2-0 out of 5 stars An overall Disappointment
This book was largely a disappointment. I had heard previously that this was the leading high school text that is used and had high expectations. I was disappointed to find a plethora of type errors (including math mistakes!) and also very poor descriptions of things like bonding theory, equilibrium constants, reaction ratesetc. The book covers a lot but fails to get real advanced in much of anything. I would reccomend for the advanced high school student a college level text with a good teacher instead of wasting your time on this.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not too good for self-study
I'm an 8th grader that wants to learn chemistry very badly, and bought this book.
1-0 out of 5 stars BIG FAT MISTAKE
I just found out from my VISA company that not only you credit my money back but you charged the money for the item that I returned. Another words you charged me twice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, clear chemistry book!
I'm currently a 10th grade high school student, and this book was great for me, simply great. Very clear, great diagrams, very helpful sample problems and reviews... it even has a laboratory safety manual, an a listing of the elements both on the table, and in alphabetical order! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Science Made Fun & Easy
I have a 6-yr old boy and a 7-yr old girl. It's very rare to find anything that they agree on but with What Is the World Made Of? I was able to find a book that both of them would enjoy and learn from at the same time. The easy-to-follow language made it easy for them both to follow along. The fun pictures and odd bits of humor kept them interested and wanting to know more. A fantastic find & one I hope to be able to use for quite some time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Teachers!!!
This book is an excellent way to introduce solids, liquids, and gases.I used it with a 3rd grade class and it was perfect!

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful science/literature connection
this is an excellent literature connection for young children studying the concept of matter.it works well with the foss science module, "solids and liquids" for students in grades one and two. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Only helpful in certain areas
I got a 3 on the exam with a teacher and a chem program at school which had never had anyone even attempt the AP test. However, this book alone will not get you a 2.This book is excellent when it comes to teaching you how to do the math but horrible when teaching you concepts. The princton review is excellent at teaching you concepts, but horrible at teaching you how to do the math.So my suggestion is you do them together and with your college Chem book.I pretty much taught myself everything and am proudly probably the first student at my school to pass the Chem AP test.I've also been told Barron's is quite good so you could try that as well.So only accompanying princton review could this book be helpful, labs don't really help much unless you actually do them.Don't be mistaken, this book won't tell you how to do the lab specifically, only skims through them.

2-0 out of 5 stars horrible resource
it has an awesome lab review section, but the review was nonexistant. I did not like how the book was put together or how it had a key terms section which did not explain the key terms. I am surprised that Cliffs would put out a book of this caliber. It's like the review was an afterthought compared to the lab section.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Option
Don't use this book. The lab guy gives the wrong impression.First off, the lab questions on the AP test are the ones you need to least worry about, usually very straighforward since you can't do a lab in a written test.In terms of the rest of the stuff in the Cliffs book, we used some of it in class and it the book is so riddled with mistakes that we stopped using it. USE PRINCETON REVIEW. Awesome book, straightforward, clear, won't put you to sleep. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible resource
I am using this book as a reference while homeschooling my middle-school son.It is far and away the best book of science experiments and demonstrations at this level that I have encountered.Every possible chemistry topic at the middle and high school level is covered with multiple examples, all well -indexed and clearly explained. Many can be done with simple materials around the house although some require more sophisticated glassware and a few involve chemicals and/or procedures that would require an institutional setting (for example, needing a fume hood). The latter are well indicated. Best of all, the activities are FUN--we did the Cartesian Diver today and it was a blast!
5-0 out of 5 stars Hands On Chemistry Activities

