5-0 out of 5 stars For Elementary School Kids and their Grandpa's
This book is said to be suitable for ages 8 (3rd Grade) and up. It's also extremely suited for grandparents. It combines an interesting story line, Captain Lubber is sailing the world searching for the vicious female pirate Arabella Drummond. The book purports to be his journal or log of the trip and what he learned along the way. It is printed on a heavy parchment paper, and filled with activities requiring that you look at a little book glued onto a page, or tie knots with the strings on another page.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just for Kids
While this is graded for ages 3 and older, it's reviewed here so that all ages will see it, as nobody with an interest in pirates will want to miss the captivating, gorgeous PIRATEOLOGY: A PIRATE HUNTER'S COMPANION. Here is the journal of Captain William Lubber, who sailed in search of female pirate Arabella Drummond. Dugald Steer edits an account which is vivid, packed with photos and illustration, and holds pockets of 'letters' throughout, along with a compass embedded in its cover. Maps and drawings are excellent and entire families will appreciate the coverage; not just kids~

a beaufully crafted book. the art of pop-ups still has a magical effect that brings out the child in all of us. the content is informative, and the illustrations are wonderfull. if that isn't enough, the pop ups take it over the top. trully magnificent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick Read
I bought this for my 13 year old daughter. She opened the book, read what interested her and never touched the book again.Although she did state the advice was good and mostly common sense.I sat and read it cover to cover and did realize most everything is common sense placed in a cute format. It is a very quick and entertaining read (silly illustrations).I would purchase this for a pre-teen not a know-it-all teen.Suggested age 9-12.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful, 5 stars, no doubt!
A Smart Girl's Guide To Sticky Situations is the best book I have ever owned. It actually talks about the things thatgirl pre-teens andgirl teenagers have to go through when they are becoming a "woman" over time. This book really helped me in all topics. It helped me with periods the most...which is about the most confusing thing once teenagers know about what it is, how it works, what to do, and most of all how to protect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Realizing their impact
I purchased several copies of this book, a copy for my children and one for each of their classrooms as a gift. This book is easily read by children and to children. It clearly explains the impact of their actions on others and to THEMSELVES and then gives them the choice of what they want to occur in their world.A very basic introduction to the "ripple effect" on world peace.I would also recommend similar books by this same author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our son has never been so enthralled over a book
We bought this book for our 8 yr. old son and it's the first book that we couldn't pry from his hands.I never thought I'd hear myself say, "Son, would you please stop reading.".The illustration in the book as well as all the elements are beautiful and it's just so full of interesting "things" including a bunch of stickers. The stickers are so beautiful that my son didn't want to use them so they wouldn't get messed up. He wanted to keep them perfectly preserved.Every page is a suprise. He loved this book so much that he begged us to buy Pirateology and we didn't hesitate.

The model dragon was cool and you can even hang it from the ceiling
3-0 out of 5 stars Purchase for the Dragon model
I originally bought this for my nephews, who have a fascination with dragons and such at the moment. It's definitely a result of the Harry Potter phenomenon, but the similarity ends at its "magical" quality. Its intent is the opening of minds to the hidden worlds of the imagination, and a rekindling of young peoples' interests in areas of mythology and classic literature. Supposedly the work of the last dragonmaster, the book aims to dispel the myths on dragons, recalling Hagrid's comments that they are "very misunderstood creatures". While Dragonology has lots of bells and whistles and moving parts, this is a simple guide to tracking and identifying dragons of various types, and the information within can also be found in either the first Dragonology text, or the Handbook. The Dragon model, used for identifying dragons in the wild, is quite a treat, however, and easily assembled, though I would expect it to be easier for 10+ year olds. The model itself is made from very thick, durable cardboard (almost like wood), and, for the price of less than $10, it's a decent value. While the tracking guide is great for stimulating the imagination of children (of all ages, apparently), it's a slightly more involved text than Dragonology (and on par with the Handbook, from which it was derived), and therefore also likely to appeal to children 10+. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Life in colonial New England from the perspective of a child
Life in New England in colonial times was hard, a good growing year and people could eat well, a bad growing year and there was hunger. Harvest was an especially busy time, as everyone had to work all hours to get all of the food stored away.
4-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books growing up!
I ordered this to reminisce. I remember vividly the pages and drawings that I loved in this book!! Drawings are very precious and expressive. The text of this original 1960s version is a bit dated (mentions Indians as a threat to the lives of settlers - true but not really PC to say it). There is an updated version of the book, which I haven't read. Love this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Friend or Clique?
As an educator (elementary principal), I see students faced daily with decisions that place them to either leave someone out, or they themselves, are left out. Trevor does a fabulous job of explaining how/why a "clique" can be hurtful. Students learn how to spot "a fake", how to make and keep friends, popularity truths/myths, and tips for cliques/friendships. The book is "kid friendly" and an easy-read. At the end of 2006, this book should be made into a dvd and we can't wait! If you are not familar with Trevor's other books/dvds, make sure you check them out. They are a great resource for students - whether you are an educator or a parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great illustrations make this a real treat.
While unpacking our books after a recent move, I came across "Oobleck" and spent ten minutes or so to reread it for the first time in at least 20 years. While the storyline is fairly simple, Dr. Seuss' wonderful illustrations make this a fun book for readers of all ages. Buy it, read it to your kids (or anyone's kids!), and be sure to let them inspect each page to see all the great little details in the drawings. The facial expressions are particularly entertaining.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great story for making up voices...
Although "Bartholomew and the Oobleck" is different in style than the Dr Seuss books most people are familiar with, it is still a good story. Bartholomew is pageboy to the king, and apparently the smartest person in the kingdom. When the king orders his magicians make "something new" fall from the sky, with disasterous consequences, which threaten to bury the kingdom under an ocean of green sludge, only Bartholomew takes action.5-0 out of 5 stars A timeless classic for children and adults
Bartholomew and the Oobleck begins with the King of Did being irritated and bored with the weather. His page, Bartholmew, tries to enlighten the king with simple common sense. The king ignores him and turns to (literally) magical solutions for his current peeve. When the results turn disastrous, Barthlomew tries to warn his friends in the castle. No one listens to him, being more concerned with their own business and as a result, they all end up worse off. Then, when the king finally listens to him, a ray of hope appears amidst the crisis. Editorial Review

