5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to get the dialogue going...
I checked out this book from our public library and read itfirst on my own.The format of the book is several short chapters filled with great information followed by questions submitted by girls, which then the author goes on to answer. The book is written in words that are easy for kids to understand and the illustrations are clever and funny. In the other reviews, I read about concerns with the subject of masturbation. That is found ONLY in a question in the Q & A section of Chapter 7.I personally did not feel comfortable with the topic at our age group so when I BOUGHT our own copy, I just tore page 79-80 out and by doing so I didn't disturb neither the end of Chapter 7 nor the beginning of Chapter 8.Overall, this is a great book to get the conversation started with my daughter (almost 10) that has just started taking the leap from little girl to young lady.I have three daughters and I will use this book with all three.Hope this helps...
5-0 out of 5 stars My 8 year old and I love this book
My 8 year old daughter met me at the door last nite and asked if we could read more from the book - I've been reading her one chapter a night. I love the way the topics are handled without being graphic. She asked if we could read two chapters tonite. I would recommend this to evey parent facing puberty with a young girl.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for your pre-teen girl
My 8 1/2 year old loved it.It was informative, amusing and easy to read.It was in no way intimidating for her.It covered subjects she is beginning to need to know about;hair growth, body odor, breast development, growth spurts, menustration etc.It was not too clinical and each chapter included questoins by children and answers. There is a strong emphasis on the fact that everyone grows in different ways and at different times and that your body will grow at the right rate for you.A lot on loving and respecting your body.Food disorders are discussed. There was not a clinical discussion on sex which I felt should be put off for a year or so anyway.A book I purchased at the same time "The period book" has more on that topic and peer issues.I'll give that to her at 10.

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!
When first reading this book, you may laugh or just be speechless--but I, personally, was in love with this book when I was about 3 or 4!!I don't know why, but this book really interested me.The delivery on this book was quite fast--quicker than I expected--I recommend this service and book to anyone and everyone!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Poo or cookie? You decide...
My almost 28 month old enjoys this book, and neither he nor I are bothered by the concerns others have voiced in their reviews.Rather than be put off by the "I, Joshua's mother," language, I find it amusing in a tongue-in-cheek sort of way.I suspect this was the author's intent, and it was made part of the story to give the mom or dad reader something to relate to and find amusing as they read the book to the child for the eighty-fifth time, not to voice a serious complaint to the one read to.As others have said, you can simply change the language as you're reading to whatever you choose to call bowel movements, urine or various parts of the male anatomy. My son gets that the large white thing is a potty even though it looks nothing like his, and personally I think that it only helps children to be exposed to expressionist art from an early age rather than dumbing everything down to photographs or representational drawings. However, there's a risk in choosing an expressionist venue for a how-to book aimed at 2 year olds.My son tends to interpret things somewhat literally and to be stubborn once he gets an idea in his head, and I expect others his age do as well. And he has a firmly implanted idea in his head about this book's illustrations. He thinks the poo looks like a cookie.
5-0 out of 5 stars It is fun, funny and tells it straight in kid terms
I think people saying this book could be damaging are going way too far and have lost all perspective. There is nothing wrong with it- the illustrations are cute, it is really matter of fact about how a child's body works and how potty training happens. It is also accepting of the normal mistakes along the way, no problem!

