we read these books together... the word aquisition skill opportunities are wonderful..share and enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Original Richard Scarry you loved as a kid
This edition preserves the original Richard Scarry artwork and text from the 1970's that I grew up with (and loved) as a kid. Some of the new (1990 and on) editions of Scarry stories have art that is slightly "off" from Scarry's style, and text that does not convey Scarry's wit and fun storytelling style.Rest assured that this edition has both of those!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good short stories, but has nothing to do with bedtime.
This book is a nice collection of short stories, but none of the stories have a thing to do with falling asleep. Buy this book because you want more of Richard Scarry's wonderful stories, not because you want to soothe your child to sleep. I myself feel let down because I thought I was buying stories to put my child to sleep to. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Herge did better later
As a child, I read all of the Tintin books in Swedish, except the first one "Tintin in the Soviets". As an adult living in the U.S., I am reading most of them again to my children, but this time in English. Herge's first three Tintin books are not as good as his later books, and this was his third book. "Tintin in Congo" is the only Tintin book that I have read that is worse than this one. "Tintin in America" portrays America with an old fashioned European prejudice that is unrealistic and unflattering. His portrayal of the Indians is borderline racist, and the plot is essentially "gangster tries to kill Tintin, Tintin miraculously escapes" repeated a couple of dozen times. In a sense Tintin is a super hero with "luck" as his super power, and this becomes tiresome. The plot is silly, and the book is certainly not a history lesson.
1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointment in America
While not all Tintin books are "great" - this one is at the bottom of the pile. The plot is non-existent and the violence was pointless.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tintin en Amerique
Tintin in America, the third volume in the Adventures of Tintin series, is the earliest Tintin story available from its American publisher, most likely due to the fact that its two predecessors (Tintin au pays de Soviets and Tintin au Congo) are widely considered to be just too politically incorrect. If you are a political correctitude sort of person, you will likely find Tintin in America to be lacking in that area as well, but it is important to remember that it is a story steeped in its time, and more importantly, fictional.

Editorial Review

As the introduction explains, the watercolor paintings that accompanythis special edition of the very first Curious George story made their way out of Paris on the back of Hans Rey's bicycle, as he and his wife, Margaret, narrowly escaped the German occupation. By way of Spain and Brazil, Rey and his work came to the United States, where cash-strapped children's publishers always required "color separation" art--i.e., a different drawing for each color. So Rey's watercolors were not used, and for subsequent books he never even did them; only now, for the first time, has that first set been used directly. Otherwise, it's the story you probably already know, though a bit more luxuriously produced, about how Curious George came to make life a lot more interesting for the Man in the Yellow Hat. Editorial Review

