2-0 out of 5 stars A Garden of Love
Seedfolks is a 69 page book, an easy read. Seedfolks is a book that shows that all different races, religions, cultures, and ages can come together to make something nice and beautiful and have meaning. They took a dump-like place and made it into something beautiful.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Book for Building Community
This small book (69 pages) contains thirteen vignettes, each written from the point of view of a different person. Although the people begin as strangers from various ethnic backgrounds, they become acquainted as each cultivates a part of a vacant lot. As the lot becomes a place of beauty, individual lives are transformed as well -- and a community is created.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good reading for children
This is a good book for children who does not understand the meaning of working together. Also, this book was structured very intelligently; so that any reader can follow the same story but from other people point of views. In addition; the way the author painted colorful pictures of the city was very unique. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Child needs to sit on a pumkin at least as big as they are!
I discovered and checked this book out for the first time a few weeks after I had taken my son to the pumkin farm, and after Thanksgiving had passed. We were delighted with the beautiful artwork (colored pencil drawings). The texture and dimension in the artwork is exquisite. The simple story line is perfect for the young child of 2-5.Jamie is met with a variety of curious animals while he pursues a journey of growing and harvesting his very own pumpkin, carving it, decorating his face for Halloween (you hardly notice this in the soft hues of the artwork, but his pet dog certainly does)and saving the seeds for the next season (six, to be exact). It would make a fine early reader as well for a k-2 reader.Nice book!

5-0 out of 5 stars All the children I've read this too loved it.!
I got this book many years ago, when I took care of a class of 4 year olds. They loved this book and read the book with me.Now that I have a child of my own (almost 2 years old) it is his favorite book.I read it sometimes 10 times a day and it has wonderful illustrations.I never tire of it and am looking to buy more of Jeanne Titherington's books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for teachers
I teach English to a fifth grade that had very little instruction in the past. I gave this book to three girls and they could understand the meaning of words using the picture clues. One of them had never heard the word pumpkin before, let alone sprout or seed. Now they all have a better vocabulary. Last year I read the same book to a first grade that did not have English classes. I used the story to teach plant growth and sequence concepts. The year before I had also used it to teach subtraction and backward counting - Jamie saved 6 seeds. He plants one. He still has 5, and so on. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful seasonal book!
We just bought this for our 2 year-old, and she absolutely loves it.The pictures are bold and colorful, reminiscent of Eric Carle-type pictures. This book tells the story of how pumpkins are grown, and how they eventually become Jack-o-lanterns.It is a wonderful book, especially for the price. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Everybody Book
This is one of those books that I call a real book--not for kids, not for adults, not for girls...just a good, well-written and illustrated book that is brilliantly designed to reach you where you are at.It did have the added bonus of making me cry on the last page, in a bittersweet sort of way.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful story and pictures!
This is a beautiful book that my 3 year old loves to be read over and over. The pictures are wonderful to look at, with such rich detail.I am moved by the story, and I cry at the end every time. One of thier best books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Grow for me
There are good David Small books and there are bad David Small books.Good David Small books are usually (though by no means always) written AND illustrated by David Small himself.Bad or poorly created David Small books are usually written by someone else, using Mr. Small's talents as a kind of afterthought. The exception to this rule (and all rules, as you well know, must have exceptions) is the pairing of David Small and his wife Sarah Stewart. After creating the fabulous "Money Tree" and the bibliophilic, but somewhat disturbing, "The Library", the two combined their talents yet again to write a gentle story of love, gardening, and family.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book About Teachers
A friend told me about this book and since then, I've given it to all my children's teachers. The illustrations are lovely - it is touching and sweet.

5-0 out of 5 stars No Plant Left Behind
Ms.Spitzer cultivates every manner of plant--the slow bloomer, the wild weed, the late sprouter--the way good teachers cultivate learners. Not with tests, not with homework, but with love and patience, care and certainty that effort will be rewarded. If youhave a child in kindergarten, please please please buy this book and give it to the teacher as a gift for some holiday--along with a packet of your favorite seeds and a picture of your child. If you buy the book for yourself and lend it to ANY teacher, you're not likely to get it back. It's that good. I wish every principal in every school would read this out loud at the first faculty meeting of the year, too!

More than 50 years ago, as a preschooler, I had a 78-rpm recording of THE CARROT SEED, distributed by a record club that was called (I think) Children's Record Guild.I can still sing the song and wish I could find a recording for the small fry in my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for new readers

Anholt's lovely book about Monet is my favorite of the series about famous artists. He demystifies impressionism and actually inspires children to paint their own "magical gardens"!!

Fine art apprecation was a lost thing among adults let alone children, encouraging an understanding of art at a young age will encorage intrest in art in children and their caregivers alike. Help kids enjoy art and culture while reading a fun story. With this book, (and the others in the series) they introduce kids to the famous artworks of great painters throughout history while encoraging a childs imagination to be creative and tell a story with each picture.

