3-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant, But Not a Standout Addition to Our Bookshelf
MY GARDEN/MI JARDIN is a good book. Like other books in this very nice series of bilingual board books, it features Emberley's distinctive artwork. It is a very nice book to read through with a little one, pointing at objects and naming them, so that he can learn the words.

4-0 out of 5 stars A treasured favorite!
This beautifully-illustrated book with its simple narrative has quickly become a favorite in our house. My four-year-old nature-loving son is always fascinated by the story that recounts lily's discoveries and experiences in her garden and her wilderness surroundings. Each spread also contains interesting facts and histories of the different kinds of vegetation mentioned in the story, which is helpful in keeping adult readers engaged as well!

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun in the garden
It all starts with the delivery of a box of delicious oranges from Lily's Grandma in California. From there, we spend a year with Lily in her Maine home and watch as she and her garden grow and change month-by-month. The delightful journey also contains a narrative comparison between Lily's Maine garden and Grandma's California growing season (which never ends!). Lily's Garden is beautifully illustrated and has lovely asides providing anecdotal information on the things Lily is doing in and for her garden (a short history of oranges, how to make maple syrup, vegetables in Lily's Garden, Grandma's Blueberry Pancake recipe, etc.). The joys of the seasons and the excitement of gardening are nicely captured in this fun book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Waddell's best!
We bought this at a used book store a week ago, and have read it at least 50 times. If you have a very imaginative child, this is a great book. The illustrations are great, different from standard picture books. The main character, Mary, creates a darling "garden" project which she magically becomes a part of and plays in. She isn't quite sure how it is all happening, but she likes it. The unexplained magic is charming, thought provoking, and just plain fun. I love the idea that some of lifes surprises have no obvious explanation. If you have a child who seems to get lost in imaginary play, I am sure they will enjoy and relate to this book. This inspired us to create our own secret garden. Great project idea. We love our Martin Waddell books, and this is no exception. Can't say enough good about this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A nice story with unique illustrations.
My five year old son and I enjoy this book. It's a keeper! The illustrations are very different and we found them so interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Illistration
I purchased the book in order to do a presentation on it for my Children's Literature class. The illistrations are in fact what orinally caught my eye.I was doing stock at work and came across it and thought it was so colorful and interesting and thought, what child wouldn't be fascinated by this book.I eventually read the book and came to find that the story is great as well.I think it would encourage any child to use their imagination as well as to explore different artistic mediums other than crayons and construction paper. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars lovely, but...
I got a chance to see Mary Azarian's new alphabet book yesterday.I think her illustrations are heartwarming and lovely, and have enjoyed them for years in the Cook's Garden catalog and in books like The Plain Reader.I'malso a gardener and a former children's librarian ,and I enjoy seeinggardening depicted in children's books. However, I must say I was sadlydisapponted to see no people of color depicted in any of the illustrationsin this book.Surely Ms. Azarian must have met a nonwhite gardener at somepoint in her life; if not, that's sad, and she is welcome to come to myhouse and meet me before the next book. As a person of color I feltsaddened and left out as I looked through the pages; how would a smallchild (of any ethnicity) feel?Had it not been for this exclusion I wouldhave joyfully given this book five stars.

Mary Azarian was inspired by her own garden and has used the perfect form of illustration - woodcuts - to bring to life the alphabet of a garden.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful addition to any child's library!
When my son fell in love with all things blooming, I began my search for a book about flowers. I had been searching for a book that featured several different flower types and their names, as well as color illustrations. I was so pleased when I found Alison's Zinnia! Not only are there beautiful color paintings of the different blooms, there is also a narrative that teaches the ABC's. A few of the flower types are difficult to pronounce (even for the adults out there!), and how many girls do we really know named Xantippa? Also, I was a little disappointed that all the names featured in the book were little girls. I would have liked to see some boys thrown in the mix. Especially since I bought his book for my son. But I still think that the book is a priceless addition to our family library.

5-0 out of 5 stars enchanting
My 4 year old daughter and I found this book light-hearted and enchanting. The illustrations are beautiful. The book flows smoothly from start to finish making it a very pleasurable read for both parent and child.Mydaughter brings this book to me on a daily basis and we have read it overand over again.Delightful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Flowers A to Z
Anita Lobel's Alison's Zinnia is a unique alphabet book using a circular tale to lead the reader from A to Z. Each page has one line which begins with a girl's name and a flower for that particular letter and ends with agirl's name for the next letter, "Heather hosed a Hyacinth forIrene".The split page illustrations show a largedetailed paintingof the flower on top and the story line with the alphabet letter below thetext.I believe children will enjoy the challenge of the unusual names andthe flowers portrayed in the picture book.In the classroom it would be agreat children's literature rewrite. The students could use, for example, boys names and vegetables to create their own classroom version.Anotherexample of her beautiful art work and her ability to capture the details ofa flower are in The Rose in my Garden by Arnold and Anita Lobel. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A lovely piece which teaches kids about community
How is a community garden different from a personal backyard garden? Our Community Garden is a first-person lyrical story which brings together the goals and experiences of one Audrey Aubergine and her friends, who tend their community garden and play together there. Add folk art colorful illustrations and warm drawings and you have a lovely piece which teaches kids about community garden fellowship as they read the story of working together.

When I first heard that the Worm Queen in Kalamazoo (Mary Appelhof) had published a kids' book on vermicomposting, my reaction was cautious.Last year someone sent me one that was just too cute--and inaccurately showed red wigglers with eyes!5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow, step-by-step instructions for young people
Written and illustrated by Michelle Eva Portman, Compost By Gosh! is a simple, rhyming children's book about the joy of making compost - the process of letting worms eat leftover food and turn into that material into something which is perfect for fertilizing plants. Easy to follow, step-by-step instructions for young people who want to make their own compost (under adult supervision) round out this excellent and very highly recommended instructional book for budding young gardeners.
