5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
I found this book for my little girl, after discovering a Dinosaur and Shark book for my son. It is so beautiful I sat in awe for about 30 minutes looking at it when I first received it. It's not Disney's Cinderella, so don't look for any comparisons. Instead, it is a beautiful story full of imaginative pop-ups that allow little girls to pretend they are in the story as Cinderella herself. My little girl (2 years) just loves to sit with me and my husband and flip through the story. Even my 3 year old boy loves to look at it!

    5-0 out of 5 stars Cinderella:A Pop-Up Fairy Tale
A fabulous & fun pop up book with extra surprises on each page, in each corner.Bought as a gift for my niece (age 6) and she absolutely loved it!

    5-0 out of 5 stars More than a pop-up
This is an exquisitely done work of art, with pop-ups that rival origami.I purchased it for my four year old granddaughter' birthday, but found that even at that age, supervision when reading (and care turning pages) is advisable. It is a book to be kept for years and handed down for generations.A great find and well worth the investment. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended autobiography
Chinese Cinderella is a heart-wrenching and sorrowful tale of a young girl growing up in a classic Cinderella setting. Treated harshly by her step-mother and ignored by her father, Adeline's life seems doomed to perpetual sadness. Every time something arrives to lighten up her life, it is taken away from her. She has to deal with loneliness and despair, but throughout the story she never gives up hope, that someday, somehow, things will get better.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book I've Ever Read!!!
I first read this book when I was in the 3rd grade. It was a fantastic true story (I'm mostly all about fantasy) that I enjoyed reading. I have read that book at least once a year every year since it was published. Each time I'm drawn into her world and remember how blessed my life is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great memoir
Adeline theoretically should have everything she wants in life- her father is very wealthy, she is able to attend prestigious college schools and afford an education, and she is extremely intelligent, remaining at the top of her class through the years of her youth. While she presents the fa?ade of having a happy family life, however, she is the despised child of a large family. Her mother passed away as a result of her birth, causing her father and four older siblings to blame her for their mother's death, considering her unlucky and barely a member of the family. When Adeline's father remarries, life continues to deteriorate- she, as well as the rest of her siblings, are scorned by their step-mother, who favors her own two children highly.Adeline struggles first to find acceptance in her family, and later to at least escape her family by putting her brilliant mind to work, immersing herself in her schoolwork so she will one day be able to support herself and her aunt, who is her only faithful friend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use.
The scripts were fun to do for a drama class of 9- 12 year olds. Some were a little preachy about the point of the story, but the the kids laughed a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun remakes of classic tales
I actually got this book for my kids so that we could read them together at night. It turned out that this book is actually written for use in a classroom.(I didn't realize that it was by Scholastic when I bought it.)Fortunately I am just 2 classes away from being a teacher, so I can get some use out of it.This book would probably not be too useful for families--unless you are the Von Trapps and all the cousins are visiting.

