Editorial Review

Oh, why won't Marvin K. Mooney just please go now? In this 1972 classic for "beginning beginners," Dr. Seuss devotes his rhymes to budging the reluctant young Marvin K.: "The time has come. The time is now.Just go. Go. GO! I don't care how." But despite his impatience, our narrator certainly isn't short of ideas on how Marvin could make an exit. "You can go on stilts. You can go by fish. You can go in a Crunk-Car if you wish." Seuss's ever wacky illustrations accompany each new mode of transport, from balloon to broomstick to Bumble-Boat. And if those who are just learning find a word they don't know, chances are Seuss has simply made it up to fill out this ear-pleasing, easy-to-read text. This book is yet another fun and euphonious entry from the good doctor, a silly primer for budding rhymers and readers. (Ages 4 to 8) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Popular wtih my under 5 year olds
I am not quite sure what is most appealing to my children, the rhymes or the ridiculously whimsical illustrations - they love the Zike-bike and the zumblezay the best. My 2 year old goes around singing the word 'Zumblezay'over and over so just the sound of it is obviously appealing.
5-0 out of 5 stars loved it and can't get enough
I remember being very young and asking my mother to read this to me over and over. She got so tired of reading it to me, but I have never tired of the book. I purchased it for my nephew and look forward to reading it to kids of my own some day soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my daycare kids favorite
I love to read my daycare kids books with rhythm and rhyme. This book is terrific and adorable and never seems to get old no matter how many times I read it. We giggle through the whole thing. FUN FUN read.

Editorial Review

Tintin begins his greatest adventure when he and Captain Haddock are rather cryptically summoned to join Professor Calculus in Klow.It turns out that the professor has joined a consortium in order to build a rocket that will land a person on the moon (this was in 1953, well before Neil Armstrong).Unfortunately, the project has attracted some unwanted attention from those who will resort to sabotage and skullduggery to steal the technology. Is the project successful?Well, it's probably not that great of a spoiler to reveal that the story is continued in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely stunning
The first Tintin book I ever owned, and along with the second part (Explorers on the moon) is still the one I love the best. A witty, clever tale with suprise twists and turns, great characters and all those fantastic drawings of the spacecraft itself. These two books played a huge part in starting my love affair with SF, and I'd even say they influenced my decision to write novels of my own (now happily published)
4-0 out of 5 stars Another good Tintin story.
A fun story. The science is a little shaky, but fun nonetheless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tintin and friends prepare to take a spaceship to the Moon
"Destination Moon"("Objectif Lune," 1953) gives a detailed account on the preparation and the launching of the expedition to the Moon from the Sprodj Atomic Research Center in Syldavaia using the rocket designed by Professor Calculus. However, be forewarned that this is the first half of the tale, which is continued in "Explorers on the Moon."So do not let the cliffhanger ending to this volume throw you for a loop.Just make a point of picking up both halves of the story and you can avoid any sleepless nights worrying about Tintin and his friends trapped in a spaceship that could well become their tomb.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Completly perfect
I picked up this book for some light lunch reading while I was at my job at a bookstore.I was devestated when I had to put it back and get back to work!At the end of the day when I thought about having to wait until I was at work again to finish, I bought this along with Dragon's Breath and Once Upon a Curse.I read them all in two days!
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for girls of all ages!
My daughter checked this book out at the library...I think she was attracted to the pink cover and little crown on the spine (looked like princess stuff to her). She is only 4, but she sits through chapter books with or without pictures, so I read it to her. I was very impressed by the unique and unpredictable situations. The story is perfect for girls around 9 - 13 who may be in an awkward stage in life.It gives strength to girls as Emma, the main character, over comes her fears, uses her intelligence, and learns a lot about herself during the fanciful adventure. It only took a week to read it to my daughter (record time for us) and what did my 4 year old say when we finished the last page?"Let's read it again!"And ya know what, I am enjoying it as much the second time around as I did the first!

