations you can have with your child as you examine the pages are incredible! Our copy is completely worn out, but I have saved it for when he visits!

5-0 out of 5 stars My best book of all time
I got this book as a prize when I was 8, and I loved it every minute. I have read this book so many times and this has been a blast 18 years owning it. It has been my source for dreams of many of my childhood dreams and these illustrations are so good. If you are looking to buy your kid a book, do yourself a favor and get this own. This book is awesome.I think my husband and I enjoy this more than our son!The art work is fantastic and the story really captures this little girls frightening experience at the laundry mat!

5-0 out of 5 stars I Can't Wait To Read This Book To My New Granddaughter!
KNUFFLE BUNNY received the CALDECOTT HONOR award for 2004.The Caldecott Medal "shall be awarded to the artist of the most distinguished American Picture Book for Children published in the United States during the preceding year. The award shall go to the artist, who must be a citizen or resident of the United States, whether or not he or she is the author of the text."The runner-up of the Caldecott Award is called the 'Caldecott Honor Award.'So right away we know the pictures and the story are superior to most other children's books. And I can attest to the fact that this is one of the best I've seen for babies and toddlers.I know that this book is geared towards the preschool to first grade group but the pictures and text are very elementary so I imagine even little ones can identify with this story.

I LOVE Willems's books. They are all awesome! His illustrations and story lines are hillarious and fun to read aloud. The pictures in this book are especially witty as he used photographs of a real city with overlays of his own simple chracter drawings.(No, he's not paying me to say all this!)If you pay attention, you'll see a cameo of Willems's infamous "Pigeon," too!Great for youngsters and parents to read together, and will become a family favorite! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Charming adventure story
The story (and series) centers on a family of four orphaned siblings, 14 year-old Henry, 12 year-old Jessie, 10 year-old Violet and 5 year-old Benny. The four have runaway and are attempting to live on their own in order to avoid being split up or sent to live with their mean grandfather. They locate an abandoned boxcar in the woods and set up housekeeping there. They manage quite well until Violet falls ill causing them to ask the local doctor for all.In the end though all is well.
5-0 out of 5 stars So simple and so wonderful!
These books are wonderful. My son who loves sci-fi, dragons and lego, thinks these wonderful books are AWESOME! They capture his attention like no others. As I read these to aloud to him, he laughs, asks questions and wishes he could be there. Although the writing is very simple, the ideas behind them are not. When I first started reading this series to him he said to me,"Mom while you are reading I always feel like I am there with the children doing what they are doing." "YEAH!" Great stories about children who are THINKING and I love my son to want to emulate that!

3-0 out of 5 stars If I were king of the forest...
I used to like these books. Now I think they are stupid. Especially Benny. He is so stupid. And he's really annoying. There has to be at least five billion books in the series. Anyone that has all of the books in the series must really, really, really, really, really love them. Why do they call their grandfather "Grandfather"? Violet's like "Oh Grandfather! You can have all of my internal organs if you want." Then Benny's like "What's green?" Then their Grandfather is always taking them on these pointless trips for no reason whatsoever. You would think that they would either run out of places to go or get tired of going on the trips. I would be suprised if they had a week at home in one year. Why do they call them the Boxcar Children? In some books they probobly don't even have the word boxcar in some of the books. Don't they ever go to school? Acually I wouldn't be suprised if Benny didn't go to school considering he's so stupid and annoying. They are so cheesy. No family gets along that well and never fights. If there was a family like that it would be a miracle. And I'm talking about ones with more than one child. And nobody has that perfect of a life. I bet they never had one problem or something bad happening to them in the hole series. If I never liked these books then I would have given this series one star. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The 10 star book "Tears ofa Tiger"
This book is amazing. It really gets you to think about a lot of things. You always say well that will never happen to me, but niether did Andy. It is a story that so many kids can relate to . Sharon Draper really out did herself in this book. This is the kind of book i could read over and over and over and never get tired of reading it. It really touched me in a special place and thought me that tomorrow is not promised and never take what you have or the people in your life for granted. I give this book 10 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars beyond amazing.
words cant explain how good this book was. i had to read it for a school thing and i read it in an hour it was so good. and so meaningful. its one of the reasons i will never drink. im fourteen and all my friends do but i dont plan on drinking ever, and defiantly not getting drunk. i was balling my eyes out. crying SO hard over this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Read for Middle School children
This book deals very well with controversial topics such as drunk driving and suicide. Draper tells the story in a matter of fact manner that students will read and learn from. As a teacher of middle school children, I found this book very helpful and moving and well researched. Though somewhat predictable and heavyhanded, the story achieves it purpose and would be welcome in any classroom library. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Poor Stanley. He's a perfectly normal boy until one morning he wakes up flat. After his parents peel the incriminating bulletin board off of him, Stanley must adjust to life as a pancake. He is a boy who takes this kind of thing in stride, though, and soon he's enjoying the advantages of squashedness.Sliding under closed doors is fun, and it's gratifying to be of use to his mother when she drops her ring through a narrow metal grating. Expensive plane fare to California? No problem. Svelte Stanley folds comfortably into a brown paper envelope. There's even room left over in there for an egg-salad sandwich. But Stanley's true moment of glory comes when a gang of thieves begins stealing paintings from the Famous Museum of Art. The case seems hopeless--until our two-dimensional hero saves the day. Here is one boy who doesn't let his profile-challenged body stop him from living life fully--that is, until his brother finds a way to help him become well rounded again. Jeff Brown's matter-of-fact tone and Tomi Ungerer's witty and engaging drawings tickle the funny bone, making this 1964 classic a perennial favorite. (Ages 4 to 8) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Well-Rounded Adventure
Stanley has been squashed flat by his bulletin board! Now that's he's only a half-inch thick, he can slide under doors, get mailed in extra large envelopes, and be flown like a kite. When The Famous Museum of Art needs a special favor, Stanley is ready to help.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I read this with my [...] sister and she loved it! It's a little too hard for her age because there are some vocabulary she didn't even understand but I helped her and she got along with the book very well. Very funny and humorous.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Fun
A truly original premise requiring more than the usual suspension of disbelief, Flat Stanley delivers a light-hearted journey through the life of Stanley Lambchop.Stanley, a typical American boy, finds his life suddenly transformed when he is flattened by a bulletin board. His parents, in language and wit, sound like a television show family from the 50's, but with the off-beat humor and implausible story-line, it somehow all works wonderfully.Jeff Brown has created an interesting dynamic in describing the relationship between Stanley and his older brother, Arthur, who is intermittently inconsiderate and jealous of Stanley's new-found celebrity.Ultimately, however, it is Arthur who saves the day and returns Stanley to his proper size.It is a very engaging, upbeat story that is a fun read for the toddler set.I highly recommend it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A way to connect
I read When I was young in the mountains, then took it to my father, who read it.Rylant is slightly older than me, but she grew up near where my dad was born and raised. My father said after reading that he'd pretty much grown up the same way.He left the poverty of Appalachia as a teenager via the poor man's college-- the service.I was born and raised in Utah.Books such as When I was young in the Mountains were a way for me to connect with a way of life I knew very little about, and I am very thankful for Rylant's work, especially since Dad died recently.