"I am Eloise/I am six." So begins the well-loved story of Eloise, the garrulous little girl who lives at New York's Plaza Hotel. Eyebrow raised defiantly, arm propped on one jutting hip, Eloise is a study in self-confidence. Eloise's personal mandate is "Getting bored is not allowed," so she fills her days to the brim with wild adventures and self-imposed responsibilities. An average Eloise afternoon includes braiding her pet turtle's ears, ordering "one roast-beef bone, one raisin and seven spoons" from room service, and devising innovative methods of torture for her guardians.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ooh I just love Eloise!
Awesome book!Totally loved it--my three year old finds her fascinating."Why does she want to pour a pitcher of water down the mail chute, mommy?"She's a naughty girl but such a wonderfully creative and self reliant one! I think she is a great role model for my little girls!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mother of Two
I would think someone who would be offended by the style in which "Eloise" is written would be "smart" enough to know that the expression is "for all intents and purposes" and not "intensive purposes."
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
Wehave one of the softcover books and enjoy it very much and so I thought I would by this for my 4-year-old (who actually acts like Eloise sometimes). BAD CHOICE! I read through it on my own before I read it to her and THANK GOODNESS! Eloise is a back-talking, foul-mouthed terror! I can see how some adults may enjoy this book - maybe they're living vicariously through her antics. But she is no example in this book for small children. I'll be more careful next time - there definitely are cute "Eloise" books out there but this one was dreadful. If you're a big fan, read it through completely first to see it it's a fit. I must say that I was horrified. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Seven Crystal Balls
The Seven Crystal Balls begins where its predecessor, Red Rackham's Treasure, left off, with Captain Haddock settling into his family estate, Marlinspike Hall, and enjoying his newfound lord-of-the-manor role perhaps just a tad too much. The mystery begins at a variety show which Tintin and the Captain attend that evening. One of the performers, a clairvoyante, is suddenly seized with a vision that an audience member's husband is in great danger.Shortly afterwards, it is announced that the woman's husband has indeed been taken seriously ill.
5-0 out of 5 stars A mysterious Incan curse (part 1 of 2)
Tintin and Captain Haddock go to a psychic show. There an Indian fakir puts his assistant into a trance. She forsees a mysterious illness striking a photographer on a recent expedition to recover Incan artifacts. One by one the researchers on the expedition fall into mysterious comas.Near each lies a shattered crystal ball...
5-0 out of 5 stars Tintin and friends begin to deal with an Incan mystery
First, be aware that the exciting Tintin adventure that begins in "The Seven Crystal Balls" is concluded in "Prisoners of the Sun."As our story begins, Tintin is on the train reading how the Sanders-Hardiman Ethnographic Expedition has returned a trip to Peru and Bolivia. The gentleman reading over Tintin's shoulder predicts trouble, drawing a parallel between what happened with the curse of King Tut-Ankh-Amen's tomb and these explorers violating the Inca's burial chambers."What'd we say if the Egyptians or the Peruvians came over here and started digging up our kings?," asks the gentleman; What'd we say then, eh?"The comment is important, not only because tragedy does strike the seven members of the expedition as they fall prey to the Crystal Balls of the book's title, but because one of the themes that Herg develops in this particular epic is the respect Europeans should have for other cultures and ways of life. This point has been implict in many of Tintin's adventures, but it is a dominant element this time around.Assissted by his good friend Captain Haddock, Tintin becomes embroiled in the mystery, which takes a more personal turn when Professor Calculus is kidnapped. One interesting twist in this story is that Snowy actually ends up causing more trouble than the Thom(p)sons. There is a seriousness to what happens in "The Seven Crytal Balls" and "Prisoners of the Sun" that reflects a significant turning point in Herg's work, laying the ground work for his greatest tales, the two-part Moon story and "Tintin in Tibet."The ability of Herg to grow as a storyteller over the course of his distinguished career is impressive and these stories deserve the accolades they have received and the affection with which they have been embraced by generations of readers. ... Editorial Review

This classic Seuss title stars a happy-looking quadruped from the shores of Lake Winna-Bango who has the most amazing antlers and the kindest disposition. Alas! Everyone, but everyone, takes advantage of his generosity, and before long he has three-quarters of the animal kingdom nesting in the convenient perches atop his head. ("They asked in a fox, who jumped in from the trees, / They asked in some mice and they asked in some fleas.") You might think someone would take pity, but nobody seems to like an oddball, and all Thidwick gets for his trouble is complaints and contempt. Unable to cross the lake when winter threatens, he looks all set to starve--and then things get even worse. He is saved from certain death just in time, swims the lake, and joins the herd again. One reason this Seuss is so good: it has a moral, but the moral isn't pressed too far and the exuberant linguistic fun isn't subservient to it. (Ages 4 to 8) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading
This book should be in every child's library (and most adults as well). This is the starter book for Orwell's Animal Farm.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIDWICK THE BIG-HEARTED MOOSE
By far, Dr. Suess' best.Too bad this book is not acknowledged and advertised as his other silly books are. By far the best for the simple moral message a child can understand for years.

