5-0 out of 5 stars Enchanting children's book!
This book is utterly charming!I have to admit, I bought it for our toddler because I fell in love with the drawings and wanted to own a copy. The book tells the story of a little groundhog who learns all about growing his own food from his mentor, a squirrel. The story takes us through the whole year, and Ms. Cherry's illustrations of animals and plants are wonderful! We have a small vegetable garden every year, and I believe my son will know more of what goes on in the garden this year. The book will also appeal to an older child, as it gets into things like pollination, but my son loves this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A warm picturebook tale of animal friends
Lynne Cherry's How Groundhogs Garden Grew may require parental assistance but kids with some prior picturebook skills will relish this story of a little groundhog who loves to eat the vegetables in his neighbor's garden. The cycle of a gardening year is told within the structure of a warm picturebook tale of animal friends, and the drawings are especially engaging.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to get kids interested in gardening
My three year old and I are planning a garden and this book has been an excellent companion to the process.Cherry does a great job of explaining how to create a garden through this story. In it Squirrel teaches Groundhog how to grow his own vegetables so he has things to eat.Cherry also includes a note to parents at the end that gives website information for more on gardening with children. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A big hit with my toddler
My 1 1/2 year old loves this book. She even calls it the Rainbow book.I bought it because I am really into gardening and she loves flowers. It is a great book to teach colors as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Colorful.
This book would be perfect for a child who enjoys helping their parent with a garden, or a child mastering their color knowledge. It briefly explains the process of how a garden is started from seed/bulb, shows the growth of different colorful flowers and name the most common garden flowers. The pictures are basic but bold and color fills the pages which allows you to appreciate the next step in the process and the next page in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
My children have loved this book. With the pictures of the plants there are names next to each one. My kids liked to point and say the names of all of the flowers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that touches the essence of fatherhood
In this book, where a young father shows his garden world to his daughter, one touches both the magical and the spiritual.Neither is mentioned, butboth are there in the rich prose and wonderful paintings. The children Iwatched hearing it were caught up in the magic and the wonder of thediscoveries. And they were quiet with my tears when I read of the dirtthat never quite ever washed off the young father's hands. I wasremembering my own father's hands that never quite ever lost that earthystain.Would that every father-to-be recieve a copy of this work thatexemplifies the ultimate essence of fatherhood - that "nothing in myfather's hands would ever hurt me." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Patch of Pleasure
I purchased The Pumpkin Patch a number of years ago and it is still one of my favorite fall books. The text is direct, going through the stages of pumpkin growth; from seed to harvest, for sale at the Pumpkin Patch, and carving into a jack o'lantern. The large, colorful photographs are a clear asset to the instructional value of the text. I now use this book every fall with primary (K through 3rd grade) students as we learn about pumpkins in the days before our own Pumpkin Patch field trip. It allows us to talk about sequencing (what happens first, next, etc.), how fruits grow from flowers, and the different varieties of pumpkins. The Pumpkin Patch is very educational for children (and adults!) old enough to understand the text and how the sequence of photographs relate to each other.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two Year Old Loves It
Who knew that our two year old would become so obsessed with this book, but after multiple library renewals we ended up having to buy it. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great photographs
My 3 1/2 year old son loves this book.It has some great pictures of the different stages of growth on a pumpkin plant. Also featured are pictures of different types of pumpkins and squash. The story is educational and informative, but simple enough for small children. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Even in death, there is life.
This book may not look like much. It is a slim cover, and admittedly a quick and easy read.Do not be fooled. This may be short, but most fairy tales are, and this managed to cram itself full of as much passion, emotion, and heart as you could ask.
3-0 out of 5 stars Green Angel - emotions for the outside
Have you ever done something to show your inside feelings on the outside? I know when I was a teenager and I was really mad at my family, I would go in my room, turn up my stereo really loud, turn on some annoyingly noisy songs and just sulk - hoping they felt my anger too.Sometimes when I'm feeling good I'll wear very bright colors or wear my hair in a silly way.Sometimes emotions are hard to express just with words.
5-0 out of 5 stars Green Angel
Imagine being left alone at home, all by yourself, after your whole family went out to the city, only to find that on the next day your family is dead in an accident. Meet a girl name who had experienced that; Her name is Green. Since the day that her whole family died in a huge city fire, her heart has became darkened. As the story goes on, Green turns into a girl who was the exact opposite of her; a cold saddened girl with rose tattoos all over her body, named Ash. She then realized by helping out a girl, her neighbor, her sister's dog, and seeing her sister in her dreams, that she has the courage to move on. Green Angel, by Alice Hoffman, tells Green's tale after that horrid day.