Editorial Review

After years of dreaming of planting a garden, Mr. McGreely finally takeshoe and watering can in hand and makes his dream come true. Unfortunately forhim (but luckily for readers), this is not the happily-ever-after part of thestory. Late one night, three hungry bunnies appear: "Tippy-tippy-tippy, Pat!Muncha! Muncha! Muncha!" The next morning finds our farmer gnashing his teethover the gnawed sprouts. So he builds a small wire fence. That night... "Muncha!Muncha! Muncha!" So Mr. McGreely builds a tall wooden wall. You get the idea.Young readers will hang on every word until they find out, once and for all, whowill win the battle of the broccoli.Read more

I borrowed this book from the public library for my 3 year old daughter and after I returned it, she kept asking for the "flower book." The illustrations are beautiful and the concept is really nice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Beautiful Lovely
We have a two-year-old daughter who picks this book out every day and every night to read. The illustrations are breathtaking. The story is simple but relevant; we follow every detail as the father and daughter walk the city street and ride the bus. We love to watch the daughter planting the flowers with her father; the mother coming home from school to see her birthday surprise. I have no doubt that this book will be with us for another generation or more (at least in our house). Thank you to the two wonderful artists who created such a special book.

Editorial Review

What do the children you know usually do when school is out for thesummer? Go crazy with boredom? Head poolside with friends? Plan a self-sufficient civilization with its own staple food crop? That is precisely how Wesley decides to spend his summer vacation. Wesley is not an ordinary boy: "He alone in his town disliked pizza and soda, alarming his mother and the school nurse. He found professional football stupid. He'd refused to shave half his head, the hairstyle worn by all the other boys, despite his father's bribe of five dollars." It all starts (the civilization, that is) when Wesley overturns a plot of ground in his yard to see what new and unknown seeds might blow into it. Curiously, just one kind of plant grows--an unusual, flowering, fruit-bearing plant that tastes of "peach, strawberry, pumpkin pie, and flavors he had no name for." Soon, Wesley is literally reaping the fruits of his labors--using the fruit rind to make a cup for the juice he squeezes, barbecuing the root tubers, and weaving the bark into a hat to keep off the sun. 4-0 out of 5 stars Weslandia
Creative, interesting, meaningful; these words all describe Paul Fleischman's fictional story Weslandia. As an outcast, Wesley has no friends is quite strange but when he decides grow a staple food crop and create his own civilization people start to think of him a little better. While everyone grows the usual beans, tomatoes, and Brussels sprouts in their garden he discovers the most unusual plant, later named a "Swist", bears a strange fruit and long stalks which can be used for many things including a mosquito repellent, a great snack, can be woven into clothes and used in a game. His civilization is so elaborate that he creates his own counting system, clock, and writing system. As the summer wore on, Wesley and his plants became the most popular things around. Everyone, even the people who were mean to him came to use his plants. As you could say, Wesley "lived off the land." Weslandia was a create story that children would love if they have and adventurous, creative side. The author has great ideas that are fun for children. It teaches many lessons, including the fact that you can be and individual and that you can depend on other things for fun instead of things found at the store.

4-0 out of 5 stars Weslandia
"Weslandia" is a thrilling book by Paul Fleischman. In this story, Fleischman does an extraordinary job describing the scenery and plot. The main character is a boy named Wesley, who is in his own world. As soon as you start this book, you are definitely in for an adventure. Nothing about Wesley is normal. He decides to do a summer project including growing his own staple food crop and finding his own civilization. As Wesley sleeps one night, the wind blows a seed into his backyard and grows a marvelous crop. The fruit from the plants had plenty of uses including bug repellent and jelly. He couldn't get back to his house so he sleeps in the middle of plants. Wesley can only tell time by the sundial he made out of his plants. He would soon sell his crop for a lot of money. Could this help Wesley fit in with the rest of the neighborhood? Read "Weslandia" to find out how this adventurous book ends. This is a good book for beginners to the age of ten.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wonderful World of Weslandia
This book is so inventive! The illustrations are particularly wonderful, rich and colorful with lots of action - not all of which is directly related to the main point of the picture but that is part of the appeal. For example, in a scene where Wesley leaps over a trashcan as he is being chased by bullies, a raccoon is shown inside the trashcan eating fish bones. My kids repeatedly studied each and every detail of every picture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent plant book!
This book is outstanding!Far from being for just the pre-school/younger elementary set, it has a wealth of information which even older kids can benefit from.In addition to the text based on the House That Jack Built, it has labeled drawings of garden tools, insects in the soil, seeds, clouds, parts of plants, plants, butterflies, birds, and other insects. We (my kids ages 4 thru 10 and I) had fun pointing out the things we know and learning the ones we didn't.The illustrations are excellent- colorful and detailed. This book is a wonderful addition to homeschool unit studies on plants.

