Editorial Review

Among the greatest charms of children is their ability to view a simple activity as a magical adventure. Such as a walk in the woods late at night. Jane Yolen captures this wonderment in a book whose charm rises from its simplicity. "It was late one winter night, long past my bedtime, when Pa and I went owling." The two walked through the woods with nothing but hope and each other in a journey that will fascinate many a child. John Schoenherr's illustrations help bring richness to the countryside adventure. The book won the 1988 Caldecott Medal. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
My 4 1/2 year old grandson LOVES this book. His "usual choice" in books is one with LOTS of action. This book appeals to his love of family and animals. He now asks to go "owling" - and we plan to take him! There's a peaceful warmth in this story - a story that makes a child want to curl up in your lap and hear it "again".I highly recommended it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Owl Moon
A treasure for every child's library.A "warm hug" of a book sure to be read aloud many, many times and cherished as your child grows.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Book
This is one of the most beautiful books I've ever seen. The illustrations and the story complement each other perfectly. I got so lost in the pictures and the words that after closing the book I was momentarily confused by the sunny day outside.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent Companion to Dragonology
I originally bought this for my nephews, who have a fascination with dragons and such at the moment. It's definitely a result of the Harry Potter phenomenon, but the similarity ends at its "magical" quality. Its intent is the opening of minds to the hidden worlds of the imagination, and a rekindling of young peoples' interests in areas of mythology and classic literature. Supposedly the work of the last dragonmaster, the book aims to dispel the myths on dragons, recalling Hagrid's comments that they are "very misunderstood creatures". While Dragonology has lots of bells and whistles and moving parts, this is, as it says, more a handbook, and not as fun as its predecessor. It is great for stimulating the imagination of children (of all ages, apparently), but it's a slightly more involved text than Dragonology, and therefore likely to appeal to children 10+. It's artwork and some of its content appears based on The Flight of Dragons, by Peter Dickinson, upon which Discovery's Dragon's World DVD was also based. Both of these are great additions to this book, if you can get them.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Companion to "Dragonology"
I love this book! I think it might even be more fun than "Dragonology"! The illustrations are still excellent and all the dragon lore is there, but this time, you get to apply your knowledge! The Dragonology Handbook teaches you how to be a Dragonologist through puzzles, dragon riddles, and learning how to write in Dragon runes. The book also has more information on the different dragon species and some other species that weren't described in "Dragonology". It also says where these dragons can be found and what they prey on.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good companion to Dragonology
This book is very clever. It expands on the topics covered in "Dragonology". There are items to pull out and there is another section on dragon writing to translate. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Engineering Documentation
I am a British Chartered Engineer working mainly in Blue Chip energy-related companies. I have just started using this book in my work and find it strongly re-enforces my passion for excellent documentation and design management. It is clearly the current 'bible' forEngineering Documentation Control and is extremely valuable in showing how to climb the 'Configuration Management Ladder' (page 8). It cuts away the dross and complexity that is plentiful nearly everywhere else. So many of us technologists and managers are struggling with hugely powerful new computer packages that integrate most processes in our companies. This is one of the very few books to chart our course and give us a chance of a reliable way through to simplicity, speed and profitability that are so often promissed but so rarely fully attained.
4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough Industry Configuration Management Resource...
...but not for Software CM.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Inroduction to CM
Unlike the vast majority of books available on configuration management, this book, as the title suggests, focuses entirely on configuration management in industry.Throughout the book, the author focuses on a simplified, fast configuration management system that exceeds DoD standards. This book, in the chapters titled Change Control and Fast Change, has an exceptional explanation of how to handle configuration modifications. In these chapters the author gives a detailed description of how to set up a system that allows the fastest possible changes to take place. Also, many case studies are given in these sections which provide further insight as to how to implement the correct system for a given situation.Overall, the book is very easy to understand, and serves as an excellent introduction and handbook to a configuration management system for industry. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Grinding, Not Critical Thinking
The entire Saxon math series is full of step by step instructions on how to solve problems.Whether you find this dull or not, the books do not offer the critical problem solving kids need to reach their full potential.
5-0 out of 5 stars the BEST of the Best math books around
The Saxon books are some of the best that I have ever used. I used Saxon books throughout all of my honors classes in highschool. Considering my scores on placement tests, I was place into Calculus III at the beginning of my freshman year at the University of Iowa. These books did wonders for me. The methods employed by Saxon books are sound. The books get students to examine all sorts of different ways to attempt problems. With the progressive method of learning, students learn the formulas, equations, and ideas by heart. Two thumbs way up for Saxon!