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS AWESOME!!!
This book is soooooo cool! I didn't want it to end! I LOVE how Emma is a witch and a princess! Eadric is cool too. And Li'l! Can't forget about Li'l! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dinosaurs and the Magic School Bus
I bought this book for my son's 5th birthday. He loves the Magic School Bus series and he loves Dinosaurs. This was the perfect gift for him. We have read it a few times already. It does not read as smooth as the other books in the series, but it keeps his interest and makes him want to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not the biggest meat eater. From vincent
Acually the biggest carnivore was giganotosaurus(gig-a-no-toe-sau-rus)with runners up being carcharodontosaurus(car-car-o-don-to-sau-rus),spinosaurus (the star from Jurrasic Park III)Then Tyrannosaurus rex (t-rex).My personal favorites: Velociraptor(veh-loss-i-rap-tor, ceratosaurus (cer-at-o-sau-rus),oviraptor (o-vi-rap-tor),and ornitholestes (or-nith-o-les-tees).

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful educational book for a variety of ages!
I wasn't familiar with the Magic School Bus series until I visited my family this past weekend--my 3-year old niece absolutely loved this book!Unconventional teacher Mrs. Frizzle takes her students on an archeological dig, but she then decides to give them a real look at dinosaurs by loading them onto her magic school bus and traveling back in time. The main body of the story is only about 5 lines per page, making the book appropriate for reading to younger children, but there is also a wealth of additional information included in surrounding insets, making the book ideal for an older beginning reader as well (and fun for adults, too!).The pictures are extremely detailed and colorful, and the illustrated children portray a variety of ethnic appearances.Given my niece's reaction, I'd highly recommend this book for aged 2-3 and up. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not as Good as the Other George Stories
My son LOVES trains, and he also loved the Curious George movie. He has several of the books based on the Rey's style, and the PS2 Curious George game.
3-0 out of 5 stars Another take on George
Refusing to believe that love equals control or perhaps distracted by his companion Mrs. Needleman, the man with the yellow hat once again disappears as George wanders unsupervised. This time, in a train station mired in mid-century stasis, George rearranges the trainmaster's board in a misguided attempt to help. In the end, George discovers that what it takes to be forgiven is good intentions and the quick wits to save someone's life. Unlike Vipah Interactive's spanking clean take on George, Martha Weston's looser, darker illustrations harken back to the original's feeling of big city grit. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Air Today, Gone Tomorrow
Written in 1995, Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen's latest story begins where it ends - in Ms. Frizzle's classroom. And that's it.Nothing else happened. The Friz and her students simply went on a nice, leisurely field trip. They didn't end up miles beneath the earth's surface digging for rocks; nor did they travel to outer space to hitch a ride with a runaway comet; heck, they didn't even bother to travel backwards in time millions of years to observe ancient animal life.
5-0 out of 5 stars The magic school bus inside a hurricane
I liked this book because it is a good way of showing what a hurricane looks like, how they work, what i can/can not do. It talls you how they are formed and where you can go to be safe from a hurricane.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aw, heck. What's not to like?
For those familiar with the "Magic Schoolbus" series, Mrs. Frizzle's adventures with her class all have a similar plotline.Mrs. Frizzle explains some scientific topic, whether it's the solar system, the dinosaurs, etc. and then lures her children onto her special schoolbus for an adventure.During the adventure the only child that is regularly singled out as the perpetual schlamatzel is Arnold, a boy who doesn't care much for adventures, thank you.In the end, the class is safe and has learned quite a lot, despite themselves.Even Arnold. Then there is a "letters" section in the back where readers wishing to complain about scientific inaccuracies (in this case, how dangerous it would be to be caught in a hurricane) are one-upped by already existing letters. The particular plotline in this hurricane obsessed book was not too dissimilar from the others, and was a lot of fun.I used to read these books to kids that I babysat back in my high school years, and certain types of children love them. The pages are always busy with text, speech bubbles, experiments that kids can do at home, and various factoids sprinkled hither and yon.I do wonder how long these series will last before it is regarded as hopelessly dated by the young. Please note that the review previous to my own was last written in 1997.Currently the show is doing well as a tv series, voiced by Lily Tomlin.Just the same, it would be very difficult to read this book to a group of kids. The books are relatively small and crammed with so much extra text that children will want to handle them one on one, rather than with a large group. Each book would pair well with a companion non-fiction book on the same topic. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Illustrations-captures my daughters imagination
This book has beautiful illustrations that ask for long leisurely looks- perfect for a pre-reader looking for the story in the pictures. The story itself is well told and holds the attention of my 5 year old girl.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rapunzel: always a favorite!
This book captures my little ladies' hearts and imagination. Wonderful illustrations and beautiful use of the English language. We began using it to learn vocabulary when my daughter was 3 and she still loves this one at age 6! A delight for the whole family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning images
I'm amazed by Zelinsky's gift at art! The tower (that tall, slender thing doesn't look very believable to me) doesn't really impress me, but that's just a minor complaint that I have (aside from that Rapunzel and her prince could have gotten to know each other before the marriage).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great to read to my 7 month old
I was looking for books to engage my 7 month daughter. This book is fantastic as the full story is not in the book so she doesn't get bored easily.the pop ups are special treat for her although I have to keep them away from curious little hands. This book is a MUST buy for your infant