I wish this book had been available for me when I was a young child. I'm delighted to be able to give it to my son, age 3. This book shows so many things to be found in a garden - from the first scene where Jack stands shovel in hand in an empty garden through the final page where Jack is surrounded by the beautiful outcome of his work to grow a beautiful garden. Along the way we learn the names of so many creatures and gardening items and see how a garden grows. Buy this book. It's a jewel. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enchanting children's book!
This book is utterly charming!I have to admit, I bought it for our toddler because I fell in love with the drawings and wanted to own a copy. The book tells the story of a little groundhog who learns all about growing his own food from his mentor, a squirrel. The story takes us through the whole year, and Ms. Cherry's illustrations of animals and plants are wonderful! We have a small vegetable garden every year, and I believe my son will know more of what goes on in the garden this year. The book will also appeal to an older child, as it gets into things like pollination, but my son loves this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A warm picturebook tale of animal friends
Lynne Cherry's How Groundhogs Garden Grew may require parental assistance but kids with some prior picturebook skills will relish this story of a little groundhog who loves to eat the vegetables in his neighbor's garden. The cycle of a gardening year is told within the structure of a warm picturebook tale of animal friends, and the drawings are especially engaging.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to get kids interested in gardening

5-0 out of 5 stars A big hit with my toddler
My 1 1/2 year old loves this book. She even calls it the Rainbow book.I bought it because I am really into gardening and she loves flowers. It is a great book to teach colors as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Colorful.
This book would be perfect for a child who enjoys helping their parent with a garden, or a child mastering their color knowledge. It briefly explains the process of how a garden is started from seed/bulb, shows the growth of different colorful flowers and name the most common garden flowers. The pictures are basic but bold and color fills the pages which allows you to appreciate the next step in the process and the next page in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
My children have loved this book. With the pictures of the plants there are names next to each one. My kids liked to point and say the names of all of the flowers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magical
Reading over previous reviews, I am glad there are others who feel the same way as I do about this book. I read it as a child but when I recently recalled it, I could not remember the title and searched in vain for some time for books on hedgehogs and gardens! I don't know how I finally found it but I'm so glad I did. I purchased a copy immediately. I too used to pore over the map of the garden and wished I was there. It's a lovely, timeless book with fantastic illustrations and a sweet story line.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank goodness this was reissued.
I remembered this book ever since my daughter used to get it out of the library. For years it was out of print, but luckily someone decided to put it back into publication.5-0 out of 5 stars I'm soo excited

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that touches the essence of fatherhood
In this book, where a young father shows his garden world to his daughter, one touches both the magical and the spiritual.Neither is mentioned, butboth are there in the rich prose and wonderful paintings. The children Iwatched hearing it were caught up in the magic and the wonder of thediscoveries. And they were quiet with my tears when I read of the dirtthat never quite ever washed off the young father's hands. I wasremembering my own father's hands that never quite ever lost that earthystain.Would that every father-to-be recieve a copy of this work thatexemplifies the ultimate essence of fatherhood - that "nothing in myfather's hands would ever hurt me." ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Even in death, there is life.
This book may not look like much. It is a slim cover, and admittedly a quick and easy read.Do not be fooled. This may be short, but most fairy tales are, and this managed to cram itself full of as much passion, emotion, and heart as you could ask.
3-0 out of 5 stars Green Angel - emotions for the outside
Have you ever done something to show your inside feelings on the outside? I know when I was a teenager and I was really mad at my family, I would go in my room, turn up my stereo really loud, turn on some annoyingly noisy songs and just sulk - hoping they felt my anger too.Sometimes when I'm feeling good I'll wear very bright colors or wear my hair in a silly way.Sometimes emotions are hard to express just with words.
5-0 out of 5 stars Green Angel
Imagine being left alone at home, all by yourself, after your whole family went out to the city, only to find that on the next day your family is dead in an accident. Meet a girl name who had experienced that; Her name is Green. Since the day that her whole family died in a huge city fire, her heart has became darkened. As the story goes on, Green turns into a girl who was the exact opposite of her; a cold saddened girl with rose tattoos all over her body, named Ash. She then realized by helping out a girl, her neighbor, her sister's dog, and seeing her sister in her dreams, that she has the courage to move on. Green Angel, by Alice Hoffman, tells Green's tale after that horrid day.

So creative - who does the garden belong to? who is the most important? Great story about everything that must be in place to create a garden.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect For Little Gardeners
This is a charming book that introduces a young child to the joys of gardening. When I read it to my nearly 3-year-old grandson he likes to complete the end of each rhyme. The illustrations are so accurate that the first time I showed him hollyhocks in my garden and asked him what they were, he could tell me their name!
5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely!
I could tell this would be a great book by the first page! The story is told in rhyme, which always makes it more fun to read to my 3 year old.I love the message of the book - that nature doesn't belong to anybody, and that every little creature has a purpose. It is one of the nicest children's books I've found. ...