What an excellent book ! Full of up todate information (this is pre-Pluto's demotion), graphics and pictures. The book is divided up in to easy to read sections, not overly technical and covers everything from the history of astronomy, the solar system, deep space, NASA expeditions,a section on night sky charts and lots more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full fathom five thy father lies
I suppose that there must be some people in world for whom the name "David Wiesner" means nothing. I can't fathom what this kind of an existence must be like. I suppose it would be the literary equivalent of not knowing what chocolate was. Or snow. The minute the new Wiesner book comes out I, like hundreds of thousands of others like me, rush out to purchase it for friends, relatives, and passing acquaintances I met once in the grocery store. Little wonder that the man has won two Caldecott Medals AND two Caldecott Honors. Now one of those numbers is about to change since Wiesner has produced his most ambitious creation to date. Wordless (as always) and more intense than his light-hearted "Tuesday" and "Sector 7" ever were, this is a book overflowing in deep-water mysteries and delights.

I have this book in my preschool classroom, but it is not one that I read at storytime. We use it as a resource when one child begins to question how or why the leaves change color. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous introduction to "Birds and Bees"
I purchased this book after sitting cross-legged on the floor at a major bookstore with a whole slew of books on the subject.I picked this one for a number of reasons including the fact that it discusses different types of families -- this was a huge issue to me because my daughter was adopted as an "older child".
3-0 out of 5 stars A Book with an AGENDA
Well, it is an okay book, if you tear out pages 31 & 32 (which explain and illustrate homosexual relationships). These two pages are completely inappropriate and unnecessary. Also, be forewarned that on page 42, the writer states that abortion is just a "medical way to end a pregnancy".She makes it sound like a safe, natural and healthy alternative to family planning. It is so obvious that the writer is pushing her liberal "agenda" on our innocent children. What a shame. If you do not share her personal views, stay away from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE THE WORDS ...................
Oh My Gosh.I LOVE THIS BOOK.MY SON.........LOVES THIS BOOK.I thought it would be a good ice breaker to open communication about sex. Although I have started talking to him about sex, it was still an uncomfortable topic for the both of us.Trying to master the clinical side of things as well as the human /real side of things. Not giving too much at a time but trying to make sure he gets what he needs. It is a stressful balance.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's Perfectly Normal
Well what *IS* normal anyway? If normal to you is giving your child a book with lots of comic style nudity, directions for masterbating, exactly HOW to have sex (etc.) then you might want to grab this and run!If your child is average to above average intellectually he or she will have a full understanding of how to pleasure him or herself and how to perform the deed by the time they are finished.Of course there are warnings of pregancy, sickness (STD'S), and death (AIDS) if they are to do this while unprotected, so no worries there. You'd have to see the book to believe it.I was shocked when I started looking through it, and was doubling over with laughter that I had actually considered giving this to my 10 year old son.Actually, I did hand it to him in the car before I actually looked at it and he was shocked by the second page, gave it back and said "I think this is WAY too old for me Mama", and it turned out he was right!I'll never hand him something like that again without looking first.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not age appropriate.Shocking.
I purchased this for my 11 year old son.I am so thankful that I read this book before giving it to him or going straight to discussing it.The pictures are hand drawn but graphic.Far too much detail for the target audience. Kids need to know about sexuality but they don't need to know EVERYTHING before they are even teen-agers.I would be upset to find this in a school library. This book definitely needs to be used with supervision. I returned this book as I believe its content is inappropriate for the cover advertised age of 10 years old.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books on the Subject
This is one of the best books on the subject of sexuality for children. Presented in plain talk with nicely drawn illustrations, it's neither too graphic nor too cartoonish for the 10-12 year old set. It covers a lot of topics they need/want to know about, and it's handled very tactfully.

5-0 out of 5 stars Train Your Child To Be An Analytical Thinker (and Innoculate Him Against Math Phobia)....
After her math teacher "Mrs. Fibonacci" says that almost everything could be thought of as a math problem, the narrator enters a bizarre realm where "everything seems to be a problem," and it gets increasingly worse, as she becomes a "math zombie" before the brilliant (and for older folks, profound) conclusion. The math problems start out simple ("It takes me 10 minutes to get dressed...If my bus leaves at 8:00, will I make it on time?"), even English is a math problem ("If mail+box=mailbox... Does lipstick-stick=lip?)"Money, time, measurement, fractions, sequences, estimation, sets, logic and more are covered--there's even a quadratic formula and mention of Zeno! The brilliance of this book is that it anticipates and removes the obstacle of math phobia, specifically fear of word problems, that I saw more often than not back when I was a math teacher.Although the bookcover says "For ages > 6 and < 99,"and that is true because of the layers of relevance, I'd especially recommend it for early third grade, that way by the time the onslaught of word problems begins, word problems will seem more like word "puzzles" and fun.Great critical thinking tool, fun both in its story and visuals.

