In her first book, Fargo artist, Ellen Jean Diederich, creates a beautiful and stunning setting for the cat, Art, to search for his playmet, Petunia. 5-0 out of 5 stars cant wait to grow some turnip greens
Grow it Again is well produced and informative. The text is very inspiring and will convince children to sprout an avocado tree or plant a pineapple top. Each page is well laid out and colorful. The author carefully explains directions for the step-by-step projects in language appropriate for children in the third grade and up.The illustrations compliment the text well and add color to every page. The book also contains children's jokes about plants that serves to break up the text and lighten the mood. ... Editorial Review

One winter morning a seed lies on the ground. "What's this?" wonders a little girl passing by. Together with an equally curious bird and a wise ginger-colored cat, she plants the seed and begins the wondrous process of growing a flower. What will it be? Every day she waters the patch of soil, and watches over the tender sprout when it emerges. And one summer day, when she runs outside, there is a giant sunflower, beaming up at the sun! The little girl continues to nurture her flower, visiting it, telling all her secrets. And when the fall day comes that the sunflower's head droops, the little girl carefully carries it to school and gives it to her teacher, who helps the class begin the cycle anew. Next summer, every child in the class has a magnificent sunflower! Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A "Teaching" book that is fun to read!
We checked this out of the library for my almost-5-year old daughter, and she has really enjoyed it.On each page, we'd read a brief and poetic description of what season it was and what the plant and its flowers looked like, and how the flowers were pollinated. Then, half of the page would fold out to reveal the fruit or vegetable (or legume, in the case of peanuts)that would grow on the plant. It was a fun guessing game at first, then a fun remembering game on subsequent reads. The illustrations are wonderful, showing the plant in various stages of fruit development. There are detailed illustrations showing the initial transformation from flower to fruit. My daughter just found this fascinating! The book teaches quite a bit, but doesn't sound at all dry to read. And it doesn't get into too much detail about the parts of the plant/flower.There is a small section in the back with a bit more detailed description...but rather than simply reading that, I took some of the information from it and would just mention it during the story:"look, see those? That's called the stamen of the flower," or "see the yellow on the bee's legs? That's the pollen he got from this flower, and he's taking it over to that flower."

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Welcome to Spring
I just got this from the library and read it to my 2- and 3-year-old kids. They loved it, and so do I.The photos are fabulous and make we want to jump out into the garden right away, despite the 6 inches of snow on the ground right now.My kids were fascinated by the girl, Tilda, shoveling her own garden bed and planting her seeds bought with her own pocket money. They are now determined to grow some sunflowers on their own.As soon as we finished the book, they both said "Read it again!"And that's really the highest praise. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book - I Know the Author
I read this book when I was a junior at Cornell College, no relation to the Univ, and Jackie Martin was the Prof. At first I did not like the set up of the book at first, yet when I thought about the wide range of readers this book apeals to I enjoyed it more. The side bars are interesting and would be use full in some cases to the adult -- i.e. teacher, or parent -- yet older children who find this book interesting will want to know more and find them most usefull. Also the basic story line will be interesting to younger children and I have used read it seveal times to the first grade children I tutor in Ohio. It is well written and is a perfect book to read when spring come around or for a group project dealing with spring.

5-0 out of 5 stars A parable of compassion vs. misery
This tiny tome is in actuality a parable of compassion vs. misery, a story of triumph of life and vitality over common desperation. It is an example of how good work that encompasses the light of the sun and the miracle ofthe seed supersedes the doldrums of disenfranchised lives. The recipientsof the gardens thumb their noses at their personal misfortune and rise tofind that beauty and joy are possible. The garden givers have brought themthat possibility. It is a sound Emersonian lesson for children. And fun toread. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A simple and charming full-color picturebook
Flora's Surprise! is a simple and charming full-color picturebook written and illustrated by Debi Gliori. Flora the rabbit and her family are all busy planting different things - but while the other rabbits plant seeds, Flora plants a brick and waits and waits for it to grow into a house. A twist ending complements this upbeat and confidently recommended picturebook story.

5-0 out of 5 stars To thine own self be true
This engaging picture book for preschool-grade K is one of Gliori's best. Flora rabbit and her older siblings go to work in the garden. While the siblings plant seeds for flowers and vegetables, Flora plants a brick in a flowerpot which she claims will blossom into a house, despite warnings to the contrary. When spring comes, the garden is all in bloom, and it turns out that Flora was right too - her flowerpot has a bird in a nest living on it! Kids will enjoy the gentle humor of this tale, and will identify with Flora having to stick up for herself when her elders dismiss her ideas. The garden pictures are warm and colorful too. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A garden blooms among the pages of this pop-up book
This charming book is based upon the true story of two 80-ish twins living in the historic "Gimghoul" neighborhood in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. For 50+ years, the twin sisters have tended their garden. Each Spring, when the garden is ready for guests, the sisters hanga small wooden sign which states "the garden is open" on their gate. Hundreds of visitors stroll their garden paths, ask for advice, and sometimes return home with a cutting or a handful of seeds. Author Pamela Pease has done a fine job in sharing this wonderful story in this beautifully executed pop-up. Her illustrations are childlike and bold; a pop-up of the sisters' house and garden "blooms" amidst the pages, and a packet of seeds from the garden is tucked into the back. For gardeners (and children) of all ages!