3-0 out of 5 stars Less than stellar
I was disappointed to find that there was no useful information contained therein. While the pictures were very well done there were no colloquial names to help identify species.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good supplemental book
I own about a dozen mushroom books and have recently added this one to my collection. "Shooming" can be a dangerous pursuit and, like almost all are aware, absolute identification is required. I don't think I would personally feel competent with this book alone, nor any other for that matter. I feel there are better books but these are very heavy monstrosities. This one, like a few, can be carried into the field while the larger, more definitive guides await at home, or in the car. The pictures are good but I prefer a "Peterson Guide" type approach to indicate what, exactly, I should be looking for. My only other personal objection is that I prefer a guide that uses their Latin name since this knowledge will be more easily transferable from one book to another.
1-0 out of 5 stars A poor choice
I purchased this book becase it said Audubon. Thus I expected much more than I received. I was hoping to identify a few mushrooms I had found in my area. After spending a great deal of time, I was able to identify none. There are far better pictures available in other books. For instance the picture of the Shaggy Mane does not look at all like the Shags I have collected and eaten. All in all, a waste of money. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Small hands will love these
These block books are the perfect size for small hands to grasp and enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!Great stacking & learning toy!
I bought this for my son who was 20 months old at the time.I thought it would be a great learning tool for my daughter (5) to show & 'teach' my son words as well as help her learn to read.So far it has proven to be a great toy for both of them & something that they can do together. But I was surprised that the real appeal to these books are that they are stackable. My son will spend hours stacking them & knocking them down & restacking but also he loves to bring them to me & ask me what the pictures are.I originally purchased it, thinking it was a great deal but then thinking that it would end up being one of those 'all over the house' toys...as it turns out, my son is crazy about keeping all the books together in the box so that hasn't been a big problem.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for Toddlers!
My 22 month-old son received this as a gift, and I've since given a set to two other toddlers. What a great box of books! The books are simple and straighforward, perfect for his budding vocabulary. He loves to pick them each up in turn, show me the few pages and identify each picture, and then drop the book (ker-plunk!) into the box. But the fun doesn't stop there - the books are also great for sorting into piles by color, and for using like blocks to build towers. They're sturdy and tough, able to withstand chewing, standing-upon, and bending backwards in my son's hands. Get a set! Get one now! :D ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book - No Question.
Let's just say that I've been out of school for a while now and Algebra has never been my strong suit. However, I use math all the time in my job so I thought I'd try to learn easier ways of doing things.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved me!!!!
I am a gifted facilitator but that doesn't mean I am an expert in every subject area! This book helped me understand the logic of Algebra for the first time in my life! It helped me understand Algebra in a way that I could explain to my students and that made sense! My students enjoyed the little stories that helped them remember the rules of Algebra! This book saved me! It was a breakthrough for me and I give it the highest rating. Anyone who is over their head in trying to teach Algebra will find it a lifesaver.

5-0 out of 5 stars Algebra tutorial
I would recommend this book to anyone having difficulty with algebra. My son had always done well in math, but had trouble understanding his Algebra I class and was failing the tests.I heard Mr. Zaccaro speak at a conference and bought this book.I used the book to tutor my son and his test grades went from 60s to 90s.He finished the year with a solid B average and is now one of the top students in Algebra II and easily maintains an A average. He is even able to help other students, because Mr. Zaccaro's book gave him such a good foundation in the subject. As a teacher, I think this book succeeds because it is not only informative, but it presents the lessons in an interesting, kid-friendly way.I think it's an excellent tool for remediation; however, I also think it would be great for any child interested in learning algebra just for fun, before it is taught in school. ... Every kid thinks about running away at one point or another; few get farther than the end of the block. Young Sam Gribley gets to the end of the block and keeps going--all the way to the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York. There he sets up house in a huge hollowed-out tree, with a falcon and a weasel for companions and his wits as his tool for survival. In a spellbinding, touching, funny account, Sam learns to live off the land, and grows up a little in the process. Blizzards, hunters, loneliness, and fear all battle to drive Sam back to city life. But his desire for freedom, independence, and adventure is stronger. No reader will be immune to the compulsion to go right out and start whittling fishhooks and befriending raccoons. Read more

I think this book was an ok book. Ithink this because i like the outdoors andi like camping. So if u dont realy like the outdoors than u might not like this book. Considering alost all of the book is based on the wilderness. The thing i didn't like about this book is that it dragged on and on.It got kind of boring. It also used big words and kept talking about the same thing. So thats what i thought about the book My side of the mountain.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of My Favorites!
I have read this book to hundreds of children and adults. I have shared it with my own kids and have read it to children in my first grade class as well as to children in the Storytimes that I have done at the library. I have also highlighted it when doing literature presentations for other teachers. The reaction is always the same. The audience is quiet at first and possibly thinking, "Hmmm. Not very interesting." But then as the tree begins her struggles (I like to think of her as a girl!) there is side-splitting laughter that increases as each page turns. As soon as the book is over a chorus of, "Read it again!" begins and of course, I do! This book is a gem and sharing it each year is one of my favorite things about fall!