1-0 out of 5 stars Um...yeah
This book is really stupid and, honestly, if I had children, I would not ever put them down by giving them this book.Anyone who has a brain with a capacity higher than that of one with F.A.S. should be able to figure out the answes within two seconds or less and is a waste of money and time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Real-Life Math Book
This book is great for showing kids how math constantly appears in real life!

4-0 out of 5 stars A great resource
I remember that my grandma bought this book to give to my mom, so that she could share it with me.I developed pretty early, so my mom had already talked to me about my period before I read this book.I remember that she allowed me to read it myself and let me ask questions (I had lots).I also remember looking at the book with my cousin and laughing at the pictures of the developing male and female bodies. All in all, it's a great book that I'm glad is still in publication.I'd caution parents to give it to their children earlier than the age the book recommends. Both boys and girls are reaching puberty earlier these days and need to know about all of this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful in 1975, and still is
My parents read both this book and "Where did I come from?" to me when they were first published in the mid-seventies (I was born in 1970).I don't remember feeling awkward or embarrassed about the books.I was at an age where everything was pre-sexual.I had no social hang-ups about my body parts.I remember very clearly starting elementary school about this time and I was able to understand what all the innuendos were about. Yes, sexual innuendos by many other children that couldn't have been older than nine.I remember other kids laughing at the girl who really believed that children came from the cabbage patch!I remember one of my friends crying and running to her mother when she caught our friend Kenny using the toilet while standing up.She though he had a horrible tumor.
4-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book...
I think I'll make it a tradition in my family! My mom gave me this book when I was growing up, and I swear I read it cover to cover each day!! I bought this for my five year old, and wish I bought it when she was a little younger. Despite the simple story line, she still likes to look at it, and I hope it's a book that will help her on the way to reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything a new teacher needs to start off right
A professor recommended Van de Walle's books to me so I bought this one. This book explains how to teach math so that students build on existing knowledge, rather than learn sets of algorithms without understanding their meaning. It offers a range of specific lessons for all math topics for grades 5 - 8, it explains how to teach the same topics to diverse learners, how to teach to the standards. It comes with amazing templates that are downloadable. It shows you how to take advantage of your existing math textbook, supplementing it to make it more student-focused.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for middle school/junior high teachers
Van de Walle breaks down problem based classrooms in an understandable format. This book really helps teachers hone their skills in hands on/problem based teaching for mathematics. There are lots of activities to help you teach your students. This book is a must have for 5-8 Mathematics teachers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
My son is actually reading and enjoying the book. As a teenager he has many questions but he is hesitant to ask. This book came handy it covers wide range of subjects and answers questions in a direct way.

3-0 out of 5 stars Like a textbook
My 12 year old son keeps this book in a stack by his bed, but finds it too clinical--like a textbook. He likes "What's Going on On There" better because it's has a more humorous approach. As time goes on, however, he may appreciate the deeper lever of detail and information provided here.

5-0 out of 5 stars A helpful resource
While no book on this subject is going to cover everything exactly the way you might prefer, this book does a very good job of covering a variety of topics related to sexual development. The material is presented in an easy-to-read, factual manner. After reviewing the book myself, I gave it to my 12 year old son, who looked at me as if to say "I know this stuff already".Yet the next day, he thanked me for giving him the book and said it had cleared up some misunderstandings he had.We were then able to talk about some of his questions and impressions from the book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Real Math
Learning these methods of teaching math was what finally helped me to understand number. It connected my everyday knowledge with the book learning I had memorized, but not understood. No one should be a college graduate before they connect with numbers in a meaningful way. This is the way mathematically gifted children teach themselves. It is the way we should teach our children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do I Need the "Anniversary Edition?"
I ordered the "Anniversary Edition," not knowing what made it different, really. It comes with the original spiral bound Math Their Way text as well as another book of daily lessons and a workbook of masters to run off for graphing, charting and other activities. If you're going to jump in the program, you'll need those masters. The great thing about this curriculum is it tells you everything you need to know theoretically and in practice. It gives you ideas on how to inexpensively collect learning materials and use everyday objects in your lessons. It's a little pricey, so I hope you're able to buy it with school money!
