5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ!!!!
My art teacher at the University of North Texas, read this book to our class as closure before our final. That was the first time that I have heard about this book and the book made me realize that many students do get lost through the cracks. This book is good for anyone going into education.

5-0 out of 5 stars Through The Cracks
Through The Cracks is the most powerful book I have encountered in my 25 years in education. It is in storybook format but its greatest impact will be when this book is shared with educators, parents, and communities whodesire to see education become what it is meant to be - active, involved, exciting, and fun.I have read this book aloud to hundreds of educators incollege classrooms and workshop presentations. The response isoverwhelming every time. ... Little Jessica worries about everything: waking up in time for school, filling her dog's water dish, learning new steps in ballet, doing her spellinghomework (she's not even sure how to spell "worry"--"Wurry"? "Werry"? "Worry"?).But now her teacher, Mr. Martin, has given her something new to fret about: It'sFire Prevention Week, and her class has to present what they're learning to theentire school. 5-0 out of 5 stars A great birthday gift for 9+ year old boys
We checked this book out of the library for my son after reading about it on one of their "recommended reading" lists for boys. After watching my son walk around day after day with it, and seeing him fold down every other page in the book, I had to get him his own copy.I ordered two extras for gifts. The first one he gave was a huge hit - the boy's mom told me that her son was also enthralled with it.The third copy never even made it to a birthday party - a friend came over with her two sons (8 and 10) and they were having so much fun reading through the book that I had to give them the last copy.Soon I'll be ordering more to stock up for upcoming parties - this is a sure hit for boys.Just in time too - once they hit 9 or so, it's hard to figure out what to give as gifts since toys are beginning to lose their luster.

5-0 out of 5 stars Boy Stuff is Hot Stuff!
For a 10-year old boys, summer and boredom could be synonymous. Not with the Big Book of Boy Stuff! Our son saw a classmate's book, brought often to school for free reading time, and could not bear the brief bits of time he was allowed to read his friend's.He had to have his own, to bring home, to read outside, to read in bed. This book is chock full of fascinating facts and fun activities that a boy can do on his own.10 is an age when independence rocks! This book keeps the boy and his parents happy for many long hours. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
I have taught from this book in New Zealand and America. If your students are used to being spoon fed they may rebel at its complexity -- but if they are given proper guidance it will be useful first introduction and enduringly useful text for them.If you are graduating students with degrees in psychology and they cannot comprehend this book -- then their degree is not worth the paper it is printed on.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Student Reader
This text is much too complex for even an advanced undergraduate student. I found the chapters to be poorly organized, repetitious and over emphatical on small points, and vague on many important points. For a reader who has a good deal of previous exposure to behavior psychology, this may be a good text. For the majority of readers using this as a text to obtain an undergraduate degree without an emphisis on behavior, it is not. It seems to require quite a bit of previous exposure to behaviorist theories that most readers I have encountered do not have.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone serious about behavior.
This book is not for the faint of heart but is indispensable for anyone seriously into the field of behavior. In the animal training field it is one of the five top books that I and many other trainers recommend. Read more