5-0 out of 5 stars West Virginia
Growing up in West Virginia myself, I relate to to this book. Although I'm now 20 and currently attending college, I still love to read it. It is something I plan to read to my children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Memories of the Mountaina
This book showed us what is best about the mountains and the traditions of those living in those mountains. It has been so easy for our society to stereotype Appalachian mountain people as ignorant, backwards hillbillies that it is refreshing to see a depiction that shows mountain people in a different light. The old ways are disappearing. So are the mountains. The Appalachian mountains are one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world, containing one of the most diverse hardwood forests on earth.Mountain top coal removal, strip mining, and valley fills are destroying these mountains.Soon, the only way we will be able to show our children the beauty and wonder of these mountains will be through books and memories. "When I Was Young in the Mountains" will be a treasure in our house for generations.I encourage everyone to not only read this book, but also to support efforts to stop destructive, non-sustainable coal mining practices so we will be able to show our children and grandchildren more than just beautiful pictures of what once existed! ... This book served not only as a wonderful reference, but also provoked various discussions between my [...] son, my husband and myself. It's written in a manner that was easy for my son to understand and it continues to hold his interest. We haven't finished with it as of yet, but so far it has provided us with another avenue in dealing with our child's anxiety issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Almost Didn't Get - Glad I Did
Jamie Lee Curtis' books have been a running present theme for my friend's daughter. So when her 5th birthday came up this book was an obvious choice. As I was looking over reviews, I saw the one from Cynthia L. Souza where she states the boy is giving the finger. I couldn't believe that Jamie would have this in a book. There was no way I was going to buy this if it was true so I went to the bookstore to check it out. Cynthia was way off base. The boy is simply holding his hand up in a "Stop" gesture. There is nothing wrong with this illustration. I gave a sigh of relief that my friend's daughter could continue to collect these books that she loves.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son loves this book!
The illustrations are great and my son loves this book.It addresses kindergarten, a younger sibling, and being told "no" when a child really wants to hear "yes," all in terms a kid can relate to.He wants to read it every night before bed!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Pretty Good Read
This book is highly entertaining. I am a HUGE fan of Judy Blume; she has written some of my favorite books. While this was a good book, I would have to say that I prefer Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great and Superfudge. This was still highly enjoyable and had a few laugh-out-loud funny parts. And who cares if it is a little unrealistic? What's wrong with a silly read every once in awhile? So anyway, I give it 4 stars.
5-0 out of 5 stars you'll laugh till you cant no more!
Hi well to start.... THIS IS SUCH A GREAT BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ever since the first chapter I couldn't stop laughing it's that good. From ruining his homework to eating his turtle Fudge is an accadent waiting to happen!
