5-0 out of 5 stars Bananas Gorilla and kids...
My copy of this book is chewed, back broken, torn, taped, worn out by the use of my own children and years of my students in my Primary classrooms. I recall reading this with my younger brother and that was just forever ago. Some books just stand the test of time and this is one of those. As a teacher I know very young children like to categorize, inspect, look for something(well what else explains I SPY books?)and ferret out details. Scarry definitely "got that". I've seen children slip inside these pages and be entertained and cataloging for really long periods of time. Not that I'm suggesting it for that reason ALONE. My daughter Sylvia was definitely one of those kinds of children and she always searched for Bananas Gorilla. I had several videos that were made of the Richard Scarry world (get them) and at a very young age-two to three- she loved those in combination with the books. My son much later was similarly enthralled and now I use this material when the Standards hockers aren't looking teaching my 1st grade with students who have ELD needs-second language development. This particular book I really like because the early years social studies curriculum is "community" based and this attends to those understandings so well. I recommend this as a teacher to families, and with parent interaction and co-exploring it's a very fun afternoon activity.

5-0 out of 5 stars worn out
I am attempting to order another copy of this wonderful book because my 40 year old son remembers my reading it to him as a little boy and he wants a copy for his two year old son!The conversations you can have with your child as you examine the pages are incredible! Our copy is completely worn out, but I have saved it for when he visits!

5-0 out of 5 stars My best book of all time
I got this book as a prize when I was 8, and I loved it every minute. I have read this book so many times and this has been a blast 18 years owning it. It has been my source for dreams of many of my childhood dreams and these illustrations are so good. If you are looking to buy your kid a book, do yourself a favor and get this own. It was my best friend for a long time and I am sure, it will be for your kid too !! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Baby-Friendly
Nice, sturdy books. Stories are concise for short attention spans. I can usually get through a whole book before my 4-month old gets antsy. She likes the pictures and turning the pages is easy for her since the books are so little.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Intro to George
I read these to my son since he was a baby and he loved them! These definitely interested him in the "real," full-length George books when he got older.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classics for the very young
These books were purchased for a one year old and are very sturdy and will last for a long time.My grandchild is too busy to sit still for more than a few pages at a time, but these books are small enough for him to hold and point to the pictures and enjoy on his own.We read to him by naming the pictures, but the reading experience can never begin too young. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars New Version is abridged
This is a great book BUT the current edition is badly edited from the original - I was very disappointed to find that the birds and the types of houses and many other pages are not in the new version. Anybody have an original copy they would like to sell?

I love reading this to my child as much as I loved having it read to me when I was a child. The book is joyous and lets you enjoy the fantasy of just how a birthday should be. Reading it on birthdays is a tradition in our house and helps us to relive the fantasy each year.

Editorial Review

He may be an old standby, but he never lets us down. When in doubt, turn to the story of the cat that transformed a dull, rainy afternoon into a magical and just-messy-enough adventure. There's another, hidden adventure, too: this book really will help children learn to read. With his simple and often single-vowel vocabulary, the good Doctor knew what he was doing: hear it, learn it, read it--laughing all the way. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Childhood Favorite! More than meets the eye!
The Cat in the Hat at first glance may seem like a nonsensical text meant merely to amuse its readers. If you stop and ponder this story of two children left at home alone one afternoon, you soon realize there is a more powerful message than first meets the eye. The children clearly know the difference between right and wrong, but with the slightest influence from the Cat, they easily give in. I believe the fish represents their conscience. They choose to ignore its warning time and again, and therefore, find themselves in a mountain of mess. Before the story's end, they are able to right the wrongs, but we as readers are left with this thought and question: "Then our mother came in and she said to us two, "Did you have any fun, tell me what did you do?" Should we tell her about it? Now what SHOULD we do? What would you do if your mother asked you?" (Seuss, 60-61).

At breakfast, The Man with the Yellow Hat tells George that he has a surprise planned and lots to do to get ready. "You can help me by staying out of trouble" says the man. George is happy to help, but you know how curious George can be...
5-0 out of 5 stars How can you go wrong with Curious George?
I bought this book to use as favors for my children's birthday party. The party was taking their cousins/friends to see the movie Curious George. It's a very cute book and Curious George's curiousity doesn't get him in too much trouble. It shows all the things that the man in the yellow hat does to prepare for a surprise party for George. It's great to see my children (3 and 5) enjoying book characters that I enjoyed as a child.

