5-0 out of 5 stars The Ugly Vegetables
One of my two year olds favorite books. Beautiful illustrations and a fun story, especially if coming from a gardening background. My daughter also loves trying to say the Chinese words for the vegetables at the end of the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
I bought this book for my 3 year old, but I think it's a bit too complicated for her.The story is lovely, and I bought this based on our enjoyment together of several other books illustrated and/or written by Ms. Lin.However, her attention span at 3 is too short to get through all of the narrative, so we just looked at the pictures while I summarized. The pictures, as usual, were colorful and intriguing, but we put this book aside for next Summer, when she'll be closer to 4, and we can read it together as we plan our own "ugly" vegetable garden.

5-0 out of 5 stars An awesome book and receipe included, how great is that!
Each Grace Lin book I get, I am just so impressed by her talent! Every child loves to get their hands into dirt and growing flowers or vegetables is always fun and gives the child great pride to show everyone their hard work and or beautiful flowers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for preschoolers
The Surprise Garden is a great book for showing young children how a seed becomes a plant. The book engages children by having them guess what fruit or vegetable the plants will become. The illustrations are bright and colorful and are peppered with animals and insects that my kids loved to find. The last page shows what each fruit or vegetable seed looks like and it's fun for kids to try to guess each one. This is a simple educational book that young children will love.

3-0 out of 5 stars Vibrant Colors
The virbant colors and bold pictures make this book a real eye catcher! Preschoolers will enjoy learning how a handful of seed will sprout, grow into plants and produce vegetables you can eat! Great book to read and keep on your shelf during spring planting season. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
As a teacher, I have always loved this book. The bold colors hold children's attention, and it fits well with lessons for younger children on what seeds/plants need to grow, the growing process and includes a recipe for making your own vegetable soup. For early childhood teachers,it can become an early science/social studies/math lesson and also a parent/child activity. A must have!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good lesson for little children
As well as being attractive and quite an easy read (my five year old managed it), it encourages children to be interested in vegetables-both growing and eating them. Great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book for Small Children - a review of Growing Veg. Soup
This book has gotten good reviews by others but I am a little less enthusiastic about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!!!!!!!!!
I love this book with all my heart. It always makes me smile and laff.It is like magic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful story of a young girl and gardening delights.
Mrs. Bean's daughter grows to be tall and strong like the vegetables in her garden, and her efforts in her garden produce wonders which become afamily affair in this story of gardening delights and a small girl'sspecial talents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Girl Grows Magic
Good folksy fairy tale where the protagonist is a girl not scared to get her magical green fingers dirty. My two year old immediately loved the story of a young baby growing into a little girl and "doing somethingwonderful."I like that there are lots of opportunities to identifyand name vegetables in the exciting if not overly refined illustrations. Also, I really recommend this book for its sense of community -- when thevillage comes together to harvest and eat Scarlette's giant vegetables,it's great to notice that women drive forklifts, priests sit down to eatwith tattooed bikers and neighbors come in all shapes and colors.Thesedetails are not at issue in the content of the story, but added fordiscovery in the ilustrations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars watch a sunflower grow
Very colorful, and wonderfully written. This book is about a little boy Max and his pig.As you turn each page it takes you through all of the steps in growing a plant from the seed to the final flower.Whats better is that each page has some type of activity like moving tabs, pop up pictures or lift the flap.Overall with few lines to a page it is a wonderful story for all youngsters, and its scientific!

5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable pop-up book!
Our Children's Librarian used this book for my daughter's ToddlerTime class the day that we planted sunflower seeds, and all the children LOVED "Max Loves Sunflowers."The bright colors, simple line-drawings and movement on every page captured the interest of all the two-year-olds in the class.I highly recommend this book for youngsters; kids can watch the sunflower "grow" from seed to seedling to a huge plant.Very entertaining, colorful, and fun! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Gentle tale of redemption
This gentle tale of redemption is appropriate for the six and older child or either gender. In the story, the protagonist (a ten year old boy) redeems an act of mindless vandalism (the destruction of an old man's vegetable garden) by assisting the victim in planting a new garden. This act of redemption develops into a friendship with a lasting and positive affect on the protagonist's life.
4-0 out of 5 stars The summer my father was ten
This book was one of the greatest childrens books od all time. Ihave never really been a fan of childrens books but this one seems to catch a persons sye. Ilove in how it's a book full of emotions. That just makes the story. The story also takes place over a long period of time. It also shows on the mistakes of life when your young and don't know as much as you do when you get older. This book was full of great meaning and had a great story line.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Beautiful" will restore your sense of joy and hope.
Susie Gregg Fowler and her husband, Jim Fowler, create sanctuaries ofcompassion and beauty in their books. This is a story of a child whoselove for his uncle is honored so honestly by his family that even in theuncle's illness and death there is room for joy, for beauty, for hope, forcelebration of all that endures in the human soul. The story and picturesnever fall off into sentimentality or glibness; every beautifullychosenword of the story, every illustration of the family and of the garden, carries one gently into the story of a family coming to terms with love andloss and the real work that must be done for a family to stay whole. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent story for young children learning to read
When she was young, my daughter loved all stories about Winnie the Pooh and I know she would have loved this one. Pooh plants a pumpkin seed in early spring and wants to grow a great pumpkin. He goes to the cupboard and gets a large number of honey jars and takes them to the garden. All summer long he sits eating honey and watching the pumpkin vine grow. The story goes through all the stages of the growth of the pumpkin, from early sprout, to the blossom, to the green bulb and finally to the large orange pumpkin. Since he has consumed so much honey, Pooh's belly has taken on a shape similar to that of the pumpkin. When the pumpkin is finally ripe, Pooh and his friends carve it into the best jack-o'-lantern in the Hundred-Acre-Wood.

Pooh's Pumpkin is a Winnie the Pooh First Reader book that I received through a refund offer with two cereal boxes.