Each researched word, printed in blue large bold print, is accompanied with the a description, printed in black, of the part(s) of speech the word can be used, several best choice synonyms, and a few lesser utilized synonyms. In addition, an example sentence incorporating the researched word is provided. Occassionally a list of antonyms is provided for the researched word. 5-0 out of 5 stars Transformed my classroom
I can't say enough about this book and how it changed the experience of the children in my classroom. As a volunteer teacher in a developing country, I had no experience and even less guidance when I began to teach elementary school last year.I brought many books on children's literacy with me and this is the *only* one I used.Patricia Cunningham knows how children learn and understands the basic tools that teachers must have if they are going to teach reading and writing.About 1/4 of my students were reading when I started the year, and by the end they could almost all form their own basic written sentences on paper and *all* of them could read very simple sentences.I would give this ten stars if I could.Buy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book with great ideas.
As a college student I am using this book for one of my classes.Being an "older" college student I remember the days of when Phonics was done out of a workbook.Sound out the letters, write the letters repeat. This book is full of ideas and games a teacher or parent can use to practice phonics with their kids in a way that is not so boring or mundane.Had my teachers had access to a book like this when I was in grade school my school career may have been a little better. This book has a lot to offer in what looks like a small amount of pages. It's easy to read, not your typical text book.I hate reading text books and this one was no problem for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I found this guide to be extremley helpful. It provides an overview of all the components of literacy for young children and gives a ton of great lesson ideas.I went to a workshop on literacy and everything the leaders were demonstrating came right out of this book.I recommended it to everyone there!I'll be teaching spec. ed 1st-3rd grade this year and I can adapt every activity to my classroom.I am very excited to implement Cunningham's ideas! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars YES, IT IS A BOOK OF LISTS
Since 1980, Rugg's college book has helped thousands of counselors, parents, and students narrow down the overwhelming number of college options for young people. The 100 plus lists are VERY substantive, and Rugg thins out the USA's undergraduate college departments to a top 12%. To state, as a reviewer from Northfield, Minnesota did recently (July 17, 2006) "that the book is basically about location, etc." misses 98% of the book. A five-minute read of the five-page introduction informs one of what is in the book: the "top" departments at America's top colleges. How sad to have missed all that.
3-0 out of 5 stars Be aware: It's a book of lists
I'm sure this book fills a useful niche, but I did not realize before purchasing it that there would be no discussion of the programs listed at the various colleges. It is a book of lists, pure and simple. A good jumping-off place, I'm sure, but it tells one nothing substantive (besides the basic info about location, etc.) about the schools and programs listed other than that they "made the list." It's a reference book to consult at the library or school counselor's office, not a book to invest in as a college-bound student or parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rugg's Recommendations on the Colleges - 23rd Edition
No pictures of students sitting on the grassy area in front of the ivy covered brick building.Plain and simple, who has the best major programs, period. Every colleges claims they have a fantastic math, art, etc... department.Rugg's is the book that gives you some idea of how good a certain major program is at a particular college. So if you are looking for a top physics program with a strong art program, you can find it. Ruggs is the go to book, it rates the major not the school's glossy brochure. Undecided? you can use Ruggs to find the schools that have strong programs in the 4 areas you are interested in so if your first major choice doesn't work out, you can change majors without having to change school. This book got us to our top 10 choices for schools based on area of interest. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Really Fun Math Adventure
Introducing Geometry has now been made more fun.Cindy Neuschwander has given upper grade teachers an exciting way to introduce a somewhat complex subject through the adventures of Radius, son of Sir Cumference and Lady Di of Ameter. This beautifully written and illustrated book has Radius out on an adventure with only a circular medallion (a protractor which is included with the book) to use to find his way through a maze of angles. Students will love the twists and turns the hero Radius encounters but solves and will be excited to learn how to use their own "circular medallion." I enjoyed this book and will be recommending it to appropriate teachers who I work with as a student teacher supervisor. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Practice helps, but...
This wasn't exactly what I had in mind. This book is strictly practice, it doesn't actually teach the child how to write cursive or show the formation at all.And it moves along very quickly, the entire alphabet is covered in four days' practice (half-page each day).Take a look at the Letter Formation Chart in the customer's images - it only shows what the completed letters look like, not how to form them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An effective reference for all teachers, kindergarten through high-school
Expertly authored by Michael F. Graves (Professor of Literacy Education and Guy Bond Fellow in Reading in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Minnesota), The Vocabulary Book: Learning And Instruction is an excellent instructional reference guide for classroom teachers wanting to provide their students with a more a expansive and proper understanding of English linguistics and proper manipulation of their given vocabulary. The Vocabulary Book presents the reader with an invaluable and highly recommended introduction effectively guiding their students through common problems and conundrums of the English language.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE VOCABULARY BOOK: A Much Needed Resource for Teachers, Researchers, and Literacy Policymakers
THE VOCABULARY BOOK provides readers with a fascinating and compelling case for effective vocabulary instruction in our schools based on theory, research, and best practice. In clear, engaging prose, Graves helps us to understand the thinking and research of some of the best minds in vocabulary research ranging from Terman, Thorndike, and Dale to Clifford, Carnine, Beck, McKeown, Anderson, Nagy, Hart and Risley; Carlo, August, and Snow; and his own research conducted over the past 30 years.Graves covers such topics as A Four-Part Vocabulary Program, Words and Word Learning, Providing Rich and Varied Language Experiences, Teaching Individual Words, Teaching Word-Learning Strategies, Promoting Word Consciousness, and, finally, Classroom Portraits of Effective Vocabulary Instruction. His astute understanding of effective instruction for all students in concert with his insightful unpacking of the best thinking and research in vocabulary make this book the best resource available for anyone who needs to better understand the critical importance of students' word knowledge in the acquisition of literacy in our schools and our diverse culture.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Vocabulary Book
This book pairs well with Isabel Beck's book,Bringing Words to Life. Graves covers many of the same topics in vocab.in a very similar fashion, even with some of the same terminology. This is a good additional resource for teachers and reading coaches to use as an aid in helping students. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Classrooms Across America
As an elementary principal, this book was loved by students and always checked out from the library. Trevor has a wonderful grasp on bullies and helps students in a sincere, motivating way. The dvd is super if you haven't checked into owning it. It's priced well and the animation/music is highly engaging. The material is solid and right-on with what I saw as an elementary principal and in dealing with bullying issues. If you are a teacher or can arrange author visits, go to trevorromain.com and look into a school/author visit. Trevor is inspirational for students, as well as adults, and will raise the bar for school-wide expectations with his "double-dog dare!" Trevor has visited our campus twice in two years and the students can't get enough!