5-0 out of 5 stars 39 years of loving this book!
I bought this book 39 years ago at a church sale when I was 6 years old--yes, I used my own money!I loved it then and I love it now.The illustrations are a hoot--seeing one critter after another move into poor Thidwick's horns has always made me laugh. And, I like to think of myself as a nice guy too and a moral fellow, just like poor Thidwick. So, the lesson of seeing people take advantage of one's good nature has served me as I've gone through life.In college I majored in Political Philosophy and I thought of this book then. The lesson for me was--Bad people will use your morality against you while themselves being unaccountable.Bad people will break the law all the time, but if a good person breaks the law...listen to them scream! And of course, poor Thidwick will do anything to keep from breaking the law (in this case the law of hospitality), even starve to death or be shot by trophy hunters, rather than eject his "guests."The law has been distorted and perverted in Thidwick's case. His immoral guests remind Thidwick that if he's to be a good host then Thidwick must cater to their needs. They don't / won't consider Thidwick's needs. The ungrateful guests seem offended that they might have some responsibility for Thidwick's suffering.Years later when I read a book by Ayn Rand, I thought of Thidwick during several passages. But this is most importantly a children's book that children love!My 4 year old son picks this book to have me read it to him regularly. If he didn't like it, what would it matter that his dad likes it so much! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A little disappointing
I bought this book for my 4-year-old son who loves pirates.Although the illustrations are beautiful and it is a cute story it just did not grab his attention. And he, uncharacteristically, was frightened by the fire-breathing dragon.I would recommend "How I Became a Pirate" (which has a better story line) over this book to any pirate-lovers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Tale of Peter Rabbit
The Tale of Peter Rabbit is a great little adventure book for children. It is wonderful because even without being able to read, a child can understand the story by looking through Potter's wonderfully illustrated Victorian Era Art. I would recommend this book to any teacher or parent. This should definitely be a book in your personal library.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Tale of Peter Rabbit
ISBN 1569870217 - I mention the ISBN so there's no confusion. With so many copies and retellings, Peter Rabbit is a tough review.Dissing Peter Rabbit is hard for me. I love the story, as I do most of the stories I grew up knowing even before I could read.Having read it recently, I'm not sure that it's the story I loved, or the fact that the big people in my world told it to me.

Amelia Bedelia, the extremely literal housekeeper who is adored by children all over the world turns 40 this year. Created in 1963 by Peggy Parish, Amelia Bedelia has amused and entertained children of all ages ever since. Amelia is a very literal housekeeper, and if not for her exceptional skill in the kitchen baking goodies, it is hard to think that she would be employed at all! Her literalness is the root of many adventures and the cause of great hi-jinx and amusement.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not You Standard Thanksgiving Faire- a review of "Arthur's Thanksgiving"
In this book, Arthur is chosen by Mr. Ratburn to be the director of the school's "Thanksgiving Day' play.As expected he is wined and dined for the primo parts by Francine, Buster and friends. The problems start however when it comes to filling the role of the chief bird.No one wants to wear that Turkey suit!
5-0 out of 5 stars Arthur's Thanksgiving
The book was a brilliant book. I like how Arthur was the director and Francine thought that she was going to direct. Arthur had trouble finding a turkey for the school play and how he had to try to bribe people. Everyone threatened to quit the play if he couldn't find a turkey. He even bought a real turkey. Then in the end, he decided to be the turkey himself.

5-0 out of 5 stars "It's a bore to stop being a millionaire."
Reader opinion is divided over the merits of Flight 714. Far and away the most modern of Belgian writer Herge's Tintin comic books, Flight 714 deals with industrial espionage, aliens, and a surprising amount of gunplay for a Tintin adventure. Some fans saw it as an unwelcome departure from the quaint European jet-setting of books past; more than that, however, the book shows that Herge understood that the world was changing. The Cold War had begun, and the people were unsafe in new and frightening ways. For all that bleakness, the book is more action-packed than many of the others, and it ends happily, as does every Tintin book. It's also the next-to-last book in the series, followed by Tintin and the Picaros.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Story Good quality and Fair cost of $8.99
This is one of best stories of tintin series. I love to read this. Cost wise also 8.99 is lowest on net.

