Just what we needed
As a homeschooling mom I was furstrated with the old edition we were trying to use. This one has been perfect though I know we will have to get a more advanced one as the kids get older.

If you teach children you must have this book!
This book is an amazing resource for children.My children literally fight over who gets to use the book next.I highly recommend it for any classroom grades 4-7.

No where near as good as the Dictionary!
Our family has greatly enjoyed the Scholastic Children's Dictionary, so it made sense to also get the Scholastic Children's Thesaurus.What a disappointment!Nearly every word my fourth grader looks up (for school work) is not in this book. It is pretty much useless for her school work.Don't bother with it!

Bought this based on a 5-star review? WHY??
My child is in 3rd grade and must look up synonyms.Very few of the words on her lists are in this book.This is not a helpful book at all.I guess I should buy an adult thesaurus for 3rd grade!

A Perfect Children's Thesaurus
The American Heritage Thesaurus is a must reference book for any home with children. Each researched word, printed in blue large bold print, is accompanied with the a description, printed in black, of the part(s) of speech the word can be used, several best choice synonyms, and a few lesser utilized synonyms. In addition, an example sentence incorporating the researched word is provided. Occassionally a list of antonyms is provided for the researched word. Researched words are easily located as a result of a large space between each word. Each two page spread usually contains one or two color photographs adding some visual appeal. In summary, this thesaurus is highly recommended and is an invaluable resource for any child of reading age.

Just what I needed
I could not expect anything more from a thesauras.This has all the words I, through my preteen years, have needed, without boggling my mind with lots of words that I never try to use.I don't feel overwhelmed, but I DO find the information I need.

I bought this for my 6 year old.She loves to read and really loves to write stories.She can use this book, but it will also grow with her.She should benefit from this one for several years.In the meantime, we have a lot of fun as she's learning "what another word for___?"

Terrific Introduction to a Thesaurus
I used this book with groups of English as a Second Language students in fifth and sixth grades. I thought it was a marvelous introduction to what a thesaurus is and how to use one. The book is only 86 pages long and uses easily readable print font, so it is not intimidating at all and really helps to promote confidence. My students loved it!

Did not assist in the task
I am a fifth grade teacher looking for a thesaurus for my students. I was extremely dissapointed in...this book. There were many words that were ommitted from the book which made it impossible for my students to find the synonyms to the words they were looking for. Short and Sweet, But not quite Perfect.
I was immeadiately drawn to this book's pleasing asthetic appeal. Tired of newsprint paged, miniature typed editions, the DK Concise Dictionary/Thesaurus was an attractive competitor. I brought this book as my first thesaurus and since then have found it helpful in writing letters and papers. Its a perfect hand-held size and the medium weight pages are also a nice quality. Perfect for school-aged children
I like this book because it is specfically made for school aged children.I am currently tutoring 11 and 13 year old boys, and I was previously using the more detailed Oxford Picture Dictionaries with them, but found this book today at my library.This is the only ESL picture dictionary I have found that specifically focuses on school subject matter.It contains illustrations of school aged children.However, I would like to see verbs commonly used, i.e, read, write, study, add, subtract, etc.

Very Simple and Very Effective
The content areas being social studies, history, science, and math.As with the Oxford Basic Picture Dictionary, the design is simple and uncluttered.On the left page are the words, accompanied by individual, small but colorful illustrations.On the right page is a large, full illustration containing all the illustrations from the left page.In other words, the right page is the left page in context.Rather like understanding where the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle go by looking at the box cover.A user friendly and effective strategy.
