1-0 out of 5 stars Not the book I needed
Read the fine print! In ISBN number I needed was the one that came up under Treehouse books, but being a first time buyer of online books I did not realize that what you need and what you will recieve from them could be two different things. Always read the comment box before you order, the book I recieved was the Texas teachers version of the book. I therefore had to return it and pay once again for shipping costs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting...
I was roommates with the author at the 2004 National bee, and while he was away getting interviewed, I managed to sneak a peek at his book. I was overwhelmed by the information presented in just the first few pages I read, and while I have yet to read the actual published work, I can definitely say that this book is an asset to any geography classroom or geobee contestant, and that the author deserved his win (well, maybe I deserved it more :-P).

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love Wojo!
This book really is great. If you are looking for a reference book for ANY type of social studies, geography, history, area studies or just any class at all, this should make your wish-list. It is laid out well in an appealing format, and the information is all there. The author compiled it to study for the National Geography Bee, and then went on to win both that competition and even the International Geography Competition. I know him personally, and he put a ton of work into this book. It truly shows, and this book is definitely worth waht is charged. This book is a must for schools, as it will help anyone to study anything at all pertaining to geography or world cultures. I enjoyed reading this book, and I wholeheartedly believe you will too.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!
This book is crazy awesome! It has all the information that one would ever need about geography.Everything from basic facts to unique details about an assortment of countries is neatly compiled into an easy to use guide.Anyone remotely intersted in geography should buy this book. Also anyone that needs to know anything about geopgraphy for a class or report should buy this book.It is worth much more than it costs! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Grammar Made Fun
After looking at dozens of grammar texts for my homeschooled girls (ages 10 and 12) I decided to check out "Painless Grammar."What a breath of fresh air! It's not only informative and well written, it's full of comical English errors. My girls love to use it and are learning more because it is written toward children making it more fun to learn.I highly recommend its use to everyone.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is the worst vocab. book ever!
I have used these books for about ohh... 4 years now, and since I have started using them my standerdized test scores have droped from just above avrage to well below avrage... I do not believe anyone should use them!

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring
This book is way to boring for the average child.Even though it may be a good source of new vocab it is the most boring and waste of time thing to do.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good books that are straightforward.
My high school used these books.I also found them tedious, but I was in high school and I found everything tedious. The practice of applying myself to something that was less entertaining than I wished was valuable and necessary.I would never have gotten very far in life, and would certainly never have been successful in college unless I learned the skills that these books emphasized: vocabulary, standardized testing skills, and practice concentrating and memorizing.Read more

Editorial Review

This encyclopedia can make anyone feel like a scientist! Not only does it have fascinating facts on everything from atoms to zephyrs, it also shows how scientists work--describing, measuring, and asking questions about the world. Filled with detailed, sharp illustrations and eye-catching photographs, this book could keep a curious kid (or adult!) occupied for weeks. The one- and two-page entries are thematically organized--much more useful than alphabetical entries for making connections and thinking about whole systems. Some of the best categories are "Reactions," "Materials," "Weather," "Space," and "How Living Things Work." But Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars DK Science Encyclopedia
This book is great. It gives many pictures and illustrations. It helped me immensely with my science class.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Fragility of Science
DK makes some of the world's best books for kids; that is indisputable. It's easy to nitpick, of course. The precision photography of the DK books, and the very attention to detail can render the technology information obsolete fairly rapidly. But for the here and now, DK books have no rival. However, they may well not last beyond the now. Here's my pet peeve with this particular book: It is so big and heavy, that if your kids love this book as much as mine do, the cover will quickly separate from the book, leaving the whole thing vulnerable to unravelling. We've lost our contents and index already, now we're losing our science history pages! I'm so sad about this! This book literally falls apart under its own weight, when handled by children. I will attempt a hold-together fix with some duct tape, but I'm not sure how long that will last. This book is such an incredible resource, and kids will spend hours reading it to themselves or dragging it over to you for an explanation of this or that, but its construction is not sufficiently strong for its weight and target age level. A tough paperback binding would have been a far better thing. Kids need strong, strong books. If you want to keep this book in spiffy condition, then by all means put it up on a shelf, defeat the purpose of buying it in the first place, and then your kids can sell it on e-bay in 50 years or so as an antique curiosity. If you're some hyper-organized size-5 perfect freak of nature, you can keep it on your special shelf of fragile books that you personally take down and read to your children for 25 minutes every day after Yoga, and then you can do the same for your grandchildren, if your kids ever let you see them. If you let this book just get enjoyed and learned from freely, you can expect that a: Your kids will love it and learn a lot, and b: The book won't last two years, unless you only have girls, who tend to be less destructive little beasts. I don't think girls will attempt to place this book as a bridge between couch and coffee table, then jump on it. Boys might. Punks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Home Should Have This Book
and I truly mean this. For adults, adolesents and kids as young as two years old, this is a great resource and highly enjoyable book for all ages. My 3 year old LOVES it, my 5 year old LOVES it, and when flipping through it with them together as a bedtime book, I almost always wind up reading and adding to my own knowledge-base myself. This is a book that you would expect to retail for $50 and at this Amazon price, it is a real deal. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Educational, creative book that teaches Adjectives.
Nice, bright, creative illustrations. Great book to base an adjective lesson on in elementary school. The book explains all types of adjectives: proper, demonstrative, predicate, possessives, articles, superlatives. Also helpful for parents who want to help their kids who are having trouble learning about adjectives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautfully illustrated and well-written
This is a book that teaches children about adjectives in the English language. It goes beyond the obvious in adjectives to cover the demonstrative and possessive adjectives in our language. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book on nature for all ages
Primarily bought as a gift for my 5 yr old nephew, I spent a considerable amount of time pouring over this book. A neat thing about this book is the wealth of information coupled with attractive, colorful pictures opening up the world of nature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rekindling Our Respect for Nature!
This book has succeeded in describing the great diversity of life on earth in such an interesting way with colorful photographs and new information that one can't help but stand in awe of our great planet. The chapters discuss : How living things work, ecology, classification, plants and animals. I was afraid that the animal section in this book would be a repetition ofDK's Animal Encyclopedia, but thankfully it wasn't, I found new information everytime. For those who are not familiar with DK's encyclopedias one should know that the superior photography and layout of these books really captivate children's attention and fascination with this world.

