YES, IT IS A BOOK OF LISTS
Since 1980, Rugg's college book has helped thousands of counselors, parents, and students narrow down the overwhelming number of college options for young people. The 100 plus lists are VERY substantive, and Rugg thins out the USA's undergraduate college departments to a top 12%. To state, as a reviewer from Northfield, Minnesota did recently (July 17, 2006) "that the book is basically about location, etc." misses 98% of the book. A five-minute read of the five-page introduction informs one of what is in the book: the "top" departments at America's top colleges. How sad to have missed all that.
Be aware: It's a book of lists
I'm sure this book fills a useful niche, but I did not realize before purchasing it that there would be no discussion of the programs listed at the various colleges. It is a book of lists, pure and simple. A good jumping-off place, I'm sure, but it tells one nothing substantive (besides the basic info about location, etc.) about the schools and programs listed other than that they "made the list." It's a reference book to consult at the library or school counselor's office, not a book to invest in as a college-bound student or parent.

Rugg's Recommendations on the Colleges - 23rd Edition
No pictures of students sitting on the grassy area in front of the ivy covered brick building.Plain and simple, who has the best major programs, period. Every colleges claims they have a fantastic math, art, etc... department.Rugg's is the book that gives you some idea of how good a certain major program is at a particular college. So if you are looking for a top physics program with a strong art program, you can find it. Ruggs is the go to book, it rates the major not the school's glossy brochure. Undecided? you can use Ruggs to find the schools that have strong programs in the 4 areas you are interested in so if your first major choice doesn't work out, you can change majors without having to change school. This one will keep your kids interested!
Great book!We had the 2006 edition for my 7-year-old son last year and he couldn't wait to get his hands on the new 2007.He takes it to school for free reading time and all of the kids love it.Even our friend's 12-year-old says it's very popular among that age group as well.It's great because it has something for everyone, is educational, and the sections can be read in short sittings.The cover is almost worn out because he takes it everywhere.We now give this book as gifts all the time! ... Fantastic book!
Alot of cool facts and real useful information in this colorful little book. My 10 year old read it himself and even my 17 year old learned some things she didn't know while babysitting one night. A great book to have in the home library. Excellent!

The World Almanac for Kids2006
It is a very impressive book, loaded with information, lots of colorful pictures, but ona child's level.Especially good for children that are always asking questions and want to know about everything.I got this for my 8 year old grandson for this coming Christmas.I am sure that he will enjoy it.

great teaching tool
We use these book as a part of our NFL Impact program run at USC's Joint Educational Project as part of our math component. It's a lot of stats and numbers and calculations that are relevant to the kids, so it's easier for them to stomach.

A Great Book
This is a great, imformative book of 337 pages. It has 11 maps and flags of all the nations in the world. It also has imformation about each one, including the following:

Who are these editors?How long have they been business?I'm a travel writer published in many publiscation and I never use this book for fact-finding for my articles.I think the internet is more reliable and accurate.With 1 travel book to my name, I have found everything for it on the internet.

All right for a textbook
The book isn't really all that interesting.Some of the good aspects are that the print is big, and it is easy reading.You can knock a chapter or two out of the way in an hour easily.

This book is should be an essential for anyone writing for children. Horning covers all the genres, offering insight into pacing, character and plot. She better defines what makes a picture book, an early reader, achapter book, a mid-grade and a young adult -- definitions that are oftenmurky in writing books. The book is incredible because the amazing graphics and really fun and outstanding records are so fun to read with your family. It helped us find out about the tallest ferris wheel which is in Texas. Fun book
I enjoy browsing through DAYS TO CELEBRATE. The book is divided into twelve "monthly" sections. Each month has a calendar full of facts both poetry and non-poetry related. Each month's flower, birth stone, and zodiac sign are given. Within each month's section there are four to seven poems related to that month in some way. (It might be a holiday of that month. Great Beach reading for kids and adults
Our copy of Time Almanac 2004 is already dog eared and full of sand.My nine-year-old daughter and I pass it back and forth to each other at the beach.It is a lively, colorful resource book that kids will immediately identify as "cool".It is also helpful for parents, both in reminding you of all those planet facts you have long forgotten and to keep a finger on the pulse of what kids should be knowing.I, also, found the homework skills and test-taking sections great for reminding me how to help my children address schoolwork...