5-0 out of 5 stars The characters come alive!
A lively and interesting pop-up creation! I think the pop-ups are intricately designed and created to make the stories come alive and more enjoyable to read! An interactive way to read Dr. Seuss's remarkable writing. Unfortunately, the stories are not full versions. I wish they were. So, don't expect to find all the stories in one book with interesting pop-ups.

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing
I bought this for my 4 year old daughter who loves pop-up books. I thought it would be a good way to introduce her to Dr. Seuss. I was sad to realize that it didn't include the whole book and what is included is very hard to follow and read. It doesn't seem to flow from page to page. The pop-ups are great but do make it hard to read since some of the story is included on them. I'm not sure I would buy this knowing all of this. ... Read more

What can I say?Seuss is always great!

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Dr. Seuss book ever!
I can't believe this book is written by Dr. Seuss! It is so boring, dull, and has the weirdest ending ever.It teaches bad lessons to kids - all day long the kid refuses to get up and in the end his Mom looks at him sheepishly along with his two siblings while he smiles triumphantly in his bed."I guess he really means it,"says Mom.Huh? What kind of lesson is that? The poetry is not clever, fun or catchy like most of his other works. The illustrations are not done by Dr. Seuss and they are not very interesting or coloful.Very, very ho-hum!

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't woozy-snooze through this!
Have you ever had one of those mornings when you just can't get out of bed? This video might not help that, but it is very funny. In I Am NOT Getting Up Today a small boy almost begs his family and friends to just leave him alone so he can sleep. I think The Shape of Me and Other Stuff is educational, because it talks about shapes. Great Day for UP is very clever. I sometimes find myself jumping whenever the word "up" is metioned. In A People House is one of the more humorous stories. When a couple come home to see a bird and a mouse exploring their house they actually throw them out. It's very funny. So, don't get drowsy, buy this Begginer Book video. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars george is wonderful
George is good to read after an exasperating day with your toddler or preschooler. It reminds you that it could be worse, you could REALLY have a monkey to care for, and your monkeys don't really mean to get into mischief, they are just very very curiouus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just as good as the original stories
To date my daughter has been reading the "Curious George" books that belonged to my husband when he was a child. I was a little skeptical that the newly written stories would capture the same spirit as thosewritten more than 30 years ago. However, my daughter absolutely loved itespecially as both the storyline and the illustrations were more detailedthan usual and made it fun for her to point out different things and extendinto a discussion with us about beaches, lifesaving etc. Like her other"George" books she has reread this one over and over. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good read for me and my just-turned-3-year-old