I find Cinderella Outgrows the Glass Slipper a valuable resource for ideas for helping students read and write for a variety of purposes, one of which is for enjoyment!Teachers are always looking for practical and intriguing ways to teach writing and build students'motivation to write, so the creative ideas for addressing national language arts standards and teaching writing for a variety of purposes found in this book are treasures.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Children's Books Ever Made
On one level, it's a Cinderella story in a different setting. But it's more than that.On a little deeper level, it's a story about true beauty being inside, but it's more than that. The book seems to have so many layers of meaning depending on how you look at it, all in what seems at first like a simple picture book.Confidence, ties to the Earth, insight into others, and more.I've read this book to my sons and daughters more than any other, and never tire of it.I hope they don't either, and more, I hope they come to understand the richness of the kind of lives lived by the rough face girl, and her sister-in-law to be, and husband to be.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Rough-Faced Girl
This is a story about a girl who is not beautiful on her outside, but is beautiful on her inside. The story takes place on the shores of Lake Ontario. She and her hard-hearted sisters are three of many women who want to marry an invisible being. But only someone who can see him, can marry him. The lesson is on the importance of having a good heart more than beautiful clothes or looks. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Native American culture and people who need to learn the importance of having a good heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Magnificiant Story of an Indian Girl!
The Rough Face Girl is a beutiful book.It had alot of description and many morals hidden in the words of the book. The young girl was despised by everyone in her village but she always stayed true to herself and others and she ended up with the best person that every girl wanted to marry.I learned that true beauty comes from inside and if you are honest then good things will happen to you.I also learned to be yourself because sooner or later people will start to accept who you are.And I learned to remember that there is always room for improvment. So in conclusion, I feel that this story can be enjoyed by young and old people! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Completly perfect
I picked up this book for some light lunch reading while I was at my job at a bookstore.I was devestated when I had to put it back and get back to work!At the end of the day when I thought about having to wait until I was at work again to finish, I bought this along with Dragon's Breath and Once Upon a Curse.I read them all in two days!
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for girls of all ages!
My daughter checked this book out at the library...I think she was attracted to the pink cover and little crown on the spine (looked like princess stuff to her). She is only 4, but she sits through chapter books with or without pictures, so I read it to her. I was very impressed by the unique and unpredictable situations. The story is perfect for girls around 9 - 13 who may be in an awkward stage in life.It gives strength to girls as Emma, the main character, over comes her fears, uses her intelligence, and learns a lot about herself during the fanciful adventure. It only took a week to read it to my daughter (record time for us) and what did my 4 year old say when we finished the last page?"Let's read it again!"And ya know what, I am enjoying it as much the second time around as I did the first!

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS AWESOME!!!

This book has beautiful illustrations that ask for long leisurely looks- perfect for a pre-reader looking for the story in the pictures. The story itself is well told and holds the attention of my 5 year old girl.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rapunzel: always a favorite!
This book captures my little ladies' hearts and imagination. Wonderful illustrations and beautiful use of the English language. We began using it to learn vocabulary when my daughter was 3 and she still loves this one at age 6! A delight for the whole family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning images
I'm amazed by Zelinsky's gift at art! The tower (that tall, slender thing doesn't look very believable to me) doesn't really impress me, but that's just a minor complaint that I have (aside from that Rapunzel and her prince could have gotten to know each other before the marriage).

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
This story is one of the Cinderella tales however this one is from Mexico.A young girl goes and cooks for the governor, and the governor is amazed by the taste of the meals that this girl can cook. However Domitila's mother dies and she must return home. The prince wanting to taste the wonderful food again goes out and searches for the woman who can cook a feast out of weeds.Although the governor faces some hardships and dishonest people in the end finds Domitila and marries her. This is a wonderful take off of the classic Cinderella story.I like it because it has Mexican traditions in it and the illustrations are wonderful. This book would be great to use as an introduction to different cultures. If I were to use this in my classroom I would try to get other countries versions of Cinderella so that they children could see even more differences and similarities in the stories.

4-0 out of 5 stars Now including culture, morals, and interest for boys
The story of a Mexican Cinderella character, this book is beautifully done with warmly coloured oil on canvas paintings that poignantly draw to mind the dry Mexican landscape. Most importantly, the illustrator has resisted the urge to create perfect characters, and instead presents a pleasant looking "Cinderella" with bland features and a square jaw, perhaps because the story is based on the family legend of the Rivero family of Hidalgo, Mexico. The author's text is mostly traditional for a fairy tale, but includes Spanish words with translations on the back page. The plot holds more interest than the traditional Cinderella tale, as the Prince is a Governor's son who begins the story haughty and spoiled, but while on a quest for the girl who makes delicious nopales (edible cactus, made by the common people), changes into a person of worth who can truly love a girl of the common people. This focus and character development of the often forgotten prince may make this tale more interesting to boys, as the male character is the hero on a quest, rather than the reward at the end of a girl's suffering.Furthermore, the tale is woven of realistic elements, rather than the fairy godmother, singing mice, and glass slipper of tradition, as it is explained why the father remarries, and includes a period of grief after the mother's death. However, beyond the plot and setting, the author waxes moralistic, presenting the likeable, yet lifeless Domitila as a goody-goody with a loving heart who follows her mother's instructions to "do every task with care, and always add a generous dash of love."Additionally, the text is framed in proverbs, presented both in English and Spanish, on the subjects of love and work, which add "atmosphere," but may get too sermonic to hold the attention of a child.Includes appealing history of the tale, as well as a recipe for Domitila's nopales on the last page.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful, superbly illustrated picturebook tale.
Jewell Reinhart Coburn's Domitila provides a Mexican Cinderella story as it tells of a talented cook and artist who becomes the Governor's bride. A beautiful account. ... Read more