5-0 out of 5 stars the Table where rich People sit
The Table Where Rich People Sit touched my heart. It made me realize that I have more riches than I knew. Simple riches like the colors of Autumn. Mountain Girl didn't understand about her riches either. But by the end of the story she knew that nature and family were the best kind of riches. Read this book so you can realize what your riches are, too.
5-0 out of 5 stars table where rich people sit
The young girl in this story doesn't notice that her family is rich. I think her family is rich because they get to sit under the stars so shiney at night and there is always a shining start of the day in the morning and they get to watch nature grow and on having a family right there for her. And that's how I think she is rich.
5-0 out of 5 stars table where rich people sit
I love this book.It was an amazing story. I liked how they called the girl Mountain Girl. But the one thing that I didn't understand is how the parents thought they were rich. But then at the end of the story I understood. It was nature that made them rich. It was priceless...and that made them all special people sitting at their table.

5-0 out of 5 stars Science Made Fun & Easy
I have a 6-yr old boy and a 7-yr old girl. It's very rare to find anything that they agree on but with What Is the World Made Of? I was able to find a book that both of them would enjoy and learn from at the same time. The easy-to-follow language made it easy for them both to follow along. The fun pictures and odd bits of humor kept them interested and wanting to know more. A fantastic find & one I hope to be able to use for quite some time.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible
I'm a high school Biology student, and this is the textbook our teacher's using. This book is terrible due to the fact that it expects you to blatantly memorize all of the material in it; I mean, the content is presented in the most terrible way possible, making it utterly useless for you to understand what you're reading before you memorize it. In the Chemistry chapters, I reverted to referring to an IGCSE textbook because of how bad the explanations were.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent --I mean outstanding in every way.
I have two unrelated degrees, and had only high school biology.I use this book for self-study.It is perfect. Its long list of reviewers gave me confidence in its lessons.
3-0 out of 5 stars Learned A lot--But Hated Learning
This book really goes in depth in information on all aspects of Biology. However, as a student, I have found that it is extremely difficult to learn from without the direct aid from a biologist or teacher. The vocabulary is over extravagent for a teaching book, and the section review questions badly organized and tiresome. The pictures and diagrams did help me to learn a lot however, because it combined visual along with analytic learning. Overall, I have learned a lot, but had a hard time learning it. And I may well forget this within a few weeks. ... Read more

Editorial Review

One couldn't select a more delightful and exciting premise for a children's book than the tale of a young boy lying awake on Christmas Eve only to have Santa Claus sweep by and take him on a trip with other children to the North Pole. And one couldn't ask for a more talented artist and writer to tell the story than Chris Van Allsburg. Allsburg, a sculptor who entered the genre nonchalantly when he created a children's book as a diversion from his sculpting, won the 1986 Caldecott Medal for this book, one of several award winners he's produced. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I thought this book was great - it was really colorful. The overall feel reminded me of the book "Now I Know the Ten Commandments". I recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars I like this book...and I think you will too!
This book is about a little boy who finds a train in front of his house. He has a chance to go on a great journey...does he get on the train? I think you will like this book. This book makes me feel happy. Your kids might like it too!