So creative - who does the garden belong to? who is the most important? Great story about everything that must be in place to create a garden.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect For Little Gardeners
This is a charming book that introduces a young child to the joys of gardening. When I read it to my nearly 3-year-old grandson he likes to complete the end of each rhyme. The illustrations are so accurate that the first time I showed him hollyhocks in my garden and asked him what they were, he could tell me their name!
5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely!
I could tell this would be a great book by the first page! The story is told in rhyme, which always makes it more fun to read to my 3 year old.I love the message of the book - that nature doesn't belong to anybody, and that every little creature has a purpose. It is one of the nicest children's books I've found. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Garden Crafts for Kids: 50 Reasons to Get your Hands Dirty
One of the most enjoyable books I have found to do garden crafts with my children. Each of the projects were fun and easy to do. I would recommend this book to young and Old.I hope the author is working on another book. Her illustrations were great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Garden Crafts for Kids
Not only is this a great resource for kids, but also for beginning gardeners like myself.I was getting buried by the information in other gardening books...complex soil testing, amending, feeding, etc. This book takes similar information and makes it understandable and makes the resultsseem achievable. The info given on easy-to-grow vegetables, easy-to-growflowers, and, especially, the chart for diagnosing and solving growingproblems are VERY helpful. I found this at the public library and MUST haveit at home!

4-0 out of 5 stars Seems to me you'd stop and see how beautiful they are
In 1975, folksong writer David Mallett wrote that infinitely catchy song "Inch By Inch".Children world-round have undoubtedly heard this product in one form or another.Whether it was John Denver on "The Muppet Show" (whee!) or in their preschools, "Inch By Inch" is, suffice it to say, well-known.Fast-forward to 1995 and David Mallett goes the next logical step.Whether he intended it or not, "Inch By Inch" is primarily sung to children. And when you've a catchy and popular children's song under your belt, why not make it into a picture book? Not all folksongs work as children's books (I've yet to see a well-done "Turn Turn Turn" or "Kumbiyah" though infinite books carry those songs) but "Inch By Inch" is that rare exception that when it works, WORKS!
5-0 out of 5 stars Great to Sing and Read
I reconnected with this song after hearing John Denver sing it on a recently released 'Muppet Show' DVD.It's a song that I have enjoyed sharing with my 2 year old daughter and the book brings the lyrics to life. The illustrations are beautiful and well reflect the lyrics. The book is a staple must-read for us throughout the day and is essential at bedtime (Mom, sing the garden song again!).Several children's cds have this recording by other artists, but my favorite by far is the John Denver.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sleepy bee blues
If you are at all familiar with that classic nursery rhyme, "The House That Jack Built", then you will find Arnold and Anita Lobel's beautiful, "The Rose In My Garden" to be a fine floral form of that already existing style.Using repetitive lines and pictures that, to my mind, are the finest Anita Lobel illustrations existing to date, the book is a perfect accompaniment to any leisurely summer storytime.
3-0 out of 5 stars Cumulative story
The story is cute, but it is told in the cumulative manner, as in "The House that Jack Built." I would not recommend it for any child who can read more than a few words--maybe ages 4-6, but definitely not 4-8. The artwork is nice, though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable book
I enjoyed reading this book to my children for several reasons. The pictures were nicely drawn and colorful. My five year old liked to watch a new insect appear on each page and I helped her identify each type of flower that was featured as the story of the bee sleeping in the Roseunfolded. The style of the story was repetitive and progressive, in a". . . the house that Jack built" way, which appeals to youngreaders. The rhymes were fun, and some lines had internal rhymes as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A gem of a book
This tiny little book is an absolute gem of simplicity, love and hope. A precociously aware, yet innocent little girl has been left with the owner of a struggling restuarant and his wife, to raise, by her mother, a woman on the fringes of show business, who cares for no one but herself. The child, Lovejoy, becomes obsessed with the idea of creating a garden in the ruins of a bombed out church, and enlists the aid of a local boy, Tip Malone. When they remove earth from a nearby enclosed garden, they are prosecuted by Miss Angela Chesney, an opinionated, domineering woman who can see no other path in life except her own, and who rules even her elder, more compassionate sister with the iron fist of mockery. It's a short story but one which made me laugh and cry because I could feel the sheer frustration, as well as the determination of Lovejoy as she battles the inexorable might of the adult world, a world which can not, or will not, see things from a child's perspective. I'm sorry that I've missed this beautiful book until now, but am grateful to have found it in an op-shop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rumer Godden at her Best!
This book along with "The Battle of Villa Forita," The Greengage Summer," "In this House of Brede.", and "China Court" are forgotten treasures.I wish everyone had a chance to experience these books.
5-0 out of 5 stars Another Rumer Godden book worth tracking down

And they are honest words, from the heart. She is a British treasure that most Americans do not know about.i can't say enough about her books. for children age nine or ten and older and adults. ...