This book has a cute, fun story with good illustrations like the other Scarry titles I've seen.I don't know how much my daughter is learning from it, except that Mr. Frumble is one unlucky guy.I haven't gotten tired of reading it, as happens sometimes, and that's as important as anything in the long run.It takes me 5-10 minutes to read, and I don't get into some of the outside-the-story details which I think would only distract my daughter from the story at this age.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good start
A few months ago I was visited by a particularly nasty strain of influenza. As I sat paralysed in an easy chair with everything that could possibly hurt hurting, I had to decide how to pass the time, since nobody in my family would agree to shoot me.I couldn't concentrate to read the tiny print in a book. The thought of television nauseated me.Only one thing would do.Tintin books!I used to collect and read Tintin books with my son about fifteen years ago, and hadn't read one in at least ten years. So I re-read them all, from Tintin In America to Tintin and the Picaros and they were wonderfully therapeutic.I then went on to order Tintin In the Land of the Soviets, Tintin In the Congo and Tintin and the Lake of Sharks. My interest in Tintin being re-awakened, I looked for commentary and analysis about Tintin and Herge, and came across Tintin, The Complete Companion.
5-0 out of 5 stars Only for the real Tintin fanatics
This book is an amazing source of information for the real Tintin fanatics. For those of us who love Tintin, but aren't really up there with the fanatic Tintin worshipers, it's a bit too much.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tintin shines !!!
The first Tintin book I read was in 1963 when I found a hardcover edition of 'Destination Moon' in our grade school library...I was 8 at the time and I found the book so interesting that it was hard to put down, you always want to know what happens next...I must have read this same book at least 10 times and always wondered "what happened when they got to the moon ??"...sadly this was the only copy of a Tintin book in our small library...Then in 1976 I happened in a small bookstore and just happened to ask if they had ever heard of Tintin (they hadn't) but they checked their catalouge for me and THERE IT WAS !!!...'Exploreers on the Moon'..for $1.98 !!!...and more Tintin books , I ordered it and others and have loved the books ever since...Both my kids have read them and my brothers too...OK...I saw this book on Amazon and of course had to have it and it is well worth the money with interesting facts, trivia and more Tintin stuff that I never knew....very well written and researched, with great art and photos...If you like Tintin , you will love this...and it is in hardcover too...I wish I had the 'Detination Moon' hardcover copy from my youth... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
This story is one of the Cinderella tales however this one is from Mexico.A young girl goes and cooks for the governor, and the governor is amazed by the taste of the meals that this girl can cook. However Domitila's mother dies and she must return home. The prince wanting to taste the wonderful food again goes out and searches for the woman who can cook a feast out of weeds.Although the governor faces some hardships and dishonest people in the end finds Domitila and marries her. This is a wonderful take off of the classic Cinderella story.I like it because it has Mexican traditions in it and the illustrations are wonderful. This book would be great to use as an introduction to different cultures. If I were to use this in my classroom I would try to get other countries versions of Cinderella so that they children could see even more differences and similarities in the stories.