My 3.5 year old son is ready to give up nap, but I wasn't ready to give up my afternoon quiet time. This was the perfect solution. I put one of these CDs in and he lays down and listens. There is nice music throughout and the storytellers all have very pleasant voices. There are 2 CDs in this set, each with over an hour of storytelling. He likes them so much that he frequently gets up after the first CD is over and asks for the other one, so I get 2 hours of quiet and he gets the rest he still needs to get through his day. I will definitely be getting the other CDs in this series. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Kind of Hope We All Need to Remember
A beautiful picture book on the Hans Christian Anderson tale. The Ugly Duckling is one of the world's most passionate childrens' stories of becoming. A wonderful book to read to remind a child what's possible no matter what. It's always a good thing to know one really is a swan ...underneath it all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Honk!
"The Ugly Duckling" is one of those rare examples of the triumph of image over story.Anyone who's ever read, heard, or seen performed this story knows that there are elements to it that can make you feel a hair uncomfortable. After all, the moral of the tale is that it doesn't matter how awful your life has been just so long as you're beautiful and look like all the pretty people in the end.Even if we dislike what "The Ugly Duckling" is trying to say, though, it's hard not to be compelled by its striking images. The cygnet amongst the ducklings. The resentment directed at him by both the animal kingdom and humankind. And then, the slow realization that he is in fact the most beautiful creature in the entire world. If this story were a Grimm Brothers tale it would probably end with the duckling rubbing his newfound good looks in his siblings' faces.Fortunately, we're in Hans Christian Andersen territory here, and (more specifically) Jerry Pinkney territory as well.Mr. Pinkney has taken Andersen's original wordy version and pared it down to the point where contemporary children will understand and identify with it better. He's even changed the moral of the tale oh-so-slightly so that it's less lotsa-pain-equals-more-physical-beauty and more hard-work-will-lead-to-happiness-in-the-end.I'm not personally buying it, but that's the fault of Andersen. Not Pinkney.

    4-0 out of 5 stars A Semi-Gothic Fairy Tale
Cinderella Skeleton is a great and simple children's book with a setting like a Tim Burton film. Set in a graveyard, Cinderella Skeleton is the classic tale of Cinderella retold with an undead cast of characters. The story is full of wonderful and mildly creepy rhymes and great word choice. An example of the great word choice is, "Her build was long and lean and lank; her dankish hair hung down in hanks." The book offers lots of wonderful illustrations and plenty of interesting twists in the story. One such example is when Cinderella is running away from the prince and instead of her shoe falling off, her whole foot just snaps off. All of the illustrations are wonderful and wonderfully creepy, too. In closing any early or starting reader would love Cinderella Skeleton; it also makes a great book to read out loud to your kids or class, too!
5-0 out of 5 stars An entertaining book
Cinderella Skeleton is a great book, with an entertaining idea. It is the same Cinderella story except made into a Halloween style. I like the story of Cinderella Skeleton better than the original Cinderella because the idea of the story was different and more entertaining to me. What is really cool about this book is how the author uses sentence fluency to add rhythm and make every sentence rhyme. For example "Prince Charnel summoned one and all to his frightfully famous Halloween Ball." I think this book will interest anyone who likes different ideas and books that rhyme. I really enjoyed this book and so did my other classmates. I liked every aspect about it. I like the idea the wording and the voice the book had. What is different about this book is that it takes an original idea like Cinderella and turns into an interesting idea. This book has some unusual parts, for example instead of only her slipper falling her whole foot falls with it.Overall this was an entertaining book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures
The pictures in this book are very nice. My 5-year old loves to hear it as a story before going to sleep. The ending of the story is also suitable for this age, since Rumpelstiltskin ends up flying out the window, instead of something more tragic happening to him.