5-0 out of 5 stars A good resource book
This book has tons of labs and demonstrations. Many of the labs and demonstrations can be found in other chemistry texts and on-line, this book brings them all together with good explainations and illustrations.Herr and Cunningham have included additional information for the teacher and there are thoughtful extension questions provided for the students. This is a good resource book.I allow my students to try the labs after school and when they come in on their free periods. My only gripe is that it sometimes takes careful reading to follow the procedures as they are written in paragraph form. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My kids LOVE chemistry now!
Janice VanCleave's Chemistry For Every Kid is a must have book for upper elementary/middle school science teachers. The experiments are easy to set up and the kids LOVE them! Janice has tackled tough Chemistry concepts and come up with simple experiments that the kids ACTUALLY understand! I have used the activities in this book numerous times and couldn't recommend this book highly enough. The way I use the activities in this book, along with the others in the series, is set them up as stations and have the kids rotate through them. You will not be disappointed with this purchase and your kids will love you for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars simplistic
No handwriting required and no over-the-head scientific explanations. It is clear, simple, and EASY to pull off the shelf and use. I recommend previewing the list of materials for the week to be sure you have the needed items. Substitutions can effect the experiment. I use this with ages 4-10 and they ALL enjoy the experiments. The experiments are simplistic and easy for young children to grasp the idea yet have enough information to get the parents thought process going! A great introduction to chemistry that takes very little time to prep and do. I even use this book as birthday party entertainment! A favorite with us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Way cool Chemistry
Excellent presentation of High School and College Chemistry at the level elementary students can understand.
5-0 out of 5 stars Chemistry for the Non-Scientist!!
I learned more teaching my child using Real Science-4-Kids than I did in my high school chemistry class. The text is bright and colorful, and the lessons are explained in an understandable manner, using correct terminology. The text is great as a reference tool, but be sure to buy the Teacher's Manual and Lab sheets from the publisher for maximum benefit if teaching children!!

3-0 out of 5 stars The Teacher Better Know Chemistry
We are using this text, along with the lab manual, this year with our first grader. This book does what it says. It introduces young children to the concepts they will need in high school and college. Personally, I like the concept of this because I have never understood why students aren't exposed to chemistry until high school. And, my daughter has learned to love chemistry this year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Help Book !
This is a truly remarkable book. It is as if the author is sitting right next to you and listening to your mind as you read page after page and as questions arise in your mind, the answers begin to unfold. The author anticipates them and answers them.
5-0 out of 5 stars love it! very helpful!
i'm taking an honors course for Chemistry and i'm only a freshman so that was extremely hard but with this book it really helped explain things and i loved his examples cuz even if you didn't get the scientific reasoning at first, you'll get it by his real-life examples. Also, i love his little tests after every mini-chapter and then a unit test. that was extremely helpful. all in all, the book was worth it and its probably a better book than Idiot's cuz it's actually in a format of how a teacher would teach you it so it's easy to understand and its more reliable cuz u know your teacher is going to teach it just like that since he's a teacher himself. get this book! you won't be disappointed! picture models are included to help understand topics as well as answers and explanations to answers for the tests! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Real Science for Kids CHEMISTRY Pre-Level I : "TERRIFIC"
Since the day we received this book, my 1st grader has not been able to put it down!
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to chemistry for this age!
I am a homeschooling mom with a science background. My daughter was asking many chemistry questions but I thought she would be too young to understand acids, bases, DNA, polymers, etc. at her age (6yo 2nd grader).I was wrong. The way things are presented in this book makes teaching tough concepts simple to this age group. My daughter especially enjoyed how atoms are displayed and used throughout the book. They are made to be almost like a cartoon character. They have the correct amount of arms depending on how many bonds they are capable of (hydrogen has one arm, carbon has four, and so on). They also have conversations such as saying hello or goodbye to other atoms during reactions. This was my daughters favorite unit for the year.By the time we had completed the book, she had a good understanding of the concepts and was able not only to present acids and bases at a science fair, but also field additional questions afterwards.Others who saw her work told her they did not understand what she was talking about until they were in high school. The reason I give this only 4 stars is because of the accompanying lab book and teachers manual (available through the publishers website). In order to get the most from this book, the labs really need to be performed as well. This book, although good on it's own, does not have the same impact as it does after the experiments. However, I found the teacher's manual was not quite up to the quality of this book (I was glad I had a science background).Despite this downfall, I would still highly recommend this book (and corresponding lab book / teacher's manual). ...