5-0 out of 5 stars No need to feel Helpless
No child should feel helpless when it comes to the jungle of a playground. This book encourages dialogue and an internal sense of courage. The book is very kid-friendly.The language is perfect for those grade 3-6.The format and cartoon characters make the whole book and subject very approachable for kids. Whether bullied or not, this raises awareness to help all kids help themselves.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great in the Classroom!
This book has been a valuable part of my classroom read aloud program for 3 years now.It is valuable in that it really speaks to the students on their level. It is straight-forward about the problems and realities of bullies and teasing. This book often provided a great springboard into valuable classroom discussions.Students become empowered to stick up for themselves and to understand the thought process of a typical bully.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Form Over Content
A fellow teacher is doing a unit on African-American lit and the Civil Rights Movement as a lead-in to Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird"."A Wreath for Emmett Till" was one of the books she shared with the class.I have perused it myself, still unsure whether I should actually purchase it or not.Two things other reviewers have mentioned that I too find appealing about the book are:1)The sheer complexity of constructing a heroic crown of sonnets and 2)the historical backdrop of the events described.Unfortunately, these aspects have very little to do with the content of the poems themselves. Most of the information about Till is contained in the preface and afterword, not in the poems themselves.Likewise, others reviewers, like I, praise Nelson for giving a tour-de-force in making a heroic crown of sonnets (and her commentaries about the sonnets were enlightening), but to be honest, the poems themselves were not particularly outstanding.I would buy the book more as an example of the structure and form of poetry rather than as an example of good poetry (If that makes sense).

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Poem
This book is in the form of a Heroic Sonnet is a brilliantly written book. It is about giving a wreath to Emmett Till, a young child who was lynched after whistling at a white woman. Till, who normally lived in Chicago, was spending the time at his uncle for the summer. After whistling at a white woman, Briant, Milan and a third person kidnapped Emmett Till. Soon after the kidapping, they lynched him. Later in the Trial, Briant and Milan were found not guilty, though later, it was proven they were guilty. This book was brilliantly written into a heroic sonnet, each of the first lines stating: R.I.P. EMMETT L. TILL. It got me emotionally connected, displeased by the racism people had back then (i.e. allowing Briant and Millan the right to be not guilty just because Till was Black). This book was brilliantly written through the use of similies. It allowed you to invision the racism back then. The only comment I have against it is the World Trade Center reference, mentioning 9/11 hadn't happened yet. Other than that, A Wreath for Emmet Till by Marilyn Nelsen was an excellent work of poetry.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ambitious but highly disapointing
This ambitious poetry book is based on a little known poetic style known as a crown of sonnets, used historically to honor great kings. In this unique book, author Marilyn Nelson tries to apply it to an ordinary kid named Emmett Till whose name became household when he was brutally lynched, and outrage over his murder fueled the early flames of the black civil rights movement.