5-0 out of 5 stars A rich part of this bilingual Canadian's heritage
Among my very early memories is as one of several children sitting on the sloped lawn between two of my neighbour's houses, each of us reading a different story - and so, in no particular order - from "Les Aventures de Tintin." This was my introduction to the most extraordinary comics world ever created, a part of my French-language heritage, though the series has been translated into many languages including English. My goal with these reviews (one for each volume) is to explain to an American audience why Tintin is such a phenomenon in the rest of the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is fun for kids and great for a keepsake!
My husband had this book as a child in the late 70's, and my sister found the same book in the store and bought it for my oldest son about 5 years ago.It has been so fun for my son to fill out the book.We still have Daddy's book to look at from when he was little, so that is fun!I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting their child to have an enjoyable and interactive activity. It also serves as a wonderful keepsake for later on.They have fun things in it, such as "How many steps is it to the mailbox?" and "How many windows are in your house", as well as questions about what you want to do when you grow up and your interests.Love this book!

I had wonderful memories of this book as a child and wanted to bestow the same on my three year old. We've have great fun counting spoons, talking about our favorite animals, and getting quirky autographs (i.e., a man over 6'3"). A classic. Great family time too.

Editorial Review

Poor Horton. Dr. Seuss's kindly elephant is persuaded to sit on an egg while its mother, the good-for-nothing bird lazy Maysie, takes a break. Little does Horton know that Maysie is setting off for a permanent vacation in Palm Springs. He waits, and waits, never leaving his precarious branch, even through a freezing winter and a spring that's punctuated by the insults of his friends. ("They taunted. They teased him. They yelled 'How Absurd! Old Horton the Elephant thinks he's a bird!'") Further indignities await, but Horton has the patience of Job--from whose story this one clearly derives--and he is rewarded in the end by the surprise birth of... an elephant-bird. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Horton is Always a Good Choice
I grew up listening to this book on a record. These days, rhymes, like Mother Goose, are not taught in school or pre school like they once were.I teach ELL but even English speakers are having more difficulty with hearing rhymes which has a direct correlation to their phonemic awarness development. This is one of the major components of pre-reading readiness.Horton also is a good example of empathy and we certainly could use more of this in our public schools among the students!

5-0 out of 5 stars HortonHatches The Egg
Hacton the Elephant and the egg and that lazy momma bird.Oh momma bird just waiting to tricksome animal into watching her egg .Then comes Mr,Elephant .Oh poor Mr.Elephant gets stuck sitting on a tree for months. This book is a real good book .I would give it a thumbs up.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best of the Seuss books in my opinion
Horton Hatches the egg was one of my favourite books when I was a child and it is lovely to be able to read it to my children and it has become one of their favourite too. I certainly prefer this one to many of the Seuss books available (I have never been a huge fan of Cat in the hat or Green Eggs and Ham) This one has a hugely appealing story.

5-0 out of 5 stars A staple for every home library
How wonderful it has been to get reintroduced to all of Potter's sweet characters. My mom had a small board book collection when I was growing up and I forgot all about these stories. There is just something so warm and relaxing about them.My four year old is loving them (they're a bit too long for my two year old's attention span and she usually wanders away after awhile). However you just can't go wrong with this book--it's a classic and definitely timeless. My only suggestion is that sometimes a "complete" edition is the cheaper route to go, but it does make for a heavy book for little ones to tote around or try to flip through. So if you are looking for something to be a more kid friendly you may want to purchase the individual stories separately.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great book out of a great series - a review by Eli (age 7)
This book is really out of this world.I have been hooked on the magic school bus series.I can't wait to read more books in the series. The inside the human body book is full with very interesting facts and I learned so much from reading it.Arnold doesn't know where the bus is and is trying to find it.He doesn't even know that it is actually inside him. Then Arnold sneezes and finds the bus right next to him.He doesn't understand how he didn't see it before.