5-0 out of 5 stars love of nature grows the more we know
I am delighted with this encyclopedia which I ordered as a present for my six year old. This handsome book has beautiful pictures and lots of information covering many aspects of nature.Attractive and accessible, it provides great rewards for the young reader whose love and respect of nature will grow as their knowledge expands. I expect it to be used in greater depth as my daughter grows older. For now, she loves to open it up and see what she finds-and becomes engaged immediately.I highly recommend it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great 1st Dictionary - 1st-4th grades
My review is based on the 2003 version. This version must be vastly improved over earlier reviews, as earlier reviews said it had no pronunciation guide. This version is great! It has blue text for the word.Short, concise definitions and a pronunciation guide at the end.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well laid out. Good for the younger students.
There are many things I love about this dictionary. Number one is the way it is put together; easy to read text, plenty of eye-catching pictures and artwork, guidewords conspicuously typeset to make locating entries easier, homographs, inflected forms, and example sentences that show use in context. 5-0 out of 5 stars Kids Guide to Social Action
Barbara Lewis cares about kids! Her books highlight ways in which students can make a difference in the world.Students are taught to identify problems and seek creative solutions in order to improve their community. "Kids Guide to Social Action," as well as Barbara's other publications, promote character education and service learning by providing authentic examples and educatinal tools for both the teacher and student.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
I can't imagine a better way to help young people put their"if only's" into action. Kids can choose from small orlarger time involvements, but this book will help them not WASTE time as they begin helping others in their communities. Many specific ideas and even templates to help the first-time volunteer feel comfortable reaching out, giving, and maybe even changing the world a little.

3-0 out of 5 stars how kids can practice their idealism
This upbeat, engaging book tells young adults --say, 10 and up-- specific ways they can make a difference. Even those vaguely wanting to "do something" may get inspired by the book's stories of caring kids, their ideas, and what skills they developed to get results. My 12-year-oldglued herself to the book for several days, then organized a neighborhoodcampaign to help the homeless in our town. The book helped with ideas forletters, interviews, speeches, surveys, and many resources and contactinfo. Now I'm reading it! ... Read more

My child will be in 1st grade this year and this is our third set of reading books by Nora Gaydos. The size of the books is very kid-friendly and the amount on each page is just what the early reader can handle. He feels like he is making progress and it is not too hard so we don't encounter too much frustration which is common with his other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ease into reading the fun way!
I cannot say enough good things about the "Now I'm Reading" series by Nora Gaydos.Starting with the 2 level one books and going through to the level four pack you have 50 books that are just right for your beginning reader. Each book is 10 pages, meaning that your child has 500 pages of simple yet fun, attractive, entertaining, and educational learning at their fingertips. Each book focuses on a different sound, pattern, or skill and each level builds on the last. There is a lot of repetition of the words and sounds in the text which helps build word and sound recognition. My son learned to read with these books when he had just turned 4 and continues to love them now as he nears 5.They have given him a great base which he is easily applying to all kinds of other books. He loves these books because they are small, funny, easy to get through in one sitting, and enjoyable time after time.Sometimes he is distracted from the reading due to the very cute pictures, but one thing is certain, he will want to read them again and again.Love of reading and learning are definitely things that these books promote! What more could a parent want? ... 4-0 out of 5 stars wish it were larger!
My 3 year old loves the I Spy computer games so I got him this I spy book for letters (which he still needs help recognizing). It is a very cute book - several images for each letter and cleverly done.I just wish it were bigger so we can spend more time with it.Overall, a good buy in a small boardbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great ABC book!!
My sister in law, a Kindergarten teacher, highly recommended this book. She read it to her son all the time and she couldn't believe when he started to learn his letters. The rhyming is enjoyable to little ears and fun for parents to read, the colors are simple and bold and there is a lot of growth to this book. You can start my just reading, then naming objects as they get older.I always sing the alphabet song at the end where the entire alphabet is listed. Each letter is filled in with what it starts with. For example: dots in D, water in W, kites in K.I bought the numbers which is good too - but if you get one, the alphabet is the best!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots to look at!
I spy with my little eye, a wonderful book for toddlers!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book I've Read!!!
Nobody likes homework these days. I can say not even I do. Well the book I read was How to Do Your Homework Without Throwing Up by Trevor Romian. The book was all about homework obviously, it also explains why it's good for you, the purpose of homework, and why it helps us in school. It also explains to you the emotions and feelings you might get when you're doing your homework. People might get sad, confused, frustrated etc. Then you have to think they didn't come up with homework just to bug us.
5-0 out of 5 stars Quick, Funny & Helpful
This is a super quick read book, loads of laughs, and I think it really gives kids a different perspective on homework. The gist of the book is that you have to do the homework no matter what, so just do it.The book just says this in a funny way though.Great for my 4th grade son who hates homework.

5-0 out of 5 stars kids can do a lot when properly motivated
I like this book very much. It provides insights on how to make kids happy and productive in doing homework. Its humorous writing makes my daughter and me laugh! The ideas are simple and effective. Kids are motivated to do better when their homework is recognized widely.