4-0 out of 5 stars S, Bartkus Review
This beautifully written 1986 Caldecott Award winning book captivates readers young and old to love this Christmas classic. The story is told from a young boy's point of view of waiting for Santa to arrive on Christmas Eve, only to find a train waiting outside his bedroom window ready to go to the North Pole.Van Allsburg immediately draws the reader into the story by capturing the young boy leaning outside his window leading the reader to turn the page and see what the boy sees. The storyline follows the journey of a boy on the Polar Express train to see Santa in the North Pole and receive the first gift of Christmas. It teaches a strong lesson for those who believe and is appropriate for children while bringing back the warm eager memories of waiting for Santa.Van Allsburg's award winning illustrations are so realistic and fill the pages to capture the emotions and spirit of the children. His use of shading to create shadows on each page capture the essence of the Christmas Eve night. The lights in the background seem to pop out in the background as if one turned on a light switch. The detailed realistic drawings capture the emotion of the young boy especially when he lost the bell that Santa had given him.We see him on the train and empathize with him along with the other children as if we were riding right there in the train with him.Although the illustrations gained the main recognition of the story, his use of rich descriptive language also strengthen the story.Van Allsburg's use of similes to compare, give vivid details and appeal to the senses of the reader. For example, one line describes the chocolate cocoa as " melted chocolate bars."The popularity of this book was made into a blockbuster movie and Van Allsburg's talent of lasting artisitic impression and rich language was not lost. This book will continue to touch readers of all ages and capture the warm spirit of Christmas. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Our sons answer
While looking to educate my adopted Chinese son ... only in this country for two years, I noticed his interest in life sciences and chemestry. So, we bought him his first Microscope for this Christmas and were trying to figure out how we can teach him the many things/uses we had forgotten in 42 years since my school days. Well ..... this book is the perfect answer. Not only does it explain the microscope, but it gives great experiments and things to build from household items as tools to carry my son further than I could. The writting will be a little dense per page for his understanding, but any good parent that will use this to help their child will be able to take that child to high knowledge and functionality in the microscope realm.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!
Santa brought our seven year old a nice microscope and a copy of this book.It is FULL of great ideas for experiments-including where and how to get samples. My husband and I found it fascinating, and we are all enjoying the new toy. I don't know how much use a microscope would get without a great book guiding you along.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Your Child is Hyperactive
It may have been written 25 years ago but my son was a totally different child within a week of following the Feingold Diet! It's been weeks now and even he is willing to follow the diet because he says he likes the way he feels. I am so glad I will not have to put my 5 year old child on drugs that will alter his personality. This is a must read for anyone looking for a way to fix the problem and the long term affects of hyperactivity. Doping your child may be the easy way out but doesn't address the cause. This may not help all cases but it's worth a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Feingold diet saved my child's life
Dr Feingold's theory is that bad behaviour and/or learning disabilities in otherwise bright children is caused by artifical colors and flavors. Although it may seem too simplistic, it is the answer IF you, as a parent, are willing to alter your lifestyle by reading ingredient labels and preparing food that is normal, natural and healthy. A child cannot do this on their own! But you will save your child's future and maybe your own sanity. A must buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars MIRACULOUS TOOL NEEDED BY PARENTS/GUARDIANS
Dr. Feingold's book saved my sanity in 1985 through this book!My daughter who was absolutely unable to follow directions, orlisten for more than one minute is just the beginning of descibing her challanging behavior before applying this book to her life! She was so hyperactive it meant a day of running around in circles, running up a wall, jumping off of furniture, absolutely "crazy" actions constantly. Our lives with her were sheer he--: trying to go out in public, attend religious events, visit friends/relatives, go to the park or groucery store meant an exhausting, unpleasant experience!I had taken her to a nutrionist, allergist, & psychiatrist to find an anwer and help.No specialist was able to help.I bought this book figuring that we were running out of hope; let's try it. I read this book and began following Dr. Feingold's methods exactly as he writes.Within four days my daughter's behavior changed into a normal functioning small child. My mother came to visit us on the fourth day of the Feingold Diet and was upset thinking that I had heavily medicated my daughter because her behavior was totally normal for a child her age!!!!!I explained what I did:exliminating all foods and starting fresh from scratch and slowly reintroducing foods. My daughter has NEVER been medicated for hyperactivity or any behavior disorder. We only fed her what was well tolerated.THIS BOOK IS A MIRACLE TO OUR LIVES!!!!!!!From 1985 to today has been a wonderful experience with my daughter!!!!!!She has been very successful in school (including college), sports, popular, and a pleasure to be around!!!!!This is the complete truth.I hope that other parents will take the time to get the book for the child who is "uncontrollabe, hyperactive, or unfocused" and follow it!The initial few weeks are difficult but it is worth every ounce of energy utilized!!!!!Please, for your sanity and your child's acceptance get and practice Dr. Feingold's methods to your child's life; it works!!!! ...