5-0 out of 5 stars fairy tale told true
This is a lovely version of the classic Rumpelstiltskin. I enjoyed reading it with my third graders. The illustrations are beautiful and spark the imagination. A good story demonstrates struggle and challenges the students to compare present day expectations with the past.

4-0 out of 5 stars A reverse story with a happily ever after ending.
Jon Scieszka, author, has a way of twisting a fairy tale around and truly making it his own.The frog prince is tired of being nagged by his princess about hopping around on furniture and having lily pads in his pocket, he just wants to be a frog again and live happily ever after. The frog prince sets off on an adventure and goes from witch to witch (witches from other fairy tales) begging for them to turn him into a frog again. He comes upon a witch who finally tries but fails, turning him into a frog carriage. At the stroke of midnight the frog prince changes back to a prince and runs home to kiss his beautiful priness who he loves so much (only because he thought he was going to live out the rest of his life as a carriage in the scary woods). He kisses her and....well, I don't want to give away the creative ending. The illustrations are a bit dark but creative and effective to the sadness in the beginning of the story and woods through-out the rest.

And they all lived happily ever after........or not. The frog prince continued happens after the marriage of the frog prince and the beautiful princess. However life in the kingdom is not so magical. They fight they bicker, he whines she nags and now the frog prince wants nothing more than to become a frog again. So he sets off through the forest to find the witch who can turn him back into a frog. He meets many interesting witches along the way and finally one who can make him a frog, but is that really what he wants? Or does he wish he was with the princess again?

This was the bestest book I have ever read!!! I didn't like the big bad ugly mean wolf though. He was evil!!! The ending was good though!

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't take the wrong path by Tamera Wright
I like this version of Little Red Riding Hood because no one gets killed in the end. This book takes place in the woods. Little Red Riding Hood was walking to her grandma's house and decided to take a different path. When she got to grandma's house, there was the wolf wearing grandma's nightgown, which had sheep print on it. The wolf locked grandma away in the closet in hopes of saving her for a late night snack. Luckily the wolf didn't eat or hurt anyone, he accidentally fell out of a window, tumbled down a hill and ran away. Afterwards Little Red unlocked the closet door and let grandmother out. They later had a picnic and lived happily ever after.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This book is one of Wegmans greatest books, with the use of the 20 x 24 camera he is able to achieve some of the most amazing outdoor photography. 2-0 out of 5 stars A Real Let-Down
As a fan of William Wegman's for years now I always enjoy his works on some level. Unfortunately, this is not one of his best attempts. The photographs are often repetitive andsometimes make it difficult to see the dogs. The pictures really don't work when the wolf is dressed asgrandmother. It is hard to understand how Little Red Riding Hood canexclaim how different the wolf's eyes and ears look when they look exactlylike her grandmother's. I also had some problems with the story, particularly the ending. The changes were disconcerting and I found theepilogue, in particular, a real let down. I think Wegman's version ofCinderella worked much better than this story did. ... Read more

What a great addition to our bookshelf! My 3 year old daughter loves the Little Mermaid video, but I try to limit her viewing time. This book is a top choice to fill in on those days we skip the videos.5-0 out of 5 stars true under the sea story
My kids love this story and so do I.It tells every important detail in a short description. Each page has beautiful pictures with only a few paragraphs so the kids get to turn the pages often. The language comes straight from the movie so that the story teller can use the character voices. This will become a favorite with your family too. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A captivating picture book story
Anklet For A Princess: A Cinderella Story From India is an fabulous adaptation of the East Indian story "Nagami" (Jewel of the Snake), a legend that in many ways resembles the classic fairy tale Cinderella. The young woman Cinduri is overburdened with work from her stepmother and stepsister, and receives barely enough to eat in return. But Godfather Snake learns of her troubles and helps her attend the village's annual Navaratri Festival dressed in the most beautiful golden-threaded sari and diamond anklets, and there she wins the heart of the Prince. A captivating picture book story commendably written by Lila Mehta, deftly adapted by Meredith Brucker, and wondrously illustrated in full color by Youshan Tang, Anklet For A Princess would make a welcome and popular addition to any school or community library picture book collection. ...