4-0 out of 5 stars Now including culture, morals, and interest for boys
The story of a Mexican Cinderella character, this book is beautifully done with warmly coloured oil on canvas paintings that poignantly draw to mind the dry Mexican landscape. Most importantly, the illustrator has resisted the urge to create perfect characters, and instead presents a pleasant looking "Cinderella" with bland features and a square jaw, perhaps because the story is based on the family legend of the Rivero family of Hidalgo, Mexico. The author's text is mostly traditional for a fairy tale, but includes Spanish words with translations on the back page. The plot holds more interest than the traditional Cinderella tale, as the Prince is a Governor's son who begins the story haughty and spoiled, but while on a quest for the girl who makes delicious nopales (edible cactus, made by the common people), changes into a person of worth who can truly love a girl of the common people. This focus and character development of the often forgotten prince may make this tale more interesting to boys, as the male character is the hero on a quest, rather than the reward at the end of a girl's suffering.Furthermore, the tale is woven of realistic elements, rather than the fairy godmother, singing mice, and glass slipper of tradition, as it is explained why the father remarries, and includes a period of grief after the mother's death. However, beyond the plot and setting, the author waxes moralistic, presenting the likeable, yet lifeless Domitila as a goody-goody with a loving heart who follows her mother's instructions to "do every task with care, and always add a generous dash of love."Additionally, the text is framed in proverbs, presented both in English and Spanish, on the subjects of love and work, which add "atmosphere," but may get too sermonic to hold the attention of a child.Includes appealing history of the tale, as well as a recipe for Domitila's nopales on the last page.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful, superbly illustrated picturebook tale.
Jewell Reinhart Coburn's Domitila provides a Mexican Cinderella story as it tells of a talented cook and artist who becomes the Governor's bride. A beautiful account. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Spanish Speakers Delight
My husband and I are both fluent in Spanish and we love this book for our two year old son. I speak only Spanish to him, hubby speaks to him in both English and Spanish. We are always looking for good books in Spanish.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great to add to any Spanish Library
If you'd like to teach your child Spanish, reading meaningful books is a great way to do it. As other reviewers have noted, this story is easy enough to give hints for vocabulary memorization - and the child will retain the story as well as the words. If you're worried about pronunciation, you can get something with a CD like Flip Flop Spanish to help you and your child gain more confidence as well as to be able to talk ABOUT the story in Spanish.
5-0 out of 5 stars teaching my granddaughter Spanish :)
I bought this for my three-year-old granddaughter at Christmas. She loves it and has developed a pretty good accent (as good as mine, anyhow :) She knows what a bolsa is, and a monito and of course a sombrero amarillo. She has it firmly in mind that balloon = globo, so the globe of the world is like a balloon. Red is rojo and blue is azul.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Car Trip with Kids
This was wonderful for our vacation travel, and really helped keep the peace. With three kids who are almost always bored and rambunctious in the car, this was a travel lifesaver. They love the classics like myths, Shakespeare, and King Arthur. This story was not new to them, but they still listened attentively. We never heard a peep.Sean Bean's accent is lovely to listen to and added authenticity to the story. We are planning to buy more audio books for future trips.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully narrated and fairly complete introduction to Arthur
As others have mentioned, it's truly Sean Bean's narration that sets this recording apart. He does a fabulous job making the story come alive and, well, his voice is just utterly lovely as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable for those long car rides
My boys enjoyed this and listening to Sean Bean's voice lent a nice touch to it. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Maisy the mouse and her friends Cyril, Charley, and Tallulah have a busyday of gardening, painting pictures, cleaning the playroom, and romping at theplayground. Young readers can lift the flaps--all 36 of 'em--to learn aboutnumbers, colors, shapes, and opposites as the pals go about their day. Whatobjects in the playroom match the shapes on the flaps? What color completes thepictures of carrots, whales, and grasshoppers? The oh-so-cute Maisy is a hugefavorite with children, who watch her on TV and read about her in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for any Maisy fan.
My daughter can't get enough of this book. She could sit in front of it all day long, opening all the flaps and staring at all the details in the pictures. She is on a real Maisy kick, so I knew she would love it, but I had no idea how much.Three months after I first got it for her (she is 21 months now), I still know that it will hold her attention when I pull it out. That's a valuable tool for the mother of an active toddler!

5-0 out of 5 stars Maisy + Flaps = Winner!!!
My 2 year old loves Maisy!I got this book for him a year ago, and it is still a favorite. He has been able to tear some of the flaps off, like most of his flap books.Nonetheless we love the large size, bold colors, lots of flaps, simple images - a great buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR KIDS WHO LOVE THE FLAP BOOKS!

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy and interesting way to improve vocabulary
This book adds enjoyment to the desire of every one to have good vocabulary strength. More we proceed with story more words we add to our word pool.
4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful but requires some discipline
I got this book to see if my 9-year-old could use it but as it turned out, the book is more suitable for me than it is for her.It is a great way to build one's vocabulary (I am learning quite a few new words myself) but it does take some discipline, and is certainly a bit too advanced for my daughter. If Mark Philips could also include the pronunciation in the footnotes, that would be even better.
3-0 out of 5 stars Full of difficult words
This book has good words for first 100 pages, then later this book becomes tedious to read. Because each sentence has three to four tough words. This book is for people who have good command over English language. Also the words used in this book are hardly used in everyday english. Don't waste your money. ... Read more