5-0 out of 5 stars Flight 714: Non-stop entertaining adventure
Yet again, we get a glimpse of Herge's creative genius in this action-packed Tintin adventure. This Tintin adventure is unlike any other simply because it has hints of being based on some sort of a magical success-formula, not unlike one that would ensure a James Bond movie box-office hit!In sort, it features an eccentric millionaire, an airplane hijacking, a secret island base of Tintin's archrival- the evil Rastapopulous, the return of Captain Haddock's nemesis- Allan (from "The Crab with the Golden Claws", "The Red Sea Sharks"), and also the return of a friend-Skut (from "The Red Sea Sharks"), lot's of gunmen, volcano eruptions, and even a mysterious alien encounter. The plot is quite simple: Rastapopulous wishes to obtain millionaire Lazslo Carreidas's fortune by kidnapping him and getting him to, rather willing fully, reveal his wealth-related secrets- of course with the aid of a scientist's "truth formula" injection. However, getting Tintin, Captain Haddock, Snowy, and Professor Calculus into the picture changes the simplicity of the equation. The artwork, as is the case with the last Tintin book (Tintin and the Picaros), is simply outstanding among all Tintin books-which are already top quality in the first place! One scene I fondly remember is that of Allan catching sight of a monkey and then trying to recall who it reminds him of (based on the shape of its nose), and then realizing that it reminds him of none other than his boss-Rastapopulous.Herge's drawing of Allan's facial expressions(and even Rastapopulous's, as he seems to realize what's in Allan's mind) in this sequence, yet again, displays how effortlessly he could make his characters "talk" to the reader. It is peculiar to note how different this adventure is to its preceding one-The Castafiore Emerald, in which, our heroes don't even leave Marlinshire.Perhaps, Herge himself longed for Tintin to go on another exciting adventure.Definitely, one of the best Tintin stories, great for all ages and very entertaining!!! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Lies, No Guide Or Strategy Guide At All
The book don't help you at all beating the game is only a whole bunch of index card information, that only tells you, this pokemon has this power or you can do this with him, no a guide that show you the map of the game and any cheat codes. What a waste of money. I found Primagames Guide for Pokemon XD to be the Excellent choice the other one I resell it back.

4-0 out of 5 stars Seuss-isms
This book contains many great quotes from all sorts of Dr. Seuss books. Many of the entries in this book can be related to real life values.

5-0 out of 5 stars `A book of common sense from a man who wrote about non-sense.'
Dr. Seuss is unfortunately looked over by some people as just a guy who wrote silly little children's books. That may be partially true, but all of his books had a much deeper meaning if you are willing to be open-minded and take a closer look. His work is brilliant and outlandishly creative; so much so that he is recognized as the creator of the word `Nerd' in the English language when the word was first featured in his 1950 book `If I Ran the Zoo.' Some people believe that it is unfair to take quotes from his work after his death and related it to `lessons of life' the way this book does and that the quotes have no relation at all to what they are connected with. I don't believe that is true at all; I believe that he wrote these stories with the exact meaning they are realted too, which is why his books are brilliant. Here are two of my favorite quotes from the book so you can judge for yourself...
2-0 out of 5 stars This "Book" is about 50 cents worth of Dr. Seuss...
This is not a critique of Dr. Seuss, nor a bash of his works... BUT... REALLY...It's almost like the few pages of this tiny book get lost between the covers. You can read and digest what little has been printed in this book in less than 2 minutes(even if you're not the fastest reader!).Considering the wealth of writings of Dr. Seuss, please don't waste your time with this pitiful excuse for a publication.Just buy the books... you'll get a LOT more bang for your buck! ...