5-0 out of 5 stars packed with information
Ms. Frizzle is taking her class on a memorable field trip through the human body in this entertaining book featuring the beloved eccentric teacher and her curious class. My only complaint is that the pages are so busy with information that it's impossible to sit and really read the whole book, but perhaps it's best to let a child's curiosity guide you through a number of readings rather than trying to get everything in at one sitting.Concepts are expressed clearly and with humor.Justly popular with young students.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best
This was my sons' favorite story book at age 3 or 4.The language is advanced, with much more challenging vocabulary than a modern book would use for preschoolers, but it wasn't a problem, so it must be a good thing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Stories that have aged well
Having been exposed to the contemporary "commercial" version of Thomas the Tank Engine in various forms I had low expectations for _The_Complete_Collection_. After reading all the stories over the past two months at bedtime I whole heartedly give this collection 5 stars. These are the original stories by Rev. W. Awdry--not just Thomas stories, but other trains that have been forgotten by the marketplace. The language is the Queen's English and the terminology harks back to a different place and time. Fortunately the stories are robust enough to hold up without translation for my 3-year old.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Thomas Book
I got this book a long time ago and I must say, this book is a must have for anyone even remotely interested at all in Thomas.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic!
Being a teacher, I have read this personal favorite story many times to my class, and have enjoyed the cartoom on TV.I've always wanted to own a copy of it and the book to compare/contrast.Well, this year I saw the movie with Jim Carey and comparing it to the classic video, I felt Seuss must be turning over in his grave! It cannot compare to the wonderful cartoon that captures the whimsical drawings and fabulous rhythm of Seuss' words. This year my students did compare/contrast the book and video cartoon, and really learned much from it.Seuss always has a great message, and this one about giving and materialism is right up there!

5-0 out of 5 stars WHO'd a thunk it?
It is hard to imagine a Christmas without the Grinch.WHO would have believed that an ugly green creature with a heart that is too small could capture the genuine heart of Christmas?A trip to WHOVILLe is a mandatory part of the seasonal celebrations.God bless us, everyone, and especially Dr. Seuss

5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest children's book
In my opinion this is one of the greatest children's books ever written.

1-0 out of 5 stars Board book is far off from description Amazon uses (hardcover)
I remember liking this book as a child and I thought I could get this book for my daughter. The board book has been so abridged that it lacks a lot of things that I thought were funny.AND what about that "climatic ending" where the apples all topple - Not there! I wouldn't even recognize the wording in the board book as Dr. Suess's.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a great fan of this one, just not really appealing
One of the books which I keep wondering why I don't really like it. But there are lots of small reasons, none of them major but they all add up.
5-0 out of 5 stars Generations of happiness.
I had the original Beginner book and I read it so much it fell apart and my girls read it only a few times. They loved it as much as I so, I had to replace it. Well worth it. My daughters insist on it every day. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars abridged -- in a bad way
As previously mentioned, this does NOT contain all the text or pictures of the original. In and of itself, this is understandable since the original story is long. But the abriged text in particular is really despicable -- it unnecessarily changes the wording; so random and infinitely inferior.
5-0 out of 5 stars Attention! Attention! Attention!

5-0 out of 5 stars A very helpful book, great for anyone playing the games!
This is a great book to use for anyone who knows all the pokemon or anyone like me who does not. I was looking for some to go along with my gameboy advance pokemon games and this book worked perfect! It tells when all the pokemon evolve, are they special moves they learn and HM and TM's they can use during the game. This book is a way better buy than the strategy guides it has a ton of info in it for anyone new to pokemon or a old fan! Contains a time line poster and info on overr 380 pokemon! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Seuss's The Foot Book
I ordered this rhyming book to read to my 11 month old. She likes to look at it by herself also and the pages are sturdy and colorful.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Foot Book by Dr. Suess
This book is one of a kind! It's colorful and creative! It goes to show that opposites do attract! I would recommend it for any young first beginners in reading!

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT the book you know and love!
This is a nice enough board book, but be advised that it is NOT the full version of Dr. Seuss' book! They've left out several (charming!) pages of text and illustrations for the Board Book...What a disappointment to loyal fans, and how unfair to the newest generation of fans-to-be. ... Read more