Open the mummy-shaped box.... Smell the must of the tomb.... Reveal the secrets within.... Included among these secrets are a 24-page booklet all about real-life mummies and the people who study them, a 10-inch plastic-model body, and four carved heads of gods to protect the Canopic jars where you'll store the plastic organs found inside the body--both lungs in a single jar, please! Find the hidden drawer containing the gauze wrappings, headdress, scarabs, and a cardboard cat you can mummify to accompany your Pharaoh in the afterlife. Wrap your mummy from head to toe, place lucky amulets in the gauze, and bury it in the back yard (soak the gauze in brine first for a more realistic mummy experience). Don't forget to seal the tomb with your "Curse of the Mummy" sticker ... and to warn your parents, so when they rent the expensive tiller to dig up the garden, they don't break the blades on your ultracool mummy.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cool, but overpriced
My kids (10 & 11) had fun exploring this. No one has yet discovered the "craft" side of it. Still it would be a nicer treat from the Clearance isle. Full price is a little much for what you get.

2-0 out of 5 stars Time intensive cutting and gluing for assembly
Time intensive cutting and gluing of small pieces.Frustration level of trying to get all the little pieces to stay together with glue overshadowed the learning. My daughter loves Egyptian history, but became bored with this kit because of the time involved in putting the canopic jars and cat mummy together. Would have been much better if kit had come with premade canopic jars (or something easier to assemble.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Best
Like many kids his age, my seven year old son is VERY interested in mummies. (I think it's one of those ways kids cope with beginning to understand the concept of death and death rituals, so I figure it's okay to indulge his macabre interests!!) Anyways, I paid $19.99 for this kit at a local museum, and even at five dollars more than the Amazon price, it was a great value! The enclosed book that comes with the kit is terrific on it's own. It starts by explainging about ancient Egyptian mummies, the rituals surrounding their production, and why these rituals were important to the ancients. As the book describes the rituals in very kid-friendly but still no-holds-barred kind of way, your child can follow along with the enclosed kit pieces to make his own super-cool mummy. There are even canopic jars! The book then goes on to describe where else mummies can be found and discusses how some are intentionally made by man while others occur naturally due to environmental conditions. Top notch all the way through! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars do you like a stories inside a greater story?
The story King Arthur, which was written by Roger Lancelyn Green, is a truly exhilarating adventure set in the middle ages, and it contained many fascinating characters such as King Arthur, who was the king of Logres and who was one of the most important characters in the story; another character is Lancelot who was one of the best Knights of the round table and went on many quests, bringing much honor to Logres, and was quite important through out the book; another character would be Queen Morgana le Fay, she was not only a witch, but also the sister and nemesis of King Arthur, she often tried to capture or kill him and his knights, but in the end she makes peace with him; last but not least is Merlin, he is one of the best know characters, he is a wizard who saves King Arthur life twice, and foretells the future many a time; eventually he is buried alive by Lady Nimue until he is needed once again.
5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you needed to know about King Arthur but were afraid to ask!
This was the first King Arthur book I ever had. In more recent years I've read Le Morte D'Arthur, the Mabinogion, Bulfinch's Age of Chivalry, and a hundred othercollections, some for children and some for adults. This is still the best-written, most comprehensive version I've found.
1-0 out of 5 stars AWFUL ARTHUR!!!
This book was the worst!!! I usually enjoy reading books, but I didn't enjoy one little microscopic segment of this book!!!It was really hard to understand, and it felt like that all Roger Lancelyn Green cared about was death!! I mean really in one chapter I counted that 12 people died!!! In one single chapter!!!!! ... Read more
